Neve Harms Meritorious Service to Sports Award Winner:MICK DONAHUEAs a man devoted to sports, Mick Donahue contributed an essential (and sometimesunderappreciated) service to organized sports in Peoria for decades. His passion forathletics began during his youth as a participant in the Salvation Army Junior LeagueTournament and Proctor Center Basketball League. In the early 50s Mick played onthe baseball team at Peoria Manual High School. After graduating from Manual, hewas a player/manager on the LeTourneau-Westinghouse team in the venerable IndustrialLeague, one of the nation’s top amateur sports organizations at the time.

Mick spent much of his life coaching, organizing and officiating youth sports in thearea, especially baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball. He volunteered as a coachfrom 1957-72 for the St. Boniface Mustangs. Additionally he coached numerous LittleLeague and Pony League teams.

Over the next several decades, he volunteered thousands of hours organizing andadministering officials for various league play in the community Beginning in 1972, hesupervised adult softball and basketball leagues for the Peoria Park District. He alsoscheduled officials/umpires for the area’s catholic grade schools as well as manybasketball, baseball, and softball games for the Peoria Public Schools. In his over 30

years with the Peoria Park District, Mick trained, assigned, and supervised officials for adult softball games for leagues at PeoriaStadium and Sterling school. He organized a force of volunteer basketball officials for the Prairie State Games.

Even after his passing in 2011, his legacy of service continued to have a positive impact for a charitable cause. As a tribute andacknowledgement of his decades of dedication to local softball leagues, a “Mick Donahue Memorial Tournament” was held inAugust of 2013 on the park district diamonds near Peoria Stadium. Many teams participated and many other individuals, including umpires, volunteered their services. Proceeds from the successful event were donated to the PKD (Polycystic KidneyDisease) Foundation, a disease being fought by his granddaughter. Concurrent with the tournament, a park bench was dedicatednear the large diamond near Peoria Stadium. e small plaque affixed to the bench, reads, “In Memory of Mick Donahue for hisdedication to softball and the Peoria Park District.”

TOM GILLESBASEBALL Tom’s outstanding baseball career was highlighted byMajor League baseball appearances as a pitcher withthe Toronto Blue Jays. He was the winning pitcher inhis first outing with the Jays, his only decision in theBig Leagues.

Gilles was an outstanding athlete at Bergan HighSchool (merged with Peoria AOL/Spalding to become

Peoria Notre Dame in 1988). He was selected to All-Conference basketballand baseball teams. He was named All-State in both sports in 1980, hissenior year. Tom was a star on the 1980 Bergan Basketball Team (GPSHOFclass of 2010) that placed 2nd in the IHSA Class A State Tournament.Arguably, the most memorable moment in Bergan’s basketball historyoccurred during the tournament when his steal and resulting “buzzerbeating” layup gave the Trojans a thrilling 56-55 win over Sterling Newmanin the Moline Super-Sectional propelling Bergan to the quarterfinals. Tomwas selected to the All-Tournament 1st Team. One of the team’s assistantcoaches, Jim Carlson, remembers Tom this way, “Tom was a special athlete,a leader, maybe the best to ever compete in any sport at Bergan High Schoolin its 25 year history!”

After Bergan, Gilles continued his baseball career at Indiana State Universityin Terre Haute, Indiana, playing for the Sycamores from 1981-85. As afreshman and sophomore, he both played as a position player and reliefpitcher. His 3.22 earned run average in 1981 was the lowest among all pitchers. Tom was strictly a position player in his final twoyears, playing as a regular on ISU teams that won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championships in each season. Inthe summer of 1983 he was selected as a Central Illinois Collegiate League All-Star. Soon after his college career, he attempted toland a spot on the USA Baseball Team’s 30-man roster that would compete in the 1984 Olympic Games. After making thepreliminary roster against nationwide competition, he narrowly missed being named to the final roster.

Tom signed his first professional contract with the New York Yankees as a 47th round pick in the 1984 draft. He played first andthird base his first two seasons in the Yankees organization. He was converted to pitching in 1987 and hurled as a relief pitcher thenext five seasons at Appleton, Orlando, Kenosha, Syracuse, and Knoxville, in the Royals, Twins, and Blue Jays organizations. Hecompiled a minor league won/loss record of 22-16 with 35 games saved and 372 innings pitched. After his playing days, he sharedhis professional experience by coaching high school and college players.

JOHN GROSSBASKETBALL COACHTo be inducted into the GPSHOF while continuingyour career in coaching, requires some serious“credentials.” John Gross’s career in coaching highschool girls basketball certainly meets that criteria. Atthe time of his selection into the Hall, he had coachednearly 1,000 games, and his teams had won more than75% of those contests.

