CULTURE

YOUTHZONEGeostream’s Gift to Notts Charity Family CareA Mansfi eld IT company, Geostream Solutions Ltd, has donated a Nottingham Forest Football shirt signed by all of the players to Notts charity Family Care based on Magdala Road.

Matthew Caunt, Director at Geostream Solutions Ltd said that this gift will now be used to raise money for the charity. “Geostream are pleased to be able to support the great work that Family Care do. Hopefully the auction will raise a lot of interest and money for what is such a worthy cause. At Geostream’s base here in Mansfi eld we are not short of a few dedicated Forest fans and if the shirt raises as much interest as it did in the offi ce we will be delighted!”

Steve Hargrave, Director at Family Care said the charity had been using Geostream for their IT services for two years, “We’re really grateful to Geostream for donating this signed shirt for our fundraising efforts. It’s great to know that Geostream recognise the work that Family Care do and want to help us in raising vital funds so we can continue reaching out to children, young people and their families when they need us most”.

Family Care are a voluntary agency offering services in adoption and family support and hope that the desirable

shirt will interest football fans across Nottinghamshire in to entering a bid. Steve Hargrave said, “This time of year is an exciting and magical time for a lot of people, but it can be especially hard for families where there have been signifi cant changes and losses. Family Care are committed to offering care, stability and guidance in helping families through hard times, and ensuring that they have positive experiences. Whoever is the lucky bidder on this shirt will not only be making a lucky Nottingham

Forest fan’s Christmas, but they will be helping the families we work with in 2013 and ensuring better Christmases and futures for them too”.

People interested in making a bid on the shirt are asked to contact Chris Burton, Finance and Fundraising Co-ordinator on 0115 9603010 or by email: [email protected] Closing date for the bids is 5pm on Wednesday 12th December.

Three cheers for students’ achievements Families and friends joined students for a celebration of achievement ceremony at West Nottinghamshire College last week (10 December).

Almost 60 students celebrated their achievements on a range of foundation studies programmes. Among those being congratulated were students from the college’s BAY6 coffee bar and café – which provides a practical training and working environment for students with learning diffi culties or disabilities.

Students were presented with certifi cates for completing their studies as well as scooping trophies for outstanding achievements.

The trophy for personal progress went to David Guest, 19, from Hucknall and the trophy for outstanding learner of the year went to Jamie

Herberts, 17, from Kirkby-in-Ashfi eld.

Curriculum manager for care and education studies, Yvonne Jackson, said: “It was wonderful to see so many of our students’ families joining us for the annual celebration of achievement.

“Each and every student was praised for the efforts they’ve put into their studies this year. For many of our learners it’s not just about gaining qualifi cations, it’s about gaining new confi dence and social skills that they can then apply to their everyday lives.

“We’re very proud of all of our students and it’s particularly pleasing to know that so many of them will be continuing their further education studies at the college after their initial programmes have fi nished.”

Newark Business Awards 2012 - A ‘Tallent’ for business commitment to the communityWould it be third time lucky for local solicitors Tallents at the Newark Business Awards 2012? Fingers were crossed as the nominees for Business Commitment to the Community were read out and the celebrations started when the winner’s name was announced – Tallents Solicitors.

Says Alistair Millar, partner at Tallents: “Tallents has been supporting the local communities around Newark and North Nottinghamshire since it was founded in 1774 and we were absolutely delighted to have the hard work of our staff recognised by this award. “As a company, we’ve always tried to consider the impact our activities will have on the wider community beyond legal services and we’ve always enjoyed supporting a wider range of community endeavors over the years.”

