TESTIMONIES!
Vladimir Alcasid, Executive Vice President
DLSU Outdoor Club is the only organization
where one will learn to go outside of their comfort
zones, discover oneself, and grow as matured
individuals that care for the nature and environment.
Away from the usual city life - stressful, polluted,
congested, but with all the comforts and luxuries of life
- this org breaks out from the mainstream and gives
opportunity for everyone to enjoy outdoors, meet new
friends, and have the adventure of a lifetime. Being
carefree and having such spontaneity, every trip has
its own different exciting story to share. DLSU Outdoor
Club is more than an organization, it is life changing.
Laura Cua, Executive Secretary
Its great to live a life full of passion andadventure. In DLSU Outdoor Club, I am able to do
exactly that. The unique experiences I gained racked

DLSU Outdoor Club was the first org that I've
joined and it will be my one and only org till the end of
time. The leadership program really help build up mypassion and love toward Mother Nature. This Club
allowed me to interact with different kinds of people,
as a result I realized that I am not alone in this world
and there is definitely unity in diversity. :)
Vic Chan, VP Activities
There are no dull moments in this
org. The people are great and the
adventures are awesome. This is the only org
that will take you to greater heights, both
figuratively and literally. Here in The De La
Salle University Outdoor Club we live for
adventure.
Nacey Li, AVP Finance
I never thought that joining the DLSU
Outdoor Club would be one of the best decisions
I've ever made in my college life. The hikes, beach,
and other outdoor activities I've attended not only
tested my limits but also granted me more friends
and experiences. There was never a boring moment
in the activities and when I'm with the members.
Even in school, the people in Outdoor Club continue
to joke and help each other out.

GULUGOD CLIMB
THE BABOY CLIMB by

DLSU OC x SMS
COOL.
EPIC.DLSU OC.
Gulugod Baboy is a mountain with adistinguishing peak that looks like a pig
spine, hence the name of the mountain.
This is commonly the first destination of OC
because it is one of the most sulit climbs in
terms of the satisfaction to effort ratio. Let
me elaborate!
We left DLSU at around 8:00 am and got to
the jump off at around lunchtime. Beforewe started hiking, we first enjoyed the
flavors of local food at the base of the
mountain for a very reasonable price. After
some introductions, an icebreaker and
some stretching, we begun embarking on a
journey which for the first timers, was a great
tribulation.

Mountain PESTO PASTAYoull need:
!2 packs Clara Ole Cheesy Pesto!Pasta Sauce
!400-500 grams pasta
!1 tbsp olive oil
!1 tbsp chopped garlic
!2 cans tuna (in water/brine)
!Salt (to taste)
!Sliced olives, cashew nuts,
!Parmesan Cheese (optional)
Instructions:Cook pasta until al dente. Drain and
set aside. Drizzle olive oil in pan and
saut garlic. Add tuna and salt. Simmer
for a few minutes. Pour Clara Ole Cheesy
pesto sauce. Let it simmer for a few more
minutes. Pour over cooked pasta.
Some enjoyed the trail itself and the company
of fellow nature lovers while some cried on
the way to the summit. Some also enjoyed the
local ice candy that can be bought halfway
through the top. After about 4 hours, the tail
finally caught up with the rest of the group
where they were welcomed by the breath
taking view of the Anilao coastline, a few
islands, the faint silhouette of Mindoro and the
orange Sun, setting on the horizon. We could
feel the slow decline of temperature in the
mountain so we started setting camp and
preparing dinner. After which, we had an
amusing socials where the 40+ participants
got to know each other. We slept under the
clear view of the stars in the vastness MilkyWay. Fast forward. After enjoying the sunrise
and breakfast and after 3 hours of descent,
we finished off with a refreshing swim in the
clear waters of the beach at the foot of the
mountain. We showered and started heading
back to manila at around sunset were we
regained all the calories we have lost by
stuffing ourselves with unlimited rice at Mang
Inasals.
The trail, the beautiful view, the majestic
sunset, the wide campsite, the beach and of
course the company makes Gulugod Baboy
one of the most sulit trips of the year.

Super Happy Outdoor Trip Spectacular! Officers x Cubs
S.H.O.T.S.By: Stephanie Bernardo
Did you knowthat we call
our junior
officers Cubs?
This morningI woke up, drank my
coffee, went to school, went back
home, ate dinner, went to bedI did
the same thing yesterday. Its not just
me though; people actually do the
same thing every day. After all, life is a
cycle. Sometimes, when in luck, weget to experience something new in a
daythat day when we could use the
words my and first time in one
sentence.
As for me, a weekend spent in
AMBiodiversity Farm gave me the
reason to use those words
togetherNot in one sentence, but in
ten.