Close to 70% of those victories came during John’s 26 seasons at LimestoneCommunity High School (Bartonville). From 1976-2001 the Lady Rocketscompiled a record of 542-170. John’s 1991-92 team (32-1), touting Ms.Basketball of Illinois, Tammy Van Oppen (GPSHOF class of 2006), lost onlyto Chicago Marshall in the championship game of the IHSA Class AA Statetournament at ISU’s Redbird Arena. After a semifinal win over LaGrange(Lyons) earlier in the day, the noticeably fatigued Rockets, after trailing mostof the game, “dug deep” in the 4th quarter to finally even the score with under10 seconds to play, only to lose on a last second basket by the Commandos.

Beginning with 2004-2005 campaign, John coached for 5 seasons atRichwoods (Peoria) where his teams compiled a 147-26 record. e LadyKnights won State Championships in 2005 (Class AA vs. Bartlett, 52-48)with a perfect 38-0 record, and in 2009 (Class 3A vs. Freeport, 56-19) witha record of 34-3. (A four class system was introduced by the IHSA for the 2007-08 season.) Both championship teams wereinducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame (IBCA) in 2015.

John came out of “retirement” in 2015. At the time of hisinduction, he had compiled a 74-21 record in his 3 seasons atPrinceville High School. In his second season the Lady Princeswon their first Regional Championship since 1988 and attaineda record of 27-4. In the following year (2017-18) Gross’s teamreturned to the Sweet 16 and finished the season with a recordof 28-5.

Not surprisingly, John has received several honors both at theState and National levels. In 2007, he was named Coach of theYear (an honor based on career achievement) by the NationalHigh School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA). He wasinducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association in1994 and into the NHSACA Hall of Fame in 2009.

BILL KINGBROADCASTINGBefore building a solid professional foundation in theGreater Peoria area that lead to his legendary career insports broadcasting in the San Francisco Bay Area ofCalifornia, Bill King actually gained his initialbroadcasting experience with Armed Forces radio. Hesimulated live play-by-play accounts of games frominformation received over the wire. After WWII he

began his professional broadcasting in Pekin, Illinois. Bill broadcasted highschool games in Pekin and Peoria. He called his first minor league baseballgame in 1948 in Peoria, at the age of 19, and went on to call BradleyUniversity basketball and University of Nebraska football and basketball.

Moving to the Bay Area in the late 1950s, King was hired by KSFO-AM asa fill-in broadcaster for the San Francisco Giants baseball games after thefranchise moved from New York. A major turning point in his career occurredin 1962 when he landed the job as the play-by-play voice of the NBA’s SanFrancisco Warriors after the franchise moved from Philadelphia. (e teambecame the Golden State Warriors in 1971.) His stint with the Warriors lastedthrough the 1982-83 season. In 1966, King added the duties of OaklandRaiders play-by-play to his schedule, becoming one of the signature voices ofthe National Football League when the Raiders and the American FootballLeague merged with the NFL in 1970. He called Raiders’ games through the 1992 season.

Despite his already considerable workload for two professional teams, King was convinced to become the lead radio announcer forthe Oakland A’s in 1981. He became a beloved and legendary broadcaster during his 25 years with the A’s. He was also consideredquite the “character”-- once being responsible for the Warriors being assessed a technical foul after berating an NBA official. Amonga very small and select group of announcers, Bill received championship rings from teams representing all three major sports. Hereceived three Super Bowl rings (Raiders - NFL), one World Champion ring (Warriors - NBA), and one World Series ring (A’s –MLB). Some of his actual play-by-play calls can be heard in the movie, Moneyball, an account of the Oakland A’s season of 2002.His career sadly ended with his death in October of 2005.

His partner for 13 years, Greg Papa, said about King, “Bill is without a doubt the best radio play-by-play announcer I have heardin all of sports. His energy, preparation, his thoroughness, his word choice—he is without peer.” Indeed, in 2017, the NationalBaseball Hall of Fame named King the 41st recipient (posthumously) of the Ford C. Frick Award, the highest honor for Americanbaseball broadcasters. Among the many other tributes to his career are: 1) the naming of the radio booth at the Oakland AlamedaCounty Coliseum, “Bill King Radio Booth”; 2) the placement of a sign on the centerfield wall with King’s catchphrase, “HolyToledo” in script font, that can be flashed on an A’s homerun or other “King worthy” play; 3) on Opening Night of the 2006season, a video tribute was played on the coliseum’s large screen, and in lieu of the ceremonial first pitch, Bill King's chair, a baseball, and his headset were on the pitcher's mound; 4) his partner for the last 10 years of his career, Ken Korach, authored a biographyabout King, “Holy Toledo – Lessons from Bill King: Renaissance Man of the Mic.”

Ehrhart finished the two rounds of the finals with a score of 176 (89-87) withFerlmann a stroke behind her at 177 (84-93). Senior, Erin McCarthy, and junior, Teri O’Brien, shottheir personal best scores at the State Finals.
