LEITER FROM T IJE EDITOR

This issue is packed with information and stories from the spring tests. Fortunately, we had a great many dogs tested. Likewise. we had some significant educational efforts at the Judges Seminar in Wisconsin. Thus, we have lots of information through scores, dogs-evaluated notes, and pedigrees. So, we have added extra space in this issue for spring test photos. We know that you will enjoy additional confirmation of the breeding program's success, manifested in the dogs from Manh Stream and Valley H OUle. But the highlighting ofthcse (wo kennels is certainly not meant to diminish the success of those eight other dogs that prized

Thanks, John and Joe. Thanks, 100, Ann, Jill, Mary, Sandi, Sid, and Tina-il is great to have so many photos with which to work: .

NORTIIEAST CHAPTER SPRING TEST By Andy Goode

A rainy, wet spring in the Northeast miraculously took a break and gave the Northeast Chapter two days of sunny weather for the spring test held on May 16- and I7*'. A new test venue in the mountains of southern New Hampshire worked well for the testing of six Natural Abi lity dogs and one Intennediate dog. Overall the lest was very much a success-no birds escaped, the dogs and the handlers were eager, and no ticks were found in embarrassing places.

Five dogs were ftom Ted and Sandy Silver's MARSH STREAM litter. The two other dogs were mm Joanne and Mark Canfield's VALLEY HOUSE kennel.

On Friday two dogs scored a Prize I. These were Will Jenkins' BRISTLE OF MARSH STREAM and Jim Nester's BRODY OF VALLEY nOUSE. These were both superb, friendly dogs, with BRODY earning perfect scores. The third Natural Ability dog on Friday was John Marshalrs BARTOK OF MARSH STREAM who brought home a well-deserved Prize II .

On Saturday, Richard Oeser's BENTON OF VALLEY HOUSE failed to prize. The dog has a dense, harsh coat and good furnishings, and with some hard wort. by both handler and dog, plenty of birds will be put in the game bag. Also on Saturday, a pair of Prize Ill's were awarded for Natural Ability. The first went to Tim Dysart's BRIE OF MA.RSII STREAM and the second went to BIFF OF MARSH STREAM. The MARSH STREAM dogs are characterized as dark, liver-ticked dogs with good furnishings . The judges noted several of these dogs had a lower canine striking the upper jaw.

In the Intennediate test, Kcn Marck's AJAX OF MARSn STREAM fa iled to score. Ken has put in a lot of effort with this dog that the judge's feel will make a good field dog in time. Both the handler and dog have strong personalities, which the judges hope wi ll come together.

Everyone in attendance was appreciative of the good work of senior judges Ken Hurtig and Rick Molt and apprentice judges Erik Anderson, Kevin Jester, Nate Newman, Tim Schwager, and Ted Silver. As Test Chair, Erik Anderson did a great job in identifying and organizing a new site location. On Saturday night, Sarah Ander$O£1's parents, Betsy HotTman and Hayden Hillsgrove, hosted a Mexican fiesta at their spectacular woods home in Sandwich. The margaritas were flowing, the salsa was hot, and the food was the most authentic you can get north of the border. The festivi ties were capped by another successful silent auction.

The fall test will be held in Bristol, Maine on September 19·2 1,2003. Be sure to reserve your spot for the Molt's Saturday night clambake.

The RMGC held its annual test March 22, 2003 on the banks of the Snake River near Jerome, ldaho. In our one day orles!ing, we evaluated three NAT (Natural Ability) dogs and two 00 (Older HUniing Dog) dogs. The festivities began Friday night with a gathering at Gary and Ann Pool's house. We joy_ fully watched six Griffons play chase in the yard and then stuffed ourselves on lasagna. bread, salads, and

The highlight of OUT annual Test and Training Weekend. January 25-26, 2003, was having Ann and Gary Pool with us. They drove over from Idaho, and. of course, we put them to work. Unfortunately, as was the case last year, our distinguished senior members, Sally and Uarold Baskin, Klara and Joe Nadeker, Sheryl and Jack Dallimore, were unable 10 attend. Charter KOK member Herb Hasemann made it up on Saturday. Dennis Carlson made the long drive south, per usual, did. lot of judging, but only after proudly showing ofThis new pup BELLA. Our loyal GWPers Silke Alberts and Sharon Jahn were put to work judging, being "gorOft." and doing whatever needed to be done, assisted by Teresa and Gary Botmini. But first., Silke and Gary B. showed off their new GWP Danish imports, MIRA and II[CfOR (aka FREJA and SEP). and this year we were joined by Jim NeufTer and his wirehair, BUTZEN. As. always, our wonderful hosts, Hden and Warren Webster, ram-roded the whole shebang, assisted by everyone else.

