On August, 19th and 20th, 2007our Awards Committee met in Hay-ward, Wisconsin.

They consist of a very talentedand devoted cross section of ourfresh water sportfishing leaders. They are: Bill Gautsche (Wisconsin);Larry Colombo (Alabama); ClemDippel (Wisconsin); Mike Dombeck(Wis consin); Elmer Guerri (Indi-ana); Tim Lesmeister (Minnesota);Gil Radonski (North Carolina); VinSparano (New Jersey); Burt Stein-berg (Missouri); Wendy Williamson(Wisconsin); Gregg Wollner (Minne -so ta) and Forrest Wood (Arkansas).

They looked at many back-grounds, but only a few were select-ed for this prestigious accolade. Theresults are as follows:

Elected for 2008 EnshrinementConsidered are persons who

have made a lasting National orWorld impact to the benefit of freshwater sportfishing.

Julio T. Buel - VermontJulio T. Buel is credited with the

invention of the spoon lure. One day while fishing, Buel

pulled his lunch out and started eat-ing. Somehow the spoon he was eat-ing with fell overboard. As the spoonsunk into the water, it attracted alarge bass, who attacked the spoon. When Buel finished fishing he wenthome and proceeded to start cuttinghis kitchen spoons up. He put a holeon each end of the spoon. A hook onone end and the other hole was usedfor attaching the line. The next dayhe went to his usual fishing spot, cast his line into the water and “loand behold” he came up with a bass. For the next couple of years he madespoons for his friends. In 1852 hepatented his first lure.

Ron Lindner – MinnesotaOver the past forty-five years,

Ron Lindner has become a world-renowned sport fishing leader. Heand his brother Al were co-foundersof Lindy Tackle as well as In-Fisher-man, Inc. The In-Fisherman maga-

zine, In-Fisherman Television aswell as radio shows, books, videos, calendars and the Professional Wall-eye Tournament circuit are all partof this organization. Ron’s new pur-suit is Lindner’s Angling Edge andLindner Media.

In pursuing his dream, Ron hasworn many hats – professionalguide, tackle and equipment design-er, inventor (3 patents and 30unique designs to his credit), tacklemanufacturer, professional tourna-ment angler, promoter, writer, pub-lisher, author, television producer, radio host, professional tournamentangler, Internet host, and perhapsmost importantly, an indefatigablycurious fisherman and consummateinnovator.

Ron’s work in angling theoryincludes co-authorship of 10 books. He also has written hundreds ofpublished articles; produced thou-sands of radio and TV scripts; devel-oped a comprehensive lake, riverand reservoir identification classifi-cation system and a fish responsecalendar and developed the famedF+L+P=S (Fish + Location + Presen-tation = Success) formula, describedas the algebra of angling. His earlyscientific approach to the sport(along with other pioneers) providedthe foundation, framework and lan-guage for today’s modern sport fish-ing forum. Ron is currently complet-ing his seminal work – The Proba-bility Tables.

Ron was inducted into the Na -tion al Fresh Water Fishing Hall ofFame in 1988 for his contributionand dedication to the sport of freshwater angling as a Legendary Ang -ler. He’s also listed in Who’s Who inAmerica.

John Palensky – OregonJohn was a natural leader who

prepared for his career in Fisherieswith a B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlifeand a M.S. in Fisheries. His Master’sresearch developed and utilizedways and means of conducting Or -gan oleptic Analyses of fish flesh, under a grant from the Environ-

mental Protection Agency. Thus hisearly contributions included scien-tific methodology for investigatingtaste and odor problems resultingfrom pollution and his quantitativefinding that even small amounts ofpollution could taint fish flesh.

John then moved to the FederalEnergy Regulatory Commission andreviewed hydro licensing applica-tions for their impact to fish andwildlife. His testimony was consid-ered authoritative and benefitedfish across broad geographical lines. In 1976, John moved to the Bon-neville Power Administration wherehe worked to minimize power gener-ation impacts to salmon andwildlife. In particular, he strived toimprove survival of anadromous fishruns and to promote broader under-standing of the highly complexinteractions of salmon and hydro -power in the Pacific Northwest.

