BBC Thriller Of The Season:N. Central Storms Back To Defeat Hilltop

WEST UNITY: January 31, 2014 Ifany fans left at the half thinking this con-

test was out of hand, they missed one of

the biggest come from behind victories re-corded this year in BBC action, with the

Eagles storming back to grab a thrilling55-53 victory.

For the Hilltop Cadets in the rst half, all cylinders were clicking and teammates

Quinn Smith and Miklo Abner were drop-

ping in threes, building what seemed tobe an insurmountable lead going into the

locker room at the half up by 19, 35-16.The dynamic Cadet teammates combined

for 8 three pointers early in the game. Butafter the intermission, North Central hit

the court determined to close the gap, and

in dramatic fashion, they did!Chase Legacy was the fuel in the Eagles

engine that shut down the high powered

Cadet attack, dominating both ends of thecourt and recording a game high 16 points

on the night, while teammates DylanHutchinson and Branden Turner turned

up the heat with 10 each in the game. Butthe hero of the night for the visiting North

Central Eagles was 5 10 Junior Josh

Sawyer. Trailing by 2, 51-53 with 13 ticksremaining on the game clock in the face of

a ferocious Cadet defensive effort, Sawyerfound an small opening in Hilltops pres-

sure front and took the pass, slightly in-

side the three ring; taking a calm step back

into three range, and nailing the go ahead

shot. Following Sawyers 3, the Cadets

took the ball down court but a costly turn-

over put the ball back in the Eagles hands

with 8 remaining. The Eagles Hutchison

then was fouled on the inbound pass, and

he hit 1 of 2 to bring the nal to 55-53.

For North Central on the night, Legacys

16 led the way, while Turner and Hutchi-

sons 10 were clutch for the comeback.

Sawyer had 7 in the game, going 1 for 1

from the three range, while Clayton Fergu-

son added 7 as well. Also on the board for

North Central, Jordan Reeves had 3 and

    Ethan Douglas chipped in 2.

For Hilltop, Quinn Smith led the waywith 15, knocking down 3 from outside

the line while Abner joined Smith in dou-

ble gures with 13, also hitting on 3 from

outside the line. Tim Maneval also was in

double gures with 13; Jalen Towers hit

for 4 while Kelby Grime and Ryan Brooker

Fayette Eagles Avenge An Earlier BBCSetback By Turning Away Stryker, 44-29

    By Timothy Kays

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

FAYETTE: January 31, 2014 - Backin December, the Fayette Eagles learned

a painful lesson in The Cage at Stryker...contain the twin towers, Parker Ruffer and

Tanner Clingaman, or lose. On that night,

Ruffer and Clingaman each hit for doubledigits to plant a 46-38 loss on the Eagles.

Since that time, Ruffer has been on atear, and Clingaman has provided interior

support to put the Panther Pack into thethick of the BBC hunt with a 4-1 confer-ence mark. On January 31, the Eagles

welcomed Stryker into their house with ahint of BBC revenge in the air. The plan to

contain the twin towers worked to a tee asTyler Cox, Koby Biddix, Wade Burkholder

and Tristen Bates held the Panther power

pair to a combined 16 points, giving theEagles the ability to attain and maintain a

cruising altitude that the Panthers simplycould not overcome in a 44-29 loss...their

lowest offensive output of the campaign todate.

Dean Beamont canned a rst period

trey and Clingaman added a deuce, butthe snarling Fayette defense limited Ruffer

to a pair of f ree throws. Meanwhile, Biddix

splashed two of his three treys in the open-

ing stanza, and combined with a bucketfrom Cox and pair of eld goals each from

Chandler Sanford and Jerad Seiler, theEagles jumped out to an early lead that

would not be threatened the remainder ofthe game. So tough was the speed of the

Eagles' defense, that Ruffer would not hit

his rst eld goal until the third period. Hegot off plenty of shots, but every one was

well defended by at least one Purple and

Gold shadow.Biddix led all scorers with 11 points for

the 7-5 / 3-2 Eagles, with Seiler nishing

with 10 points and Sanford 9. Cox added 4

points, Burkholder and Bates had 3 pointsapiece, and Grant Schaffner and Skylar

Lantz each had 2 points.Ruffer was held far below his average

at 10 points, and Clingaman and Beamonteach nished with 6 for the 5-9 / 3-2 Pan-

thers. Brandon Woolace and Austin Grisi-

er closed out the Stryker scoring with 3points apiece.