Wedding DayFor The

Top Tips for Wedding PlanningPlanning your dress: Start in bridal shops! Let them measure and advise you to work out the parts of your body that you are happy with and the parts you would rather disguise. Experiment with different fabrics and fi nd the one that gives you confi dence to wear and that you really like.Planning your shoes: Try them out It's wise to wear your shoes before the big day to ensure comfort and avoid getting blisters as you will be standing a long time and dancing too. Only wear them inside the house and tell the future groom to keep his eyes looking away.Planning your diet: Don’t let dieting take over your day Try and keep your goals realistic and sensible as you may not be able to reach an ideal fi gure by starving or living in the gym. You’ll be exhausted and hungry by the time the wedding arrives and in no mood to party. Planning your gift list: Seek inspiration from magazines and online gift sites Bear in mind the gifts should have a range of prices and spread from luxury to functions to give everyone a chance to buy you something. Publicise the list via facebook or in the wedding invitations.Planning the budget: Budget for all eventualities Don’t forget the important things like Venue, Cars, fl owers, catering, honeymoon and set a limit to match the purse of the parents not a sky high awkward fi gure that means a second mortgage!

Planning for the weather: Michael Fish alert! Don’t ignore the forecasts and get look at the historical reports ofr the area and choose wisely. If it is bad weather plan for umbrellas or cover to protect the guests Mud and wedding gowns don’t mix so consider fl oor protection to keep you in mint condition. Planning the venue: Guests Guests Guests Some venues appear on paper to be perfect, so visit and check them out, so they hold no surprises. Have a contingency in mind if the place burns down, fl oods or gets snowed in!Planning the decor: Get advice from mums and mum in-law They are your biggest source of close personal experienced advice and also can take away some of the burden of negotiating on design and cost for you. Planning for your guests: 50% will be strangers! A fantastic way to “icebreak” the reception is to encourage guests get to place a one line fact about each themselves on the back of their place card, and take turns to share the fact with the other guests on the table – nothing sexist or vulgar only amusing or interesting to encourage socialising."Planning the ‘thank you’: Get personal with your words or small gifts Personalised gifts really mean something to your parents and bridesmaids should act as a reminder of your love for them and the memory of your special day.

Volunteer rough sleepers required ahead of Mansfi eld Big Snore

The Big Snore, which has attracted its fi rst sponsor this year in the shape

of Western Power Distribution, will again raise money for Framework’s Mansfi eld Appeal, which helps former rough sleepers to develop independent, happy and prosperous lives in the community.

People in Mansfi eld are being urged to sleep rough for a single night next month to ensure that others don’t have to.

Mansfi eld St Mark’s Church, in partnership with the homelessness charity Framework, is challenging people to give up their warm beds for a single night and take part in the ninth annual Mansfi eld Big Snore at St Mark’s Church, Nottingham Road, on Friday, January 25th 2013.

Framework believes that around seven people are currently sleeping rough in the Mansfi eld area every night – a number that would be signifi cantly higher if it was not for its work in the town.

Last year’s event, which raised almost £18,000, allowed Framework to launch a specialist “move-on” service at its accommodation complex in Sherwood Street that focuses solely on supporting former rough sleepers into long-term accommodation. As a result, the number of people moving on – and thus the numbers able to move in – has nearly trebled.

Peter Radage, Framework Service Director for Homelessness and Housing, said: “Rough sleeping remains a serious issue in Mansfi eld, which is the most signifi cant centre of rough sleeping in the county outside of Nottingham.

Event organiser Pam Bishop from St Mark’s, who has been involved with the project for the last eight years, said: “This all started in January 2005 with a choir member and friend sleeping out overnight on the church steps. They raised £250 which we gave to our Framework neighbours at Sherwood Street Centre prompting us to fi nd out more about homelessness in the town.

Since then we have built up a good

relationship with Framework doing what we can to raise awareness of homelessness, to lobby for better services and provision, to help in practical ways and raise funds for their invaluable work. We look forward to another successful event this time.’ .

Graham Paling, Western Power Distribution’s Team Manager for Mansfi eld, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Mansfi eld Big Snore. The work that the charity does is crucial to helping homeless people in the area, particularly at this time of year when it is cold outside. Some of our own staff will be taking part on the night and we hope that the event is the most successful yet, raising valuable funds for The Mansfi eld Appeal.”

Sir Alan Meale MP, who has taken part in the event for each of the last four years, will again don his woolly hat, gloves and overcoat to sleep out this year. He explained: “Mansfi eld and the surrounding areas still have a serious rough sleeping problem, and that is something that should concern all of us.