SalUrday morning, we started with the three handsome Natural Ability pups. First up was BELLA and Dennis. both eager workers and willing to please, all 45. Next came MIRA and Silke, lotsofaclion, Pr. I ; then her brother, II ECTOR, also a goer, Pr. II. Following the two wirehair pups came BLlT£EN and Jim NeufTer, in the IHOT; they did well in Natural Ability subjccts, but had retrieving problems. With weather coopcnlting, lunch was provided in the field , hosted by Helen Webster and Donna Bcoscler, featuring Helen's fantastic pheasant and lentil soup. Good food, lots of chatting and visiting which were continued Saturday nighl. al our usual hangout, C. L. & Harrys in Oroville. This year, Gary Poole handled the score-reading chores befilling a WPGCA president, following in Warren's footsteps.

On Sunday ..... e ran okler dogs (or more like they ran us), staning with VPSI LON, handled by Silke, and managing I Pro III, followed by VIXEN (LEXI), handled by Sharon, but they had problems. especially on the drag. Finally came ROLF, handled by Brandi, a very unruly, disobedient shorthair. With testing complcted. dogs were let oul and training ensued in the field and al the pond ... until next year's fun weekend in the beautiful nonhem Sacramento Valley. Again many thanks to Anne and Gary. Va all come back, hear.

II EARTLAND CltA PTER SPRING TEST By Jim Montgo mery

The l'leanland Chapter of the WPGCA was e;o;eited again this year to hosllhe annual "Judges Semi· nar" in association with the spring hunt test. This year 's seminar did not just have regKmal attendance, but was truly an international event. In addition to having panicipants rrom 19 d ifferent states, we also had anendecs rrom Canada and New Zealand. Fonunately, th is year with OUf featured speaker. Dr. Ed Bailey, this became much more than an event for judges, as it expanded to be a true educational seminar ror everyone. It was a most rewarding experience as Dr. Bai ley shared with us extensive detai ls about the book he is currently wri ting featuring the training of the versat ile hunting dog.

Or. Bailey has agreed to Ylrite this book as a result o r being encouraged by many to share his vast knowledge and experience in Ihis area so that current and future dog O'ATlers, handlers, and "dog lovers" ha\'e a rererence based on years or involvement with our " rour legged hunting companions and ramily members. - He will be publiShing the book III the not-loo-<hstanl rulUrc and has also generously agreed to donate Its proceeds to the WPGCA.

No one has a morc in-depth knowledge of canine learning and training rrom blnh through adolescence than Dr. Bailey. With this book, he will be sharing personal insights.. proven training methods, tips, and general infornlat lon regarding how a dog grows, learns, and can be trained. His knowledge wi th the process through his study and hands-on experience. coupled with a genuine love of the out-of-doors and hunting. make an unbeatable combination ror him 10 be the aUlhor a book or Ihis nature.

During his presentat ion. Dr. Bailey spent some time covering the first two pans of the upcoming book. In the "Introduction and Purpose." he immedialcly begins educating us with many raclS about

dogs. Early in this sccrion we discover that a puppy actually begins learning ~ it is born, a concept he explained in detail. This fascinating fact is just one o f many that whets our appetite for what lies oh<od.

After explaining through the " Introduction and Pwposc" about the developmental aspects and various stages a dog goes through and how it actually learns, the book begins with the training phase, Chapter One, entitled "The Prc-school Training." From there it will assume a systematic approach through the dog's growth, development, and training with specific, easy-to-follow, proven methods for success. This book will be a tremcndous asset to the new dog owner undertaking his or her first training experience as well as the seasoned veteran who has raised and trained many dogs.

The exciting aspect of this seminar was having the opportunity for dialog with Dr. Bailey and the ability 10 ask questions and rcceive detailed explanations and answers. Also, having the access to personally exchange questions and Kleas during more casual times throughout the weekend made this a lfUly meaningful experience for everyone who attended.

In addition to having Dr. Bailey present, we were also delighted 10 have two other dedicated veterans of the WPGCA attend this weekend. WIlITCfl Webster (and his wife Helen) from California and Jack Oal1imore from Oregon both added greatly to the proceedings. Their willingness to share years of experience, coupled with Dr. Bailey's expertise, allowed anyone who wished to have the opportunity for one-on-one conversat ions to get insights into situations that many have experienced before.

The evening conc luded with the group devouring about 20 pizzas (we now have stock in the Pizza Hut in Baraboo) and many beverages while reviewing the events of the day and anticipating the tests of tomorrow. This enjoyable evening spread over the entire area o f the Campus Inn MOCel. including the mcc1ing room, the outside parking lot, and grass area where several new puppies mingled with older dogs as their exposure and socialization continued to expand.

