Greetings fellow Volkssporters!

I know there is concern out there about the growing health situation with the

COVID-19 pandemic. The club is taking a look at our events and we’ll make

decisions as needed about full-scale cancelations, but for now, if you feel you need

to stay home, stay home. We will keep everyone updated with e-mail and our social

media sites: Facebook & Meetup.

We have our annual fundraiser for the AVA – known as the “Big Give” – coming

up from 19 – 26 MARCH this year! To donate online, go to:

Please donate online on MARCH 26th, between 1AM - 7AM & the AVA might

win “bonus $$" from the Big Give organizers. Last year, we received a $1,000

The Start time for our Sunday Walks is changing. Beginning: March 22 Sanford Start time is 8:00 AM

Saturday Walk Hontoon Island State Park ~ April 11th 9:00 AM for our Group Walks 5km/11km

No state park fee. Start point is on the Island. Allow an extra 15 minutes to your drive time to account for taking

the ferry to the island - only 6 people allowed on ferry per trip. Walk starts promptly at 9 AM No picnic. We’ll

drive into nearby DeLand for lunch.

#National Walking Week April 1st – 7th

The first week of April is “National Walking Week.” The Happy

Wanderers will walk April 1st, our Wednesday night “fun walk” & April 5th, our

Sunday YRE Group Walk. We encourage all Happy Wanderers to

promote National Walking Week by posting and sharing all of their walks from

that week to their social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. & don’t

forget to use the hashtag: #NationalWalkingWeek. Show your Spirit!!!

Happy Wanderers Baseball Night Thursday, April 16th

The Daytona Tortugas have released a statement that the start of the season has been postponed. As of today, we are

still a go. We will keep everyone updated with e-mail and our social media sites: Facebook & Meetup.

Thursday, April 16th 5:30 PM $20 fee due to Dan Spink by April 1st Picnic starts at 5:30 PM. Game 7:05 PM

Our annual Picnic and baseball game this year will be on Thursday, April 16th. The Picnic Porch will be open from 5:30

to 7:30, with the game starting at 7:05. The menu includes BBQ chicken,

hamburgers, hot dogs, pulled pork, baked beans, salad, potato salad, water, iced tea,

and Pepsi products.

The cost is $20 per person and the deadline for registering is March 30th.

Make checks payable to: Daniel Spink. Mail to Dan or give your payment to any

officer of the Club at a walk.

If you park at the ball field there is a $3.00 cash fee per vehicle. As in previous years, tickets will be available on the day

of the game at Will Call which is located at the gate next to the Tennis courts. In case of rain and the ball game is

cancelled, the Picnic goes on as scheduled. The bracelet that you get along with your ticket may be used as a rain check

AVA YRE Online Start Box

What is the Online Start Box (OSB)?

All of The AVA’s 1800+YRE’s have a Start Box (Log, Payment option & Map.) Our Happy Wanderers 17

YRE’s have a physical box: you drive to the location, get box, sign log book, put $ in envelope, grab map

& walk. If there isn’t a local club, you can still find an event, the AVA has the online start box.

For fun, take a look at a list of ALL events (Traditional, Seasonal, YRE) by state: Go to:

https://my.ava.org/find-an-event.php Click ‘Search by State’ Click State. An event with ‘OSB’ is only

available through the Online Start Box. For a description of the event, click on it. It’s Fun! Start clicking!!!

To view Events on a State Map: http://clubs.ava.org/ava_map_eventsPC.asp select the state from drop

down menu, click ‘Map Events.’ For a description of an event, click ‘View.’ To pay & get your walk map/

directions: click ‘Register for event.’ You’re prompted to enter your login (or follow prompts to Create an

Account,) click the ‘Registration’ tab. Follow all instructions. Register/print directions before you travel.

How do I pay $3 Walk Fee?

When you create your Account, you will be prompted for a credit card. When you Register for an event, your

card will be charged when you click: Confirm

Fees: $3 for Registration, $2 for directions. The $2 Directions fee is refunded to you with a coupon.

I’ve written this wonderful article to promote traveling, when people are curtailing travel. Go ahead and plan

your future trip! When looking at a list of all events for Florida, you will notice the HW YRE’s are listed but

there’s no mention of our Group Walks, because this page is updated yearly. If you want to see if a club is

having a group walk, please go to the club’s web page. Note: OSB walks will not have a group walk.

Road Trip to Charleston, SC May 1, 2 & 3

The trip is still a go. Maureen Higgins has told me that the committee has until April 15th to let the bus company know

of a change of plans. If the committee decides to make a change, we will keep everyone updated with e-mail and our

social media sites: Facebook & Meetup.

This is going to be a blast! The walks include: Historic

downtown Charleston, Magnolia Plantation, Ravenel Bridge

and, on the way home, we’ll stop and walk the Hilton Head

YRE.

WAF30 Walk Around Florida 30 November 6th to 8th

We are the lead club for Walk Around Florida 30.

As we celebrate 30 years of a walking weekend with our sister clubs: The Mid-

Florida Milers (Orlando) and The Suncoast Sandpipers (Tampa.)

The last few years, we’ve had 130 participants attend WAF.

This is going to be a great event: 4 walks, 1 swim & a dinner.

Three of the walks will be Traditional Events, with volunteer positions needed to be

filled. The sign up will be online by September. The other clubs will take some of

the spots but, as the lead club, let’s have a strong Happy Wanderers presence and

give 2 hours of your time.