The event, which is open to all ages, will begin at 8.30pm, when participants can enjoy hot refreshments and also take a moment to refl ect on homelessness. It will end with a cooked breakfast the following morning at 7am. Participants are asked to bring their own materials to construct a shelter in the car park and keep themselves warm for the night.

If you would like to take part please visit www.frameworkha.org/bigsnore.

DNCC Welcomes Ofsted Skills ReportDerbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce (DNCC) has welcomed the publication of a new national report aimed at ensuring that more young people are better prepared for the world of work.

The new report, unveiled by Ofsted today, sets out in detail a number of recommendations aimed at boosting the enterprise-related skills and entrepreneurial spirit amongst young people entering the workforce. DNCC has long-campaigned for this issue to be addressed, following the publication of its Skills Survey* of more than 400 local employers in October 2011.

The survey found that more than 40% of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire fi rms have struggled to recruit the right calibre of employee, with almost two-thirds saying they would be reluctant to hire school-leavers with no or few qualifi cations. A worrying percentage of businesses also claimed that many of the candidates they interviewed for roles within their organisations did not possess the right skills for the job – including poor levels of literacy and numeracy; “soft skills” like

timekeeping and communication; and, crucially, the right attitude towards work.

Chamber President Ian Greenaway wrote to Business Secretary Vince Cable and Education Secretary Michael Gove with the fi ndings of the survey earlier this year. As a result, he was invited to be one of the one of the guest speakers at a Social Mobility Seminar in London today alongside Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and jointly hosted by Ofsted Chairman Baroness Sally Morgan and Business in the Community Vice President Dame Julia Cleverdon, where the new report was launched.

Mr Greenaway said: “The Chamber has been lobbying Government to take a look at the issues surrounding the work-preparedness of our young adults for a long time now, so it’s good to see both a recognition of these challenges and an acknowledgement of the need for the business and education communities to work together to address them.

“The Chamber has done some extensive work in exploring the issues relating to the skills gap that many employers believe exists with our school leavers. These views have been shared with Ofsted at a senior level and it’s good to see some

of these ideas refl ected in this report.

“Today’s schoolchildren are tomorrow’s workforce and it is vital that schools and colleges are made aware of the importance of employability behaviours among pupils and their responsibility for ensuring students of all abilities are given the best chance of getting a job.

“We also need to see more partnership working between businesses and schools – that means business people going into schools, more teachers given the opportunity to spend time with businesses and young people who have entered employment through a selection of routes telling students of their experiences.

“And there needs to be a more holistic approach by the Departments for Education; and Business, Innovation and Skills than is currently apparent, which would ensure that the output of our schools and colleges is more closely aligned with the needs of local business – the primary driver of economic growth in the UK.”

Local Media Company; SMB’s client, NAPIT win 2nd Marketing Campaign AwardSMB Consultancy are very proud to announce their client NAPIT’s second success in winning a national Marketing Campaign of the Year Award at the Electrical Industry Awards Ceremony, held at London’s prestigious Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington. . The ceremony followed the Trade Association Forum (TAF) Best Practice Awards where NAPIT won their fi rst award at Plaisterer’s Hall, London, earlier this year.

NAPIT - who strive to uphold standards throughout the electrical industry - were able to fend off some stiff competition to claim a second Marketing Campaign of the Year Award with their winning ‘promotion by postcode campaign’ NAPIT Group Deputy Chief Executive, Michael Andrews, said: “This has been a great year for NAPIT. Our Marketing Department, working with SMB Consultancy, has been working extremely hard to promote our members and these awards really are the ‘icing on the cake’ for the campaign. We feel very privileged to have had our hard work and success recognised across the industry and honoured in this way by two separate judging panels.”

The marketing campaign, which continues to run on a quarterly basis in local newspapers across the country, uses a targeted ‘promotion by postcode’ approach, helping consumers fi nd NAPIT registered tradesmen in their region.

Also featuring regular editorial, NAPIT’s award-winning initiative covers electrical safety, the benefi ts of renewable energy technologies and the importance of using a Registered Installer. Most importantly, it includes the contact details of local NAPIT registered tradesmen and businesses, helping homeowners contact competent tradespeople in their area. Alongside this editorial, the NAPIT Marketing Team also ran a series of competitions, including a range of prizes worth up to £500.

