their own language: scientists believe
that Canada geese have as many as 13
different calls for everything from
greetings and warnings to happiness.
Canada officially got its own national

years after it became a country (in

Between 1984 and 2008, it was illegal to
sell pop in cans in PEI. All carbonated
drinks had to be purchased in refillable
glass bottles. PEI was the only place in
North America to have a “can ban.”

COMMUNITY CORNER
What Is Melanoma?
The most dangerous form of skin cancer, these cancerous growths develop when unre-
paired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sun-
shine or tanning beds) triggers mutations (genetic defects) that lead the skin cells to mul-
tiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. Melanomas often resemble moles; some develop
from moles. The majority of melanomas are black or brown, but they can also be skin-
colored, pink, red, purple, blue or white. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occa-
sional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), If melanoma is recognized and treat-
ed early, it is almost always curable, but if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread
to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal.
There are 9 steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of skin cancer:-
1) Reduce skin exposure – especially between 11am to 4 pm when the sun rays are the
strongest.
2) Shade your skin – wear a hat, use an umbrella, were clothing of a tight weave or has
UV protection. Remember wet clothing or loose weave will allow the sun to
penetrate through to your skin.
3) Beware of cloud – 80% of the sun rays can penetrate through cloud, mist and fog.
4) Beware of reflection, water, and snow, concrete can all reflect 80% of the suns harmful
rays.
5) Use sun screen with a SPF of 15 or more which contains bot UVA & UVB protection.
6) Avoid tanning salons and sun beds – lead cause for sunburn, skin cancer and
contributes to premature aging.
7) Protect children – The harmful exposure to the sun rays occurs during childhood.
8) Protect your eyes – Radiation from the sun can damage the cell structure in your eyes.
Wearing sun glasses that protect against 100% UVA and UVB rays will reduce any
risks.
9) Spot check your moles - Examine your moles and freckles every month to check for
any changes.
10)See your health care provider if you notice:
-Any discoloration with your skin, moles or freckles.
-Moles or sores that does not heal.
-Areas on your skin that is red and bumpy, bleed or are itchy.
