Planning Ahead– We’re told to live in the pre-
sent, but a little planning ahead can help our
friends and families when the time comes for us
to depart this world. Do you ever think as you
are singing your favorite hymn on a Sunday
morning that you would like to have that hymn
sung at your memorial or funeral service? Or
revisit a particular verse again and again that
has special significance to you, and know that
those words are what you would like read at the
celebration of your life? A few weeks ago, Pastor
Scott gave a sermon entitled “There’s an App for
That.” In this case, “There’s a Form for That.”
Stop by the church office and Everlee can sup-
ply you with a short, two-page form to plan the
details of your memorial service. After you com-
plete the form, it will be filed in the church of-
fice for reference when it is needed. When you
tell your friends and family that you have com-
pleted this form and that it is located at the
church, their first reaction might be concern for
your health, but their next reaction will most
likely be “Thank you!” You have given them a
great gift.
SCOUT SUNDAY– APRIL 17th– Calling all current,
past, and future scouts– that’s Cub Scouts,
Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Indian Princesses,
and more! On Sunday, April 17th, you are
invited to attend either worship service and
wear your vest and/or uniform. NBPC
wants to recognize all that you and your
organization stand for, as well as honor
your contributions to our world. Questions?
Contact Brianna– [email protected].

Message From Brianna… I have been so fortunate to work here at NBPC for the last two and a half years. God orig-
inally called me to this place to be the “coordinator of middle school youth ministry.”
Since then my calling, and my job title/responsibilities, have evolved into being the
“seminary intern,” which encompasses so much more than I could have ever imagined.
Under the guidance of Pastor Bob and now Pastor Scott, I have been able to learn every
single day more about ministry and more about where I see myself being called to serve
God in this world than I ever thought possible. This church has become my family. I am
honored to call you all my first congregation and my friends. I know that I am loved and
supported by you all in everything that I do.
For this reason, I am excited to announce that I’ve been accepted, with a full scholar-
ship, to the Bossey Institute to receive a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Ecumenical
Studies from mid-September 2016-end of January 2017. This program is part of the Uni-
versity of Geneva and the World Council of Churches...in Switzerland! God works in such
mysterious ways, and I am so eager to see what God has planned for the next steps in my
life after Seminary.
Here is a little about the program, mostly drawn from their website and resources. The
Bossey Institute was founded in 1946. This residential program combines academic study
as well as a cross-cultural community to have participants learn and experience the ecu-
menical oneness of Christ. Students are of various Christian denominations from all over
the world. These students live in community, study, and worship together daily. The Ecu-
menical Institute’s purpose is to “face the challenges of living in increasingly pluralistic
societies, in a world of economic and cultural globalization, climate change, neglect of hu-
man rights and attempts to justify growing violence in the name of religion, the churches
need leaders with knowledge of other religious traditions and with a sensitivity to confes-
sional and cultural differences.” Please go to the following website and explore if you
would like to learn more. I can also (attempt) to answer any questions you might have. My
last Sunday will be August 28th, 2016. I am eager to stay on through the summer and see
where this ministry takes us!

Church Supports Mission Co-Workers Bound for Zambia: Charles
and Melissa Johnson of Northwood Presbyterian Church in San
Antonio believe their call to service in Lundazi, Zambia has been
shaped by their struggles and joys life has presented them.
“Perhaps the most significant was the life and death of our severely
disabled son, Holden,” Charles says. “Throughout his life, even at the most difficult times,
we saw God’s hand at work through Holden and others who came into our lives.”
Now Charles and Melissa are turning their attention towards God’s work abroad. After par-
ticipating in short-term mission trips to Vietnam, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of
the Congo, they are now headed to Zambia. In mid-February, the Johnsons visited NBPC
to share their story and ask for prayers and support. The church’s M&O Committee subse-
quently approved a $1500 donation to the missionaries.
Their work overseas will focus on partnering with the Church of Central Africa Presbyteri-
an’s Zambia Synod to expand its ministry of community development and food security.
The Johnsons shared that The Synod serves a population struggling with massive poverty
and the rapid spread of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS.
They will focus heavily on developing the Chasefu Model Farm, an agricultural product of
Chasefu Theological College. The farm feeds the students and provides opportunities for
future pastors to learn agricultural techniques. Charles will serve as a developmental special-
ist and Melissa will support him in this role.
Prior to entering mission service, Charles served for 21 years as president of Patty’s Herbs,
Inc., an agribusiness based in Pearsall, TX. He holds a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and a
master’s in business administration from Texas A&M.
NBPC wishes the Johnsons well and may God bless them and their missionary work. To
personally donate, visit www.pcusa.org/charles-and-melissa-johnson. To read about their
work, follow their blog, “Life in Lundazi” at http://chasjohnson78061.com.
JOB DESCRIPTION CREATED FOR ASSOCIATE PASTOR– CE– The Personnel Committee met
March 8th and finalized a job description for the position of Associate Pastor-Christian Education (CE).
Once the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) is elected by the Congregation, the PNC will utilize the
job description in their search for the new Associate Pastor–CE. The Associate Pastor-CE will assist Sen-
ior Pastor Nowack with worship leadership, act in a liaison-supervisory capacity for KDO, oversee nurse-
ry care programs and staff, children’s ministry, youth ministry, confirmation classes, youth group, sum-
mer mission trips, adult ministry, and some pastoral care duties among others. My thanks to Pastor
Nowack and Personnel Committee Members Charlie Felts, Ken Jacobs, and Dawn Keselring for their
assistance in the development of the new job description. —Michael Meek, Chair- Personnel Committee

