“Nobili” is the ancient motto displayed on theinsignia of our noble and illustrious Order ofSt. Joachim. Nobility (Nobilitas as said inancient times) is now - along with ranks andtitles - usually considered a rare and even aslightly unfashionable term.

But our contemporary society and the worldin general needs nobility of heart and spiritmore than ever, and I hope that the manyknights and dames who proudly wear theinsignia of our Order may attain this humani-tarian and philosophical goal in their dailylives and activities.

May our patron Saint Joachim, as "goodShepherd" bless all of those who serve oursick, disabled, needy and homeless brothersand sisters. To all of our members I want toexpress my best greetings and all good wisheson the occasion of this, the 250th anniversaryof the founding of our illustrious Order.

Message From the Grand Master

The Nelson HatchmentIn the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Merton,UK, one finds an unexpected reference to TheOrder of Saint Joachim. Among St Mary’s col-lection of funereal hatchments is that ofAdmiral Lord Nelson, located above the doortowards the end of the North Aisle. Nelsonmade his home in Merton and attended StMary.

On it are depicted the symbols of the fourchivalric orders conferred on Nelson, includ-ing, suspendedfrom a greenribbon, at thebottom right, afamiliar whitecross describedas the “Order ofSt Joachim ofLeiningen”.

It is with deep sadness that the Grand Master and Grand Chapter of The Order of Saint Joachimannounces the death of our Order's Coadjutor, His Excellency The Chevalier Alexander SixtusBaron von Reden, on December 15, 2004, after a lengthy illness.

Baron von Reden was born on 1 May 1952 in Vienna. He was the youngest son of Korvetten-Kapitan Gunther Freiherr von Reden, and Luise Maria. The family originated in Lower Saxony, andcan be traced to Heinrich Hysce (1189-1225). Baron von Reden spent his childhood in the upper-Austrian family seat of Regau, later graduating from the Academy of Graphic Arts.

Baron von Reden won the 1974 Biennale prize in Crakow, the 1975 Austrian state prize fortourism advertisement, the gold medal of the Italian Academy of the Arts, as well as the SilverMedal of Honour of the city of Vienna. Authorized by the Grand Chancellor, the spe-cial 250th Anniversary Cross commemoratingthe founding of The Order of Saint Joachim in1755 will be available to our members inSeptember 2005.

The design of the commemorative cross haschanged slightly since it was first announcedlast year. The new design is similar but sim-pler, and more in keeping with the design ofour Order’s original knights’ insignia asshown in A.M. Perrot’s 1821 classic book, AHistorical Collection of all the Knightly Orders ofDifferent Nations. The original gold and whiteenamel cross has a laurel wreath with greencross pattee, taken from the reverse of the orig-inal cross.

The ribbon is green, being the traditionalcolour of our Order, taken from both thecolour associated with St. Joachim and theheraldic colour of the noble house of Sachsen-Coburg Saalfeld, to which our first GrandMaster belonged. The ribbon has three stripes- two white representing 100 years each, and acentral green stripe for 50 years, for a total of250 years.

The 250th anniversary cross is available as aminiature only, and is authorized for wearwhen in formal attire on a ribbon bar next tothe current miniature Knight Expectant’sinsignia of the Order.

The 250th anniversary cross will be availablebeginning in September, 2005. All members ofThe Order of Saint Joachim who hold the rankof Knight Expectant and above are eligible forthis award, provided they are current in pay-ing their oblations to Grand Chapter.

Considering themselves “knightly militia”, itis not surprising that most orders of knight-hood adopted military dress. Many modernorders have either continued or maintainedthis tradition of wearing a uniform for cere-monial or formal occasions.

When first constituted as The Order of Jonathan,Defenders of the Divine Providence, the first reg-ulations of our Order set out the uniform. TheStatutes of the Divine Providence, published in1756 following the election of our first GrandMaster, describe the very elaborate uniform ofthe Order:

“For Commanders of the Grand Cross, a celestialblue uniform, their chest, collar and cuffs the colourof fire. Epaulettes of silver and a hat with a whitefeather, a cloak also of celestial blue...”

It is not known whether the “celestial blue”referred to in the French version ofthe document is a light or dark blue,as both were in common use at thetime.

By the time Sir Levett Hanson, theOrder’s Vice Chancellor, was writ-ing his history of the Order of SaintJoachim (1803), the uniform hadchanged:

“The Uniform worn by the GrandMaster, consists of a Waist coat andsmall cloaths of superfine whitecloth; the coat is of superfine Scarletcloth, lined with white; the cuffs andcollar, are of dark, green Velvet; thebuttons are white; and thereupon, agreen cross pattée is engraved, according to the rules of Blazonry.

“The coat is distinguished with twosilver Epaulettes embroidered, andadorned with a green cross pattée.The Grand Master has four suchcrosses, upon each Epaulette; the

Grand Commanders, three; the Commanders, two, and the Knights, one. The Sword is deco-rated with a Knot of green and Silver. TheGrand Master wears his Hat bordered with apoint D'Espagne of Silver, and adorned with awhite Feather. During the Assembly of thegeneral Chapter, and on all days of Solemnity, the Grand Master, the principal Members ofthe Chapter, and such Knights as then resideat the Court of the Grand Master, appear inBoots and Spurs, and carry a Cane, à laMillitaire; and, in their Hats, which are plain, they wear a green Cockade, and likewise anAigrette, or plume of green and whiteFeathers.”

