The Haversack The Newsletter of the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter
Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution
May 2014
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Our recent Semi-annual Chapter Meeting was a great
success; memorable patriotic fellowship, informative
and entertaining, nearly overbooked, and considerably
briefer than has been our custom – all thanks to the ex-
ceptional planning and precise execution of our 1st and
2nd Vice Presidents, our Treasurer (aka MDSSAR Presi-
dent), and an overflowing room of Compatriots, hon-
orees, and special guests.
Chapter efforts to “level our workload” have been ad-
vanced considerably by both Compatriot Sheldon Sheal-
er’s decision to lead our very important Public Relations
Committee, and by our acquisition of several new Com-
patriots over the past few months. At your first oppor-
tunity please reach out to thank Sheldon and give a
warm welcome to Compatriots Kevin Linus Campbell,
George Clyde Bailey, Bradley Benjamin Champion and
J. Patrick Warner.
Of considerable note, in the category of what some
members may have missed over the past weeks, are the
excellent presentation of the History of the MDSSAR
delivered by Chris Smithson (State Historian) during the
MDSSAR Annual Meeting in Westminster, MD, and the
riveting Middletown Valley Historical Society presenta-
tion, by Compatriot Jack Schrodel, on the life, times, and
mysteries of our Chapter Patriot, and namesake, Ser-
geant Lawrence Everhart.
Your Chapter Executive Committee continues to meet
monthly to streamline Chapter business, review current
and consider future obligations, address pending changes
in our Chapter business/annual/fiscal years, and consider
an adjustment to our Chapter dues structure (look for
more on these items in the next edition of your Haver-
sack).

Medal of the
Month
This is the first in a
series of articles pre-
senting the medals and
awards of the SAR. The
series will initially focus
on medals the Sergeant
Lawrence Everhart
Chapter is authorized to
approve and present.
However, given the spe-
cial nature of The SAR
125th Anniversary Med-
al, it has been chosen to open the series.
The Awards Committee encourages Chapter
members to nominate, for special recognition,
your fellow compatriots who have gone
“above and beyond” in service to our organi-
zation and community.
The SAR 125th Anniversary Medal, dis-
played above, was authorized in 2013. It
commemorates the one hundred twenty fifth
anniversary of the founding of the National
Society of the Sons of the American Revolu-
tion. Only a member who was a dues-paying
member between January 1, 2014 and De-
cember 31, 2014 may wear it. In addition,
new members whose applications had been
submitted during that time may also wear it.
The medal is bronze in color and features the
likeness of President George Washington
(2014 is the 225th anniversary of George
Washington taking his oath of office). The
medal is suspended from a chest ribbon of
blue, buff and white and comes in a set with a
full size and miniature medal. This medal can
be ordered through the NSSAR website store
(SKU #0380) and is priced at $30.00 plus
shipping and handling.

TIM SUTPHIN SPEAKS AT SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING
Mr. Tim Sutphin, Director of Revolutionary City Programs for
the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, was the guest speaker
at the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter, Maryland Society
Sons of the American Revolution semi-annual meeting held at
Dutch’s Daughter.
Mr. Sutphin related the history of the Williamsburg Fife and
Drum Corp, which started with 5 members and grew to its cur-
rent membership of 110, conducting over 700 events a year in
2013. He shared his personal experience as a past member of
the Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drum Corp from 1975 to
1983 and how the corps provided leadership, discipline and
character building values.
During the past 18 months, Mr. Sutphin has provided the local
SAR chapter with invaluable guidance and recommendations for establishing our own Frederick Town
Fife and Drum Corps. The local SAR chapter, in partnership with local community organizations as well
as the Frederick County Board of Education, will model the local Fife and Drum Corps after the enor-
mously successful Williamsburg Corp.
The Frederick Town Fife and Drum Corp will be made up of 10-19 year old boys and girls dedicated to
preserving the historic art of fifing and drumming through live performance at parades, historical and
patriotic celebrations, concerts, cultural affairs, and other civic events in Frederick, Maryland.
For more information, contact the Sgt. Lawrence Everhart 1st Vice President, Don Deering, 301-606-
8827 or [email protected].
LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMENDATION MEDAL
The Sgt. Lawrence Everhart Chapter, Maryland Society Sons of the
American Revolution (SAR) Law Enforcement Committee Chairman
Carl Harbaugh presented Detective Michael R. Morgan, the SAR Law
Enforcement Commendation Medal for distinction and service in the
field of law enforcement. Detective Morgan, an 18 year veteran of
the Frederick City Police Department, for the past 11 years has been
assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division, a team of detectives
who have primary responsibility over the investigation of some of the
most high-profile cases within the City of Frederick. Detective Mor-
gan earned this recognition by volunteering for some of the depart-
ment's most difficult cases, such as the 2007 Deysi Benitez murder/
suicide case, which was featured on America’s Most Wanted pro-
gram, and was the lead investigator for the Colonial Jewelry Store
robbery of more than $100,000.00 of Rolex watches, leading to the
arrest of one person. Detective Morgan is also a certified Maryland
Police Training Commission instructor and is one of department's two
polygraph operators. For more information about the SAR and the
community programs they support, contact 1st Vice President Don Deering, 301-606-8827 or
