sonoma hoa Board names new landscapingCommittee Chairperson

The Sonoma HOA Board of Directors has named Piper Sonoma resident Donna Kohn as Chairperson of the neighborhoods’ Landscaping Committee. In that role Donna will report to the Board on matters pertaining to the upkeep of the common grounds throughout the community as well as deed restriction compliance.

Donna is a former Landscape Committee Chair in the Oak Bluff neighborhood here in Round Rock. She states that one of the features that drew her to move to Sonoma was the outstanding landscaping that residents were treated to when driving through the community. “It is extremely important to us all that we maintain that quality for our neighborhood to protect one of our greatest investments, our homes. I am committed to working to ensure that,” Donna stressed.

Donna has been married for 30 years and has four children, the youngest of whom will be graduating from Stony Point this year heading to UT-Austin. She is a Customer Support Applications Specialist for an Austin software company.

Any resident who is interested in serving on the Landscaping Committee with Donna can contact her directly at [email protected]

neighborhood Watch Program

BLOCK CAPTAINS ROLE• Acts as liaison between neighborhood and law enforcement

agency• Distributes pamphlets, newsletters, info to neighborhood about

activity and neighborhood meetings• Issues or checks out engravers for use(if program has them)• Maintains list of phone numbers and/or email addresses, vehicle

information including license plates in neighborhood• Acts as information center for neighborhood• Makes arrangements for meetings• Knows which families are on vacation• Is alert to door to door solicitors• Reports unusual activity, pedestrians, or vehicular traffic to other

Block Captains and members• Schedule periodic group meetings of neighbors and encourage

each homeowner to attend• Contact new neighbors about the program• Keep the watch map data current• Disseminate any special information to the group such as crime

patterns in the area• Work directly with the Block Captain Liaison

Neighborhood Watch operates to educate participants in the principles of deterrence, delay, and detection. The program depends on a communications network, organized with 3 levels of participants: the residents block captains, and a local law enforcement representative. Reduction in burglary is likely because it is a well publicized program of prevention and target hardening, coupled with citizens concerns for the safety and security of the neighborhood.

By participating in a program where “we look out for each other”, you can attack crime in your community through your Neighborhood Watch Program.

spaghetti CarbonaraI have tried Spaghetti Carbonara in several restaurants and have

often come away disappointed. Often, their recipes call for using ham and cream and it just isn’t right! Authentic carbonara, which I have had in a few high end Italian restaurants, is actually quite easy and inexpensive to make. I hope you enjoy my version of this extremely tasty Italian peasant dish.

InGrEdIEnts (Serves 4)1 lb pancetta (Italian bacon available in the deli) or 1 lb bacon1 medium sweet onion, chopped into small pieces2 tbsp cold butter, sliced into 2 pieces1/4 olive oil1 cup good quality shredded Parmesan cheese (the green container will do, but please splurge for the good stuff in the deli!), plus more for table2 eggs, beaten slightly (I recommend pasteurized eggs available at our HEB to reduce the risk of salmonella)1 lb spaghettiSalt to taste

dIrECtIonsPlace water in large pot for the pasta on the stove to boil.

Slice pancetta or bacon and cook in a large skillet until most of the fat is rendered and bacon is to your desired doneness (this is the only time it will be cooked, so make sure you cook it to your preferred texture). Drain on paper towels and set aside. Retain 1 tbsp of the bacon fat in the pan and dispose of the rest. Add the chopped onions and saute until tender and translucent, about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add 1 tbsp cold butter to the pan and glide along the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon, picking up any brown bits (full of flavor) and “deglazing” the pan. Repeat with the second tbsp of butter. Add olive oil and leave on low to simmer.

Prepare pasta according to package directions. All other ingredients should be prepared before the pasta is ready. Drain spaghetti, but do not rinse! Immediately add eggs to hot pasta pot and pour drained pasta on top of the eggs. Add pancetta or bacon, onion/oil mixture, Parmesan cheese and salt to taste. Mix well, ensuring pasta is coated with the eggs, oils, and cheese. Serve with additional cheese.

Enjoy!Liz Huffstutler

Possible stolen vehicle or the driver is driving under the influence or drug impaired.

Abandoned vehicle parked on block: Possible stolen vehicle.Someone being forced into a vehicle: Possible kidnapping, assault or

attempted rape.Person detaching mechanical parts or accessories from vehicle: Possible

theft or vandalism in progress.Locked vehicle that someone is trying to forcibly enter: Possible theft

of car or contents in progress.Older children or adults, who are not from the neighborhood,

bicycling randomly or repeatedly without a purposeful destination: Possible theft of homes and/or garages.

The list is endless. Anyone doing anything that looks suspicious should be reported. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS..CALL IMMEDIATELY..DON’T HESITATE

WhAt Is susPICIous And WhEn do you CAll thE PolICE?

Suspicious activity is anything that looks like it could be connected with criminal behavior-someone casing a neighborhood, forcing open a door, grabbing a child; screaming or pounding coming from a nearby residence; strong chemical odors coming from an inappropriate building, are but a handful of examples. If the activity is or appears to be threatening to property or people, immediately report the suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1. Time is critical in apprehending criminals. It is better to be overly-suspicious than to let a criminal get away

Following is a list of suspicious activities that might be happening:

VEHICLES…Slow moving vehicle without lights on at night: May be casing the

neighborhood or tracking a victim.A parked, occupied vehicle unusual to the neighborhood: May be casing

the neighborhood, operating as a point for drug dealing, a sexual deviate or child molester waiting for their target, being a get-away car.

Vehicle being loaded with valuable if parked by closed business or unoccupied house.

From our family to yours...howdy neighbor!

My name is Josh Sowers and my wife Kristin and I

want to take a minute to introduce ourselves and our

business, Sowers Lawn Care.

Kristin and I met back in 2003 as penpals while I

was serving with the Army in Iraq. To make a long

story short, we fell in love, I finished my service,

and we got married and moved to Round Rock to

start what is now Sowers Lawn Care in 2005. This

past year we welcomed our first son in early

March. We feel incredibly blessed with the growth

we have had in our family, our business, and the

community in the past few years and are excited to

watch it continue.

We are residents of north Round Rock,

and we hope that if you see us around town, you'll

say hello...and that if you are ever in need of lawn

services...you'll give us a call! Thanks!
