Page 1 The Heritage Heartbeat February 2017 The Heritage Heartbeat Painting News for Members of Palomar Heritage Painters Vol 34, Issue 2, February 2017 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greetings PHP Membership: January has come and gone in a blink of the eye, but what a “blink” it was. Ramona’s beautiful Blue Heron piece started the year off great; it gave the audience practice with a monochro- matic palette, which produces truly exquisite art. Thank you Ramona for your patience and great teaching style, it was a won- derful day. I held my first board meeting to discuss and approve our 2017 budget, not many changes, look for the updated budget coming soon. I will hold the first General meeting before class starts in February, remember it is the first Saturday, February 4th. I feel it is important to keep the day moving since it is also the Ways and Means drawings. So if you are painting or would like to come by, I will start the meeting at 9:00 and it will last about 10 minutes. If you have questions that need to be addressed or some ideas you feel should be introduced, please let me know. As you know, raffles are our primary funding source and it is one of the biggest jobs. Last month I announced the idea of members getting together with friends and taking a month they are planning to paint in and provide several raffle items. Mindy and Marilyn provided nice gifts in January, thank you so much. If anyone would like to volunteer for any months after March, let me know. Remember, you get reimbursed! Don’t forget to sign up for Mystery Paint In the second Saturday in March, there is always so much going on. It will be a fun pro- ject and great day. Space is running out. I also found out the official start year our chapter began. There was some conjecture when that may have been, according to SDP, we became a chapter in 1985, so I guess we missed our 30 th anniversary. Oh well, we’ll just have to have a belated par- ty. April 8, 2017 “Cock-A-Doodle-Do” taught by Carol Ganzi Those signed up and paid are: Linda Silvasy, Kenna Perrin, Neva Anderson, Virginia Davies and Marilyn Dixon. **Carol has sent the following information via email regarding the class.***

For those who may not want to purchase or use color pencils, she will bring paint so that the yellow and red can be floated in. She does recommend that you still bring a white or the cloud blue; those spaces are pretty small and easier to get to with a pencil. Everyone should also bring a soft graphite pencil. The surface - the most common brand of the “artists boards” is MONA LISA/SPEEDBALL. She usually gets hers at Michaels. How-ever, the 12x12 size is rarely in stock. She likes them because they are already coated with white gesso and are ready to go. She has found them at Dick Blick (www.dickblick.com) Item #13612-1212 Studio Flat Panel 12x12 about $7.50 Item #13618-1212 Studio Flat Panel 12x12 $32.45 for a dozen ($2.71 each) Any 12x12 Masonite or wood panel will work but will need to be base painted white before adding the background colors. You can also use an actual canvas but she finds the tangling and penciling more difficult on canvas because it has no back support.

Raspberry-Cream Cheese Coffee Cake (Charlotte Hicks) Ingredients: Filling: Coffee Cake: 4 oz cream cheese, softened 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pan

2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 egg white ½ teaspoon table salt Streusel: 1 cup sour cream ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ¼ cup granulated sugar 1 cup granulated sugar ¼ cup packed light brown sugar ½ cup unsalted butter 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 large eggs ¼ teaspoon table salt 10 teaspoons raspberry preserves 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 2/3 cup slivered almonds Yield: Serves 10 (serving size: 1 slice) Preparations:

Prepare the Filling. Combine cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, and egg white in a bowl, beat with an electric mixer until smooth.

Prepare the Streusel: Combine flour, sugars, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl, stirring well with a whisk. Add melted butter, stirring until mixture is crumbly. Stir in almonds.

Prepare the Coffee Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Flour a lightly-greased 9-inch springform pan. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Combine sour cream and vanilla in a small bowl. Place sugar and butter in a mixing bowl; beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until well combined. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add flour mixture alternately with sour cream mixture in 5 additions, beginning and ending with flour mixture.

Transfer batter to prepared pan, smooth top. Dollop teaspoonfuls of Filling and raspberry preserves over batter; sprinkle evenly with Streusel. Bake in a preheated oven until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 50 to 55 minutes. Cool in pan about 10 minutes. Run a knife around edge of pan, remove sides of pan. Serve cake warm or at room temperature.

www.myrecipes.com ***Note: Be sure to use raspberry preserves, because jam or jelly will sink to the bottom of the pan during baking.

Chicken Taco Casserole (Charlotte Hicks) Ingredients: 1 (10 oz) bag tortilla chips 2 (10.75 oz) cans cream of chicken soup 1 1/2 cups sour cream 1 (14 oz) can diced tomatoes and green chilis (Ro-Tel) 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained 1 (1 oz) packet taco seasoning 3 cups chicken, cooked and shredded 2 cups cheddar cheese Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9 x 13- inch pan. In a large bowl, combine the chicken soup, sour cream, diced tomatoes (Ro-Tel), black beans, taco seasoning, and chicken. Set aside. Crush chips (just crush them with your hands) and spread half of them on the bot-tom of the pan. Spread half of the chicken mixture over the tortilla chips. Top with 1 cup of cheese. Repeat layers. Bake for 30 minutes, until bubbly and cheese is starting to brown. Recipe from: www.sixsistersstuff.com

It’s not too soon to start planning and painting fabulous pieces to submit to the Home and Hobby division at the 2017 San Diego County Fair (June 2-July 4th). This year’s theme will be “all about the wild west, in-cluding historical aspects with a western twist.” There are plans for square dancing, ho downs, quilters, blacksmiths, leather smiths and more.
