Rebecca Stredney will begin her tenure as pastor of the Mentor and Gypsum United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 5. The Method- ist churches hope to have a welcoming celebration for the Rev. Stredney sometime soon. Jay and Trish Bartlett, and their children Miguel Ortega (12) and Chase Bartlett (4), took their first camping trip of the year. The Bartlett’s nephew, Caden Burks (13) and their Grandma Janis came and spent the day with them on Monday. They left for Schmidt Lookout at Herington Reser- voir on Sunday, June 21 be- cause of Father’s Day. Due to last year’s flooding and having a newborn baby, the family had not been camping since August of 2018. They were ready to get back out there for a little rest and relaxation on the lake. Jay and the boys fished off the pier and caught a few fish. They played yard games like ladder golf, wash- ers and a family game of kick- ball, where the young ones had to go easy on the adults who tried their best to run the bases. Once the rain started in the evening, they spent time together as a family in the camper playing card games and Farkel. They were a bit concerned about the weather forecast because it was calling for severe storms with strong winds on Sunday afternoon into the evening. However, in true Kansas weather fashion, Mother Nature went against the weatherman’s forecast and decided to go easy on them. It rained for a few hours Sunday evening into the night but nothing severe. Monday was much sunnier and warmer throughout the day with some more rain during the night. Grandma took the boys to the swimming area on Monday afternoon. Because of a sur- prise rain shower on Monday evening, they cooked s’mores over the camper stove. They stayed two nights and came back Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday, June 24, some of the Helzer family had a get together at Russells Restau- rant. Archie Helzer’s sister, Pam Helzer Stratton recently moved to Florida. She re- turned this week for a visit. Those in attendence included Stratton; Shelly Reinke and her two grandsons from Sali- na; Archie, Arman, Rodney and Eric Helzer from Gypsum, Jeff, Sherri and Dallas Helzer from Manhattan. Kelly and Todd Mobray hosted “Purple and White Honor Night” at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 20 in their Assaria home. They honored kindergarten graduate, Maxx Mobray; the seventh grade activities and grades of Rylee Mobray and Kelly’s brother Jayson Emig for earning his Masters in Educational Administration from Kan- sas State University. He is a middle school teacher at Lakewood Middle School in Salina. Those attending with the family included Kelly’s dad, Danny Emig; Jayson and Haley Emig and their children Marlee and Kynlee Emig; Col- lin Hoeffner, neighbors John and Kim Kuhn and Southeast of Saline kindergarten teacher Rosetta Wiles. Wiles sur- prised Maxx with a cap and tassel and medallion. Recognitions were made, the group ate dessert and spent the evening in lawn chairs in the driveway talking while the kids played outside. by ALICIA PLANK / LNR Brothers Gary Olson and David Olson started wheat harvest on Wednesday, June 17. The Olson Farms crew includes Gary’s sons Bry- ant Olson and Trent Olson, Cody Randall, Austin Mor- timer, Resa Risinger, James Seidel, Michael Russell, Kyle Summers, Colton Stucky and Chase Spence. Olson Farms reported the average moisture was running 14 percent for the first few days, and then dried to 11.8 percent. The test weights have been anywhere from 58 to 60.5. The yields are 50 bushels to the acre on up, depending upon the vari- ety and when it was planted. They are hoping to be finished by July 4.