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    WAUSEON - 1-31-14 - For the second

time in two weeks the Wauseon Indiansand Delta Panthers went head to head.

This time around, however, it counted in

NWOAL play and Wauseon secured thewin 78-63.

The Wauseon win logjams NWOALstandings with Archbold, Delta and

Wauseon all at 4-1. The Indians improvedto 11-4 overall and Delta falls to 10-3.

Over the rst 4:30 of the opening quar-

ter the Panthers were a team on a missiontaking a quick 9-2 lead. Delta led as much

as 13-5 as was reminiscent of the rstgame the two teams played last week when

the Panthers had a 20-5 lead at the end ofthe rst quarter.

This time around the rst quarter ended

17-13 in the Panthers favor as Kris Boyselscored two baskets to narrow Delta's lead.

Justin Callahan opened the secondquarter with a three-point goal as the

Panthers were quickly back up by seven. The next two offensive possessions for

Wauseon, Noah Castle, who only scored

three points on the night, had two greatassist passes to Jacob Newlove and that

brought the Indians back to within 20-17. After a Scott Garlinger miss, Boysel

grabbed the rebound and was a man pos-sessed as he nailed a three-pointer to tie

the game for the rst time 20-20 at the

5:59 mark. The teams traded baskets to keep the

game in a deadlock. The game was tied fora third time when Corry Byers got an as-

sist from Boysel. Delta took a short lead ona Bailey Monroe bucket, but again it was

Boysel who answered that with his second

three-point shot putting the Indians back

up 30-29. Castle fouled Garlinger, but the

senior missed his rst of a one and one

foul shots. Newlove was able to score for

the Indians with the Panthers answering

back at the rst half buzzer with a shot

by Andrew Stickley as the Indians held a

close 32-31 advantage at the half.

Delta came out charged up in the third

quarter and connected for ve straight

points to go on top 36-32. A three-point

goal by Monroe was immediately answeredby Byers as it was again a one-point differ-

ence. The game remained a two point gap

up to 44-42 in favor of the Indians. This

was the point of the game that the Indians

took the momentum and never took their

foot off the gas the rest of the way. A three

by Byers, followed by another three by Alec

Lillich put the Tribe up for good at 50-42.

They continued the assault with a bucket

by Byers off a feed from Boysel to go up 10

points as the third quarter came to an end.

During the third quarter Garlinger was

charged with technical foul as he steam-

rolled into a set Noah Castle. He handled

the call by showing much emotion and was

given the foul by the ofcial. That seemed

to be a turning point along with the back-

to-back threes by Wauseon that took Delta

completely away from their game the restof the night.

The fourth quarter belonged to the In-

dians who scored 26 points over the last

eight minutes to Delta's 21 points. But the

night belonged to the trio of Kris Boysel (27

points), Corry Byers (23 points), and Jacob

    Newlove (20 points).

The Indians take their show on the road

Friday when they travel to Patrick Henry

for a tilt with the 2-11 Patriots.

DELTA - 1-30-14 - There was a real rum-ble in the Jungle at Delta Thursday night

and when the dirt settled the Wauseon In-

dians won a big NWOAL contest against thePanthers 56-55.

Delta (11-6 and 5-2) came into the con-test with the league's second leading score

in Brigan Wymer along with Morgan Mat-

timore the fth leading scorer in the league.Meanwhile, Wauseon's Natalie Koenig

was right behind Mattimore in scoring, sothe game was set to be a high scoring game

from the beginning. The two teams did notdisappoint.

