Ask ye of the Lord rain in

the time of the latter rain; so

the Lord shall make brightclouds, and give them

    showers of rain. He will

cause to come down for you

the rain, the former rain, and

the latter rainThe Lordemploys these operations of

    naturenature to represent the work

of the Holy Spirit. TM 506.

Let us now fearthe Lord our God,

    that giveth rain,

    both the former

    and the latter, in

    his season: hereserveth unto us

    the appointed

    weeks of the

    harvest. Jer. 5:24

As the third message swells to a loud cry, and as greatpower and glory attend the closing work, the faithful

people of God will partake of that glory. It is the latter

rain which revives and strengthens them to pass through

the time of trouble. 7BC 984.

    And it came to pass

    afterward, the he went

    throughout every city

    and village; preaching

and shewing the gladtidings of the kingdom

    of God: and the twelve

    were with him. Lk. 8:1

    And when much

    people were gathered

together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake

by a parable: A sower went out to sow his seedNow the

parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Lk. 8:4, 5, 11.

In the work that was accomplished

on the day of Pentecost, we may see

what can be done by the exercise of

faithThe seed had been sown by the

greatest Teacher the world had ever

known. For three and a half years theSon of God had sojourned in the land

of Judea, proclaiming the message of

the gospel of truth and working with

mighty signs and wonders. The seed

had been sown, and after His ascension the greatingathering took place. More were converted by one sermon

on the day of Pentecost than were converted during all the

years of Christ's ministry. So mightily will God work when

men give themselves to the control of the Spirit. 7BC 1055.

    In the East the

former rain falls at thesowing-time. It is

    necessary in order

    that the seed may

    germinate. Under the

    influence of thefertilizing showers,

    the tender shoot

    springs up. TM 506.

As the dew and the rain

are given first to cause the

    seed to germinate, and then

to ripen the harvest, so the

Holy Spirit is given to carry

    forward, from one stage to

    another, the process of

    spiritual growth. TM 506.

He shall come down like rainrain

upon mownupon mown grass: as showers

that water the earth. Ps.72: 6.

    The latter rain, falling

    near the close of the

    season, ripens the grain

    and prepares it for the

    sickle. TM 506.

The ripening of the grain represents the completion of the

work of Gods grace in the soul. By the power of the Holy

Spirit the moral image of God is to be perfected in the

character. We are to be wholly transformed into the likeness

    of Christ. TM 506.

    Thrust in thy sickle, and

reap; for the time is come

for thee to reap; for the

harvest of the earth is ripe.

    Rev. 14:15.

    Many have in a great

    measure failed to receive

    the former rain. They have

    not obtained all the

    benefits that God has thus

    provided for them. They

expect that the lack will be

    supplied by the latter rain.

When the richestabundance of grace shall

    be bestowed, they intend

    to open their hearts to

    receive it. They are making

    a terrible mistake. TM 507.

    Unless the early showers

    have done their work, the

latter rain can bring noseed to perfection. TM

    In a special sense Seventh-day

Adventists have been set in the world as

watchmen and light bearers. To themhas been entrusted the last warning for

a perishing world. On them is shining

wonderful light from the word of God.

They have been given a work of the

    most solemn import--the proclamation

of the first, second, and third angels'messages. There is no other work of so

great importance. They are to allow

nothing else to absorb their attention.

    The most solemn truths ever

entrusted to mortals have been given

us to proclaim to the world. The proclamation of these truths is tobe our work. The world is to be warned, and God's people are to be

true to the trust committed to them. They are not to engage in

speculation, neither are they to enter into business enterprises

with unbelievers; for this would hinder them in their God-given

    work

Are we to wait until the

    fulfillment of the prophecies of

the end before we say anything

    concerning them? Of what value

will our words be then? Shall we

    wait until God's judgments fall

    upon the transgressor before we

tell him how to avoid them?

Where is our faith in the word of

    God? Must we see things

foretold come to pass before we

will believe what He has said? In

    clear, distinct rays light has

come to us, showing us that thegreat day of the Lord is near at

hand, "even at the doors." Let us

read and understand before it is

too late. Testimonies, Vol. 9, pp.

    19, 20.

Servants of God, with their faces lighted up and

shining with holy consecration, will hasten from

place to place to proclaim the message from

heaven. By thousands of voices, all over the earth,

the warning will be given. Miracles will be wrought,

the sick will be healed, and signs and wonders willfollow the believers The arguments have been

presented. The seed has been sown, and now

it will spring up and bear fruit. The publications

    distributed by missionary workers have

exerted their influence, yet many whose minds

were impressed have been prevented from fullycomprehending the truth or from yielding obedience. Now the rays of light

penetrate everywhere, the truth is seen in its clearness, and the honest

children of God sever the bands which have held them. Family connections,

church relations, are powerless to stay them now. Truth is more precious

than all besides. Notwithstanding the agencies combined against the truth, a

large number take their stand upon the Lord's side. GC 612.
