INTELLIGENT SPEED-CONTROLLED PUMPS FOR HEATING SYSTEMS
GRUNDFOS MAGNA
The Grundfos MAGNA Amazingly adaptable
Intelligent circulator pumps
This brochure presents the Grundfos MAGNA circula-
tor pump range for buildings on any scale. The MAGNA
series consists of innovative, intelligent circulator
pumps designed around a permanent-magnet motor
that ensures maximum efficiency.
The intelligence of the MAGNA resides in the unique
AUTOADAPT function, which automatically sets the
pump to the most efficient performance curve at all
times. Combined with a design specifically aimed
at optimising energy efficiency, this has earned the
MAGNA series a class 'A' rating in the European
energy labelling scheme. All this makes the MAGNA
a key element in the Grundfos range of innovative
pump technology.

TheGrundfos MAGNA: Amazing variety
A full range of permanent-magnet motor circulatorsThe Grundfos MAGNA pumps are innovative, intelligent
circulator pumps designed around a permanent-magnet
motor that ensures maximum efficiency – a design pioneered
by Grundfos. With their combination of sheer strength and
unique benefits such as the AUTOADAPT function, the MAGNA
pumps have been very popular among consulting engineers,
contractors, and building owners since its introduction in
2001. Now, the range comprises 27 different sizes and models
to meet all circulation requirements.
Savings and safetyIt is easy to see why the MAGNA is so popular. It is reliable,
easy to install, and really smart. It automatically adapts its
performance to suit demand, so everyone – consultants,
installers, and end-users – can be confident that they use
the best circulator pump around. And it’s not just us saying
that: Impartial agencies also agree that the MAGNA range is
special. For example, every MAGNA model has an ‘A’ rating in
the European energy labelling scheme – a fact which clearly
demonstrates their remarkable efficiency.
For all projectsBy popular demand, Grundfos has steadily expanded the
MAGNA range to the point where it now boasts a total of 27
different models. You can enjoy the MAGNA benefits in sizes
ranging from the small 25–60 model up to the large 65–120
pump – pumps that can provide flows from as little as 1 m3/h
right up to 39 m3/h each.
You can explore the MAGNA range on the following pages. For
even more information, visit the Grundfos website or contact
us directly. We are always keen to talk MAGNA.

Threaded or fl ange connection
MAGNA pumps are available with threaded or
flange connections for easy installation into
new or existing systems.
Permanent-magnet rotor
The MAGNA pumps use a revolutionary
motor design where the rotor is based
on permanent-magnet technology,
generating greater energy savings than
any other speed-controlled circulator
pump.
Optimised hydraulics
The MAGNA pump housing and impeller are designed
to be a perfect match. Extensive 3-D testing and
simulations ensure that the hydraulics in the MAGNA
pumps are as efficient as possible – thereby reducing
energy consumption.
An inside look at the MAGNA rangeThe MAGNA pumps are the result of a development process
dedicated to creating a truly efficient circulator pump. The
design has been optimised with a view to reducing energy
consumption and making the product as smart as possible.
Nothing was left to chance: for example, sophisticated 3-D
design software and efficient flow simulation equipment
helped our engineers bring you the exceptional performance
that is the MAGNA hallmark. For the Grundfos MAGNA, only
one quality is good enough: the best.
Some of the features of the Grundfos MAGNA are briefly
described here. For more information, contact us.
In-slot winded stator
The in-slot winded stator has been specifically
developed to optimise pump efficiency.Air-cooled electronics
The sophisticated electronics behind the
MAGNA benefits are protected by air cooling,
ensuring reliable operation.
Plug-and-pump installation
Mains connection is established simply by
putting in the plug. And installation is so simple
that the MAGNA can quite accurately be called
“plug-and-pump” technology.
User-friendly interface
The MAGNA user interface is
simplicity itself. The operating
panel restricts itself to show-
ing only the most essential
performance parameters, mak-
ing it easy to read. It clearly
indicates the flow rate and the
operating level of the pump in
relation to maximum capacity.
And pump performance can
be adjusted manually with a
simple press of a button.

