The Collect of the Day (Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany)Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lessons The First Reading: Isaiah 58:1-9a

CommentaryThis is not the first time that God, through His prophet Isaiah, pointed out the futility of Israel simply adhering to a system of worship without changing attitudes and conduct. The people were practicing religious ritual to try to manipulate God into blessing them. They may have been bowing their heads, but they were not bowing their hearts. However, if His people changed their focus, putting God and the needs of others before self-interest, the Lord promised He would hear their prayers and they would enjoy His presence. Are there times that you bow your head but not your heart before the Lord?Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God. “Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?” Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindica-tor shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am.

The Word of the Lord.People: Thanks be to God.

The Epistle: 1 Corinthians 2:1-12CommentaryAs Paul continued to address challenges and conflicts in the Corinthian church, he elaborated on a theme he previously introduced, the contrast between God’s wisdom and man’s wisdom. Paul used the example of his own preaching to illustrate what the wisdom of God can do as opposed to what the words that people regard as wisdom can do. Paul’s preaching centered on one message, the saving grace of God in Christ Jesus. Paul’s goal was to focus his audience on

the excellence of the Savior, not the excellence of the preacher, and his point was this: the wisdom of God, which is incomprehensible to the world, is manifested in the life, death and resurrection of Christ. With the help of the Holy Spirit, every believer can attain understanding of God’s wisdom. When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wis-dom. Sermon “Inward Salt and Outward Light” The Rev. Ron Abrams

The Nicene Creed 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrec-tion of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Confession of Sin and Absolution 360Priest and PeopleMost merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.PriestAlmighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all good-ness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Eucharistic Prayer - C 369Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the full-ness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

Sanctus (S-130) (from Deutsche Messe), Franz Schubert, arr. Proulx

The Celebrant continues, saying in the midst of the prayer:

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Lord God of our Fathers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name.Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

The Celebrant continues, concluding with: Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you andthe Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

Amen.

THE

GRAPEVINEST. JAMES PARISH • WILMINGTON, NC

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 5, 2017

ALL OF GOD'S PEOPLE NEED REST"This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD." (Exodus 16:23)

I had a parishioner tell me the other day that she had called the parish to leave me a voicemail, followed by an email about an upcoming class on Friday. When she and I finally connected, she told me that she forgot that I am off on Fridays and that I don’t check my email on Fridays. She apologized for trying to get in touch with me when I was away from the church. I told her that she didn’t have to apologize because I turn off my email on my laptop and phone on Thursday evenings. She said, "Wow, those are some good boundaries."

This conversation made me think about the times we set aside for ourselves for rest and Sabbath. We talk about the importance of rest and downtime but, let’s be honest, our lives provide us with only a little bit of room for Sabbath. We are extremely busy. No matter what age we are and what we have going in our lives, we are constantly on the go and don’t necessarily think about slowing down for some genuine rest. Cookie Cantwell and I both taught formation classes last Sunday where everyone in our groups talked about how busy they are, how much competition there is for our time and attention, and sometimes how difficult it is to get to church. The bottom line is that we are active, busy, and engaged with a world that sometimes won’t let us slow down, and that’s why God knew we needed time off and rest. God gave us the Sabbath to disconnect from the world and reconnect with it when we have given ourselves a break and rested from all of the hectic demands of life.

God gave us the Sabbath and rest from not only the busyness in our lives but to recharge and revaluate what is happening in our relationship with God and our neighbors. If our work and busyness define who we are, we won’t have much of an identity when it comes to our faith because God wants us to have rest and time away from the hectic demands of life. As an ordained person, as well as a former lay youth minister, I knew that I had to intentionally create time away from my work. Otherwise it would consume me and I would not have any room for God or others. Without rest, I would not be able to slow down, take some time for myself, and recharge so I would be able to honestly be recharged for my work and ministries as a husband, father, and priest. We all need to create time for ourselves to rest, recharge, and find ways to be the Sabbath people that God has called us to be.

During the month of February and before Lent (which starts on Ash Wednesday, March 1), I would encourage you to re-evaluate how you take care of yourselves. Provide space for rest and a recharge. Maybe you can start carving some time out of your schedules to disconnect from technology, read a book, pray, take a walk, or just be still. God wants all of us to have rest in our lives, but we have to be willing to push our busyness aside and say, "It can wait. I need a break." We may not succeed in creating space for rest and Sabbath all of the time, but you know the old saying, "The start of any journey, (including the one towards authentic rest and Sabbath) begins with the first step." What’s stopping you from taking that first step today?

CONDOLENCES TO:The family and friends

of Mary Janet Durham Drummond

IN OUR PRAYERS:Cornelia Doss

Deborah Gille

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS A special thank you to Bob Godley, Mt. Lebanon Chapel Committee Chairman, and the many unsung heroes and members of the Mt. Lebanon Chapel Mow and Blow Teams who came out for a special work day on Saturday, January 21, 2017. Without the help of the many parishioners who willingly give their time, the Mt. Lebanon Chapel grounds could not be maintained without incurring a large financial cost to the Parish. The volunteers not only operate on a bi-weekly schedule during the summer season, but provide much needed year-round landscape maintenance to the grounds all year long. The congregation thanks you all.

INTERFAITH REFUGEE MINISTRIESThe Outreach Committee is considering sponsoring another family through Interfaith Refugee Ministries - Wilmington and needs to know if we have enough volunteers. The time commitment is significantly less than in past years, and a range of volunteer tasks from cooking a welcome meal to taking the family to appointments in town is available. Contact Derrick Miller ([email protected]), if you are interested or have questions.

KEEP IN TOUCH WHEN YOU MOVEIf you have moved or are soon planning to, please notify the Parish Office of your address change.

The office occasionally receives mail that is returned due to an outdated address. If the office determines you cannot be located, mailings may be discontinued until you contact us. Please keep us up to date on your moves! Contact Suzanne Adams at [email protected] to update your information.