Stewart Rickersey of SMB Consultancy stated “My team are delighted to share in winning this second award and take great pride in the effectiveness of their campaign in promoting NAPIT’s members and providing consumers with the peace of mind that comes with hiring competent, highly skilled and reliable tradesmen from a nationally recognised organisation.”

He will also explain some do, don’ts and myths of exporting and how they continue to work extensively with UKTI, DNCC and marketing specialists to refi ne their approach and get the best advice

Following on Stewart Rickersey will be offering a talk entitled “The Sister Cities Association of Mansfi eld, England”. This organisation is dedicated to forging links between other Mansfi eld’s around the world. “We work closely with Mansfi eld District Council who have a formal twinning relationship with Mansfi eld, Ohio, USA and Mansfi eld Rotary Club who are twinned with Mansfi eld Rotary Club in Mansfi eld, Massachusetts”.

The Sister Cities Association has been in existence since 1989, and has close links with its namesakes all over the world. Over the years there have been many international contacts, both personal and business, and citizens of nearly all the Mansfi eld’s in the world have visited - or been visited by - citizens of other Mansfi eld’s around the world. As a result of these exchanges our Mansfi eld has benefi tted greatly with 2010 now 2020 being a copy of a similar business organisation in Ohio, the introduction of DARE to the UK and our Rotary Club’s annual Courage Awards held in March”. Mastering Social MediaHello and welcome to the 4th edition of “Ask an Internet Entrepreneur”. I’d like to begin by wishing you a very ‘HAPPY and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR 2013!’

I’ve created a special gift for you to help you make it your best ever year online so make sure you keep reading to the end of this article.

In December’s edition, you may recall the survey where we asked you to vote for one of the 4 websites to see which one you liked most. Here they are again:

Many of you will not be surprised to hear that website B was the winner with an overwhelming result due mainly for its use of video which shows the people behind the business and demonstrates its power to engage and build a relationship online. As one respondent remarked “It’s the next best thing to television. I feel like I know them after watching the video”

If you missed the last edition, you can take a look at the winning website by visiting www.marketingrestaurant.co.uk

Don’t forget to click and play the video to see the power of using video on your website and consider what video could do for you if you’re not already using it.

As I explained previously, it is expected that 90% of Google search results will be video by 2015, so unless you are using video in your business, potential customers aren’t going to fi nd you in the future!

Ok, here it is...My special gift to you is “7 Top tips that you must be doing for your business online in 2013” to attract your ideal customer.

What are these funny codes?QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademarked symbol for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional bar code). They were fi rst designed for use in the car industry in Japan. Bar codes are optical machine-readable labels attached to items that transmit information related to the item, such as product codes. Initially the codes design was patented, but the patent holder chose not to enforce the rights so they are free to use for all.

Recently, the QR Code system has become popular due to its fast readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. Commercial businesses and media sources publicise all sorts of information to customers in a QR format, that smart phone apps especially can give an “instant browsing opportunity”

The code consists of black modules (square dots) arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded may be made up of four standardized types (“modes”) of data (numeric, alphanumeric, byte / binary, Kanji), or through supported extensions, virtually any type of data. Most smart phones have an “App” to scan the code using your camera function and you can download or use free cloud software sites to compose your own coded QR.

Well I did warn you in the December shortened edition that you would receive a double dose of ‘Di’s Leisure Blog’ in January but sorry I didn’t tell you it would be the last as I am handing over this spot to another far more interesting lady from February as I will be focusing on the Editor’s Interview pages talking to some ‘Movers and Shakers’ in the big world.

Well it seems some of you are reading this blog thankfully as on a recent coach trip from Mansfi eld to Manchester I was recognised by some other travellers. Ooh is your son back from university for Christmas they asked? Oh have you bought those zebra boots with you? How do you walk in those? Wow I am as famous as Carrie from Sex and The City – Mansfi eld is the new ‘New York’. Mmmm maybe not. Anyway great to meet all you readers and I am sure you all enjoyed the trip to see the wonderful, charming, gorgeous, handsome, charismatic (ice box please) Andre Rieu at the Arena in Manchester. The concert was amazing and I will defi nitely going to Maastricht his home town to see him next year. Thanks to Omega Travel a division of The Chad newspaper who organised the fabulous weekend – can you do one to Holland please?

