Each competition allowed Jamario to take classroom learning to the next level.

THE ART OF PUBLIC SPEAKINGNo matter what program a student select at OHP, public speaking is still one of the top skills potential employers and recruiters look for in a candidate. Jamario had the opportunity to take part in competitions his first year at Hi-Point. “The speaking extemporaneous competition was incredibly beneficial in learning how to think on your feet and speak in a logical and clear manner right on the spot. After I got my topic assignment, I had five minutes to prepare a speech to present to the judges. It was a very good experience.”

SEEING RESULTSAfter competing in the speaking competition, Jamario earned a silver medal at the regional competition and then placed 5th in the state. Jamario is taking last years results to motivate him for the upcoming year. “Since last year was my first year, I know a little more of what to expect. I’m going to get it this year; I’d like to win. I know I can do it, and it’d be really exciting to walk away with a gold medal.”

Well-Rounded EducationTaking part in the competitions, even those not directly correlated with his lab, have helped Jamario succeed in his studies at Hi-Point. “I would definitely tell other students to explore the options here. There are so many organizations you can be a part of and grow personally and professionally. It’s well worth it to have experience is every aspect of the educational and career technical realm.”

Our teachers are some of the best in the profession. Our career-technical instructors combine their years of practical work experience in their discipline with strong classroom preparation to create a 21st Century learning environment, one that combines technology, practical laboratory projects and strong critical thinking assignments. Combine their expertise with our academic instructors and our students receive a truly well-rounded learning experience that prepares them for college, career and life.

TALENT SHOWCASENo matter what career-technical program is chosen, students always are equipped with the opportunity to showcase their unique talents.

21st CENTURY TECHNOLOGYOhio Hi-Point is one of the few school districts in Ohio to provide laptops for each and every one of its students at a minimal fee. The laptops coupled with our WiFi campus in Bellefontaine enable students to engage in the latest technology to prepare them for a global workforce. Teachers integrate technology into their classroom experiences, many not even using textbooks.

PRACTICAL LEARNINGOur Health Technology students go into the field during their clinical field experiences, while our Culinary Arts students run their own restaurant, the Sloan Inn. Our Professional Turf & Landscaping students are busy maintaining the school’s campus, while students in the Supply Chain Management program at Urbana High School are busy planning, managing and marketing Hi-Point’s Alumni & Friends online apparel store. The practical learning experiences go on and on and make for the most well-rounded educational experience you can receive while in high school.

BE WHO YOU AREOur students are expected to look the part of the profession during the school day, but each student is allowed the freedom to be who they are. It’s that feeling of acceptance and belonging that makes Hi-Point become a second home to so many of our students.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS“When I first came to Hi-Point I didn’t know what to expect. I thought that I would just try it out and learn a new skill. The challenge was that I didn’t know what skills I wanted to learn. I switched my program three times before deciding on Information Technology. There were so many opportunities to become involved and gain skills not only professionally but also personally. “

WHY OHIO HI-POINT“Ohio HI-Point was a fantastic stepping stone between high school and college. You are working specifically for job training and those skills make you more marketable to employers and internship coordinators. Ohio Hi-Point does a great job by molding the classroom with the lab so it’s more of an engaging atmosphere and it’s exciting to be able to apply classroom knowledge to the real world.”

ALL WORTH IT“There’s a variety of skills that you can learn while at OHP. I leaned valuable business skills through BPA and through the marketing department at OHP as an intern. I also developed a highly marketable knowledge of websites and I’ve been able to do some freelance work. These are the skills you know for life and you have something on your resume that not many high school students can say they have. You just have to apply yourself, you’ll be amazed with how much you can gain from Hi-Point”

LET’S TALK COLLEGEShelby earned 39 college credits to transfer to Ohio State University Lima Branch. “Ohio Hi-Point makes sure you’re aware of the higher education options out there. I knew how to get college credit and request my transcript. We were encouraged to check out events that highlight different universities and I was able to talk to someone in person. The universities are well represented on campus and we have

a great relationship with them.

helby Shafer is a 2011 graduate of the Information Technology program. As a previous member of the Journeys bloggers, Business Professionals of America (BPA) and Lead Ambassadors, she worked closely with the marketing and promotional efforts for OHP. LEADERSHIP BUILDINGStudents at Ohio Hi-Point are constantly training for leadership roles through the various opportunities OHP offers them. Students dive into in clubs, activities, and projects that sharpen their public speaking, teamwork and innovative thinking skills. When students leave Hi-Point, they walk away as a more developed and confident leader.

STAYING INVOLVEDOhio Hi-Point works with students from 14 partner schools across five counties encourages all students to remain active within their home school. Whether you love music, sports, or an academic extra-curricular, OHP wants you to continue to shine in your home schools activities.

DO YOUR OWN THINGOhio Hi-Point wants to aid you in customizing your education. Each student completes coursework that is relevant to their future career in order to make education more exciting and to prepare them for the work force. During the course of their Senior year, students develop and create a project that is unique, but relevant, to their chosen lab to showcase the skills they’ve acquired while at OHP.

