Bi-Monthly Condensed Highlands Newsletters From June Through September

As reflected in the issue numbers at the top of this page, this newsletter covers August & September activities and events in our community. The only full ads included are those with changes from previous editions.

Our snowbirds aren’t around and only the most hearty spend appreciable time outside during the day. So the newsletter staff has taken some time off and consolidated information into two newsletters for the summer.

This is the second and final of our bi-monthly versions of the newsletter. In October, we’ll resume publishing the newsletter every month.

More information about activities excluded for brevity can be found in past issues on our web-site. Meanwhile, keep an eye on the bulletin board for information and sign-up sheets for summer activities.

The Social Committee will be sending emails about activities and timely reminders of dates. Have a great summer!

Special Ticket Approach

We’re hoping that many of you will join us for our Highlands Hoedown, Saturday, August 22nd.

The ribs are a Weegar family favorite, and Chrissy Harriman is an entertainer who gets involved with her audience for a fun-filled evening.

We are trying a new approach to ticket purchases and timing of sales in an effort to

identify the exact number of ribs required well in advance. This is because the preparation is labor intensive for the large number of ribs we anticipate will be

needed for this event. Our approach includes the following:

1. Tickets will be go on sale early (three weeks before the dinner) - AND -sales will also end early (a week before the dinner.) So you’ll be able to buy tickets

only on two Thursdays - August 6th & 13th, and at the Community meeting on August 15th.

2. There will be 2 types of tickets for sale - one for a chicken dinner and one for a rib dinner. A rib dinner ticket entitles you to 3 ribs and all side dishes.

A chicken dinner ticket entitles you to 6oz portions of chicken breasts and sides.

3. Coupons for extra ribs will be on sale at the price of $1 per rib. So, if you want both chicken, and ribs buy a chicken dinner ticket and extra rib coupons. If you would like more

than 3 ribs and are buying a rib dinner, buy extra rib coupons. There will not be any coupons sold for extra chicken.

4. At the dinner, ribs and chicken will be served separately. To obtain your meat, you will redeem coupons for the number of ribs (or chicken portion) you should be served.

Any questions you have about how this works can be answered when you buy your tickets.

As always, we need volunteers to help with the setup, cooking, and clean-up for this event. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. Please note that we need quite a few

ovens to ensure that the corn bread and ribs all make it to the serving tables piping hot when we are ready to eat. If you will volunteer your oven and help monitor heating

something, please indicate so on the appropriate lines.

4

Page 5: The Highlands HighlightsLawn decorations and/or furniture that could become airborne missiles, patio furniture, sidewalk lighting fixtures, wind chimes, flags and even potted plants!

Ticket price TBD. Set to cover cost of ice cream and prizes.

Please sign up on the sheets on the clubhouse bulletin board if you plan on

participating and/or are willing to lend a hand with setup and/or clean-up afterwards.

Price for admission is a dish to share - one per household. The Social Committee will provide a sweet & sour pork with rice dish to share of ample quantity to ensure

everyone can have some. Other entrees will be welcome. Lemonade, Sweetened Tea and Tableware will also be provided by the Social Committee. Any other drinks are BYOB. Please indicate on the signup sheet what dish you will be bringing. It will be

appreciated if you help keep the variety of food balanced.

Bring or wear your swimming attire. If there are enough willing participants there will be organized pool games.

If you have lawn chairs you can transport, please bring them with you. Seating at the pool is limited, and we can’t use furniture from the clubhouse.

Barb Geiling, Donna VanWieren, Jo Basile, Anne Traub, Nancy Meech, Betty Thibault, Norma Slemmer, Juanita Byrd, Joan Shaia, Judy Ricker, Chris Weegar, Maureen Russo,

Barbara Towe, Lynda Chynoweth, Nora Spires, Kathy Docker, Mariana Marz, Cheryl Henrion,

Julia Koch, Sharon Proue, Terri Pawlicki, Sue Hammerling, Helen Stuecklen, Jane Suddath

Please call Barb Geiling or any other committee member if you desire any of these services, if you know of a neighbor who needs help, or if you are interested in helping this committee in any way.

The Sunshine Committee lends support and a helping hand to residents experiencing health challenges or dealing with grief. We are prepared to make hospital and home visits, send cards, bring home-made soup, provide transportation for doctor visits, and help with pets in absences due to crises.

The Sunshine Committee would like to provide mid-year help to the family that we adopted last Christmas (a grandmother responsible for 4 young children 2-8). As if she didn’t have enough to deal with, Shirley is currently recovering from bypass surgery followed by complications that kept her in the hospital and rehab for weeks in late spring and this summer. Now Shirley and her grandchildren need help with school supplies and clothes, so we are collecting donations on their behalf.