It was my first time to:
1. Go mud sliding.
2. Eat a guava fruit straight from the tree.
3. Hear scary stories with a dusky jungle just
behind my back.
4. Trek barefoot through the mud.
5. Watch fireflies light the dark forest like fairies.
6. Stand under the chilly rain and notcare at all.
7. Lay my back on a big white rock and let the
mountain stream cleanse my mind.
8. Play like a kid again after such a long long time.
9. Spend a night with awesome people you only metless than 24 hours ago
10. As if you guys have been best friends since
forever.
What about you? When was the last time youve
done something new? A clich but really, you only
live once. So dont let go of chances, take risks, and
make this day a reason for you to use
those wordstogether.
Oh. And please make that eleven.
It was also my first time to become part
of a family formed over a single
weekend by such diverse people with
one passion in adventure.
Welcome to DLSU Outdoor Club!

A fulfilling and meaningful life is created
through service to others. I believe that doing
community service grounds my values and
morals, and helps me make the most of my life.
ASPIRE is a yearlong tie-up activity of 9
organizations, which Outdoor Club is part of. It
teaches students from Grade 1 to 3 subjects
such as Geography, Math, Science, Art, English
and Sports. This serves as a weekly tutorials
class to these kids, to practice what they
learned in school and raise their concerns,
especially those who have difficulty with their
subjects. We properly discussed to them the
lessons and gave them some advices to strive
more in their studies.
I am very much thankful that we were
given this kind of opportunity, a chance to
impart our knowledge and in return we
learned something from them. Personally, I
learned to extend my patience in every

activity we had because these kids are very much
energetic and are vulnerable to various distractions.
Besides, together with Kean, my co-project
head, we were able to handle three Larong Pinoy
sessions... For the first two sessions, we had patintero,
tumbang preso, luksong tinik, and a lot more. Ourmain goal here is to promote camaraderie, and
sportsmanship, and teamwork to these kids.
Spiced up Corned BeefYoull need:
!1 can of corned beef
!3 spoons of Worcestershire Sauce
!Dried Pepper Flakes
!Oil
Instructions: Mix everything in a cooking pan and
cook.
Ta-da! Corned Beef, Outdoor Club Style!
They learned that
everyone deserves to be encouraged and
cheered on. We guided them to do their
best, have a positive outlook and take pride
in themselves and their actions. On the last
session, we brought them to Manila Zoo. The
warm smiles on their faces makes me feel
that indeed this whole ASPIRE experience is
priceless. To COSCA personnel, kids, parents, barangay officers and to all my co-
volunteers thank you for your time and effort
because without your constant support,
ASPIRE would not have been this successful.
Kudos Team!

Each of the activities focused on
developing the different skills of the
officers and cubs so that they could
harmoniously work together. Though
competitiveness in some of the
participants sparked a few issues in
the games we were able to push
through the setbacks by
communicating and addressing
each concern.
On top of the rigorous physical
activities, we also had more
emotional reflective sessions that
focused on personality-building and
friendship-bonding discussions. Our
group sharing activities gave us the
awesome opportunity to break
through each individuals shell and
get to know each other more. We
also had a talent show which was
one of the highlights of the
teambuilding!
Philip Sanctuarys relaxing natural
ambience, wild mudslides, and
round-trip zip lines capped off
another great teambuilding! Until

MOUNT BANOI
RETREAT CLIMBB Ste h Liao
When one hears the word retreat, it is usually associated with silence,
meditation, and prayer. What better place can you hold a retreat than in the
mountains? Last October 6-7, 2012, DLSU had its first ever retreat climb in Mt.
Banoi, Laguna. Coincidentally, this was also OCs exploratory climb to the said
mountain, marking two firsts for the organization. Mt. Banoi was the chosen
venue for this event due to it being less congested compared to other more
popular mountains such as Mt. Maculot or Mt. Gulugod Baboy. No one really
knew what to expect from the retreat, and what was in store for the
participants.
There were ten participants for the
climb, mostly officers of DLSU OC.
Two members from LSPO
accompanied us, as theyfacilitated the retreat. Having this
intimate group suited the
objectives of this event, it would
help preserve the solemnity of the
retreat.