ly Promise’s 2nd Annual Bed Race, to be held April 23rd
at Church Hill Middle School. This event is the primary
fundraising vehicle for Family Promise– GNB this year.
If you would like to sponsor our team with an online do-
nation, please go to www.nbbedrace.com, click Donate To
This Event, and search for the New Braunfels Presbyteri-
an Church team. If you would like to donate offline, please make checks payable to
“Family Promise-GNB” with “Bed Race” on the memo line. Please submit checks
to Neil Gately or the church office.

Dear Friends,
I heard a story once about a local newspaper that had a Sunday morning religion
section containing, among other things, letters to the editor about various reli-
gious issues. Most weeks these letters were pretty innocuous, but one Sunday,
something was printed that became quite controversial.
A man wrote:
“I quit going to church this year. I decided that listening to sermons week after week was a stupid thing to do. After all, I went to church for more than 40 years and during my lifetime, I probably heard 5,000 sermons. I can only remember about five of them. What a waste of time.”
-Bored and Busy
This sparked a flurry of incoming letters. Some people wrote that sermons do
make a difference, while others sided with Bored and Busy’s opinion that they
were basically meaningless and unnecessary.
Finally one letter was printed that ended the debate:
“I quit eating this year. Thanks to Bored and Busy’s insights, I decided that eating week after week was a stupid thing to do. After all, I have been eating for more than 40 years and during my lifetime, I probably have eaten 5,000 meals. I can only remember about five of them. What a waste of time.”
-Starved and Stupid
You too may wonder what good it is to come to worship and listen to sermons or
participate in weekly Bible studies or daily devotions. Like the first letter writer in
the story, you may think you’re too bored or busy for the things of God. You may
feel as if you’re just surviving. Do you want to just survive or thrive?
The fact is that you need these things to thrive: worship, Bible study, and personal
devotions. In order to grow as a disciple of Christ, you need spiritual food (see I
Corinthians 3:2). You need to feed on the Word of God. Not every spiritual meal
is going to be memorable or one for the record books, but every spiritual meal
will provide you with the nourishment you need to thrive as a disciple of Christ.
In Christ,

Session Highlights From March- The following are highlights from the
March 8th meeting of the Session:
Treasurer Rosanne Stockhorst reported that for the month of February, offerings exceeded ex-
penses by $1503. Year-to-date reflects a net income of $948.
Christian Education Committee, led by Sharon Jebens, reported that Vacation Bible School
will be held the week of June 6-10 from 9 am-noon. The theme will be “Cave Quest.”
The Communications Committee, chaired by Kari Hutchison, is initiating the process to de-
velop and design a new logo for the church.
Jody Cosson, chair of the Congregational Care Committee, reported that 12 members in nurs-
ing homes, hospitals, etc., are being visited and 22 members received cards from the commit-
tee in the last month. The group is also working on an organized way to schedule rides to
church and doctor appointments for members who cannot drive.
The Facilities Committee, led by Joyce Taylor, is moving forward with a door lock system for
the Kids Day Out external door. A $9206 bid for 12 security cameras for the church and a 16-
channel Digital Video Recorder was approved by the committee. Update on the cooktops in
the kitchen—they were tested and proved to be working, so they will not be replaced at this
time.
Austin Talley reported that the Fellowship Committee hosted a successful Fellow-
ship Dinner on Feb. 24. A total of 44 people attended. The next one, on March 30th,
is an Easter EGGstravaganza (pictured right) and go fly a kite event. Future dinners
are April 27 and May 25.
Session met and learned more about Colette Nies who requested the transfer of her member-
ship from Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas back to NBPC. Session approved the
request. Nies is a chaplain in the University Health System in San Antonio.
The Mission & Outreach Committee’s, led by Jerri Petmecky, highlights and actions are fea-
tured in articles in this newsletter.
During the Personnel Committee report, Michael Meek reported that the Nominating Com-
mittee is recommending the following members to serve on the Pastoral Nomination Commit-
tee for the Associate Pastor for Christian Education– Duane Knudson, Colleen Beito, Carolyn
Reed, George Burke, and Susan Cowden. Session decided that a Congregational Meeting on
March 20th at 10:45 am will be conducted to hold an election for the PNC for the Associate
Pastor.
David Wright reported on behalf of the Worship Committee. Highlights included the follow-
ing important dates: May 15 (Confirmation Service), July 3 and Sept. 4 (joint services during
holiday weekends), and June 5 (Graduation Sunday). The “One Great Hour of Sharing” offer-
ing will be on Easter Sunday.
