The opening week of Lawn Manor Academy has been absolutely fantastic! The term started for staff on Friday 1st September and lots of hard work and training took place before we welcomed Year 7 and Year 11 to school on Tuesday 5th September. All pupils and staff have taken part in expectations of Lawn Manor Academy assemblies where it was outlined what the changes would be for them in their time at the school. These have been really well received and the standard of uniform that the children arrived in has been outstanding. It is really important for us that there is a huge pride in the school and its work in the community, alongside the highest expectations for our pupils and this message was made very clear. To make this happen, systems for managing behaviour for learning have changed and it is important that you read this information on the website in order to support us fully. You will find that things are being done differently at Lawn Manor Academy and I urge you to support this change. The change is happening to ensure that your child gets the best education possible and leaves us with the qualifications that will matter to them in later life, no matter what they want to do. Aspirations for your children exist at the highest level at Lawn Manor for your child and we want to ‘inspire and create futures for all’. I LEARN

This year we have been making a few changes to the way things are done at Lawn Manor Academy, positive changes that we believe will inspire the learners in our care and help them to build towards creating futures that are right for them.

As part of this reappraisal, we have looked at refocusing our priorities, redoubling our efforts to make sure that everything we do has learning as its primary objective. We have therefore begun to introduce I LEARN across the Academy and in so doing we aim to ensure that not a minute is wasted in giving our young people the skills they will need to function in the classroom and in their future lives. We will celebrate all of the core aspects of I LEARN, which are Independence, Literacy, Equipment, Attitude, Resilience and Numeracy every day in some way.

Throughout the year we will tie these ideas into all aspects of Academy life – in PSHE for example, and thinking and reflecting in the I LEARN tutor-led sessions in the morning. In lessons this will function as a reminder for the way we think about learning and how best we are able to learn. I LEARN will also feature as Lawn Manor Academy’s core values, and tie closely into our shared vision: Inspiring and creating futures for all, which means we will be able to uphold the same high standards in each and every classroom, which will ensure that each and every pupil at the school will have the opportunity to thrive.

Due to our open days for year 6 pupils, we will be closing early at 12.20pm on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st September.

Early Closure 20th and 21st September

‘The Kitchen’ at Lawn Manor

As part of our assessment programme, we use several sets of student data to monitor your child’s progress and inform our teaching. One of the tools we use are the CAT4 Tests, Progress Test Series and New Group Reading Test from GL Assessment, to give us an acute understanding of a pupil’s potential. This data is considered alongside any other assessments made throughout the year, formal or informal, to inform our teaching. As part of this process we also do a comparison of student CAT4, PT Series and NGRT results with their eventual grade at KS2, GCSE & A-Level level. Therefore we authorise on your behalf for our KS2, GCSE & A-Level results to be supplied to GL Assessment who then deliver back to us a comparative analysis. This gives us a very useful report as part of an ongoing assessment programme at the school. As we take the safeguarding of our student data very seriously, I wanted to take the opportunity to let you know how your child’s assessment data is used to continually improve the teaching and learning process at the school. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

Jonathan Hill Assistant Headteacher for Achievement

You may have heard of the term 'geotagging' which is a concern for the online safety of young people. On Facebook for example, if young people have 'location services' enabled then their 'friends' online can see where they are. This becomes an issue when they are 'friends' with people they don't actually know. As well as Snap Chat Maps and Facebook, lots of apps can make use of your location data and for young people this could obviously prove problematic.

Our advice is to encourage all young people to turn off location services in phone settings /apps.

We continue to use the Teacher2Parents system to communicate directly with parents via email or text. We have found this to be a much more effective system than ‘pupil post’. It does depend on us having an up to date email address and mobile telephone number for all parents/carers. Please ensure that you keep the academy informed of any changes. As is usual this time of year, we will be sending out data collection sheets for parents to check and complete to ensure we have up to date information for every student.

We have a new food service provider, Caterlink, who are running ‘The Kitchen at Lawn Manor.’ Fresh home-made hot and cold food is available for breakfast 8.00am-8.30am, during morning break and lunchtime.

The cost of a ‘meal deal’ is currently £2.20, which includes a main, a drink and hot sweet or fruit – exact details can be found at the canteen.

Please see the leaflet attached to the end of the newsletter with further details.

BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (2017-18)

A GUIDE FOR PARENTS/CARERS

The Behaviour for Learning Policy is underpinned by the school’s vision and values statement:

“Inspiring and Creating Futures for All”

Lawn Manor Academy believes that outstanding behaviour and disruptive free learning is necessary for effective teaching to take place and for pupils to reach their potential. All staff aim to create and maintain an environment in the school which encourages and reinforces good behaviour. Furthermore, it is acknowledged that society expects good behaviour as an important outcome of the educational process. We work towards core values based on the acronym of I LEARN (Independence, Literacy, Equipment, Attitude, Resilience, Numeracy) and standards of behaviour from the acronym PUPIL (Punctuality, Uniform, Politeness, Instructions, Locality). In order to achieve outstanding Behaviour for Learning, the school requires parents/carers to support in the following ways: • support their child in fulfilling their responsibilities as a pupil, including attendance at relevant parental

meetings • communicate politely with the academy through telephone, email, or letter • supporting decisions made by the school in relation to promoting high expectations and good

behaviour. Praise & Celebration Praise and celebration can motivate pupils and help them to see that good behaviour is valued; the most powerful form of reward is verbal praise. The school is committed to promoting and rewarding good behaviour and may do so in some of the following ways: Postcards, phone calls, texts, letters home, certificates “Pupil of the Month” Reward trips House Points Passport to Success (Yr 11)

