MY MISTRESS NAMED SAN DIEGOMy loyalty lies with you Mrs. Philadelphia. I know it’s been a while since I’ve seen you. Is that why your heart was so cold this winter? I’ve found a new lady and her name is Mrs. San Diego. I’ve known her for 10 years now and her eyes shines so bright all year around. But, my loyalty lies with you Mrs. Philadelphia. You made me what I am today. Mrs. San Diego opened her welcoming arms to me and embraced my dreams. Allowed me to create lanes called The G.O.O.D.S. Blvd. I thank you her for that. Mrs. San Diego has done so much for me and provided me with a paradise outlook on life, and warmer temperatures in December. My team and I have dedicated May as the “San Diego” Issue Pt. 1. For the remainder of this year and years to come we will be spotlighting the best of the best of Southern California. There are so many GOODS restaurants, resorts, musicians, boutiques, salons, and entrepreneurs in this beautiful city. We will cover each and every one of you. Congratulations to San Diego’s new Mayor Kevin Faulconer. Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to speak with us at The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine. I would like to thank my entire team for their hard work and dedication.

Special thanks to Rocky Forguson! You have the GOODS!

With this season’s bold graphic print trend already in stores, it is best to know how to mix

these patterns for optimal wear and use! These prints may be more versatile than you think, and since these prints are now in everything from shoes, shorts, skirts, tops, dresses and denim, you may as well be bold yourself and buy a pair this season!

For men, this idea can never cross their minds, from being used to the classic black and navy suit choices. Branching out with your wardrobe though can be fun, and will definitely catch the eyes of women, and who wouldn’t want that, right? If you are new to mixing patterns, this way is the safest and easiest to transition into it.

Start with a patterned blazer, like this navy blazer with a very light plaid in it. Then, when choosing a shirt, stay in the same color palate. This navy plaid shirt has a pop of contrasting red, for some fun, plus, you can never go wrong with the classic red, white, and blue. To finish the look, I chose a red bow tie to tie in the pop of red in the shirt. This look is fun, yet subtle, since the plaid in the blazer is very fair, you almost cannot see it. Pairing patterns can really vamp up your wardrobe and give you a modern take on fashion.

Don’t just stop at plaid either, mix stripes, gingham, polka dots, even floral patterns into your wardrobe. If you are new to it, and still timid the best way and simple way to add pattern is through ties, bow ties, and socks. Get creative, you may end up loving these new fashion possibilities.

For women, mixing pattern is one fun technique when creating a outfit. Women tend to have more options of prints than men do. So it can actually be easier for women to mix patterns. Once again, it is easiest to combine prints within the same color family.

However, another easy tip, is by combining patterns with one item in mostly black. Each of these three items has black it, with a contrasting color. This dark neutral allows for the look to stay clean, and not too crazy. The patterns become a fun accessory almost, and an unexpected detail.

Feel free to really get creative though when mixing patterns. However, do not make an entire outfit of completely different patterns that look just looks jumbled and clown like. Who would want that...?

I do suggest mixing small patterns with larger patterns though for fun. Or purchasing a coat with a great, bold pattern, that is such a statement piece, it almost becomes your identifier.

Be brave and creative. The possibilities are endless, and with so many fantastic new prints this season, mixing and matching, could never be better.

With the change in season comes the change of weather, mood, trend and my personal favorite, color. Notoriously, fall is when we all go richer and warmer, while in summer we transition into lighter and brighter. Most colorists prepare themselves for their clients to crave change, but sometimes the consumer’s expectation of what is achievable is off the radar. As a client, it’s critical to know how to prepare both your hair and your mind as you plan to shift into that beautiful beachy blonde this summer.

A tint brush is not a magic wand.Unfortunately, media portrays a very unrealistic expectation of hair color. We see celebrities like Lady Gaga, Nikki Minaj and Katy Perry drastically change the color of their hair on a daily basis. What we rarely consider? Two things: celebrities have disposable income to pay thousands for these overnight transformations and more often than not, these extreme makeovers are usually extensions or wigs. While it would be so fun to go from black to blonde to pink to blue at the snap of your finger, it’s just not reality. Hair is a fabric, and an incredibly delicate one. Colorists are trained and educated as their own breed of chemists – the good ones know what your hair can handle by the time they see you walk through the door. If your colorist tells you that your hair is in danger of serious damage and the very real “chemical haircut,” they aren’t just feeding you bull. We are hair chemists, not magicians. So trust the path we are recommending.

In the spotlight

Know your past. When you sit in the chair of a colorist, the consultation is going to consist of a couple of predictable questions:

“When was your last color service?” “Have you had highlights or been blonde in the past?” “Any relaxers? Perms? Keratin treatments?” “Is color being pulled roots to ends every time?” While we don’t expect you to know every gritty detail, keep a general note of what your hair has been through, and not just in the past 6 months. Hair grows about 6 inches every year. If your hair is down to your hips, that means you have approximately 5 years of history on your head. Also, don’t try to hide things you might not be proud of from your colorist. If you’ve given in to the at-home box color from time to time, tell us. Keeping secrets is only going to hinder the end result. Plus, a well-trained colorist can see the lies in your hair from a mile away, so you might as well just fess up!