The wearing of the uniform was an importantpart of life at the “court” of the Grand Master.Hanson continues:

“When at the Residence of theGrand Master, all the Knightsare obliged to appear constantlywith the Uniform; and eachKnight, wheresoever he may be,is in duty bound to wear it asmuch as possible. Nevertheless, all who appertain to the ecclesi-astical body; and those who arestill attached to the militaryService; are exempted from suchregulation.”

The donning of the Order’s uni-form was an important part ofthe Ceremony of Admission ofnew Postulants or KnightsExpectant. During the course ofthe ceremony the candidate firstwatches as the Order’s officersassemble and the Grand Mastergives a speech regarding theduties of a member of the Order. He is then led out of the recep-tion hall by the Master of the

Ceremonies, whoagain reminds him ofthe duties he under-takes as a member ofthe Order, and thendresses him in the uni-form of the Order toreturn and take hisoath and complete theceremony.

The putting on of theuniform is highly sym-bolic of the Postulant’sentering into a new lifeas part of a fraternitybound together byoath. Taken to its reli-gious extreme, it can beseen as a “rebirth”within the society ofthe Order.

Indeed, the importanceand significance of theOrder’s uniform wassuch that on their

death, members of The Order of Saint Joachimwere required to be buried in it.

Sometime in the 19th century the uniform ofthe Order fell into disuse.

While our Order no longer considers itself a“military” order, there is some merit to reviv-ing the uniform in a modernized style for for-mal and ceremonial occasions, such as theCeremony of Admittance and Advancement,Grand Chapter, and events with other Orders.

The closest equivalent modern uniform thatapproximates the traditional colours describedby Hanson is a modified version of British andCanadian military mess dress or “kit”. A shortscarlet jacket, lined in white with white lapelsor vest and green open or closed collar is inkeeping with Hanson’s description, with sil-ver epaulettes and buttons with the Order’sgreen cross.

If one could be produced for a reasonable cost, the revival of the Order’s uniform could pro-vide our members with a visible sense of iden-tity and a welcome link with our rich andcolourful history.

Two modern interpretations of the ancient uniform of The Order of Saint Joachim described by Hanson andadapted in a form similar to modern UK military “mess kit”. The short jacket is scarlet with a dark green collar, with either lapels or vest of white. The silver epaulettes bear crosses in accordance with rank, and the buttonsare silver with green cross pattee. It could be worn with black or dark green trousers.

Typical Saxon uniform from the 1790s, just prior

to Hanson’s time.

The Trafalgar CoatThe year 2005 is the 250th anniversary of thefounding of The Order of Saint Joachim, but isis also the 200th anniversary of the Battle ofTrafalgar, and the death of our Order’sarguably most famous member, Vice-AdmiralLord Viscount Nelson of the Nile andBurnham Thorpe KB, GCJ, RN.

As Commander in Chief of the MediterraneanFleet, Nelson directed the battle from the deckof the HMS Victory on October, 21, 1805. ARoyal Navy fleet of 27 ships destroyed a com-bined French and Spanish fleet consisting of33 ships west of Cape Trafalgar in southwestSpain. Napoleon and his allies lost 22 ships;the British none. The British victory put anend to Napoleon's plans to invade Britainacross the English Channel and effectivelyended the war at sea.

About an hour after the battle had begun,Captain of the Fleet Thomas Hardy turned tosee Nelson on his knees - he had been hit inthe shoulder by a sniper's bullet fired fromfrom the Redoubtable. Nelson’s uniform coatbears the hole where the bullet entered.

The uniform coat Nelson was wearing atTrafalgar has been preserved and is on displayat the National Maritime Museum,Greenwich, UK. On the left side are “tinsel”versions of Nelson's four orders of chivalry -Knight of the Bath, Order of the Crescent,Order of Ferdinand & Merit and the breastcross of a Knight Grand Commander of TheOrder of Saint Joachim, awarded to him onSeptember 14, 1801, in recognition of his victo-ry over Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile.

The metal and enamel versions of Nelson’ssash and breast cross of The Order of SaintJoachim were on display at the Painted Hall ofGreenwich Hospital, until stolen in December1900. They have never been recovered.

In the short time since it’s found-ing, the Canadian Commanderyhas introduced a dozen new mem-bers into the Order, almost half ofwhom have now been advanced toknighthood. Numerous expres-sions of interest from other indi-viduals ensure that it will continueto grow.

The Canadian Commandery has todate performed three Ceremonies ofAdmission and Advancement toKnighthood. Its ceremonies are heldat the beautiful St. Thomas Aquinas Church indowntown Toronto. The Reverend DanielBrereton of Christ Church Cathedral,Hamilton has been appointed Chaplain for theCommandery.