Since none of the us have been to
this mountain, we only relied on
research, and what locals said
about the trail. Some were nervous,
others were excited. According to
the locals, an estimated time of 3-4
hours would suffice to reach the
summit. But for Outdoor Club, it
took a grueling 5 hours of walking,
trekking and hiking to finally
conquer Mt. Banoi. By the time we
arrived at the campsite, we were
greeted by the setting sun andwere awed at natures beauty.
The view at the top was
breathtaking. Mt. Banoi truly
suited this retreat climb, as there
were no other hikers in sight. Only
peace, serenity and calmnessaccompanied the group that
weekend. Instead of the usual
socials we do during OC hikes,
we reflected and shared stories
led by the LSPO representatives.
As all of us hiked down the next
day, we not only gained new
memories, but also insight,
wisdom and lessons which can
only be found in this type of
experience Outdoor Club can
offer.

Mt.
ManabuClimb
By Kenneth Ramos
There are mountains that are tough for a hike and there are mountains that are a breeze
for a hike as well. Mt. Manabu is part of the latter. The difficultys only set at 2/9 with a trail
class of 1-2; this minor climb is a great way to introduce beginners to mountaineering. The
trails short, although muddy (and we really mean muddy so expect a lot of slipping or
sliding whichever happens to you first). Its a good thing that the house near the jump-off
offers to clean your shoes for 10 pesos. Not bad since they also have shower rooms for
you to cleanse yourself after the hike. One of the main attractions of Mount Manabu
would be Mang Piryings hut who sells kapeng barako to the hikers along the trail. Whats
great about Mang Pirying is that hes so friendly to the
hikers with the way he talks like hes been your neighbour
for decades. The summit is
nice since theres a big
white cross on it. Mount
Manabu is a fun place for
a hike and if we ever get a
chance to go back there,
we could give Mang Pirying
a tarp since hes awesome.

THE SURFVIVOR SERIESZambales Baler La Union
Stoked. Pure awesomeness.
Surfing at The Circle
Hostel, ZAMBALESSurfvivor 1 by Steph Liao
Zambales, the most convenient place for sun, sand and,
most importantly, surf!
A mere 3hour bus ride from Manila, Zambales has always
been DLSU Outdoor Club's go-to surf spot. Its the first surf
trip of the year and everyone was stoked. We left Manila
bright and early to make the most of our surf weekend.
We stayed at The Circle Hostel, a totally new experience
for us. Even though there was a bit of rain, we headed
directly to the beach after dropping off our stuff at the
hostel. We swam and surfed to our hearts' content. Weslept in hammocks instead of beds. The sway lulled us to
sleep after a long day of riding the waves.

BALER with ENGLICOM
Surfvivor 2
Some say they are young, wild, and freeI say: We are
young, wild, and stoked!
Its true when people say a lot of things could happen in a
year but believe me when I say more than a lotcould
happen in a matter of 48 hours.
DLSU South Gate, 10 PM. That was where it all started. We
were all cranky about how hot it was. Little did we know an
epic adventure was just ahead of us.
By 11 PM, we were off to catch a 12 midnight bus toCabanatuan City. After a jeep ride, walking down the eerie
streets of Manila, and a serious mad highway crossing, we
finally reached Pasay Bus Terminal only to find out the first
trip to Nueva Ecija wont be until 2 in the morning. (I wasnt
kidding when I said epic adventure).Nobody was patient
enough to wait for two hours so we decided to take a bus to
Cubao Bus Terminal. Luckily, we were able to get an early
trip. At 3:30 AM, a starry sky welcomed us to Santa Rosa,
Nueva Ecija.
After another 4 hours of travel via private vans (and a 40-peso breakfast at the Rolling Stores. Im talking legit food
here, guys. Kanin and ulam. 40 pesos. Legit.), we finally
reached Aliya Surf Camp. FINALLY. Hello, Baler!
With no sleep, we were off to a day full of uncertaintyand
excitement. First on the list: River Trekking.
A mini race between 9 tricycles brought us to the start of our
trek! Of course, we didnt fail to cheer on our Kuya Tric
drivers!
It was a 30-minute trek to Balers Mother Falls. Yup. Short
amount of time. But try stepping on big slippery stones and
crossing a raging thigh-high river