In 1981, John was asked to de -vel op a Fisheries and Wildlife De -part ment in the Booneville PowerAd ministration for the purpose ofim plementing the Columbia RiverFish eries and Wildlife Program ofthe Northwest Power PlanningCoun cil.

Under John’s guidance, direc-tion and ability to work with others, the Columbia River Fish and Wild -life Program grew enormously andhas become the largest and mostcomplex fish and wildlife rehabilita-tion effort undertaken anywhere inthe world. Today, this pro gram con-sumes about $600,000,000 annuallyin direct and indirect costs, andsince its inception in 1983, has con-sumed well over $4 billion dollarsthus far.

The wild runs of salmon in theupper Columbia and Snake Basinsare beginning to increase their num-bers. An enormous amount of fishhatcheries have been constructed tosupport sport and commercial fish-ing and treaty obligations. The pro-gram has supported an equallylarge and complex research effort,es pecially in fish health and aquaticecology. (continued on page 5)

Bill Binkelman - WisconsinBill Binkelman first became in -

volved with the fishing publicthrough his position as SportingGoods Manager at the Boston Storein Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

While in that capacity, Billfounded an in-house subscriptionbased educational/promotional toolknown as Fishing News.

“Fishing News” grew because ofBill’s sincerity and unique methods.Bill left the Boston Store, and to -gether with George Pazik, theyfound ed “Fishing Facts” magazine.“Fishing Facts” was the first, allfish ing national publication of itskind. Through “Fishing Facts,” Billcontinued to teach and refine hisunique live bait methods.

Bill’s major literary effort camein 1965 when he authored “Night-crawler Secrets.” This book was thebasis for all of Bill’s live bait meth-ods and concepts. As Ron Lindnerhas stated, “undoubtedly enabledmore fisherman to catch more fishthan any other single thing that hasever happened!”

In addition to “NightcrawlerSecrets,” Bill also authored: “Night-crawler Magic,” “Minnow Methods,”“Catching Walleyes,” and co-au -thored: “Catching Fish” with Ronand Al Lindner.

Throughout this all, and much, much more not mentioned, the pri-mary motivation of Bill Binkelmanwas to teach people how to catchfish.

Robert F. Ellis - WisconsinBob served during WWII as a P-

47 fighter pilot in the U.S. Army AirCorps. He was shot down over Sar-dinia, Italy in 1944 and spent theremainder of the war as a P.O.W.

After leaving military service,Bob went on to the University ofWisconsin-Madison. At the Univer-sity of Wisconsin he was a championboxer. During the early 1950’s hebuilt a resort on Island Lake on theManitowish Chain near ManitowishWaters, Wisconsin. Bob was a pio-neer in the method of row trollingfor suspended muskies over deepwater. He plied his innovative andclassic trade on his home watersnear Boulder Junction and Mani-towish Waters, beginning in the1960’s. Tragically, Bob was killed ina boating accident in the fall of1989.

Elected for 2008Legendary Guide

Considered are persons whohave gained by their expertise andprofessionalism, a status of credibil-ity and immortality judged so bytheir customers, the region and/ortheir peers.

Milt Dieckman -WisconsinMilt is a true north woods fish-

ing guide who combines professionalfishing knowledge with a sort of“laid-back” attitude that allows hisclients to enjoy a memorable experi-ence. That so-called experienceincludes catching fish – but muchmore than that. Milt shares hismany years of fishing the primewaters of northern Wisconsin withhis clients. His stories are from first-hand experiences and are delightful-ly told. Included in his stories are

lessons of why fish respond to a cer-tain bait or method of fishing. Con-servation of our resources is anotherfavorite subject of Milt’s. All of theselessons are delivered in such a man-ner resulting in a day of enjoyment“on the water.” Additionally, Miltspent 30 years as a state of Wiscon-sin Game Warden!

Dick Grzywinski – MinnesotaDick “The Griz” Grzywinski may

well be Minnesota’s most famousfishing guide.

Known for his die-hard ap -proach to fishing, The Griz looks athis live well rather than his wrist-watch to decide when it’s time to callit a day. In fact, at the end of a longday on the water, Grzywinski hasbeen known to give his clients capsthat say, “I survived a Day with theGriz.”