At start-up, a MAGNA pump operates with a lower differential pressure than other
comparable units (shown by the AUTOADAPT factory setting line).ADAPT factory setting line).ADAPT
As the flow increases, the pump pressure follows the line for the AUTOADAPT fac-ADAPT fac-ADAPT
tory setting until the pump operates on the maximum curve, continuing down-
wards until it reaches the required flow.
When the flow is subsequently reduced, the AUTOADAPT function ensures that the ADAPT function ensures that the ADAPT
operating profile does not simply return to the original curve – it sets a new, lower
pump speed (n new) that results in even greater energy savings!
Proportional-pressure control
Groundbreaking work by Grundfos led to the discovery of proportional-pressure
control. In units employing this principle, the differential pressure across the
pump is automatically adjusted to match the flow. When the flow falls, so does
the pressure required. This results in a correspondingly reduced load on the motor
– and reduced energy consumption. And things get even better when you add the
AUTOADAPT function.ADAPT function.ADAPT

Energy savings that go on and on
The Grundfos MAGNA: Amazingly adaptable
The AUTOADAPT function andwhat it does for youThe AUTOADAPT function is a unique Grundfos feature linked
to the permanent magnet motors used in the MAGNA range.
It was designed to bring real benefits to all stages of the
pump’s life: easy and accurate specification, easy installation,
efficient operation, and energy savings that go on and on.
Maximum effi ciency at all timeVery simply put, AUTOADAPT is an intelligent regulation func-
tion that keeps the MAGNA pump operating at peak efficien-
cy. It carries out regular proportional pressure adjustments
and automatically sets the pump operating profile to a more
efficient performance curve whenever possible. In effect, the
MAGNA pump learns what works best for your system – and
changes its settings accordingly.
With the MAGNA range, everybody winsIf you ever come in touch with a MAGNA pump, the AUTOADAPT
function has a benefit for you. It doesn’t matter whether you
are a pump specifier, an end-user, or an installer.
AUTOADAPT lets consulting engineers rest assured that the
MAGNA pumps meet performance specifications without
being oversized – or overpriced. They will always readjust their
setting to suit demand, ensuring minimum overall energy
consumption – but they are still ready to provide the neces-
sary flow at peak demand situations such as very cold days.
Installers benefit because in about 80% of cases, no subse-
quent manual adjustment is needed. They can quite liter-
ally install it, leave it, and forget it. And end-users need only
look at their electricity bills to see how the adaptability of
Grundfos MAGNA pumps brings substantial energy savings
year after year.

Energy labelling: an 'A' for MAGNA
Small sticker, big impact: Pump tech-
nology accounts for 20% of the world’s
annual electricity consumption, so ener-
gy-efficient products offer great scope
for savings. The energy labelling scheme
makes it easy to buy responsibly.
Energy labelling: top marks for MAGNAThe energy labelling scale, familiar from household applianc-
es since 1992, gives an easy overview of the MAGNA pumps’
annual energy consumption. The information is simple, but
make no mistake: the classifications are based on many com-
plicated calculations.
The energy efficiency is rated on a scale from A to G – A being
the most energy-efficient, G the least. The average pump
on the market today is rated D, but with the MAGNA series
Grundfos offers a complete range of circulator pumps rated A.
The difference is greater than you may think: A-rated pumps
consume up to 75% less energy than traditional standard
pumps. And of course every single MAGNA pump is rated A.

The MAGNA interface: Made for human beings
Simplicity based on careful researchAchieving simplicity can be quite a complicated process.
When designing the Grundfos MAGNA, for example, we set
up a team of software designers, industrial designers, and
anthropologists who used extensive research results to make
sure that the so-called Human-Machine-Interface was opti-
mised – in other words, that the pumps are easy to install and
operate. This attention to simplicity is evident everywhere
– for instance in the way the pumps communicate.
The control you really need. And no frills. The Grundfos MAGNA has the communication and control
features you need. No more, no less. For example, the operat-
ing panel clearly show the flow rate and the pump’s operating
level compared to its maximum capacity. And bus communi-
cation allows you to use MAGNA in any SCADA system – or
to benefit from the data collection features of GENIBus and
LONWorks.
Communication options/accessories
The R 100 remote control is a great tool for engineers and
maintenance staff. The handy unit gives easy access to
diagnostic information and general performance data.
Relay modules offer simple communication options, while
bus communication facilitates more advanced SCADA system
applications.
