Principal’s Message Welcome Kindergarten
There were a few teary eyes last Friday as mums and dads waved children
goodbye when Kinder made their way into the classroom on their first day.
The teachers have been very impressed on how settled they are during their
first week of school. We hope all the parents enjoyed the ‘My First Day’
video that Mrs Leal created for students and parents to remember starting
Kindergarten and we look forward to seeing lots of parents at the Kinder
parent BBQ on Friday 16 February at 3.45pm. Our Year 6 students have
been excellent buddies for the new Kinders and spending lots of time
supporting them in their transition into the K-6 playground. Band
Junior and Senior band will begin in Week 3 with tutorials for instruments
starting in Week 4. New band students need to return their band note that
was given out at the end of last year confirming their participation in our
band program. Students in the band program last year are not required to
return this note. Once we have received the notes we will give the new band
students their instruments. New School App
I would just like to remind parents again to download our new school app.
Please search for ‘skoolbag’ in the app store and download it. You then search
for ‘Bangor Public School’ to receive our push notifications and newsletters.
We have already had 300 downloads which will allow lots of information to be
sent to parents throughout the year. Instructions regarding the Skoolbag
app are included in this week’s Grapevine. Classes

Principal’s Message Zone Swimming Carnival
I had the pleasure of attending the Engadine Zone Swimming carnival
yesterday. All of our swimmers performed extremely well in the individual
and relay events. All students encouraged their peers on throughout the day.
Lots of parents attended to support our swimmers and cheer them on as they
raced down the pool. Adam 1/2C is likely to progress through to the Sydney
East Carnival after finishing 2nd in his 50m freestyle. Student toilets
Each morning and afternoon we are lucky to have so many parents on site. It
is important that any adult visitors do not enter the student toilets located
across the school. Student toilets are for student use only. If any visitors
require access to a toilet, please go to the administration block and speak to
our office staff. Year 2 swimming
Thank you to parents who completed our survey on Year 2 attending the
annual swimming scheme. Most parents understand that it is a lot of time out
of the classroom which can impact on learning. Considering this, 60% of
parents would like the program to continue so it will run as per schedule this
year. Office Admin hours
We often get phone calls early in the morning or very late in the afternoon.
Just to remind parents our office hours are 8.30am-4.00pm. After this time
phone calls are unable to be answered. Craig Snudden

Welcome to the 2018 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). Your child is invited to
participate in 2018.
ICAS provides an opportunity for all students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external
assessment situation. It provides teachers, parents and students with comprehensive reporting of results in
English, mathematics, science, spelling and writing.
All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered
correctly, their total score as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the state/
region. The student report is also useful for highlighting student strengths and weaknesses in the skills and
processes in the ICAS subject they participate in.
High quality UNSW certificates are awarded for each year level in each state/region as follows:
High Distinction to the top 1% of entrants
Distinction to the next 10% of entrants
Credit to the next 20% of entrants
Participation to all other participating students
Please return the permission slip and entry fee by Friday 16 March. Late entries will not be accepted. All
competitions will be held in the morning before school. Some tests take longer than others and a note will go
home to all participants a week before the sitting date with all the information you require.

ENGADINE ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
On Tuesday 27 February, 23 Bangor PS students participated at the Engadine Zone swimming carnival at
Engadine Leisure Centre. The students enthusiastically participated in each of their events and showed great
sportsmanship. Mr Snudden was very pleased with the respectful behaviour of all students. We would also like
to thank the parents for transporting and supporting the students. Overall, it was a great day with results to be
published soon. Congratulations to all students!

STEM WISHLIST
Mrs Tobias, Miss Hibbard and all Bangor students are thanking everyone for recycling and sending in old
materials we can use for our STEM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Maths) programs K-6.
We still need more donations, about 80 x 2L bottles (2L clear juice bottles are best), string, wool, straws, wire,
cardboard boxes and any spare craft materials pretty please.
I’m making a future focussed wish-listand just putting it out to the community if they have any K’Nex, LEGO
or Meccano, solar panels, wind powered mechanisms to please donate to Bangor PS. A BIG thank you to Kindy
mum Penny Underwood for already donating to the STEM program resources.

BUILDING RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN
Resilience … it’s a familiar word, isn’t it? But what does it really mean?
When we talk about resilience, we’re talking about a child’s ability to cope with ups and downs and bounce back
from the challenges they experience during childhood – for example moving home, changing schools, studying
for an exam or dealing with the death of a loved one. Building resilience helps children not only to deal with
current difficulties that are a part of everyday life, but also to develop the basic skills and habits that will
help them deal with challenges later in life, during adolescence and adulthood.
Resilience is important for children’s mental health. Children with greater resilience are better able to manage
stress, which is a common response to difficult events. Stress is a risk factor for mental health conditions
such as anxiety and depression, if the level of stress is severe or ongoing.
So where does resilience come from?
Resilience is shaped partly by the individual characteristics we are born with (our genes, temperament and
personality) and partly by the environment we grow up in — our family, community and the broader society.
While there are some things we can’t change, such as our biological makeup, there are many things we can
change.
One way of explaining the concept of resilience is to imagine a plane encountering turbulence mid-flight. The
turbulence, or poor weather, represents adversity. Different planes will respond to poor weather conditions in
different ways, in the same way different children respond to the same adversity in different ways.
The ability of the plane to get through the poor weather and reach
its destination depends on:
the pilot (the child)
the co-pilot (the child’s family, friends, teachers and health
professionals)
the type of plane (the child’s individual characteristics such as
age and temperament)
the equipment available to the pilot, co-pilots and ground crew
the severity and duration of the poor weather.
We can all help children become more resilient and the good news is, you don’t have to do it alone. You can ask
other adults such as carers and grandparents to help. Building children’s resilience is everyone’s business, and
it’s never too early or too late to get started. We’ve got some simple things that you can do in your own home.
How can I build resilience in my child?
Our latest research found that there are five areas that offer the best chance for building resilience in
children.

As a parent, carer, or significant adult, you can help to develop essential skills, habits and attitudes for
building resilience at home by helping your child to:
build good relationships with others including adults and peers
build their independence
learn to identify, express and manage their emotions
build their confidence by taking on personal challenges
This information was taken from the Beyond Blue Website www.beyondblue.org.au
Over the coming weeks further information about how to build resilience in the four areas will be included in
the Grapevine.
If your child is currently experiencing stress, challenges or hardships in life which are affecting their
wellbeing, additional professional support may be necessary.
Please contact Heidi Jarvis (School Counsellor) on Mondays and Tuesdays on 9543-2244 if you need
further information or support.