Grzywinski is best-known forhis rip-jigging technique, which ac -counts for an outstanding number ofhundred-plus walleye days. Whenword of his phenomenal catchesbegan to spread in the mid-1980’s,Grzywinski was invited to the CampFish Jamboree, a charity fishingevent sponsored by In-Fisherman. Itis attended by dozens of the Mid-west’s top anglers. The Griz and hisguests lapped the field with a catchof 97 walleyes and 54 northerns – ina 6-hour trip! A legend was made.

The Griz specializes in walleyefishing, but he is also an accom-plished bass, pike, musky and pan-fish angler. And he’s not afraid oftackling new water, explaining theslogan on his business card, “HaveBoat, Will Travel.”

Denny Hannah - OregonThe name “Hannah Fishing”

has been around Oregon’s southcoast al rivers for a long time and hisreputation was based on honesty, friend ship, trust and good fishingetiquette. Denny was a full timeguide for almost 40 years and mem-ber of the Oregon Guides and Pack-ers Association. Denny pioneeredthe now famous smallmouth bassfishery both on the Umpqua andJohn Day Rivers. Denny developedand operated the Hannah’s Fishing

Lodge. Denny developed and usedspecialty boats, gear or techniquesand tackle for these dangerous wa -ters. While Denny specialized inguid ing for striped bass, sturgeon, steelhead and the various races ofPacific Salmon, he was also publicspirited and shared his vast knowl-edge. In particular, Denny hosted aboy’s camp, mentoring many youngguides in professional ethics andtechniques and occasionally assistedarea biologists.

As one result, his mentoringguides are a cut above the average. In short, Denny worked hard to im -prove his profession and take hisclients fishin!

Tony Rizzo – WisconsinFew, if any musky guides have

done more for their sport than TonyRizzo. He has certainly given moreof his sport than he has receivedfrom it. Since the early 1960’s, hiscareer has been filled with manyachievements along with thousandsof satisfied clients. Not only has heguided many of his personal clientsto their largest fish he also, throughhis books, articles and seminars, hastaught many fishermen to be moreproductive.

His clients have many thirtyand forty pound fish. Tony is a pa -tient and tireless worker who neverhas any predetermined quittingtime. He is notorious for putting inextra hours to get his customer theirfirst musky or to increase their per-sonal best.

He has written several booksthat are unique in the musky fish-ing library. His initial book, “Secretsof a Musky Guide” takes the readerthrough the different seasons of theyear and explains the most produc-tive techniques to use in each ofthese periods. Much of this materialhad never been in print before.Anoth er book, “The Summer Mus -kie” goes more into detail about sus-pended fish and how to fish forthem. This book changed many fish-ermen’s minds on how they fishedduring this period. Many of the tech-niques he discusses in these or oth-ers of his books, he initiated or per-fected them in some way. He has

developed several successful luresthat are favored by musky fisher-men all over the United States. HisMarabou Tails and The Whiz are ex -cel lent examples of this. The degreeby which they are copied by otherman ufacturers say something oftheir popularity and fish catchingability.

The clients Tony has had overthe years are in themselves a testi-monial to him. For the last twentyyears, they all knew they needed toget their “dates” early as Tony’sguide book was usually filled for theentire season before May 1. On his70th birthday, over 120 of them fromall over the United States, gave hima surprise party to thank him forthe good times, the fish they caught, his friendship and for simply beingTony.

Or ganization for many years. It washere that he saw the problems withlead and eventually developedENVIO-WEIGHTS, a lead replace-ment from landfill steel to makeweights, baits and jigs.

After retirement he fished forcan cer research and it was duringthis time that he was able to devel-op “The Step Above Fishing Sys-tems.” Twenty-two years ago hemade a rod, harness and belt for afriend who had lost an arm inKorea. No one was interested in de -vel oping it at that time. His cancerre search fishing brought him intocon tact with many people and hefound the opportunity to mass-pro-duce the equipment.

George started a companycalled RGM OUTDOORS to distrib-ute ENVIO-WEIGHTS and thehand icap fishing equipment to workwith and support the independenttackle shop.

George also writes a monthlynewspaper article for small townweek lies called Grandpa and theKids, a mythical grandfather andtwo mythical granddaughters andtheir outdoor adventures.

