As Paul Hansen's exhibit with Vince Matulewich winds down, it is cause to reflect upon the delightful nature of Lost Sacred Disciplines Paul's provocative paintings, Vince's stellar photos, and the collaboration of two artists unafraid to allow each other to enrich and transform their respective art. The reception, with a film written by Paul, photographed by Vince, live music by Tye Dye Sky, and the aforementioned art, was an event to remember. The Guild used to be seen by some as a very traditional, conservative venue. No more. Bravo Paul! Bravo Vince!
Next up: Our 27th Annual Open Juried Show. Imagine the difficulty of receiving over 250 submissions and being asked to
pare the number down to about 105 (roughly 40% of the total). That was the first order of business faced by judges James Yarosh and Mark Ludak. That reality creates disappointment for many, and causes some to think of judging as a purely subjective endeavor. Subjectivity and bias do play a part, but with good judges, experienced in working with different mediums and having a track record of evaluating art, those factors are minimized. These judges were sought for these reasons. It is never pleasant when our work is not accepted into a show, but if you have been an active artist for some time, that eventually happens to you. What to do? You simply move forward to your next opportunity. Ultimately, no one defines you as an artist except you.
The reception for this exhibit is Sunday, October 6th, from 3:00-5:00 PM, with the awards ceremony around 4:00. With well
over $1000 in award monies, and several new categories, excitement continues to build. If history is any guide, our place will be packed. Keep in mind that we are permitted to use the parking lots of the realtor offices that flank our building on both sides.
Please note that members of New Jersey Chapter 22 of Floralia will each choose a work from our OJ show as inspiration for a
sculptural, floral design. The synchronicity between these creations and the original pieces is always apparent, and wonderful to behold. The Floralia reception is Sunday, October 13
th from 2:00-4:00 PM. Living art is precious, and does not last but a few days, so
make it a point to visit us during its run ( October 12th - October 15
th.)
Because of health issues with one of the three artists who were scheduled to exhibit at the Guild in November, we are altering
our plans and will display artwork by Associates and Exhibiting Members in the gallery. The theme will be, A Blast from the Past. Consider bringing some of your art that goes back in time or way back. Some of us are dinosaurs; perhaps we can go back to our Mesozoic era! What fun to reveal who we were and how far we have come. Receiving will be October 31
st from noon to 7:00 PM (for
the lobby show too), and the reception will be on November 3rd
from 3:00- 5:00 PM. We staged an Artists Materials/ Art Rummage Sale on September 22
nd from 10:00 – 3:00 on the grounds of the Guild, and
we believe that its success will push us to making it an annual event. The Guild made some money ($400+) while clearing out items that were stored and no longer needed. Those artists who rented spaces seemed generally happy as well, selling, trading, or giving away some of the items that they brought. Thanks go out everyone who participated, but especially to Donna Colasurdo, MaryAnn Goodwin, Liz Jacobelli, Mary Fitzsimmons, Bob O’Keefe, and Mary and Kurt Christensen. We could never have done this without your cooperation and hard work.
A shout goes out to MaryAnn Goodwin for organizing and participating in another garden clean up. We thank our volunteers: Mozelle Forman, Bob Novak, Lisa Franey, Liz Jacobelli and Rick Siciliano for helping to beautify and spruce up our grounds.
Finally, as mentioned last month, the Guild is hosting the Catalyst Academy two nights a week for students age 13 and up, and the Junior Catalyst Academy one night for children ages 7 through 12. Classes will have begun by the time you receive this. Area teachers, Kate Okeson, Kristen Lanfrank and Amy Lepping will provide an opportunity for art making, as well as creative design thinking. We are excited about this new partnership with long standing partners from Rumson Fair Haven High School. Kate and Kristen have enriched our gallery by their April students' shows. This seems to be a logical continuation of that, and allows us at the Guild to help further the development of young artists.
Applicants will need FIVE framed (if suitable) pieces of professionally presented artwork in their media category:
Flat Work – including acrylic, watercolor, oil, pencil, pastel, photography, mixed media, and printmaking
Sculpture – including wood, glass, ceramic, metal, and stone
Work will be judged on the following criteria:
Originality/Creativity: The work must be different and inventive, and not appear to be copied from other sources.
Submissions will be judged as a Portfolio with emphasis on a consistent, distinct style that looks like it was done by the same person. Submissions may show evidence of experimentation with materials and imagery, as well as an indication of risk-taking.
