It is a time to give thanks both for the Harvest and for the year that is gone. Advent which starts on 30th November , marks the start of the new church year and is a good time for reflection and thanksgiving too. The danger in saying thank you to people specifically is that you miss someone out. There are so many people who contribute to the life of the church and a wide variety of ways – those who attend and worship together week by week and month by month. Those who look after the day to day business of church – preparing for services, making teas and providing hospitality, cleaning church, arranging flowers, gardening, ringing bells, playing the organ, welcoming folk. Then there are those who con- tribute financially to church, either regularly or occasionally; those who look after business and serve on church councils and committees; those who share information by word of mouth or through this magazine; and those who organise fund raising events and put in hours of preparation and hard work. There are those who take care of one another, noticing when someone is not around and checking up to see if they are ok, those who support one another, offer lifts, go visiting, sometimes done in the name of the church, but often just because you are kind and good people. Then there are those of you who pray, for one another, for our communities, for the world at large. To all who contribute to the life of the church, taking part in the work of the Kingdom of God, I want to say thank you for all that you do, and give, and are. It is all of us together who make church what it is, each contribution is of value to the rest of us, and to God. For every kind word spoken, every fleeting thought pray- er, every encouragement given - thank you one and all. Its also a time, as we approach Christmas and we remember the greatest gift of all, as God comes him- self in the person of Jesus to show us how much he loves us, to give him thanks and offer him our love. There is a bible verse that is used both at weddings and in church services as we share the peace of God God is love, and those who live in love, live in God, and God lives in them.In other words, all love comes from God and we love one another because God loved us first. Let us celebrate love this Christmas season, the love that God gives to us and which we share with one another. Thanks be to God who shows his love for us in Jesus, may his love and peace be yours this Christmas time. from Liz with a thankful heart have a wonderful Christmas.

Isabel Cartwright-Foster, age 11.'Before the summer holidays, year 6 at Arnesby School were asked if they would like to design a poster or mascot for the 'Open the book' team. This needed to include a smiley face symbol and the theme had to be good news. I remember when I was in the infants hearing about Noah's ark, when Noah let free some birds to find land, eventually a dove returned to the ark carrying an olive branch in its beak, this was excellent news for Noah and his family because it meant that the flood water was subsid-ing. At about the same time a rainbow had appeared in the sky, which was God's sign to say that he will never again flood the earth and destroy all living things. This was amazing for the whole world and the rest of hu-manity. On my Banner I put the flood waters, a rainbow, a smiley sun and a dove carrying not an olive branch but a note bearing the words 'Good News'. I hope the 'Open the Book' team will understand the meaning of my banner, because even when things seem really bad there are always good things ahead.

A PRAYER FOR SIERRA LEONE Though what is past may be full of loss, and the present insecure, never shall despair take away our future. Give us seeds of hope, O God, and we will clear the ground, plant and weed and work and laugh, our harvest safe in your hands. (J Morley, H Ward, J Wild, 2000)

Carol Service and December Raffle The Carol Service takes place at 6pm on Sunday 14 th December and everyone is most welcome. After the service, we gather at the Plough Inn for mince pies and the raffle draw. The Christmas raffle is in support of church funds. The five yearly church inspection was carried out recently and this identified that we need some urgent work carried out to the guttering, roof timber and stonework. Indicative costs are in the region of £10,000 and therefore we would very much appreciate your support in buying and selling tickets. We look forward to seeing you on the 14th

Promises Auction We plan to hold a Promises Auction sometime in the new year. It is some years since we have held one and I am currently in the process of collecting promises. More details of the event will be publicised nearer the time once we have set a date but I would be very grateful if you are able to offer a promise – it would be great to obtain at least one from each household in the village. I am looking for a broad range of things to auction and no offer is too small. Ideas include homemade cakes, house cleaning, ironing, car cleaning, gardening, babysitting, dog walking, holiday home lets, taxi rides, sports and entertainment tickets, family days out, free range eggs, face paint-ing, restaurant meals, homemade meals, chocolates – the list is endless!

I apologise for encroaching on your page Bruntingthorpe on this one occasion. This is due to the need to publicise two months services

Many of you will have heard by now that All Saints Church Husbands Bosworth has suffered the theft of lead from the north aisle roof. Despite the fact that on Saturday morning the roof was leaking like a sieve, the next day we held our Remembrance Service without it interfering with our worship. I would like to say a personal thank you to all those who have rallied round in order to ensure that the life of the church continues, even in the face of adversity. Thank you to those who are dealing with officials, the church wardens, PCC, those who have loaned ladders, or taken pictures, and those who have made contributions towards the cost of the repairs, which will not be fully covered by the insurers. Thank you too, to those who spotted something going on at the time and notified the police. Obviously we are at the start of a journey towards the roof being repaired, and it will take some time for the necessary processes and procedures to be worked through and the funds to be raised, but in the meantime, it is business as usual for the life of the church. The bible tells us that ‘all things work together for good for those who love God’ Rom 8:28 – lets watch and see what good God will bring out of this adversity as we remain faithful to him. Liz
