PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Hello Everyone,

What’s with this weather, rain and cold – but the beat goes on. Bee packages arrived and had to be installed regardless of the weather. I count myself lucky as the day I picked up my packages the temperature was in the upper 60’s, but windy and sunny. On my way home, I went through some spotty showers, but that was it. The installs went smoothly despite the wind. I assisted a couple of new beekeepers with the installation of their first hive. The look of awe and amazement on their faces is always a delight to see. I’ve checked my hives, the queens are out of the cages and the workers are starting to make comb. What a good sign!

Remember, this is the time to be vigilant with a new hive. They can grow so fast that they can swarm before you know it. With this cold snap and rain, I’ve found that I need to keep feeding my established hives longer than I thought, because the flowers and trees are not blooming as fast or as early as last year. I’ve got larvae in the hives and the nurse bees are doing their best to keep everyone fed and warm. Remember to reverse your deeps and keep feeding as they need the help.

It’s raining again as I sit here writing this article. But what else is new? I’m looking forward to the coming weeks, the Field Day and the Northeast Ohio Honeybee Conference with their agendas of speakers and activities. I look forward to seeing you there!

Bee healthy and happy!Dennis

1. Give three reasons why a beekeeper would consider requeening a colony._______________, ______________, ____________

2. Please explain why adding honey supers on top of a colony does not prevent swarming. ______________________________________________________

3. (True or False) Young bees accept a queen more readily than older bees.Answers:1. Reasons for requeening colonies are:

A. reduce the swarming tendencyB. increase the chances of winter survivalC. control of some bee diseases, i.e. sacbrood, European foulbrood, chalkbroodD. production of larger forager populations to increase honey yieldsE. improve colony temperament

2. Adding honey supers on top of a colony does not prevent swarming since it does not relieve congestion in the broodnest, the primary cause of swarming.

3. True As worker bees age, they become increasingly intolerant of queens not their own. Young worker bees usually do not pose a threat.

GUARD BEES and the reason why GCBA is so importantOn April 30th, Jim Kazak, resident of Parma, sent an email to several GCBA’s Trustees asking for support. Parma Councilman Napoli received a complaint from one of his residents of a beekeeper in his ward. It was reported, as indicated in the Sun Post April 28, 2011 that Councilman Napoli was to recommend restrictions on beekeeping to larger lot sizes. An email news blast went out to the GCBA membership. Twelve beekeepers descended upon council with only some of them being residents of the city. OSU extension representative Sandy Block and her colleague were present as well. The Guard Bees had made their presence known now that the alarm pheromone had been sent! Council President, Sean Brennan spoke to the group before the meeting and appreciated our presence admitting he had a lot to learn about Honeybees and was open to being taught more. Councilman Brian Day who also sits on Councilman Napoli’s Environmental Standard Committee told the group that he was not completely informed on the nature of the complaint and what observations Councilman Napoli had witnessed. Councilwoman Deborah Lime spoke to council saying in all the years she has been active, not once has she received a complaint about a beekeeper. Councilwoman Mary Galinas concurred as she had never received a complaint about beekeepers. Councilwoman Lime also suggested the problem may lie in the beekeeper and should be handled by the beekeepers themselves to monitor teach and educate good beekeeping practices. All the Guard Bees heads nodded! Councilwoman Galinas addressed the Guard Bees and informed us that there is no proposal drawn for restricting beekeeping within the city and that if Councilman Napoli had any inclination to introduce such a legislation all will be informed but as it stood now, no such document has been proposed. Jim Kazak , Karin Wisher and Kristopher Gaughan along with several residents of Parma spoke requesting they loosen their current restrictions to include smaller lots. Sandy Block from the OSU Extension offered assistance in educating the council about Honeybees and additional assistance for developing legislation to protect them. After the meeting it was privately shared with the Guard Bees that the problem could have been that the beekeeper had no water source for the bees and that they didn’t control their flight pattern as it was intrusive on their neighbors. We were not privy to the name of the beekeeper so we can not contact them to educate and teach good, considerate hive management principles. This would be a perfect role for our County Inspector. We will be following this situation closely. As all beekeepers know, when the guards bees are called to action the second time twice as many bees appear! Bee prepared to take action if called upon - follow this situation on FACEBOOK:www.facebook.com/clevelanbeekeepers! Feel free to add your own photos, videos and comments onour Facebook page!also on Twitter: clevebeekeepers as well!