Composition/Design: All submissions must show that the artist has a strong understanding of composition, which is
defined as a thoughtful arrangement of art elements (color, texture, line, shape, space, and value) using the principles of design. The work should be commanding, with fresh visual impact, and have a sense of “flow” that is simultaneously controlled and organized around a strong center of interest.
Technique/Execution: The manner and skill with which the artist uses the tools and materials to achieve the chosen
effect must be consistent and well done. The artist must show a mastery of the media including color theory, perspective, the printing process, and Photoshop or HDR as applicable.
The artist must present all artwork in a professional manner. Frames and mats shall be clean, damage-free, and appropriate for the piece.

Guild of Creative Art Class Descriptions
Watercolor – Beginner through Advanced with Randy Mayer Randy’s Watercolor painting class is structured so that
students will learn the fundamental techniques and properties of the medium, to achieve a successful painting. Students will be working from photographs and/or still life subjects. Classes will begin with a short demonstration, followed by time for students to work on their paintings. There will also be a “Paint Along” available, showing step by step painting, for the students who are more comfortable learning in this way. Instruction will be personalized to suit individual needs and interests, and because classes are limited to only 8 students, each student will receive one on one time.
Drawing – Beginner through Advanced with Randy Mayer Beneath every great piece of art is a great drawing. Randy’s
drawing class will be structured to give you the fundamentals necessary to improve your skills and do your own “great drawing”. Whether you would like to be able to do a “vacation sketch”, a drawing for a painting or one to stand on its own, this is the class for you.
Mastering the Media of the Masters, Oil Painting with Sven Widen This class is a studio course in oil painting for
adults and students age twelve and older. Students will learn techniques, materials and substrates of classical, Old Masters, and contemporary oil painting, and will work from still life set ups, although working from a photo reference will be accommodated and used to its greatest benefit. The prime goal of this class is for the students to have a hands-on understanding and familiarity with the media, ultimately to find their own style and voice.
Guild Photographer’s Group This workshop will meet the second Tuesday of each month. Each meeting will explore a different
theme. This workshop is an interactive discussion and critique. Tuition is FREE to Guild members, $5.00 per session to non-members.
Oil Painting Landscapes and Still Life with Pratima Rao In this class on oil painting, students will learn to paint a
successful landscape or still life with oils in the studio. Understanding key concepts of oil painting such as composition and design, effects of light, color value and temperature, lost and found edges, as well as linear and atmospheric perspectives will be addressed. Students can use their plein air study and/or reference photographs to paint a landscape, seascape or still life of their choice.
Beginning Drawing with Karen Dooney Ever want to learn to draw or haven't drawn in years? This course will cover the
fundamentals of drawing including shading, composition and line. Behind many great works of art, abstraction or realism lays a strong drawing. No experience necessary. Open to adults and teens.
Pastel Impressionism with Karen Dooney Gain basic skills in two-dimensional artwork with pastels, a flexible opaque medium
that allows layering and building of color, much like oil paint. Class will focus on composition, negative shapes, and other fundamentals for beginners using colored photographs and still lives. All levels are welcome.
Drawing and Painting for Children, Teens, and Adults with Leslie Backlund Individual attention is given to
students of all levels and interests. Students learn drawing, composition and color theory while working on their own choice of subject matter. Leslie also offers a Portfolio Review class for teenagers who are preparing to be art majors in college and portfolio prep classes for young teens applying for high school art programs.
Framing Your Artwork Yourself with Hillary Binder-Klein The first session of this framing course covers the basics of
framing. The second class concentrates on the hinging technique of matting, and completing the framing process by wiring the piece correctly. Students will mat, frame and wire one of their own pieces.
Lyrical Abstract Expressionism with James Kent Lyrical Abstract Expressionism painting class begins its 22nd year in the fall
of 2019. This class teaches the non-representational, non-objective abstract expressionist painting style as pioneered by artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, James Brooks, Franz Kline, and others. Paintings are started with no preconceptions, with an emphasis on editing as the most important part of the process. Students work in acrylics. Painting time and a group critique is offered . (THIS CLASS IS NOT TAKING NEW STUDENTS AT THIS TIME)
Catalyst Academy with Kristen Lanfrank, Kate Okeson, and Amy Lepping The Catalyst Academy provides intensive, individual, and contemporary art instruction to help creative and innovative students focus and improve their personal art practice, as well as leverage their work in a portfolio or supplement in the competitive college application process. The Junior Academy enrolls students ages 7 through 12, while the Academy is for ages 13 and up. Email [email protected] for information.