Lew Morrison - WisconsinBorn on a Dane County farm

near Oregon, Wisconsin in 1885; hedied in Brookfield, Wisconsin, Aug -ust 4, 1977, at the age of 92.

Lew was national dry fly castingchampion five times (1926-30) andheld the world accuracy record forfour years. Lew also held all-aroundcasting championships in Wiscon-sin, Michigan and Ohio during the1930’s.

Lew’s column “Out in the Open”ap peared in The Sentinel for 20years. He also was a regular per-former at The Sentinel Sports Showfor two decades and conducted manyother exhibitions and casting classesaround the state.

In addition to Lew’s achieve-ments as a fly and bait caster he wasnoted for his efforts in teaching cast-ing and fishing skills, especially toyoung people.

In 1968, Lew was honored at alarge testimonial dinner in Milwau-kee at which Dr. Tanner of Michi-

gan, known as one of the “fathers” ofthe Great Lakes Salmon program, was the main speaker. Lew was oneof the early advocates of salmonstocking in the Great Lakes.

Harry Renfro - IndianaHarry was “the” promoter and

ed ucator of fishing, then the cham-pion of a multitude of outdoorsports, in Indiana and elsewhere.

Harry’s yen for making anglersof children was remarkable. He nev -er saw a person he didn’t want tohelp in the outdoors.

Harry’s love for the young isgraphically illustrated by the youthfishing clinics (staged on the secondSaturday of his show each year) andhis gifts to youngsters a great vari-ety of angling paraphernalia.

He was as much at home withan exhibitor from afar as he waswith a show patron (who seldom rec-ognized him). The common man washis bowl of soup.

It would be difficult to find amore important person to fishing inIndiana.

Jean Sliwa - IllinoisJean’s passion for fishing came

at an early age. However, she couldnot really get into the sport becauseher father was afraid of water. Sowhen she was old enough to driveshe pursued the sport of fishing onher own. Some years later she mether husband to be, Cass, and tookthe golf clubs out of his hands andreplaced them with fishing rods. Thetwo of them ran a service station for33 years before Cass passed away.

Jean has been a member of Sal -mon Unlimited since its beginningin 1971. Jean and her husband Cassbe came involved almost from the be -ginning by joining various commit-tees that the organization had.

During the late seventies Jeanand her husband assumed the titleof Committee Coordinators, whichin effect was how the organizationfunc tioned. She has held many of -fices within the organization andcon tinues to be the backbone of Sal -mon Unlimited.

Her most recent accomplish-ment was the “Spend a Buck Save a

Coho” program that raised funds, sothat the state of Michigan couldcome close to their normal plantingof coho in 2008 and 2009. The finaltally for this effort was $49,651.Lake Michigan anglers owe Jean aworld of thanks for this accomplish-ment.

The Water Resources Develop-ment Act was passed in September,2007 with a four-to-one vote by theU.S. Senate. Among money for otherprojects affecting the Great Lakes, that pays for the permanent cre-ation of the electric barrier at theChicago Waterway Canal at LakeMichigan to keep Asian carp out ofthe Great Lakes. The Money would be allocated by

the U.S. Army Corps of Engineersfor a wide range of projects centeredon addressing causes of environ-mental contamination.

U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Har-rison Twp., said much of the money

would be directed toward high-techwater-monitoring equipment thatalready has been in stalled in manyarea water-treatment plants. ThePresident has threatened to veto thebill, Miller said, but she is confidentthe legislature has the votes to over-ride a veto.

WRDA passed the U.S. House onApril 19 by a veto proof vote of 394to 25, and in the U.S. Senate on May16 also by a veto proof vote 19 to 4.A conference committee was thencreated to work out differencesbetween the Senate and House ver-sions of the bill.

A conference report resolving

those differences passes in theHouse of Representatives on Aug ust1 by roll call vote, paving the way forenactment of the bill. The totalswere 381 Ayes, 40 Nays, 11 Pre-sent/Not Voting. The Bill HR 1495

now awaits the President’s sig -nature.

Miller said the economic im pactof the area’s water resources cannotbe overestimated. “It is literally ouridentity,” she said. “And unfortu-nately we have not … been the beststewards of this fantastic global (it’sreally global) treasure.”
