About The Children’s ShelterSince 1901, The Children’s Shelter has provided safe homes for children. Today, we offer emergency shelter and residential treatment for children in crisis and help children find permanent homes in foster care and adoption. Our Family Strengthening programs teach nurturing parenting skills to vulnerable fami­ lies and help families overcome crises.

The Children’s Shelter relies on our community to help us realize our vision: Happy Children, Nurturing Families, Strong Communities. With your assistance, we create brighter futures for children and families.

Hope lives here at The Children’s Shelter. We see it every day in the smiles of the children we serve at the Emergency Shelter and KCI Residential Treatment Center. We see it in the eyes of the parents and families we serve through our Family Strengthening programs when they watch their children play. And we feel it in the hearts of The Children’s Shelter staff as they provide services to those we serve.

Last year, 2013, was a year of hope. The hope that the years of re­search we put into the process of becoming a truly trauma infused organization would become a reality. The hopes that the children and families we serve will find brighter futures through our programs and support. And the hopes that we can make San Antonio a better commu­ nity through our efforts to stop the cycle of child abuse and neglect.

In this Annual Report for 2013 you will see a lot of facts and figures that illustrate the successes of The Children’s Shelter. I hope it also illustrates the underlying strength and commitment of this organization to serving our children, families, and staff.

I’d like to add a special thank you to the donors and supporters who have been unwavering in their generosity over the past year. As always, we could not provide the level of care and compassion we do without your help. The year ahead is one of new and exciting changes in our organization. Changes in the way we look, the way we interact, and the way we feel towards ourselves and others. Change, although difficult and sometimes painful, is good and I know the upcoming changes will position us to lead the efforts in reducing child abuse and neglect. I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for The Children’s Shelter and I know, with the ongoing support of those who care for us so much, we will continue to be successful and, more importantly, we will continue to help our children and families find healing and hope.

ZACHRY COTTAGE EMERGENCY SHELTER The Children’s Shelter provides care for children ages birth to 14 years old removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The 56­bed shelter allows us to accommodate sibling groups so children do not have an additional trauma of being removed from their brothers or sisters. When children come into our care, they receive assessment services including medical, dental, and psychological to understand their individual situations.

54%KCI RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT CENTER Our Residential Treatment Center (RTC) provides care for children, ages 5­12, with serious emotional dilemmas because of prolonged abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The trauma children have endured has hindered their ability to react appropriately to stimuli. We provide trauma informed care to help them heal from their abuses and find a permanent home.

34PROJECT MOTHERS AND SCHOOLS (MAS) In 1998, The Children’s Shelter’s created Project MAS, a parenting and drop out prevention program for teenage mothers. The Project MAS program provides support to teen parents in a time of crisis to help them be success­ ful, give them hope for the future, and encourage them to stay in school, graduate and be good parents.

96%NURSE­FAMILY PARTNERSHIP (NFP) The Children’s Shelter operates one of seventeen Nurse­Family Partnership (NFP) programs in Texas. The NFP program model is rooted in over thirty years of evaluation and is proven to improve prenatal and maternal health, child development, reduce child maltreatment, and increase self­sufficiency. In the NFP program, baccalaureate registered nurses provide home visits to first time, low­income mothers.

97%COMPADRE Y COMPADRE A 15­week program that teaches fathers to become nurturing parents to prevent child abuse and neglect. Most fathers are referred from Child Protective Services or court systems. The first 5 hours of the program, “Daddy Boot Camp,” are designed to be an intense immersion into the world of being a father. Simultaneously, Parent Educators begin the evidence­based Nurturing Fathers Program and provide case management services. Once they graduate, fathers are invited to return as mentors, or compadres, to share their experiences with new fathers.

100%iPARENT SA A comprehensive parenting and family strengthening program with immediate and long term outcomes that reduce child maltreatment and bolster family relationships and economic stability. Highly trained and qualified Parent Educators work with families to facilitate evidence based parent education curricula. Parents are given a 24/7 crisis number to call in case of challenging situations. A Licensed Social Worker allows parents an opportu­ nity to voice critical issues constructively. When faced with critical situations that may challenge the safety of their children, parents may request emergency respite. One of our educators will meet them in order to facilitate temporary placement for up to 72 hours.