Early on Saturday morning we gathered at the Mazomanie Wildlife Area for the hunt test. It was a beautiful morning highlighted by the tape playing of the traditional European Jaghom celebrating the hunl Following thili there wa..~ the individual introduction of people, family, locations, and dogs. In a rarity for the Heartland Chapter, there were only II dogs for testing this weekend, which allowed for a onc-day, Saturday only testing session. Eight Nalural Abil ity dogs ran in two groups, while the third group had one Intermediate and two O lder Dogs to test .

Although the getting to the water for the IOHT and OOHT was a challenge, the Natural Ability erews had plenty of fun at the ponds near the gathering pavilion. As usual, the watcr provides some of the more interesting aspects of the Icst as well as some of the most fun, especially wi th the NAT partici. pants. The sprawling fields with various typeS of cover at Mazomanie always provide ample area for fieldwork and all other aspectS of the non-water testing.

Once the day concluded, which was early for the Natural Ability dogs. handlers, and judges compared to the third group, there was ample time to prqlate for the evening gathering and no-host dinner at the Farm Kitchen restaurant. As usual, the family-style meal. serving several varieties of del icious food, provided plenty to eal for everyone.

As the meal concluded, chapter President Andy Yeast officially welcomed everyone and expressed the chapter's grat itude for the efforts put forth in the preparation for the weekend's activities. In addition to recognizing Dr. Bailey for his contribut ions through the outstanding seminar on Friday. special thanks were e", tended to John and Vivian I)i tlo, Stan and Lynn Sukup. Ken and Karen Hurtig, Jon and Judy Coil. and Sid and Brenda Siefken for all they do to make this event possible. There are also lIIany others who are invaluable in their contributions to the week.end. along with the presence of everyone who allends. cspecially those that test their dogs. Such people are what really make tests successful.

1llC evening continued as the Senior Judges for each group reviewed scores for the day's testing. Those detailed scores can be found elsewhere in this publication. Certainly with the number of dogs that prized during the NAT test. there is much anticipation about the next round when they reach the IOHT level. Congratulations and thanks to each handler and dog for participation in this important aspect of the elub testing program.

Following the test results. Jim Seibel, chainn:1n of the Breeding Commillee. gave a rcport on the breeding activity. Jim 's report included statistics 011 the six breedings that took and the resulting 30 puppies recently born. Jim thell had the all those attending who havc had breedings and raised litters incrod uce themselves and identify thei r kennel nalnes.

Ortg Hurtig outlined an important project he is heading up. A database has been developed in an at-

tempt to gather and catalog as much information as possible regarding the medical history of all Grif· fons and Fouseks associated with the club. Greg's need is for everyone who owns or has owned a Grif· fon or Fousek to complete a Medical History Form for each dog and send it to him for entry into the database. This fonn shook! be updated any time there is a health change with a dog. This database will provide invaluable information to the Breeding Committee as they continue 10 evaluate all aspects of health as a key factor in the breeding progmm.

A final piece of business was concluded when President Yeast made a plea for everyone 10 pay their annual membership ducs and update our chapter records. He also announced a donation from the chapter treasury was being made 10 the Mazomanie Wildlife Area Organization who allow us to conduct our test there whenever needed. It had been a few years since such a donation has been made to show our appreciation for their cooper.t!ion.

The evening concluded with the drawings for door prizes and the grand rame. President Yeast. in an effOl1 to bolster the chapter treasury. made people buy raffle tickets just to get into the door prize draw· ing. It was a first, but the Treasurer appreciates the gesture. After the "door prizes with a catch" were distributed, the drawing for the four main raffle items began. It was then it became apparent that we had ··Mr. Lucky" in aUendance at this spring test. Roger Tredway from Arkansas, Kansas had his tickct drawn for three oflhe four prizes! Fonumuely for evcryone else. he graciously declined two oflhe prizes and allowed anothcr name to be selected as the winners. Atler the dinner, many people lined up to asked Roger to buy them a lottery ticket.

In an unusual tum of events, there were no tests to be held on Sunday. Most people enjoyed sleeping in a bit, casual coffee, breakfast and conversation wi th old arK! ncw friends, and seeing fast-growing puppies romp with cach other before thcy lcft (or their new family deslinations. Then, most hit the road and headed home to arrive at a decent hour (or a change. Somc of us were $0 unaccustomed to this notcsts-on-Sunday schedule that wc circled Baraboo sevcrallimes in a caravan just to makc sure wc don'l get used to the early departure (rom the I-Ieanland Chapter test weekends.