If you would like to help, you can make a donation of any amount and give it to any of the members of the Sunshine Committee. (The Sunshine Committee ladies are identified in the Sunshine Committee’s ad above.)

Because school starts in mid-August, we would like all donations in by the 9th of August so that we will have some time to go shopping for the children. If you would like to shop yourself for the children, you are welcome to do so. Barb Geiling has the school lists and can suggest items, or she would appreciate knowing what you plan to purchase so we avoid unneeded duplication.

As always, thanks for generous giving.

Mahjongg Players

There is organized mahjongg play at the clubhouse on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Players meet at 1:00 PM on Monday and Friday and at 9:30 AM on Tuesday. The session on Tuesday does not involve prize money. If you are interested in learning to play mahjongg, contact either Nancy Meech or Zoe Lyons.

Marathons are generally held the first Monday of the month. We start play at 9:00 AM and play straight through until 1:00 PM. Throughout the morning we take short breaks to move around and partake of food brought by the players for themselves. Up to 16 games can be played during a marathon depending on the speed of play. $5 per player is collected for the prize fund for the marathon. All players are welcome. Marathon players are encouraged to come early so there is sufficient time to get everyone signed in and games set up so play can begin promptly at 9:00 AM.

August’s marathon will be on Monday, August 3rd. Because our Labor Day event falls on the first Monday of the month, September’s marathon will be on the preceding Monday, August 31st. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board several weeks before each marathon.

The winners of June’s marathon were: 1st place - Terry Pawlicki, 2nd place - Pam Gregory, and 3rd place - Randi Hathaway. The winners of July’s marathon with 12 players were: 1st place - Vicki Rudegeair, 2nd place - Pat Carey, and 3rd place - Lucy Kraepel.

From the Highlands Resident Managers

Howard and Rita Mathis

Office: 352-518-4607

Sincerely, Rita and Howard Community Management

9

August is here and so are we. Hometown America executives are taking a long time to select a replacement for us. They are committed to finding a new manager who will take pride in the Community and its residents. At this time they have two candidates who they are interviewing. We will stay on through the end of August if needed to make the transition as smooth as possible for the new managers.

With all the heat and rain, many of our homes have turned green with algae. The weeds grow faster than the grass along with the shrubs. Please go out and determine if your home is in need of attention. Please make arrangements to get it in compliance if action is needed.

You may not notice the condition of your home, but other Residents do. Please be considerate and keep your site looking its best year round.

Road work is scheduled to begin August 6th. They will be working on the bad area on Callaway. On Friday August 7th, the road crew will be sealcoating all the streets from Masters Blvd. throughout the top of the hill. That area will be closed Friday and most of Saturday. We ask for your patience during this repair time.

The owners of the golf course have agreed to pave the cart path on the 11th hole from Callaway to the end of the tee boxes. The paving of this area will stop the dirt from running into Callaway each time it rains. We thank First Federal and Mr. John Evenhouse for agreeing to this improvement and for being a good neighbor.

We have had several complaints regarding parking in the streets, empty lots, and also parking in areas that block other residents from leaving their home or causing them to maneuver awkwardly to get out of their drive. We encourage you to read the Rules and Regulations regarding parking. Street parking is only for a short period of time, such as a delivery or a quick visit. All other parking is to be done in the parking lot at the Clubhouse. At no time should a vehicle be parked on the wrong side of the street against traffic or on curves.

Smoking at the pool area is now limited to the Northeast gazebo. A sign has been placed stating “Designated Smoking Area” on the said gazebo. Please remember that no alcoholic beverages are permitted in the pool area except when pre-approved by management for a resident function.

We ask that all Rules and Regulations be followed for the safety and wellbeing of all the residents.

Howard and I would like to let each of you know how much we have enjoyed being part of such a beautiful community shared with such wonderful people.

Nicholson’s House for Sale

Have relatives or friends who may be interested in living at The Highlands? Ask them to take a look at the home for sale by Ken & Barb Nicholson at 39147 Golf View Avenue on

The Hill. The buyer gets a beautiful home with many upgrades (most of the furniture and entertainment system too) and a great view.

And, immediately after the sale’s closing, you get $1,000 for the referral.

June 20th, 2015 Highlands Community Business Meeting Minutes

Meeting opened at 9:00. Moderator was Charlie Basile. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Charlie Basile. Invocation was led by Bob Sneed.

• Sue Hammerling, Treasurer, went over the treasury report. Our funds had gone down approximately $1,000.00 due to purchases of flags for our veteran memorial and the previously approved purchase of induction pots and plates for our kitchen. Additionally we purchased several supplies for our kitchen including new table cloths.

• Sunshine Committee report by Barb Geiling. We gave out two baskets this month. Barb asked for volunteers to make baked goods for the baskets. She is running low on supplies. Barb also mentioned that if you are going to put cards in the box in the library make sure you put the recipients full name and address on the envelope or they cannot be delivered.