DYNAMIC CAMPUSESThe Bellefontaine Campus, which is located in the middle of our five county district, houses most of our high school programs. It is also the site of the highest point in Ohio, Campbell Hill; just over 1,500 feet above sea level. The Bellefontaine Campus has a collegiate atmosphere with multiple buildings holding classes, outdoor study areas and gardens, and an area called “the commons” where students can relax and take advantage of the school’s wireless technology on their laptops.

HISTORIC SITEThe Bellefontaine Campus is a former Air Force Base where the 664th Radar Squadron was stationed during the Cold War. Many of the on-campus buildings are the original base buildings. Additionally, a display case in the high school holds memorabilia from the 664th Radar Squadron.

TAKING A DIFFERENT ROUTE“I started at Ohio Hi-Point by taking a half-day and juggling sports. This year I wanted to become more involved so I’m going for a full day. I’m definitely busy, but I just tackle each thing as it comes my way. OHP is extremely flexible and wants us to be involved with our home school and still be highly active within the labs and organizations,”

WORDS OF WISDOM“Don’t overwhelm yourself. Relax and tackle one thing at a time. If you stress, you won’t be able to enjoy the great opportunities OHP or your home school has to offer.”

ierra Cronkleton wanted the best of both worlds. An active Benjamin Logan Raider, Sierra participates in the track and softball programs while still creating an impact at OHP as a Health Technology student and Lead Ambassador. She participated in multiple competitions and was part of Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) that received most outstanding chapter in the state. She also juggles a part-time job.

S

FINDING A BALANCE“The first year I came to Ohio Hi-Point I didn’t play any sports. I wanted to find out if I could handle the rigorous course material at OHP and still be organized enough to take on sports at my home school. OHP wants us to be involved in our home schools so taking on sports and classes at OHP was something I was able to balance.”

WORDS OF WISDOM“Stay organized and do your work. You will be busy, but staying on top of tasks and projects is going to help in you in the long run. Teachers want you to take advantages of opportunities, but you need to still do your work.”

ommie Bray, an Automotive Technology senior, is constantly on the move. She finds the perfect blend of balance from her home school, Riverside, and Ohio Hi-Point to keep her active and engaged in activities.

At Ohio Hi-Point, Tommie is a Lead Ambassador, a Journeys Blogger and is president of the Auto Technology program, and participates in softball and cheerleading at Riverside. She also holds a part-time job.

Sophomore year is the time to begin thinking of your future. College? Career? Life? Big decisions await. While that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your youth, you should begin to think about what you want your future to look like. Why not consider allowing Ohio Hi-Point Career Center to make it a little easier by taking advantage of our college and career preparation during your junior and senior years of high school?

SET YOUR PATHHave a specific goal in mind, but want to talk with someone about it first. Our Recruitment Coordinator is here to help. Email her at [email protected] to ask her your questions.

THE ‘REAL WORLD’Job Placement Students are assisted in finding jobs in their field of study by OHP’s Placement Coordinator. OHP’s placement rate in 2010 was 87%, which included placement in full-time employment, higher education, and the military.

School-To-Work Program Students who meet grade point average and attendance requirements may be eligible for early placement following their first year at OHP. Students can complete summer internships and be released from school to work in their field of study during the senior year. This program allows students to earn graduation credits while being paid a salary and gaining a valuable on-the-job experience.

Business, Industry, & Labor Partnerships Partners from business, industry, and labor are actively involved in programs in many ways. They guide curriculum development, provide classroom demonstrations, judge local skill events, provide internship sites for students, and serve as mentors.

Alumni & Friends Association OHP’s Alumni & Friends Association, established in 2008, is a way for our students to connect with potential employers and other friends of OHP. A career network is available to all current and former students and OHP’s business and community partners.

Here’s how we can set you on the right path:

Page 13: The Hi-Point Journeys Guidebook

FROM THE BEGINNING“I became interested in Ohio Hi-Point when I went on an eight grade tour and I thought it was a good choice to make. It was an extremely easy process to become enrolled. My guidance counselor was a great help and we filled out the information together and sent it to OHP. Adjusting to Ohio Hi-Point was a little bit different just because you don’t know anybody, but that changes quickly and you have ample time to get know people and know the faces around you.”

LEARNING THE ROPES“The juniors will always come in before the seniors, which gives them a few days to soak everything in and get to know the other juniors before the seniors come to school. There’s always some sort of games or fun ways that OHP helps you feel comfortable during your first few days. You gain so many friends throughout your two years here -it’s pretty amazing. ”

GREAT TEACHERS“The teachers are great. They are always willing to work with you and make sure you understand the concept of an idea and then how to apply that idea in real situations and do the skills above par. They teach you more than just professional skills but also personal skills such as teamwork and leadership.

You’re able to be highly involved at Ohio Hi-Point. They want you to learn so a lot of students go on field trips and college visits, and we get to work with partnership schools to talk about OHP. Which I think is pretty cool.”

Bittersweet Ending“I loved Ohio Hi-Point. It was a great couple of years and the memories I made were some of the best. I think anyone who comes to Hi-Point and graduates will have the same experience. Graduating is exciting, but it’s sad to leave.”

ylan Booth wants to make a difference. He has aspirations of becoming an EMT and working in Flight Care. Before graduating from the Health Technology Program in 2011, he was heavily involved in OHP as a Journeys Blogger, Lead Ambassador and a member of Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). Dylan is attending Clark State Community College and plans on transferring to The Ohio State University.