Anna Marshall gave Wauseon it's initial

lead of 2-0 with nearly two minutes gone inthe rst quarter as both teams were settling

into play. Brailee Green tied the game upwith a shot for the Panthers. Wauseon's

next trip down the court ended on a twopoint shot by Sally Frank. Maddie Richer

came up with a steal and the Tribe was up

6-2. Wymer got her scoring night start-ed making one of two foul shots, Frank

grabbed the rebound off the second shot'smiss as the Indians continued to lead 6-3.

Mattimore showed her aggressive style ofplay with a strong drive to the basket to close

the gap to a one point margin. After a Nata-

lie Koenig miss and Hannah Blaylock foul,

Wymer converted for the Panthers. Her shotwas matched by a Richer shot for Wauseonand the Indians continued to clink to a one-point lead 8-7 with 2:19 remaining in theopening stanza. Another Wymer make putthe Panthers back up in the opening quar-ter's seesaw battle . Koenig connected fora three-point goal to put the Tribe up 11-9.But a conventional three-point play by Wy-mer gave the advantage back once again tothe Panthers. The quarter ended with a Sa-riah Yackee desperation shot that fell shortand the Panthers were up 12-11.

The Indians found the net on their rsttwo possessions to start the second quar-ter. Koenig scored on a put-back from a LexiLane miss and Blaylock connected on oneof two foul shots as the Tribe went back ontop 14-12. But it did not take Mattimorelong to tie the game back up at the 6:05mark. Yackee responded to the tied gamewith a three-pointer, then it was Frank andher newfound offensive game with a 12 footjumper that gave the Indians a ve point ad-vantage at 19-14. But the ever present Wy-mer closed the gap to 19-17 with her secondconventional three point play. It was Frankagain that answered Wymer with a bucket. Then it was Wymer's turn to answer with abasket and it was still a two-point Wauseonadvantage 21-19. The game was tied afterWauseon committed their rst turnoverand Delta's Abbie Harris took advantage to

deadlock the game again 21-21 with 3:18remaining in the rst half. Another timelythree-pointer from Koenig and a bucketfrom freshman Kylie Archibeque gave theIndians their biggest lead at 27-21. TheIndians responded on another Panthers'error as Koenig scored to expand the Indi-ans run to 8-0. Then she followed that shotup with two made free throws as Wauseoncracked open a 10 point lead before Deltanally scored again on a bucket from Greento make it 31-23 with 1:04 left. The halfended after a Wymer made free throw as theIndians went into the locker room with a 31-24 lead.

The teams exchanged baskets to startthe second half. After two Koenig makesfrom the foul line, Wymer responded witha bucket. Bri Raab sank a nice three-pointshot next for the Panthers. But as was hap-

pening most of the evening, the Indians re-sponded with a three-pointer from Richer tomaintain a seven point advantage at 36-29.After a Delta turnover it was Sally Frankagain on a dish from Richer giving Wauseona 38-29 lead. Haley Shindorf made two foulshots after a foul by Yackee. A Mattimoremiss was boarded by Frank. Koenig com-pleted one of her patented drives that re-sulted in a foul on Ravyn Mitchell. Koenig

    Lady Blackbirds Take Down Bombers

    By Mitch Peebles

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    EDON 1/30/2014The Pettisville Lady

Blackbirds jumped out to an early leadagainst the Edon Lady Bombers and would

not look back, as the Blackbirds would goon to win 51-32.

In the rst quarter of the contest, bothPettisvilles offense and defense set the

tone early, holding the Bombers to only

six points, while scoring 16 of their own,

and jumping out to a ten point rst quarterlead. The second quarter would be much of

the same, as only Gearhart would be ableto hit a basket from the eld for the Edon,

scoring seven of their nine second quarter

points. Meanwhile, Pettisville would score14 points in the second period, expanding

their lead to 15, as they lead 30-15 at half-time.

The third quarter was a very balancedone, with Pettsville scoring 13 points, and

Edon putting up 11. At the end of three

quarters, the Lady Blackbirds held a 43-

26 lead. Both offenses would struggle to score

points in the fourth and nal quarter of thecontest. Pettisville would again outscore

Edon in the quarter, this time by a margin

of 8-6, giving the Blackbirds the 51-32 vic-tory.