Lawn Manor Academy Expectations & Consequences BEHAVIOUR IN LESSONS Lessons are calm and purposeful. The school also uses a C1, C2 warning system to help pupils correct their behaviour in lessons; failure to do so leas to a C3 being issued. A C3 is a ‘Safety Net’ system whereby they are required to work in an alternative room to regain focus and so as to not further disrupt the learning of other pupils. Pupils who are issued with a C3 Safety Net also receive a 1 hour same-day detention. More information relating to the school’s consequence system in the event of a pupil’s failure to complete homework can be found in the Homework section of the website for parents.

BEHAVIOUR OUTSIDE OF LESSONS Lawn Manor Academy has high expectations of behaviour around the site and during unstructured times (outside of lessons) and pupils need to conform to the “Lawn Manor Way” which includes the expectations outlined by “PUPIL”. Pupils will be expected to carry Conduct Cards at all times and should they fail to meet the school’s expectations, then staff will record a Conduct Point. I LEARN Tutors will check Conduct Cards each morning and should a pupil receive 5 Conduct Points, then they will be issued with a C4 detention. If a pupil loses their Conduct Card, then they will be issued with a C5 detention. DETENTIONS Detentions are part of the school’s consequence system to encourage pupils to recognise that their behaviour or attitude to learning has not been acceptable. When issued, detentions are compulsory. Failure to attend a detention will result in the pupil being placed in the school’s Internal Exclusion Room (IER) as a consequence. Whilst the Department for Education states that schools are not required to give notice, given reasons, or gain parental consent for a detention, Lawn Manor Academy will send a text to advise parents of same-day detentions. It is important that parents/carers keep the school up to date with the contact telephone numbers. LAWN MANOR INTERNAL EXCLUSION ROOM (IER) This is a specially designated room for pupils whose behaviour has been unacceptable. They are supervised by the IER Manager at all times and it runs between 8.40am and either 4.30pm or 5.00pm depending on the level of consequence. Pupils are expected to work in silence and are given appropriate work to complete. If a pupil who is booked into the IER refuses to take their place, this will lead to a Fixed Term Exclusion (FTE), although the pupil will still be expected to return back to IER upon their return to school as part of the reintegration from Fixed Term Exclusion. If the pupil is absent from school and does not attend their session, then the session will be automatically rebooked into the IER for the following day. EXCLUSIONS Lawn Manor Academy will follow government guidance on exclusions, unless there is a good reason to depart from it. The school aims to operate within the principles of fairness and natural justice. Exclusions can take the form of:

• Fixed Term Exclusions • Lunchtime Exclusions • Permanent Exclusions

The school’s policy on exclusions applies to serious breaches of discipline occurring on and off of the school premises. On occasion, a pupil may be placed on Internal Exclusions in the IER or with another member of staff. This may be as a consequence or whilst members of staff are dealing with whatever situation has occurred. LATENESS Good punctuality is a vital life skill and therefore lateness to school is unacceptable and is taken very seriously. A same-day detention will be issued for any pupil who is late to school. Parents will be notified by text. Conduct points will be issued for any pupil who is late to lesson. EQUIPMENT Being prepared is another important life skill and therefore failure to bring equipment to school is unacceptable and is taken very seriously. Pupils must ensure they bring a pencil case with them and that it is placed on their desk in all lessons. Pupils must also ensure that they bring their PE & Dance Kit and

Accelerated Reader books to school as directed. A same-day detention will be issued for any pupil who fails to bring their equipment to school. Complete Pencil Cases are available to purchase at Student Services. STAGES OF SUPPORT FOR BEHAVIOUR – PERSONALISATION & EQUALITY If a pupil has 10 behaviour entries, then the I LEARN Tutor will make a decision to place that pupil on Level 1 of our Stages of Support. Parents will be informed when pupils are placed on Stages of Support. Behaviour is monitored daily and progress will be reviewed at the end of each term, at which point the pupil be come off of report or be escalated to the next level. Stage of Support On report to: Level 1 I LEARN Tutor Level 2 Year Leader Level 3 (IBP) Lead Professional (Pastoral) or Assistant Headteacher Level 4 (PSP) Deputy Headteacher or Headteacher NB - The timings of the report may vary slightly and are at the Year Leader / Lead Professional /Deputy Headteacher’s discretion. The school will consider engaging additional internal and external intervention where possible to support pupils Parents are reminded that the school’s consequence system is also applicable to pupils when they are away from Lawn Manor Academy premises, for example on the journey to or from school, on school trips, or even during the holidays if the behaviour could have repercussions for the orderly running of the Academy, affects the welfare of members of the school community, or which brings the school into disrepute. Day to day procedures that ensure the smooth operational practice may be changed at the discretion of the Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher. A full copy of this Behaviour for Learning policy can be found in the Policies section of the website or a hard copy can be requested from the school office.
