THE HIGHLANDER Volume 07/2017 July, 2017 ~ CELEBRATE FREEDOM ~ On July 4th, Independence Day, we celebrate our freedom with a traditional Family Day Bar-B-Que. Residents, family and friends, please join us at 11:00 am in the Garden Room for The Pledge of Allegiance, and God Bless America sung by resident vocalist Robert Bollinger accompanied by pianist Marie Hyland followed by a Patriotic Sing Along. At 11:30 am, enjoy our BBQ Luncheon with hot dogs, hamburgers and salads. Complete your BBQ experience with popcorn, peanuts, cotton candy, ice cream sandwiches and sno-cones. At 1:30 pm it’s Ready-Set-Go, time for our annual Family Fun & Games: Watermelon Eating Contest; Hula Hoops; Egg Race; Water Balloon Toss & more with exciting prizes for our winners. It’s sure to be a day of fun in the sun for everyone. Throughout the month and always, let us remember and be thankful for our freedom. Concerts on the Patio continue with our first concert of the month on July 1st which features the return of The Symphomaniacs, a group of musicians from the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra who perform a variety of classical and pop musical arrangements ranging from baroque to the Beatles. Humor included. Fun guaranteed! On July 8th, we welcome pianist Mark Cole presenting operatic soloist Maximo Marcusso. On July 15th, Mickey Fruchter presents Banjo Buddies, a banjo band which is sure to be an exciting and unique experience. On the 22nd, it’s The Ultimate Duo with Gale Stoddard on piano and vocalist Roland Valentino who will provide popular musical classics such as Unforgetable; Get Your Kicks on Route 66; God Bless the USA; Impossible Dream; & a Glenn Miller Medley… We end this month’s Concerts on the Patio on the 29th with a Legendary Tribute by vocalist Ron Robin with the songs of Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Frankie Vallee, Tom Jones, Elvis and many more. Residents, families and friends, please join us on Saturday evenings for the many sounds of music that are sure to bring you enjoyment and relaxation. Our Getting To Know You this month will feature resident volunteer Kevin Peterson. Let’s get to know all about Kevin, our newly appointed Getting To Know You editor. Mondays at 2:00 PM Beading Class - Garden RoomBeading Classes return. Join new resident Donna Mabry for beading and jewelry making classes. Join the fun. It’s a great creative opportunity to take home a new bracelet, necklace or earrings for yourself or as a gift.

Tuesdays at 2:00 PM Knitwits - Club RoomJoin new resident Mary Ann Plumley to create afghan squares for Project Warm-Up-America. She will send our squares to the national program headquarters where they will be transformed into patchwork afghans for those in need in homeless shelters across America. Please think about joining-in to help Pasadena Highlands support and contribute to this most worthy cause.

JPL Lecture Series Thursday, July 13th at 6:30 PMFive Years of Exploring Gale Crater with the Curiosity Mars Rover. Nearly five years after its celebrated arrival at Mars, the Curiosity rover continues to reveal Mars as a once-habitable planet. Early in the planet’s history, generations of streams and lakes created the landforms that Curiosity explores today. The rover currently is climbing through the foothills of Mount Sharp, a 3-miile-high mountain formed from sediment brought in by water and wind. This talk, given by James K. Erickson, Mars Science Laboratory Project Manager, JPL and Dr. Ashwin R. Vasavada, Mars Science Laboratory Project Scientist, JPL will cover the latest findings from the mission, the challenges of exploration with an aging robot, and what lies ahead. Cost: Free

HEALTH TOPICSDaily by Appointment Speech-Language Pathology - Fitness RoomRehab Care will provide Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). This special type of Speech Therapy offers comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment programs for residents who have developed speech, swallowing, or cognitive speech issues.
