NEW MEMBERS AND SPONSORS THIS LIONS YEAR IN C – 3
MEMBERSHIP
It looks like C – 3, YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY TO REACH THAT PLUS 20.
In fact, at the last reporting C-3, we are leading all zones in MD 19 in member-
ship growth. Let’s keep it that way, keep asking keep trying to recruit new
members.
The District goal is plus four, we are also getting really close to that. Last year
19 C was a plus 11. Let’s at least end this year with a plus double figures. If we
end up a plus again, it is two years in a row and that is a pattern. Governor Jan
goal is also a positive number, so let’s get three years in a row.
New Members this month:
Larry McCalley – Miles Moergeli
Ben Talbert and Brendan Jeffreys - Tom Burrill Auburn
Third Annual Diabetes Walk
On May 7, Saturday, the district had its third annual Diabetes walk. The event
was held at Bradley Park in Puyallup and was chaired by District Diabetes chair-
man John Herr. Looks like the, event raised around $1200 which most of it will
go to Diabetes Retinopathy. Most of the walkers were from the Sumner Lions
and guests. A special kind of water was available that Saturday, Kangen water,
More antioxidants and better PH balanced. Contact Sara Younger for in-
[email protected]. Thanks to all the Lions that walked and helped on
walk day

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
We are on a roll. Many parades are coming up. Your attendance would be appreci-
ated: June 4 – Shelton and University Place, July 4 – Tumwater, July 16 – Silverdale ,
July 30 - Olympia, August 20– Milton, August 27- Rainier and October 1 – Fife. Auburn
- Aug 13, and Auburn - Nov 5.
Wear a Centennial Shirt if you march. We will have a Centennial Banner to carry and
many signs to show off.
Make sure your club orders their shirts through Northwest Custom Apparel or Lion
Bob Johnson.
Now is the time to start planning your Legacy Project for your Centennial Celebration
in your clubs town. Visits are being started to clubs. Hope your club has an idea what
you want to do.
We have a possibility of other zones in our MD ordering shirts. Let’s hope so
Centennial Pins are in the making. These would be good to give to your new officers;
more on this later. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US – KEEP GROWLING - LET YOUR
LIGHT SHINE. Bob Johnson
STORMING THE SOUND Inspired by the Lion Centennial, the Federal Way Lions decided to add culture to their activities by partnering with a FW heritage group as docents and opening two historic cabins to visitors. The Storming the Sound with Salmon program is a part-nership between the City of Federal Way and the Federal Way School District which promotes environmental education. Students in twenty-six schools raise salmon. Finally, they release the salmon into Hylebos Creek. They spend a school day at West Hylebos Wetlands Park enjoying hands-on outdoor learning offered by sixteen organizations including the Federal Way Historical Society. Throughout the summer, Lions will help keep the cabins open to visitors.
BANNER PASSING 2016
A long standing tradition in District 19 C is an event called Banner Passing. That
is where the outgoing district officers and zone chairmen pass their banners to
the new incoming district officers and zone chairmen.
This next Lion’s year, the Banner Passing will take place from 3 PM to 6 PM on
Sunday, July 10th at Lions Park in Bremerton. The theme, Celebrating our Cen-
tennial, invites you to bring your family and lawn chairs to sit in, wear a Centen-
nial shirt, if you have one, and be prepared for fun and games. We will have a ca-
tered meal for $15. Our new Governor, Jan Weatherly, invites you and kick this
year off, playing with your Lions family as we begin our 100th Birthday year.
All you 19 C clubs, start making your plans to attend this years Banner Passing.
You know you can report this on your SAR’s as a Centennial Event.
BE THERE AND GET IN ON ALL THE FUN. Watch for the flyer next month.