Did you have a nice Christmas? I did with my Son at home and the both of us fl at out on the settee after a three bird roast eating quality streets. The most unique gift I received this year was an ‘Embrace life’ and ‘Shine’ Happiness Kit. The small box contained; an eraser so you can make your mistakes

Fashion: Winter Woollies For All The Family

Gone are the days when woolly jumpers were just for keeping warm. Today, winter

woollies are a fashion statement.

LadiesDesigners are experimenting with shape, texture and colour, making woollens one of the most versatile additions to every lady’s wardrobe. This also makes them one of the most cost effective purchases you can make this season.

The way a jumper feels on your skin is very important and there are plenty of different wools to choose from. The luxury prestige attached to cashmere often attracts a hefty price tag but it is also one of the lightest and softest wools, along with merino. These types of wool make great scarves, feeling comfortable against delicate skin, but also make glamorous fi ne knit jumpers and dresses suitable for both day wear and evening occasions.

Heavy, cable knit sweaters are often available at a more affordable price and can be very chic when worn with a pair of fi tted trousers and heels. Oversize is a key style trend, so keep everything else sleek and let your knitwear do the talking.

As we move towards spring, alpine patterns are replaced by tribal ones. Greys and browns also shift to bold, bright colours. For the quirky fashionista, animal motifs have also been popular amongst designers and offer a youthful, wistful impression.

GentsWoollens have become a men’s fashion staple too, with knitwear from jumpers, to hats and scarves, completing the season’s

statement looks.

Heritage inspired pieces from tweed blazers and

fl eecy lumberjack shirts are hugely popular this winter. This season’s woollens thoroughly refl ect this trend with knits sporting elbow patches and pockets.

Robust heavy knits in browns and greens also work well with

the military look. Sweaters with suede, leather or corduroy shoulder pads evoke this bold and powerful style. Complete the look, with a wool or fur lined bomber hat.

The Little Ones

An array of beautiful and super-cute knits for children are available on the high street. The little ones will love bold

animal patterns or, for those a little older, there are plenty of knits adorned with buttons and sequins. Why not add some of the high street’s

imaginatively designed woolly hats, scarves and gloves to keep them extra warm this winter?

Karen’s Top Hat Tips for Face Shapes1. Your face shape is a good indicator of what type of

hat will suit you. Karen offers us these simple rules:2. Round face: look for a hat with a broad brim.3. Long face: look for some kind of softness/movement

- coque feathers are good for this.4. Square face: look for an asymmetric hat that will

balance your jaw line.5. Heart shaped face: if you’re very lucky, you can get

away with virtually any kind of hat.6. If you wear glasses, don’t let them overpower the

hat. A hat with an upturned brim at the front will frame your face.

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PAY FOR LONG-TERM CARE?

The funding of long-term care is becoming a major political issue, but for many families it is already a burning personal issue. It is estimated that more than 20,000 a year are forced to sell their homes to pay for care (Source: www.adviceoncare.co.uk – January 2012) and that number could be on the increase given rising care costs.

Some people do get state help. Depending on your income you may get state help, although a person who owns his or her home is likely to fail the local authority means test and be deemed a “self-funder”. In England, this threshold is £23,250 which has been frozen until 2013 (in Wales it is £23,250 and in Scotland £24 750,) (Source: www.caretobedifferent.co.uk- October 2012).

In most cases this includes the value of any property owned. However, there are circumstances in which the family home is ignored: if you have a spouse or relative aged 60 or over still living in the home it will not be included within the local authority’s fi nancial assessment. It should also be ignored if your care needs are classed as “temporary”.

In addition, if your other assets, excluding the home, are less than £23,250, then you should not be charged for the fi rst 12 weeks. Those in this situation can request that a legal charge is put on their home rather than selling it upfront.

