"God is always more." Have you ever heard that? If we truly believe that He is infinite, then this statement is worth exploring. Today, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit in power upon the early Church. But Pentecost wasn't the first time the disciples received the Holy Spirit. The Gospel actually occurs chronologically before Pentecost. Soon after the Resurrection, Jesus already "came and stood in their [the disciples'] midst... he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"

God is always more. Sometimes we might think the grace of God as one and done. God might break through in people's lives, but it's a one-time event on a retreat or preceding a dramatic conversion of life. But there's always more to come. Even today's Gospel isn't the first time the breath of God stirred. In Genesis, it's God's breath that stirs life into Adam in the garden. Jesus breathes on the Apostles, giving them the Holy Spirit in the quiet and silence. Later, that breath will stir into a "driving wind", and the Spirit will descend with flame...not unlike Moses on Mount Sinai.

God is always more. He has spoken throughout salvation history, and continues to speak into our lives through His Church and through the Holy Spirit alive in our hearts. This Pentecost Sunday, let us come before Him with expectant hearts! Like the disciples in the Gospel and first reading, let us await what "more" God will do.

Archdiocesan Marriage Day: Saturday, June 15, 10 a.m. Mass, Cathedral of Saint Paul, St. Paul Married couples, celebrate the gift of your vocation at the Archdiocesan Marriage Day Celebration Mass with Archbishop Bernard Hebda. When it comes to serving our fellow man, most of us tend to live with a mindset that posts a "Do Not Disturb" sign over our heart. We think: "I'm too busy." "Leave me alone." "I don't want to get involved." "I've got my own agenda." Our culture is overrun with the attitude, "It's all about me." But as Rick Warren writes in his best seller, The Purpose Driven Life, "A meaningful life begins when we realize it's not all about us. It's all about God." When we get to know our Creator through Jesus Christ, and begin to worship God and serve Him, we realize the way we serve God is to serve our fellow man--especially those in need. "It's all about me" is incredibly selfish, and it leads to emptiness and spiritual death. Real living begins when we start to know God, and serve Him. Serving God means serving others. It's one of the keys to discovering your life purpose. By Mike Fenton

Now that we finished the 2018/19 business year, and looking forward to a successful 2019/20, I like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for all there help and support.

Please try your best to have a safe and fun filled summer with family and friends.

From Father Mike Tix . . . .

As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, we recall the beginning of the church as the apostles and disciples, filled with the Holy Spirit, go out to witness to the Risen Christ, and form communities of faith that we would today call a parish. Over the last month of serving as Parochial Administrator, I’ve been able to have some great con-versations with people about church. Coming from these conversations, I’ve shared some thoughts in my homily this weekend about how St. Mathias, St. Mary, and St. John’s might build on a strong past towards a renewal of parish life. What follows is a condensed version of what I shared at Mass, with the full recognition that there is no single answer to a renewal of parish life, but that there should be priorities established. As I look to meet with the Parish Pastoral and Finance Councils of each parish, I hope to discuss all of this in more depth with them.

One of the keys that people expressed for a renewal of parish life has been young people and their relationship with church. I do believe that we can do something about that! I’m reminded of the writings of Pope Francis who has challenged all of us as church to go outside of our comfort zones to encounter people in their daily lives that is sometimes messy, to accompany them in ways that reflect God’s kindness that leads to a step in faith and greater engagement. Key in this outreach is our hospitality to welcome people, and their fits that make us a stronger parish rooted in the Body of Christ given for all. As one means to act in this area and specifically reach out to those 25-50 years of age, you’ll see in today’s bulletin an invitation that I hope you’ll extend to family, friends, and neighbors called “Church Chat.” I’m hoping “Church Chat” can be a beginning of Pope Francis’ encounter for greater numbers of both new people, and younger people.

Another key to the renewal of parish life is finances, and again I believe that we can do something about that! Each of the three parishes has large capital projects needing attention in the near future. At the same time, there is the daily cost of basic parish operations and programs. While special collections and fundraising efforts are important, more crucial are regular weekly contributions that are the bread and butter of parish life. As we come to the end of our fiscal year on June 30th, I invite and encourage you to review your contributions, and where necessary to catch-up if you’ve been gone or away. Looking ahead, I’d also challenge people to consider an increase in their contributions as we explore ideas of how to realize a bright future that begin now.

Often in asking people to increase their contributions, I’ve found that people like more clear direction of what’s being asked. Here’s my challenge. Can you increase your current contribution by $5 per week or $20 per month? Some may not be able to make an increase, but others may be able to do more. If you haven’t been a contributor in the past, we need you, and so could you start with $5 per week or $20 per month? Collectively everyone making a modest increase, multiplied by the number of households in each parish, can make a huge difference in the parish creating opportunities that not only address building needs, but also energize our gospel-centered mission to love and serve as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus for our world today.

As Parochial Administrator, I don’t know how long I’ll serve in this role, but while I’m in it, I believe that together we can set the foundation for great things to come. None of us can do this work alone, but together, filled with the same Holy Spirit that filled the apostles and disciples at Pentecost long ago, great things are possible for us here today if we open our minds and hearts in faith and trust.
