Building Australia’s best Hellenic and Greek Studies Program

Our AchievementsWith a proud tradition of community support of Greek language and culture at Charles Darwin University (CDU) for more than a decade, the CDU Foundation Guardians of Greek Language and Culture was established in 2012 with the goal of building Australia’s best Hellenic and Greek Studies program at CDU.

The program here at CDU is evidencing the great cultural and economic contribution made by Greek migrant families, influencing the growth and development of the region.

The following has been achieved at CDU with the support of the Guardians:

Hellenic and Greek Language and Culture Studies Program• Appointed A/Professor George Frazis full time to lead Hellenic and Greek

Studies at CDU.

• Delivering ongoing Greek language and culture lectures both combining personal instruction at Casuarina campus and on line, regular Greek poetry symposia and public lectures at the CDU Darwin campuses, and professional development training seminars for Greek Language.

• Delivering one of Australia’s most respected in-country Greek language and culture programs, with the program’s 13th consecutive year in 2019.

• Delivering post graduate studies and research opportunities, with supervisors from CDU and internationally renowned universities from around the world.

Visiting Academic Open Lectures Hosted at CDU and Symposium• His Excellency, Mr. Charalampos Dafaranos, the Ambassador of Greece, public

lecture on “The Philhellene Spirit: the soft power of Greece".

• Convener of Philosophy at Latrobe University, Dr George Vassilacopoulos, public lecture on “Migrants asserting their rights: The case of the Greek-Australian Unemployed Movement”.

• The inaugural symposium on Greek Culture where the visiting Greek academic address was given by Associate Professor Vasilia Kourtis-Kazoulli from the University of the Aegean.

• Guest lecturers Professor George Kanarakis of Charles Sturt University and Dr John Yannakis.

Accreditation by Greek Government as NT Examination Centre• Accredited by the Greek Government as the NT Examination “Centre” for

the Certificate of Attainment in Greek Language, and annually conducted the examinations under this accreditation.

Student Testimonials The 2018 Charles Darwin University in-country language program in Greece was an extremely eye opening and overall amazing experience. During this program we learned an incredible amount about many different aspects including the Greek language, culture and how modern western civilisations have been influenced by the ancient Greeks and including modern architecture and city designs.I loved this experience and recommend it to anyone who wants a better understanding of Greece and Hellenism.Thank you for the amazing experience, as I have learnt a lot from this trip and met wonderful people. This journey has been perfect and has benefited, improved and opened my eyes to what Greek culture really is, as I would have never done this type of learning.Students participating in 2018 CDU Greek in-country program