You need to be aware that not all benefi ts are means-tested. For example, people who need nursing care (as opposed to “personal care”) will receive a contribution towards these costs, regardless of their fi nancial position. In England this is normally paid at £108 a week, with payments made direct to the nursing home. It is important to remember, however, that reliance on the state comes at the cost of choice of the care you receive.

For many people the self-funding route is going to be their only option. It is a worrying prospect as the cost of care can quickly add-up and eat into your savings.

On average, someone who requires care in a residential care home will pay £524 per week, and for a nursing care home £722

per week (weighted averages for the whole of the UK, source Laing & Buisson Care of Elderly People UK Market Survey 2011/12), a huge ongoing amount to fi nd at any age, let alone in later years. However, these are averages across local authority funded and self funded care, many self funders will pay much more than these averages.

It doesn’t take much to work out that you wouldn’t have to be in a care home for too long before you or your family had spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on paying fees.

In the past, pre-funded care insurance plans were an option – aimed at those who think they might need to go into care in the future. But as it stands not one UK insurer provides pre-funded insurance today with the last provider exiting the market in 2010, citing lack of demand.

Instead, perhaps the most popular option for paying for long-term care is an immediate care annuity, which pays a tax free fi xed income for life, provided that it is paid directly to the care home provider.

This can provide some certainty for people moving into care, as they know their fees will be guaranteed to be paid for life; their money will not run out and they will not have to move into a local authority-run home later. There is also the reassurance that whatever is left from the sale of the home, once the annuity has been bought, can be left to the next generation.

The price depends on a person’s age and health when going into care – the longer the insurer expects them to live, the larger the upfront

cost. Most providers, however, allow you to buy “capital protection”, which refunds part of the cost in such circumstances. You can also pay into plans that protect against infl ation via escalating benefi ts.

Many people fund this annuity when they sell their home. Of course, the downside is that if the person dies shortly after going into nursing care then you will have paid out more for the annuity than the cost of fees. It can seem a little bit of a gamble, but an annuity does provide security in that you know fees are covered for life.

You could try to fund care fees out of regular income – if you have the means to do so. For starters, if you are going into care and have no dependants, then your own property could be rented out and the rent used to offset the fees.

Alternatively, with careful planning you could build an investment portfolio designed to pay an income without taking undue risk. You will need expert help because it is crucial that your capital is protected

to a large degree. Again, just be aware that several years’ fees could quickly add up, so the balance and diversifi cation of assets will have to be just right.

We are all expected to live longer but while that is good news it is likely to mean that more people will need to consider care fees – not just for themselves, but also for their parents. It is an issue that many baby boomers are dealing with at this very moment – and it is an issue that is unlikely to disappear.

Jo’s Jollies - Making an Entrance at Burntstump Country ParkA new arrival at our house, four legged and hopping about like a spring lamb, meet Annie, a companion for Jack (though he thinks he was quite happy without a puppy pulling on his ears wanting to play all the time!). So off we went to meet friends at Burnstump Park in the fi rst of the winter frosts.

Again, this is yet another local park just off the A60 in Papplewick, that we haven’t been to for a while. We followed the signs to the hospital and police headquarters, then saw parking for the country park signs, which meant we were straight out of the car and walking in the woods, very handy with 3 children and 2 dogs.

A nice stroll through the woods and round the cricket pitch brought us to the Burnstump Pub, which was fi lling up by now

with people enjoying a nice Sunday Lunch – Annie decided it was time to make an entrance as she fancied taking a look around the pub and at the Sunday Lunches - and it was quite amusing watching hubby chasing her round the pub! Once Annie and hubby were back in control we moved discreetly outside and sat at one of the picnic benches to enjoy a coffee whilst the children played in the well

equipped outdoor play area, and there was plenty of room for the boys to enjoy a run around with a football and rugby ball.

A further stroll back round the cricket pitch and through the woods took us straight back to the car, a very pleasant couple of hours, topped off I would imagine perfectly in the summer when there is a game of cricket to watch too, well we shall certainly go back with a picnic to take a look.

Film Review: Les MisérablesRelease Date 11th JanuaryAccording to director Tom Hooper, what’s new about his film adaptation of the long-running musical (itself based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel) is that all the singing is live.