Thought youd like to know ! But anyway, We all sighed
when we reached the end. No, not because of exhaustion.
It was because the sight was pure magic done by nature. A
place from another world greeted us, Welcome, children!
Oh! And nothing beats an ice-cold dip in the water under
the blazing sun! Two thumbs up.
It was already past lunchtime when we got back to the surf
camp. We were all hungry from the trek and the long bumpy
tricycle ride but it was nothing after experiencing the beauty
of Ditumabo Falls. *insert another sigh here*
Too bad we werent able to surf that afternoon because the
waves were too big. But that didnt stop us from having
fun. Who said you can only catch waves on a surfboard?
It wasnt long until the skies started to dim. With growling
tummies (filled with seawater), we braved the pitch-black
beach to have dinner at Bayler Restaurant. It was a buffet of
good food, stories, and laughter.
Sunday morning (rain wasnt falling)came and the waveswere perfect for beginners like us. And I have to say, its true
when they say that every ride is a different experience.
We had lunch at a local restaurant and seriously, nothing
could beat a 150-peso lunch buffet after a morning of
paddling and riding waves.
Hours later, we were all packed up. But no one was ready to
leave yet. The place was wonderful. It was awesome. It was
love. But like they say any place is just as good as the
people youre with.
We might have welcomed our Monday mornings with sore
bodies and tan faces but with all the happy memories that
weve earned form that short amount of time, I would never
think twice about having the same exact weekend all over
again.

LA UNION with YES
Surfvivor 3By Steph Liao
La Union was the last destination in our Surfvivor series
this academic year, it was also our first ever tie-up with
DLSU YES (Young Entrepreneurs Society).
We left Manila at 2:30 in the morning and after a 7-hour
bus ride we finally reached San Juan, La Union!
The weather was great, the sun was out; you could
hear the waves and smell the ocean. Everyone was
excited to surf so we dropped off our stuff at The CircleHostel, got changed for the beach and off we went!
We surfed in batches and explored the beach. Wesubmerged ourselves in surfer culture where the goal
was to catch as many waves and make as many
friends as you can. We laughed, surfed, played, talked
and bonded while basking in the glory of the sun and
the enchanting beauty of our surroundings. On this trip,
there was no such thing as strangers.
We were unanimous in deciding that we were inheaven that weekend. From the proud sunrises to the
romantic sunsets, the melodic crash of waves and the
silent calm of the ocean, it all became one with us. Our
senses reveled in the glory of Mother Nature. There
were no worries and we couldnt imagine ever havingany ever again. As long as there was sun, sand, surf,
and food, we were happy.
Also, it was such a great opportunity for the participants
of both organizations because we were able to meetand bond with the owners of The Circle Hostel, Ziggieand Raf who were not only entrepreneurs but also
surfers themselves! They are living proof that doing what
you love will not only make you successful, but more
importantly, it will make you happy.
This activity accomplished more than just uniting thetwo organizations, or getting people interested in
surfing. We brought them to paradise.

2NDANNUAL
FRIENDSHIP CLIMB
By Jason Sim
The 2ndannual DLSU Outdoor Club
and Loyola Mountaineers Friendship Climb was
held at Mt Pulag, Benguet. Composed of 20 participants
from both organizations, we climbed the highest peak in Luzon with great
camaraderie and learned a lot from the experiences of both parties. The
adventure started with a 6-hour bus ride from Cubao to Baguio then
followed by a 2 hour jeep ride to the jump-off
of Mt Pulag. Regardless of the long and
bumpy rides, fun and excitement never left
the group as it served as the official get to
know and bonding time of the two
organizations. After lunch, we started to hike
up via Ambangeg Trail., destination: Akiki
Campsite. Groups were formed with 3 members
from both organizations to ensure that no one
will be separated fro the group.

The majestic Mt. Pulag was the
perfect venue for the friendship climb for its
scenery and beauty. Mt. Pulag really brings
you to the playground of the gods andurges you to experience the sea of clouds
that would welcome you upon reaching the
summit. The temperature and weather was
great! Although not as cold as the -4 degree
temperature of the 1st annual friendship
climb, we experienced a perfect 10-degree
temperature which allowed us to socialize
with each other and share stories, pictures
and insights. Mt. Pulag really is one of the
most wonderful spots in the Philippines and is
much recommended for all hikers from
beginners to experts! Experience Mt. Pulags

Total odd:
More evens: YOU'RE A SOUL SURFER!You're carefree, spirited, and you like
doingwell probably nothing but lay on a
swing or under a beach umbrella. Just
kidding. Surfers say they love their sport
because every wave is a different
experiencelike them, you like the
unexpected. You think little insects are
creepy (ish), but you're not afraid of getting
your knees scratched. You're laid-back AND
if you can, youll live life like a big party.
More odds:A MOUNTAIN DAREDEVIL.One thing is for sure: You like being
challenged. You love challenges! You'rehardcore and you might even think like a
platoon head sometimes. No scratch that. I
don't think you think like that. Or maybe you
do. But anyway, mountain daredevils like the
extremes. YOU like the extremes but you also
like things simple. You may have to have a
to-do list but you're also flexible. And most of
all, you believe in the strength that you
possess.