• Anne LaFontaine, our new social committee Publicity Representative gave her report. There is a casual get together tonight, June 20th. There will be a Bob Hope video being shown. There are no more available tickets as the food has already been purchased and is currently being prepared for the number of people already signed up. On July 4th we are holding Hot Dog night starting at 5 pm. On July 22, 2015 there will be Pizza Night with pizzas and salad for $7.00 per person. It starts at 6 pm. On August 12, 2015 we will hold regular Hot Dog Night starting at 5 pm. On August 22, 2015 we are having a Western Hoedown. Food, time and entertainment is still under discussion. A notice will be on the bulletin board with the final details.

• Jayne Haas wanted to again remind everyone using the gym to put the free weights back on the rack correctly. This morning several weights were ready to fall off the rack once again. This is very dangerous. We do not want someone to be seriously injured because a resident or their guest has been careless.

• Deb Riss passed out a restaurant survey to everyone to fill out with details on their favorite restaurant. The purpose is for new residents who may not know the area to see what is out there for them to enjoy a new place to eat or for our current residents to broaden their eating horizons. There is a box in the library for your recommendations. Deb will compile a list within the next month and post the results on the bulletin board.

• Pat Hendricks wanted to remind everyone that we have rules in place in regard to our pool. If you have company that would like to use our pool THEY MUST BE REGISTERED AT THE OFFICE AND HAVE A BAND ON THEIR WRIST. Also if they are under age you as their sponsor must accompany them to the pool and stay there with them. If you are not clear on the pool rules please refer to your handbook or check with Rita and/or Howard. Also if any guests are there and are not abiding by these rules they shouldn’t be surprised or belligerent if they are challenged by a resident to prove they belong there. Pat also mentioned that there have been occasions when people “off the street” have decided to show up and take advantage of our pool facilities. They have no affiliation with anyone in the Highlands. This should be reported to the office immediately so these people can be asked to leave the premises. Lorraine Davenport asked if it is possible to restrict guests to the afternoons only at the pool. Another solution put forward was that the lock on the gate at the entry actually be working so you need a key to enter the pool area.

• Charlie Basile mentioned that anyone in need of a cell phone can obtain one for free at Walmart if you are on Medicare or a Veteran. Information is on the bulletin board. Ken Davenport has one of these phones and is very happy with it.

• Norman Thibeaux mentioned that the newspaper recycling bin is overstuffed again. It was also brought up that people are throwing cardboard boxes in the bin without breaking them down first. This takes up way too much room. Please make sure that you take the time to break down any boxes you may put in the bin. Rita and Howard call the company to do their pickups but apparently the company is very slow to respond.

Meeting adjourned at 9:20. The next meeting will be held on July 18, 2015, the third Saturday of July.

Jayne Haas, Community Secretary

Yard refuse: Call Howard or Rita if you wish to have HTA staff pick up lawn refuse you’ve created during a yard clean-up. If you’ve had professionals clean-up your yard, they should remove the refuse as part of their service.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please call one of the following telephone numbers or visit the web pages listed below: Pasco County Southwest Florida Water Management District

(813) 996-7341 or (800) 368-2411 or (800) 848-0499 or 4498 Extension 8131, 8041, or 8145 www.pascocountyfl.net www.watermatters.org

Low volume micro-irrigation (i.e., drip irrigation, misters, soaker hoses) or hand watering (using a hose with a self-canceling or shut-off nozzle, or both) of trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetable gardens may be used on an as-needed basis without regard to the normally allowable watering days or times. No special or extra watering is allowed for over-seeding an existing lawn.

Washing of personal vehicles is permitted once per week, only on the owners designated watering day, and using a self-canceling nozzle or automatic shut-off device. Decorative fountains or water features are prohibited unless they provide a necessary aeration and/or water quality benefit.

month’s issue. All articles and updates should be sent to [email protected] or deposited in the box

on the clubhouse bulletin board no later than the 20th of the month preceding publication. Every effort is made

to include all submissions, but occasionally omissions will occur. Your understanding is appreciated. Comments and

articles submitted anonymously are ignored. Please note that items submitted for the newsletter are subject to

Ticket Sales for Social Committee

Sponsored Highlands Events

Unless stated otherwise on event flyers or newsletter ads, tickets for all Social Committee sponsored events are sold at the clubhouse on Thursday nights before bingo and before Community meetings which are held on the third Saturday of each month. Cash payment is preferred, but

checks made out to the Community Treasurer, Sue Hammerling, are acceptable. When tickets are sold, a

ticket is required to participate in any part of the event. All ticket sales are final. No refunds will be issued, however, we will assist with “resales” when feasible.