Usually actors will go into a studio, record the songs and then mime to them on set. Not this time: the actors performed wearing hidden ear pieces (listening to a live pianist).

What will be the end result? We’re hoping it’s a less stagey, more intimate and immediate drama. Hooper directed ‘The King’s Speech’, which bodes well, and the cast is pretty impressive: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried and Brits Eddie Redmayne and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Anyone need a reminder of the plot ? Jean Valjean (Jackman) is released from prison after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. He finds God, becomes a success, but a copper is out to get him. Everything gets complicated, then the French Revolution arrives. More complications and some waltzing ensue.

Book Review: The Broken ManRelease Date: 31st JanuaryJosephine coxSometimes a damaged child becomes a broken man…

Edward Carter is a bully of a man, who inspires fear in the hearts of all who meet him. Adam Carter is twelve years old, an only child with no friends nor any self confidence. His father’s reign of terror over his family has Adam’s mother Peggy too cowed to protect her son, so Adam’s only support comes in the shape of Jake Wallis, the school bus driver.

Then one afternoon, when Adam is his last drop of the day, Jake makes a life-changing decision – to accompany Adam along the darkening woodland lane to his house. Editor’s InterviewDiane Carter, Editor of The High life continually strives to encourage readers to shop in Mansfi eld and Sutton-in-Ashfi eld and keep investing in our local economy. She stated “On a personal level I made in an aim in 2012 to spend a certain amount on the market stalls which are sadly dwindling. You can fi nd me on a regular basis on a Saturday or Sunday browsing the shops and then enjoying a glass of wine in a local bar or sipping a nice cup of coffee whilst doing some serious people watching”. Diane continued “Mansfi eld and Ashfi eld both offer a variety of High Street stores and small independent shops so there is a whole variety of goods to purchase at great value prices. I recently spent a lovely weekend in Manchester but the stock held in the shops seemed very expensive compared to local stores. My favourite shops are River Island, Primark and TK Max (yes I do sometimes stray outside town). For a great coffee I love Costa but the best tasting coffee is the Cornish Pasty Shop in the market square – great price too and love their pizza slices.Diane interviewed a few other local business owners and residents who also hold a strong loyalty to our towns.

Jennifer Needham, Business Development Manager of Midlands Insurance Services “I nearly always shop locally and take my 3 children into Mansfi eld regularly. I believe it’s important to support your local town and have tried to instil this loyalty in my children as well, despite their love of ‘one-click Amazon’! A typical Shopping trip is kicked off with a visit to the Library, a browse round our favourite shops and then on to a cafe for a cake and a cup of coffee. Shops-wise my eldest child Victoria (pictured) is a real fan of ‘Inspirations’ opposite the Post offi ce who have a great range of things for the Teenager. I’m a department store addict so Beales is always great for a browse, however if you want to venture a little out of town, Atmospheric Interiors off Woodhouse Road are great for curtains, blinds and fancy goods. I lived in Edwinstowe as a child, so Mansfi eld has always been my ‘home town’ and I still love to shop in the Four Seasons. W H Smith (or Linneys as it was known then) was where I yearned for my fi rst pair of roller boots as a child and I can remember my Mum and Dad loving to shop on the market. Today, I feel strong ties here and hope my children will do the same when they grow up. I really do ‘love Mansfi eld’.Shopping done, it’s soon coffee and a cake time and there are some great places to eat, but the whole family votes for the Time Cafe in the Four Seasons Centre who do a lovely ‘Victoria Sponge Muffi n’. Mmmmmm.

Ben Perry, Commercial and Leisure Manager of Pierrepont Estates Management which manages the Thoresby & Kneesall Estates is also an avid ‘localite’ being a big fan of Mansfi eld Town Football Club Ben stated “Living in Mansfi eld and with a young family, Mansfi eld Town Centre and surrounding shops and facilities give us everything we need with shops, restaurants, parks and leisure facilities and most importantly baby groups easily accessible. The town is also close to fantastic recreational locations in Thorsby Park (had to get that in!), Sherwood Forest, Rufford Park and Sherwood Pines. My big shout outs go to the Mint Restaurant, Oriental Delight Chinese

take-away on Carter Lane, Millers Barber Shop on Nottingham Road and the Pea and Fish stall in Mansfi eld Market Place; all of which provide consistently brilliant food and services and are thoroughly recommended.