Day at the Races -
On Sunday, May 22 over one hundred Lions got together at Emerald Downs for a Lions Day at the Races. There were folks from all over the Multi-ple District including :Sooke, BC, Aberdeen, Wenatchee and Bellingham. The event started with a tour of the horses and continued with lessons on betting the horses and watching the horses race.
The third race was named “The Lions Club Day at the Races Purse”. Lion Ron Bohlman of Auburn Noon encouraged people to bet on his own race horse- #2 “Ms. Harbor Boss” at 5-1 odds. Those who did were happy and we all cheered as Ms. Harbor Boss won the race.
Governor Al recognized a variety of Lions that were present with his Horse Hockey awards. Those awarded were: PZC Frank Pierce, Julia Wood, Rebecca Anderson, Taylor Gordon
Many of the ladies wore race day hats. About 30 ladies competed for winning hat. Lion Sheila Pierce’s Pink flowered hat was selected as best hat. Iris Young stole the show with her jockey outfit winning a prize for best outfit. ZC Bob Johnson won “Best Tie” and Lion Ron Bohlman won for Best Mustache. VDG Jan Weatherly won for best scarf. Many people won raffle prizes and everyone who bought a raffle ticket received a t-shirt.
Bugler Dan Harrington (possible future Auburn Noon Lion) entertained us with “The Lion Sleeps To-night on his beautiful shiny horn. We enjoyed a delicious buffet on the fourth floor in a great room with betting on one end and live feed video on the other end. It was just out the side door to watch the horses run. This was a really fun Multiple District event.
Special thanks to Ron Bohlman and ZC Bob Johnson for coordinating this SPECTACULAR EVENT. Thanks also to Angela Davis, Angela and Dan Hunt and Iris Young for their part. Thanks to the clubs that judged our contests. They were Auburn Noon, Fife, Olympia Host and Puyallup Valley.
We look forward to doing this again!!! Send any feedback to ZC Bob Johnson – [email protected].

Special Needs Youth Fishing Derby
Thank you Lions of Zone C-3 and supporters for your efforts at this years Special Needs Youth Fishing Der-
by. We had a beautiful day. The children and families had a wonderful time thanks to you.
While I own some publicity and communication failures, I was so proud of how Lions solved them quickly so
as not to impact our participants. I especially want to thank Ed Butler, Patty Sherman, Candee Smith, Ron
Manuel and Dorothy Burt for putting together concessions, water and snacks so quickly. I also want to thank
April Young and Bruce Emig for all those calls reaching out to past participants.
Now for some stats:
The Enumclaw Lions lost count at least 200 fish cleaned. We gave away almost a gross of stringers. We had
124 registrants and photographed 82 of them (none wearing the sweatshirt as best I can tell). We still had
some non-registrants, but most complied. We left about 30 still fishing with their own equipment, so who
knows what the total catch was. I would estimate close to 300 as many of those would stay to catch their
limit. We suffered some equipment casualties, and should just focus on closed reels in the future as open
reels had a much higher tangle rate. Thank you for our expert riggers who worked their fingers to the bone
with the constant and late flow of participants.
Thank you all for your tired feet and sunburned faces. We recorded Lions volunteers Fed. Way 2, Sumner
4, Kent 6, Bonney Lake 8, Auburn 14, Enumclaw 1 but I know there were at least 4-5! So a few missed the
sign-in.
Columbia bank’s VP Kathy Mendiola gave away treats and got a little time to fish with a grandson (who was
very well behaved and very busy!) . I was nice to have our sponsor see the event live.
None of this could have happened without the great support we got from the city of Auburn from the mayor, and parks and recreation staff! They were amazing. We also thank our Clean-up Support the week-
end prior: Cub Scout Pack 432, Pack 560, and Scout Troop 401 for help getting the park ready for the
event. This makes the fishing possible. The fish were hungry thanks to WA DF&W and the Puyallup Hatch-
ery. Kellogg’s snacks and all the worms from Work and Outdoor Sports were handed out. And Patrick
brought good weather again.
This link shares the photos from the April 23, 2016 Auburn Clean Sweep, and the 4-30-2016 Lions District-
19C, Zone C-3 Special Needs Youth Fishing Derby. I still some more to get from Stephen Crowell. I have
temporarily shared what I have as ―public" to allow you access to download those you want for Lions Club
newsletters, Facebook pages etc. While we have permission to use children’s photos for publicity, please be
considerate and conscious or appropriate use. There are some wonderful photos here. If you took some
that day, please email them to me or post in a manner I can download to add to these.
https://plus.google.com/u/0/111570654930289974396/posts Please use a few of these pictures for your brag
boards, websites, and other publicity.
Thank you once again for a splendid day.

―THE STREET PEOPLE‖
The Street People
With no place to go,
Each one has a story,
A chance for our love to show;
Each person is a unique soul,
Who is part of the down and out?
God has called us one by one,
That’s what we’re all about;
Looking into the heart of man,
With compassion in our soul,
To give others a helping hand,
Giving encouragement to make them whole;
These Street People are fellow human beings,
Crying out to us to be seen,
Isn’t there something we can do?
To give them hope to dream?
We may never know the impact,
Of what we say or do,
So we will choose to do something,
To help them carry through!
We shall refuse to look the other way,
But will look each one in the face,
And do, or say, something kind,
As fellow travelers of the human race.