A healthy canvas makes all the difference. The best advice I can my clients? You are equally responsible for the longevity and vibrancy of your color as I am. A hairdresser spends maybe 3 hours with your hair every 6-8 weeks; you are in charge the rest of the time. You may think that your hairdresser is just trying to make profit when recommending high-end treatments and products for you to take home, but the truth is that hairdressers make very little profit from anything you may buy from them. They are recommending these products to you because they trust and believe in the performance of what they do and can guarantee their work when you use them. If you are planning to make a big change this season, do some prep work. Invest in a high quality conditioning treatment and start a weekly routine of them at least 4 weeks before you start the

Page 18: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

www.thegoodsmag.co

blonding process. Start by clarifying your hair of build-up, toxins and mineral deposits with Nioxin’s Clarifying Cleanser. This will allow your hair to soak up as much moisture as possible. For fine, delicate hair, Wella’s Enrich Treatment is my favorite. It has serious moisturizing and reparitive qualities without making the hair weighed down. Coarse, dry hair that may have already been through the ringer in the past is in need of repair and strengthening – this is the job for Sebastian’s Penetraitt Masque. Coming into the salon with a clean, healthy canvas makes all the difference.

Slow and steady wins the race.Allow your hair a chance to breathe between blondings and expect to transform into that summer bombshell in phases. Could it be possible to go from brunette to platinum in one sitting? Yes. But you are going to shell out some big bucks and are probably going to need to sacrifice quite a few inches in the process. If you can plan ahead and be patient, your hair is going to be much happier if you go through a few sessions of highlights. Have a heart to heart with your colorist and ask for an idea of what phases of blonde you can expect to go through while getting to your goal.

Suitability matters.Sure, Gwen Stefani makes an incredible platinum blonde. But that doesn’t mean that you will. There are so many different kinds of blonde, and each are best suited for certain skin tones. A cool complexion is going to look best in your cooler

blondes. Words like platinum, ash, pearl, frosty and vanilla come to mind. Warmer skin tones are meant for golden, strawberry, caramel, honey and beige blonde. How do you know which you are? Cool skin tones are usually accompanied by blue/grey eyes, blue/purple vein color and typically gravitate towards fashion in silver, jewel tones, black or crisp white. Warm skin tones are usually accompanied by golden brown or hazel grey eyes, green/yellow vein color and typically gravitate towards fashion in gold, fall tones, brown or cream/off-white. If you’re unsure, ask your colorist what they think will work best for you.

Think about your maintenance goals. While change is always fun and exciting, sometimes a spontaneous change is not well thought out. If you’re natural hair grows in very dark, drastically changing 100% of all of your hair color is going to be very high maintenance, requiring a touch-up every 4-6 weeks. If you’re prepared both mentally and financially for this commitment, enjoy the transformation! If this seems like more than you’ve bargained for, opt for a more dimensional blonde that still incorporates bits and pieces of your natural color. This option will grow out softer with a much less harsh root grow out. Less contrast equals less maintenance. Before your colorist starts any color change on you, always ask when they suggest or would expect you to see them next. Maintaining your color should always be your choice, not theirs. Your colorist will be impressed and grateful that how your color looks, long term, is just as important to you as it is to them!

San Diego is known for its beautiful weather, high-cost of living, wonderful beaches, and now plus size fashion! As the plus size industry continues to grow and get more attention from the entertainment and fashion industry, a number of designers for plus size women are emerging into the spotlight! These designers are right in our hometown of beautiful San Diego!

Being in the plus size fashion industry for a number of years I’m so excited to see more and more designers getting the attention they deserve, but I am happier they are coming out of San Diego! A’doreus by fashion designer Sharlene Borremo is one of those designers. I had the pleasure of not only interviewing her but also reviewing her collections. Sharlene is “Fashion Week San Diego’s first and only plus size designer,” and has been for a number of years. It’s about time that her beautiful, vibrant, eye-popping fashions are getting the well-deserved attention for not only the plus size industry, but for the Fashion Industry.

When did you know you wanted to be a plus size designer? Growing up, I never kept up with or followed fashion trends because plus size clothing options were so limited. The first time I gave fashion any thought was when I turned 21 and started to go clubbing. I always feared showing up to the club or an event wearing the same thing the next plus size woman was wearing. I realized that there was a definite lack of fashion forward clothing for the plus size consumer. In 2005 I decided to go to fashion school with the sole purpose of learning how I could translate my retail and management experience into the fashion industry as a buyer. I never considered fashion design until 2006 when I was fortunate enough to intern with World Renown Fashion Icon and Textime Designer, Zandra Rhodes. I initially interned for Zandra as a business student while I attended Fashion Careers College to obtain a degree in Fashion Business & Technology. With every task she challenged me creatively. Because of her I discovered my creative side and a hidden talent of hand painting various items such as leather, denim, and glass. Rhodes encouraged me to pursue a career in design. She saw the potential before I had even let the idea cross my mind. So I took a leap of faith and pursued the Fashion Design and Technology Degree the day after I graduated from the Fashion Business and Technology Program. I have been employed by Rhodes as an Assistant Painter and Sewer since 2009.