Lady Cadets Cruise To Victory Over North CentralNORTH CENTRAL 1/30/2014In a

Buckeye Border Conference matchup, theHilltop Lady Cadets defeated the Lady Ea-

gles of North Central by a score of 58-32.

Hilltop was able to get an edge overNorth Central early on in the contest, as

the Cadets jumped out to a 10-7 lead atthe end of the rst quarter, but the Eagles

were able to keep within striking distance, not letting Hilltop pull away quite yet.

The Cadet lead would expand in the sec-

ond quarter, with Hilltop outscoring NorthCentral 11-6 in the period. As the halftime

buzzer sounded, Hilltop controlled a 21-13lead.

The third quarter is when almost all

doubt would be eliminated. Even thoughHilltop only shot 32 percent from the eld

in the contest, the Cadets would controlthe glass, out-rebounding North Central

by a huge 37-19 margin. The extra pos-sessions that the Cadets were able to bring

down would help them to go on to outscore

North Central 19-4 in the third quarter,

and move to a 40-17 lead at the end of the

third quarter of action.Although the Eagles offense would be

able to score 15 points in the fourth and

nal quarter, the Cadet lead would growonce again, with Hilltop putting up 18

more points on the scoreboard, sealing a58-32 win.

For North Central, Litzenberg lead theway with eight points, Ryan was next with

    seven, Hayes contributed six, Oxender

and the Tribe continued maintaining the

nine-point advantage. Richer had twomore baskets and Delta made three foul

shots before the offensively charged third

quarter came to a close with the Indiansup 45-39.

The fourth quarter started out with eachteam committing a turnover. The Panthers

began going on the attack. A Alexa Lauchmake and a Wymer put-back closed the

game to a 45-43 Wauseon lead. Koenig an-

swered the call with another three point-er, but Wymer charged right back with a

basket. Yackee was fouled by Mattimore.Sariah calmly sank both shots as the In-

dians kept their ve point lead with 3:27left in the game. After Koenig missed two

foul shots, Wymer connected on two after a

foul by Yackee. Wauseon then committed aturnover and Delta tied the game up at 50-

50 with a shot from, you guessed it, Wy-mer. Richer was then fouled by Wymer as

she connected on both free throws at the1:43 mark to give Wauseon the lead again

at 52-50. The Panthers' never say die at-

titude was displayed as they tore off thenext four points of the game. Wymer made

one of two free throws and Raab sank an-

other rainbow three to put the Panthers

up 54-52 with 56.9 seconds left. Koenig

came through with her third three pointshot to put the Indians back up 55-54 with

    11. 8 second left. After a double time out

by Wauseon, the Panthers had one lastchance under their own basket to claim

the victory, but outstanding defense bythe Tribe down the stretch allowed them

to sneak away from the jungle with the winthey needed.

"I thought that this was a good team

win for us. It's always tough to play at Del-ta and they have a number of weapons,"

Wauseon coach Ashley Oyer said. "BriganWymer is a great player and she's tough to

stop. Every single kid stepped up and didsomething positive for us last night to help

us get the win. We had four different peo-

ple guarding Wymer throughout the game.We had different kids step up and hit key

shots and different points throughout thegame. They played a match-up zone, so we

thought that we could use a post presence. When they helped on the drive, the back

side was open and Sally Frank did a great

job of being in the right place at the righttime. She also had 12 rebounds for us."

Coach Mike Ritter said, Going in, I

felt we had a chance to win the match.

We didn't match up well with them in the

middle weights, but I felt good about our

light and upper weight match ups. Our

lightweights did their part. They kept the

match close going in to what I felt was the

better part of Central's line-up. After get-

ting through that middle part of the line-

up, we were within striking distance com-

ing in to what I felt was our advantage To

be honest, he added, ...our upper weights

let us down. We lost 3 of those matches in

overtime. All of which were winnable. We

really missed an opportunity tonight, be-

cause I felt the winner of our match with

Central Catholic was in great position to

advance to the team State Tournament.
