    2/16

This guide has been made by

    Stavroula Kounadea (STAV) and

    Felicity Ford (FELIX) AKA

It tells you where to find good

beer, nice cakes, solace, and themarvellous in Oxford, as well aswhere to go if you need to

replace a speaker cable at thelast minute, and (perhaps most

    essentially) where you can play

    and party.

The guide is part of the HEARth

    programme: an event-series

    running alongside Audiograft

    2013, 27th Feb - 2nd March. For

HEARth and Audiograft eventlistings visit audiograft.com.

Audiograft is an annual festival of

    Contemporary Experimental Music

and Sound Art curated by the

Sonic Art Research Unit (SARU) at

    Oxford Brookes University. The

festival aims to engage audiencesfrom Oxford and beyond with the

practices that are the focus of the

    Research Unit.

    audiograft.com

    sonicartresearch.co.uk

    STELIX is comprised of Felicity

    Ford and Stavroula Kounadea.

    Felix has hand-knitted a speaker

system and made radio based on

the washing up, while Stav can

wire a plug and use a wire stripperas effectively as she can bake a

    dozen cupcakes. Mixing our worlds

    in scores, performances, and DIY

    learning programmes, we've

    created artwork about handbags,

    mixtapes, sewing machines, and

    making our own pants.

    HEARth is an artwork about

getting the most out of attendinga Sound Art and Contemporary

    Experimental Music festival, and

    relating the inspiring contents to

    the experiences of everyday life.

    Welcome to the artwork.

    Port Meadow

Port Meadow is the largest area of common land in Oxford. Also, one of thevery few places around where you can enjoy an uninterrupted view of thehorizon. The land here has never been ploughed or turned and the cows arevery friendly (sometimes). Perfect if you're looking for a relaxing state ofmind not far from the city. You can find directions to it in our handy escapemap!

Iffley Lock on the River Thames

If you meet the RiverThames (or Isis as it's called around here) at any pointaround town and head south along its footpath you'll discover the beautiesof the Iffley Lock. You'll be welcomed by the quacking of ducks and theroaring sounds of the River and if you're looking for a sit down then the IsisTavern on the west side of the lock is a real gem. Also included on our handyescape map.

arty Magdalen Road youll really thank us for putting this one in the guide.

Retro-chic would be the correct way to describe it, I guess, but this doesnt

even start to explain in how many ways this cafe is amazing. Delicious

cakes, a ton of different types of tea, scavenged china, art on the walls. A

slice of paradise. (The best Eggs Benedict Stav had in her life).

    White Hart, 12 St Andrew's Rd, Headington, OX3 9DL

Beautiful Olde Worlde Pub covered in wooden panelling and traditionally

rustic. Tucked away in the quiet and picturesque village of Old Headington

just across the road from St. Andrews Church.

Serves food. (Try the BBQ Ribs!)

    The Star, 21 Rectory Rd, OX4 1BU

According to a reviewer, this is where you can find local band-members,

their relatives, and their sound-engineers. The haters would call it a hipster

pub, the lovers would say its the best pub on the Cowley Road Area. Also a

good place to escape from the Internet as theres no wi-fi. Free pool on

    Sundays.

Tel. 01865 248011 Open til midnight.

    The Port Mahon, 82 St Clement's St, OX4 1AW

Friendly and relaxed pub a short stroll away from Oxford Brookes. We like it

because it has sofas, board-games, regular gigs in the upstairs room and a

    pub-quiz on Sundays.

    Tel. 01865 790970 4pm - 11pm every day, stays open until 1am Fri - Sat.

Serves food. Their Sunday roasts have a good reputation.

The Turf Tavern, 4-5 Bath Place, OX1 3SU

A bit of an Oxford institution, this 13th century Olde Schoole pub has a

great selection of quality beers and is tucked away in earshot of some fine,

sonorous Oxford bells. Get someone who lives in Oxford to show you where it

is after the concert at the Holywell (28th Feb) and if you cant get a table

indoors, dont worry, they have heaters outside.

MAKE SOUND HERE is a distributed sound project by James

Saunders that locates places where sounds can be made

through interacting with the immediate environment. All the

sounds are created through human interaction, rather than

    being ambient and always present.

When you are out and about, listen to the world around you,

paying attention to places where it is possible to cause

interesting sounds to occur. When you find an interesting

possibility for making sounds in a particular location, make a

short audio recording of the sounds. After recording the

sound, place the label in a position that makes the source of

the sound clear, and photograph this situation. Remove the

label on completion: please don't make a mess. Once

complete, upload the recording and photo via

    makesoundhere.com or audioboo.fm/makesoundhere.

Include a short description of how to make the sound, and

make sure the location is marked on the map.

    http://www.james-saunders.com

    http://makesoundhere.com

    MAKE SOUND HERE

During the HEARth programme, STELIX will lead a sound

walk from Modern Art Oxford themed around exploring

the participatory project Make Sound Here by James

Saunders. In the meantime, we thought wed give you the

basics for joining in right here, because we reckon Oxford

(like most places, really) is more fun with a little sonic

    intervention.
