NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs)

Mystery Solved! ‘Mystery Paint In’ welcomed in the ‘2018 Chinese New Year’. With a maximum number of seats sold, our members learned how to paint with gleaming metallic powders. Our mystery teacher “Carol Ganzi” taught us Chinoiserie. We were given 6 powders (colored coded and numbered with coordinating straws) placed in a custom-made cubby holder. Mixing the powders with Deco Art Satin Varnish (as our medium) we painted on a Scalloped Treasure Box. The theme of the event was evident throughout the room decorated in red with Chinese lantern décor overhead. The day included marvelous raffle prizes, an awesome project and a delicious lunch. Thanks Leslie and her team for your hard work because everyone had a great time. April 14 class: Harvest Witch on Moon Get a head start on Halloween and paint with Bobbie ‘the Queen of Halloween”. Always a fun time learning so much

about design and color theory. Jo Sonja Background color is Azure. Other mediums suggested to bring on the project sheet are Jo Sonja Kleister medium, Clear Glaze, Retarder and All Purpose sealer. Brushes are #8 - 10 Filbert, #2 -4 Round #00 Liner, ½” Flat used for prep. Project sheets available. May 12 Class: Peacock Bank Bag Gain some experience painting on a vinyl bag, if you choose this surface. Vinyl bank bags can be ordered on-line. We found some in multiple colors at www.bankbags.co or blue bags were readily available at Office Depot. Supplies re-quested for the class: Wet palette, small stencil brush, your favorite Splatter brush, #1 liner 3 round 2-6 Filbert, 4-6 Flat. Project sheets available.

June 9th Class: Fall Harvest Did someone say Fall? But it’s not summer yet! It’s never too late to get a head start on the next season because it will be here before you know it. Donna is ready to guide you through painting a pumpkin with sunflowers. This pat-tern can be adapted to several surfaces (canvas, wood etc.) and will look stunning in your home during the holidays.

July 14th Class: Feeling Froggy We have heard from Lori and although her class is several months away we will have the original Feeling Froggy project and kits on display for you to see up close starting at the April class. The kits available for purchase (separate from the class fee) will be

$20 which includes the 8” x 15” surface, all the pieces, thermometer and the key. Payment for the kit is by cash or check payable to Lori Holstead. Project kit available.

Those born in the month of April can be described as brave, outgoing and firm. Friendships mean a lot to them and they are keen to solve other people’s problems. They are attractive and affectionate people and are very encouraging at the same time. However, they can be revengeful when people or circumstances turn against them. They are equally pleasant and vicious and can be generous, as well as aggressive. However, they are some of the best people to be around. They are exactly the ones you can look up to when faced with difficul-ties. Individuals born in this month are controlled by the dual forces of the zodiac sign, Aries and the planet of Mars. Known as the ‘The Lord of War’, the planet Mars makes the people under its influence, impatient and destructive. These individuals are born leaders and are usually attracted to sports, engineering and the military services as career choices. They are always active and charged, the quality very few people possess and even if they do, not to such a degree. They must try to control their emotions and need to learn to be patient. The Aries/Taurus cusp, which happens to be the most powerful cusp, also falls in the month of April. Referred to as the ‘cusp of power’, people born under its influence are not the ones you would like to engage in fight with! Not only are they impulsive, but also tend to fight for themselves with a great deal of aggression. Their spirit and ener-gy cannot be tamed at any cost and they are severely repulsive to authority. Whew! Their strength of character does not permit them to bow down and they find it difficult to accept defeat. Such people can be quarrelsome at times and need to be dealt with patience. Howev-er, they are dependable and therefore, are natural leaders who are capable of taking responsibilities. Most of them lead a happy and prosperous life, owing to their strong determination, which helps them succeed in whatever they do. Famous people born in April are Loren Gray, Logan Paul, Hayden Summerall and Tessa Brooks. Never heard of ‘em? Me neither! But I have heard of Washington Irving, Maya Angelou, Booker T. Wash-ington, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, John Muir, Har-per Lee. And let’s not forget Carol Burnett, Jackie Chan, William Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, Queen Elizabeth II, Barbara Strei-sand, Betty Davis (the song “Betty Davis Eyes” always comes to my mind). Then there’s Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Jefferson, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Debbie Reynolds and Roy Orbison. Some days in April to be celebrated are Easter and April Fool’s Day which both fall on April 1 this year. This is followed by Dyngus Day, always the Monday after Easter, a fun Polish Holiday. Then on April 6 is New Beer’s Eve with National Beer Day and No Housework Day falling on April 7. Who wants to clean house after all that beer drink-ing? April 13 is Blame Someone Else Day (or the dog ate my home-work day). Earth Day is April 22, Arbor Day is April 27 and Interna-tional Dance Day is April 29. PHP members celebrating April birthdays are Linda Howard, April 1; Mary Weflen, April 7; Anita Lane, April 12; Karen Ortman, April 17; Debi Stivers, April 28 and Jean Cooke, April 29.

April Birthdays

Thanks!

I would like to thank my committee for all the

hard work they did to make Mystery Paint-In happen.

Marilyn and Ramona did a fabu-lous job putting together Raffle Baskets. Linda Silvasy donated several lovely items to the Raffle, including the desk which she paint-ed herself. Marilyn was in charge of getting breakfast and lunch served — and for lots of advice along the way! Carolyn Miller, basecoated surfaces, traced pat-terns, and put together our goodie bags. Her daughter, Colleen (age 5), helped very cheerfully by put-ting stickers on the powder pots and on the goodie bags, and also collating the colored straws. Carol Ganzi did a wonderful job teaching the class and making sure that eve-ryone finished the project. She also coordinated the paint donation by DecoArt, which was very much appreciated. Lastly, I’d like to thank each of the members who attended and brought lots of joy

& laughter to this event and and who also bought lots of Raffle tickets!!

San Diego County Fair 2018- How Sweet It Is

Hi Ladies. It’s time to start thinking about entering some of your fabulous painted pieces into the Home and Hobby division competitive exhibits at this year’s fair. Look through your stash, your UFO’s, or even on top of your kitchen table for something to enter. Your work only needs to have been completed in the last three years. Here’s the scoop on how to enter: You must register your pieces ONLINE by 11:59 pm on Friday, May 11, 2018 and pay a small fee. Go

to www.sdfair.com/entry to enter. The day to deliver your entries to the fairgrounds is Friday, May 18th, from Noon-7:00 pm. We might

be able to help deliver your pieces for you this year. Please let me know ahead of time if you might need help with this.

You can win ribbons, dollars, sponsored awards, and all of your friends will come to see your painted pieces. We did a great job of increasing the number of submissions last year and would like to have an even bigger showing this year. So, go. Look through your stuff. Add those finishing touches and a spray of varnish and your submissions will be good to go. See you at the Fair, Charlotte Hicks ([email protected])