I am of course a fan of Mansfi eld Town Football Club and have supported them for nearly 20 years. As a season ticket holder I attend virtually every home game and get to as many away matches as my family life permits. I would encourage people of Mansfi eld & Ashfi eld to support the club as a successful local team really does help raise the profi le of a town and encourage new investment.

Wine ReviewLA PETITE GASCONNE - Vin de Pays des Cotes de Gasconne, Gascony, South West France

Introduction: La Petite Gasconne is an off-dry white wine. Pale lemon in colour, with fresh citrus notes and white fl owers. On tasting this wine, the palate shows round, supple fruit while hitting the all-important balance between sweetness and acidity.

La Petite Gasconne is produced in Gascony, in an area with a rich wine growing history, that at one time fell into decline. This was reversed by André Dubosc, a local man determined to reinvigorate the area and restore its wine reputation. He brought together a group of like-minded winegrowers and founded the Producteurs Plaimont in 1979. Their quality-focused approach melds respect for tradition and innovation: ancient grape varieties have been resurrected and old vineyards have been restored, divided

into plots and worked individually to optimize quality. Gascony’s wine culture is now thriving - the countryside is carpeted with vines once more and Plaimont enjoys an international reputation for its high quality, characterful wines. The Petite Gasconne vineyards are located in the Gers, a sub-region of Gascony, South-West France and different vineyard plots are harvested and vinifi ed separately, to offer character and complexity.

The grapes used in this wine are Colombard (50%) and Ugni Blanc (50%). The grapes are ripened slowly and gently – the true key to quality wine production. As the fi ning is done with vegetable protein, this wine is suitable for the strictest vegetarians and vegans.

We have selected this wine as our white house wine as it is available to all our customers, including vegetarians!! It is a lovely, easy to drink wine, that pleases most palates- neither too dry nor too sweet – great for sharing with friends over this wonderful Christmas Time!!

Mansfi eld Mayor Offi cially Opens the Refurbished Manor Restaurant & HotelA celebratory launch of the Mansfi eld Manor, formerly The Portland Hotel took place on the evening of the 26th November.

New owners; Paul Andrews and Diane Doran offered a warm welcome and a delicious dinner to friends and colleagues who had assisted them with the development of their major £200,000 refurbishment of all areas of the hotel including the lounge, bar, dining area and bedrooms.

Mansfi eld Mayor; Tony Egginton, raised a glass to the couple and along with the guests wished them well with the future of their business.

Paul Andrews said: “It’s going to be a professionally-run hotel; we want to make it a real centrepiece for Mansfi eld. We saw a fabulous potential for the Manor that has not been utilised and we are going to put everything into this. We have received overwhelming support from the council and neighbours and are really excited”.

Paul continued “Christmas and New Year bookings are fl ooding in and they are our fi rst challenge. The restaurant opened offi cially in the beginning of December and is serving Sunday lunches and ‘winter warmers’ throughout the week. The bar area is also open and is the ideal place to meet friends and business colleagues with free wi-fi and a fabulous view over Carr Bank Park”

The High Life wishes Paul and Diane well with their new venture.

POEMAs hope springs with newness

I am grasping moments as though

They were feathers fl oating

In a fi nely formed room

Feeling their lightness

Transforming now into

Little bright lights

As intense and beautiful

As souls packed densely

With meanings. A journey

Unfolds itself gently

Before me, a future

I can mould and choose

To be. Meetings of minds

Are happening here

Encouraging something joyful

Slipping into a new year.

Waxwings imagesJanuary Photo EntryWaxwings across Sherwood! After a poor berry crop in Scandinavia fl ocks of waxwings descended on the UK by the 1000,s to feast on berries such as Rowan in our gardens. Flocks of 100 - 300 are not uncommon and the birds will strip a tree of fruit in a matter of days.