MAGICAL MYSTICAL
CRISTOBAL
The lloweenClimb
It was my third time to climb the
Devils Mountain. I was already
bracing myself for the steep trail andslightly-horror-movie-esque-
surroundings the week before the hike.
To my surprise, at 8am on the awaited
day, there were a large number of OC
members (32 according to the GALS)
smiling and excitedly anticipating our
departure, and another group of 12
would be following in the evening. All Icould think was, tonight, we dine in
hell.
We all got on the bus until we reached
San Pablo, where 2 jeepneys and
Kuya Christian (our regular guide on
Cristobal trips) awaited us. We hopped
onto the jeeps and the drive began.
We bonded on the jeepneys, bonding
and playing games. Finally, we were
at the dropped off at the jump off...
NOT. It was the spiraling cement road
that would lead to the jump off.

to be done.
So we endured the light rain and powered
through. We were exhausted before we even
started, but we are strong! We trekked for
6hours through sporadic rain and steep
slippery trails as scary woods surrounded us.
Hours of challenging terrain, until we finally
reached the campsite. It was the first time we
were camping in the crater so it was a new
experience for me.
We set up camp and the temperature
began to drop. We bundled ourselves in
jackets and whatever else we could block
the cold with and it was finally cooking
dinner time! Carbonara! Pork sinigang! Rice!
We laughed and talked and gathered
around as some of us cooked. We then ate
until we were full then we sought shelter from
the rain into our tents.
As the night went on the rain poured and our tents began to flood, we sought for sleep
and worried for our friends that were hiking the mountain in the storm.
What is that sound? It is our companions! Oh, let us rejoice! They have arrived safe and wet
and with MORE FOOD. We ate a bit and slept in the lakes that used to be our tents.
As soon as there was daylight, we got up and packing while we shivered in our wet
clothes. The rain still persisted but we decided there was a greater chance of getting
warm at the jump off than at the campsite. Lo and behold, as we descended, the rain
started to let up and the sun started smiling upon us. By the time we got to the jump off,
we were sufficiently dry and extremely exhausted.
It was quite the experience for everyone. A challenge we overcame together. It
strengthened our bond and reminded us good mountaineers are prepared for everything!

Anawangin Outdoor
Photography with MOO MEDIA
Twas a weekend worth remembering and
undeniably an adventure like no other! A
November weekend full of fun, chill and
excitement on another part of the Z land
you should have not missed!
On a remote and secluded island, with no
electricity and hundreds of kilometersaway from the city, 28 people were
captivated by Outdoor Club and
MooMedia on November 10-11, 2012 at
Anawangin, Zambales. This is the first tie-up
of Outdoor Club and MooMedia featuring
Outdoor Photography.
MooMedias guest speaker, Mr. Aldrich Lim,
a freelance photographer and a graduate
of De La Salle College of Saint Benilde,
taught us the basics of Photography
outdoors and showed some tips and tricks
on how to have a great picture using any
camera and how to have a splendid
capture of any scenery.

We were truly mesmerized by the
awaiting and breath-taking beauty of the
crescent-shaped island of Anawangin
Cove. We also enjoyed the crystal waters
and pristine sands of Anawangin like itwas already summer.
Unexpected and unwanted spontaneous
events sometimes occur, especially when
you are outdoors. We werent able to go
to the cave near the cove (because it
was far beyond the coast), climb the hill
(because there had been barricades
before the hill), and visit the 222-year-old
Faro de Punta Capones (Capones
Lighthouse because it was low tide that
afternoon when we went there). We went
the bone-shaped Capones Island the
following day. The locals said that it will
take 4 hours to climb the mountain going
to the lighthouse, so we continued our
beach-ing on that island instead.
But nonetheless, we were awed by the
clear skies, beautiful sunset, countless
stars, and continuous meteor shower;
refreshed by the breeze of the cool wind,
porous sand of the beach, alluring splash
of the waves, and green pine trees of
nature; enjoyed the beach want-to-sawa
and especially, had a very good time
with each others company during the
whole trip. We played card games underthe dark with just headlights, ate liempo
with minerals (if you know what I mean),
and gained new friends. We also shared
stories by the beach and another around
the bonfire, and some of us even leaped
over the bonfire. We really felt trouble-free
- like were on vacation.
