In two home games this past week, the Tribune Jackrabbits boys’ team lost to Syracuse 48-74 on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and then beat Deerfield 57-28 at a homecoming game on Friday, Feb. 14. There was a major contrast between the two games. Against Syracuse the Jackrabbits were not back to their level of play that they had in the NWKL league tournament. On Friday against Deerfield, the Jackrabbits were back on track with outstanding team play. “After the Deerfield game, it doesn’t matter who we line up with in post- season play,” remarked Tribune coach Josh Gooch. “We are back to the level we played against St. Francis in the tournament. It started with the focus and energy we had in the locker room. I knew that we had the energy and excellence that we haven’t had in a while. We can tie for the NWKL regular season league title if we beat St. Francis.” Against Syracuse the Jackrabbits couldn’t hit in the first quarter and were bothered by the Bulldogs press. Fabel Yanez opened the game with a three but the Jackrabbits trailed 7-17 after the first quarter. Jaxson Brandl found his shooting touch in the second quarter with 11 points, but the Jackrabbits trailed 20-32 at the half. Jaxson continued to hit in the third and fourth quarters with 21 second half points, but the rest of the team contributed only 7 second half points in the 48-74 loss. The Jackrabbits had 33 turnovers and shot only 14% from the 3-point range. “Syracuse played one of their better games,” remarked coach Gooch. “They shot the ball really well hitting 60% from the field, and we didn’t do ourselves any favors with our 33 turnovers. They had balanced scoring and we couldn’t focus on just one or two players. “We didn’t get any shots from the outside. Their man-to-man defense didn’t give us many open looks.” The Tribune JV team lost their game to the Bulldogs 66-71. Against Deerfield the whole team contributed to the win. Alvero Bello- Marabe led the Tribune first quarter scoring with 9 points. Jaxson contributed 6 and Fabel hit a 3 for a 18- 11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Cade Mangan hit a second quarter 3 and Jaxson hit 10 second quarter points for a 31-22 lead at the half. The Jackrabbits completely dominated the second half out scoring the Bulldogs 26- 6. “It started with defense and rebounding,” remarked coach Gooch. “It was our best rebounding game. We executed well on defense and didn’t give them any easy shots. “Everybody played hard and it looked like they had fun from the beginning. Before the game, I told them that our post-season starts tonight.” The Jackrabbits out rebounded the Spartans 46- 22. Alvero led on the boards with 10 rebounds. Fabel and Jacob Miller both had 7 and Jaxson 6. The Jackrabbits will finish their regular season play with games at Weskan on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and at Atwood on Friday, Feb. 21. The teams assigned to the 1A regional at Tribune are St.Francis currently at 11-5, Brewster/Triplains at 11-7, Weskan at 11-7, Tribune at 10-8, Bird City at 6-11 and Sharon Springs at 6-11.
