The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 1034 20 October 2017 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hhs.herts.sch.uk Dear Parents/Carers As you may have read in last week’s newsletter I have been elected Chair of Governors following last Wednesday’s Governing Body meeting. Firstly, I would like to thank Mr Paul Stanbridge for his work as Chair of Governors over the past year. Some of you will know me, or at least have heard my name, as I have been a school governor for many years, firstly at Boxmoor Primary School, then here at The Hemel Hempstead School. I was elected as a Parent Governor here in February 2009 and as a Partnership Governor in March 2017. I was also a student of the school over 30 years ago and all of my four children have attended the school, the youngest leaving just last year. As you are aware, the school is going through challenging and exciting times, with a lot to look forward to including a new building to house MFL, Music and Science as well as offering a base to the Dacorum Music School; a new Sports Hall; an increased dining area and expansion from six to seven forms of entry. The new 3G artificial pitch is nearing completion and will be up and running soon. In last week’s newsletter I outlined the plan that has been put in place to support the school for the Spring and Summer terms 2018 after Patrick Harty’s move to John Colet School in January. In the next few weeks we will be requesting nominations for two new parent governors. If you think this is something you would like to do, why not look on the Hertfordshire website Becoming a School Governor to see what is involved? It can be a very rewarding role, but will at times take up your evenings with meetings sometimes lasting up to three hours and finishing late. Governor training can help your personal development with subjects such as school visits, health and safety, safeguarding, safer recruitment, school finance and understanding data. The list is extensive and although you will not be expected to attend all of these courses, the more you attend the better equipped you will be for the role. I was told in the early days of being a school governor that if I have any doubt about a course of action or decision to be made I should always ‘PUT THE PUPILS FIRST’. Mr Steven Mansbridge Chair of Governors International Languages Day 2017 Did you know? The British Council surveyed 20,000 UK adults about languages, and 63% believed that speaking another language was crucial in today’s climate, and 61% felt languages showed Britain to be ready for business post-Brexit. To celebrate the importance of languages, Year 8s celebrated International Languages Day and did themselves proud, learning several different languages, including Polish, Spanish, Punjabi, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Welsh, and British Sign Language. They also took part in a languages quiz, celebrating lots of languages around the world! From Polish idioms to Japanese writing, Year 8s were able to gain insight into the cultures and languages from different parts of the world. Well done especially to those students who were filling up their reward cards and to those who received R2s for all their excellent work throughout the day. We look forward to next year! Democracy Day

Last week twelve Gifted and Talented Year 9 students were selected to go on a trip to the Dacorum Forum to participate in the Youth Democracy Day. During the day the students worked with pupils from other schools around Hemel Hempstead. Throughout the day we read the current political parties’ manifestos and, using some information from these, we split into three groups (The People’s Planet Party, The Next Generation and The Lifeline Legacy Party). We used the current manifestos to create our own manifestos, party symbol and an entire political party, including some student politicians. Eventually there were elections and, as in real life, there were winners and losers. Everyone involved had a really good day and learnt a lot. Who knows? Maybe we have inspired a future politician.
