THE GREAT DEPRESSION

• Started on October 29, 1929 when the stock market crashed.

• That means people lost a lot of money

• They also lost jobs. Without jobs people found themselves in debt

• Businesses closed and people were out of money

WHY IT STARTED

• People left South Carolina because life was so harsh

• Many families had to sell everything they owned

• If you were a farmer you risked dying of starvation

HOW WERE PEOPLE AFFECTED?

On March 4, 1933 FDR was elected president

He had an idea called the New Deal

The New Deal provided jobs and money for the needy

Security provided a safety net so The Great Depression wouldn’t happen again

FDR THE NEW DEAL

People built houses with whatever materials they had

Some chewed there hands until they drew blood

Three mill ion kids dropped out of school because they didn’t have enough money

Luckily there has not been a depression as bad as the Great Depression again.
