BIG SIR Message Fellow members of SIR 114, (408) 996-4175

Happy Thanksgiving!!! I have been dealing with the steady and accelerating decline of my sister who lives with us, so I have not been able to focus on much else over the past several days.

So, this will likely be the shortest note from me to you all since I took over as Big Sir almost two years ago. I think that all I can come up with is…

Make sure that you cherish and love and give thanks for your families and close friends this Holiday Season. Eat a lot of turkey and don’t forget to watch a lot of football…

Be well…

Our “Man For Everything”, our outgoing (in more ways than one) Big SIR, Lou Figone, who stayed

on for an extra year, and who will undoubtedly be a busy and productive Nominating Committee

Chairman, threatens to come after you do-nothings and drag you kicking and screaming into some

level of service within the SIR Branch 114 activities. I salute his enthusiasm but I remain awed and

disappointed that such a threat is necessary to get enough volunteers to do something, anything.

Our Branch isn’t looking for a suicide mission to the middle east, just an hour or two each month to

relieve some of the burdens too few are now carrying. Take a look at the back page and take notice

of just how many “grunt work” positions are filled by previous BIG SIR, gentlemen that have already

served several years of more than average involvement and still find their service to their fellow

members worthwhile. An Assistant Treasurer, an Assistant Secretary, a Shuttle Bus Driver (every

other month for about a half hour), someone to arrange a ride for those members who need one, a

computer Geek to learn what Kyle Finley is doing in “record keeping”.

Get off your butt and volunteer!!!!! Dan Affourtit

Our speaker on November 1st was Tiffany

Mikles, who is responsible for coordi-

nating Respite Grant Programs, assisting

families and caregivers through the Help-

line and Consultations and facilitating

support groups. Tiffany has worked in ger-

iatric care since 1988, combining all cre-

dentials in different settings, including Ad-

ministrator of designated dementia units.

She has been teaching community classes and been a public speaker for over

20 years, and has taught dementia care to over 600 professional caregivers. Her presentation was informa-

tive, well received by the SIR attending and the guests, and the Q & A was very well done.

Next month we will have an “Aria Choir”! They sing both locally and all over the state. These high school girls sing a wide range of music from classical to jazz to light pop. Their leader is in his 25th year as the Choir Director at Fremont High school. This should prove to be a perfect way to kick off the Christmas Season.

See you all on December 6th.

MEMBERSHIP - Jeff Schlageter (408) 528-7493 [email protected]

SIR has a saying: People join SIR for the speakers and activities, and stay for the members. That’s why I put out our

“Ninth Seat” sign at tables where any member can sit and get to know the SIR at that table. New members will be

wearing a colored badge so you can more easily recognize them. Please welcome them to any open seat at your table

so they will feel comfortable in joining and staying in our “SIR brotherhood”.

Membership Recruiting 2016 YTD: 151 on Jan 1st, 23 Inductees through No-vember vs 31 in 2015; Attrition in 2016 of 19 vs 13 in 2015; net gain of 4 to the present total of 155. Call or email me when you have a guest/inductee.

SIR 114 “Rooster-Ball” Recruit Drawing is here! Come to the Dec. meeting and

see who wins. You don’t have to be present, but it will be a lot of fun. If you are

coming notify Ray Blinde so you get a lunch. Every time you recruit a member, a

ping pong ball with your number on it goes into a container for a Dec. drawing.

The 3 prizes are $100, $75, and $50, and the more you recruit the more you are

likely to win. Start with 1 inductee and you are in the game! Sponsor more and

you are on your way to riches and fame! I am ineligible to win, which ups your

odds even more. If you recruit more than 1 person, your odds of winning increase

but you can only win once. The following have served as Sponsors and are eligible

for the Rooster-Ball drawing in December: John Trudeau, Tony Taylor, Terry

Griffin (2), Dan Affourtit, Roger Lasson, Don DeVincenzi(2), Dick Nelson, Tom

McKenzie, Pat Misener, Alan Renninger, Lou Figone, and Larry Martinson.

Greeting your Tablemates: I would urge you all to start your lunch by looking around your table and, if there is any person

sitting with you that you have not met before, PLEASE introduce yourself and your tablemates to the “new guy”. We organize these luncheons around a speaker and his presentation, but the bottom line on what we get from our attendance is the opportuni-ty to fraternize with our fellow Villagers, to enjoy the comradery of like- minded individuals, to share experiences. Please don’t overlook that part of the benefit of membership. Thank you. Dan Affourtit, Editor, Br 114 Grapevine

NOTICE: It has become an exasperating

problem figuring out how to get our mem-

bership to do the simple chore of advising

the Treasurer/Arrangements Chairman

when they do not intend to come to our

luncheon. We must commit to the Club-

house to pay for the meals we order and

we have to date been rather fortunate in

coming close enough to avoid extra pay-

ments. That string has run out and we have

been presented with rather significant bills

for meals not paid for by attending SIR. It is

NOT unreasonable to expect those not

coming to simply click on the e-mail link

already provided on the menu page and

the back page and type in “will not make

it” and hit “SEND”. Come on guys, DO IT!!!

No further Golf Tour-

naments for 2016.

BOCCE Paul Andersen It is a fun, easy and un-strenuous game to play. We have the

beginnings of a team but a full team of eight to play the oth-

er SIR branches chosen from the best players in a bigger

pool of SIR 114 players would be great.

We practice the last Wednesday of every month

at 3:30 PM. Contact Paul Andersen.