Over the years plus size fashion has been dull, plain, and not very exciting. A number of designers have been afraid to be daring but not Sharlene! Reviewing her collection I was not only impressed

A’doreusBy Brandee “Kurvy” J

by Sharlene Borremo

Page 33: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

but thankful that she was not scared to be daring with patterns, prints, colors, and overall design. Her collection has been known to let the inner “Fashion Beast” that is in all of us plus size women out! A’doreus is the collection for all Plus Size women! She gives you everything you want! Chic, sleek, colors and more! In my own words the collection is a beautiful mix of Rhianna, meets Olivia Pope, meets Audrey Hepburn.

Describe your NEW Spring line? What was your inspiration

for the collection? Design is a very personal and emotional process for me. Every collection is inspired by 3 things: the women who will be wearing them, music, and my current thoughts revolving love. It’s almost like a “formula” for success. I get to pour my soul and intimate thoughts about love into each collection. When I look back at each collection it reminds me of how far I’ve come, how great things are, or how much of a hopeless romantic I am. It’s my way of sharing and documenting my life experiences. The Spring/Summer 2015 collection is about simplicity and appreciating the basics. The pieces will have feminine style lines and classic silhouettes. The color scheme usually stays the same: black, white, a pop of color, a print, and black piping. You’ll have to wait and see what pop of color I choose and how I will use the printed fabric. I’m leaning toward red or coral... but we’ll see in October when I showcase my collection at Fashion Week San Diego how closely I stick to my original design concept.

The A’doreus Collection is more than just a fashion line it comes from the inner beauty of a woman who understands that being a plus size woman is not easy. She looks into her soul and heart before she creates and that is what sets Sharlene apart from the rest. Designing for her is more than just creating something to sell it’s about telling a story and making sure that story touches all plus size women.

What is next for A’doreus? The A’doreus mission statement is to live a lifestyle that a’dores and embraces diversity and size acceptance through the many facets of fashion. Collaborating with other artists and women is essential to A’doreus’ success. Last year I collaborated with local artist, Rebecca Berenson of Urban Fish Design to create an exclusive design that was printed on fabric and used in the Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Recently I had the pleasure of meeting a San Diegan R&B/soul singer who will be auditioning in July to represent A’doreus on the Fashion Week San Diego runway as a plus size model. We envision the A’doreus collection coming down the runway to her music. It’s all about timing so you will have to tune in. It is my goal to empower and support other women’s dreams. In addition, A’doreus will be teaming up with Jacqueline Penhos, founder of Hugs and Bags to collect donations that will help the homeless people of San Diego. I want to utilize this platform as a way to uplift people.

As far as design, I would like to create a petite plus size line. After a dozen or more model submissions from beautiful women who are under 5’9’’- I know that it is a

Page 34: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

www.thegoodsmag.co

niche that hasn’t been tapped into yet. I am only 5’2’’ myself so I understand their struggle being plus size AND short.

With all of the buzz and excitement around A’doreus I cannot wait to see the new collection at Fashion Week San Diego this year! If you cannot wait that long you will have a chance to see some designs at Fashion Week’s Spring Showcase on April 26th at Harrah’s Hotel! Get ready San Diego the Plus Size Fashion industry will be taking over the city!

San Diego, California is home to many beaches, restaurants, theme parks, and beautiful hotels! One of the top hotels in our beautiful city for over 30 years is the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa. If you’re looking for the perfect staycation this is the place you need to go!

When walking into the hotel you are immediately taken back by the beautiful indoor waterfall that makes you feel like you are in Hawaii. At the bottom of the waterfall is a beautiful Koi Pond that is home to over 75 Koi fish. The pond stretches throughout the entire property and is mind-blowing!

After checking into one of their waterfront rooms, which provides you with direct access to the beach, you can walk over to the award winning restaurant Atoll for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. However, you MUST come out to San Diego’s Top Brunch which is the Atoll’s Sunday Brunch from 10AM-2PM every Sunday! I have been to a number of brunches in San Diego and around the country but none of those have topped the Catamaran’s Sunday Brunch with unlimited mimosas! This brunch not only features an outstanding omelet station but also has fresh made sushi, fresh seafood, and my favorite cook to order Belgian waffles! With about 4-5 different food stations focusing on food options from different parts of the world, this brunch really does have something for everyone!

Besides enjoying the waffles, fresh seafood, and the unlimited mimosas the service is also outstanding! Whenever I go my party and I are always greeted with warm smiles and never have to wait for anything! Our glasses are never empty and they also bring out fresh muffins just because! Now that is great service!

LA Hair is one of WETv’s top reality shows. The show features the top celebrity hairstylists in Hollywood working at Kim Kimble’s Hair Studio. There is always plenty of drama, diva personalities, and fabulousness from the cast of the show. Personally I have been a fan of the show since its debut two years ago when I immediately discovered that one of the cast members, Anthony Pazos, brings so much excitement to the show and the world of hair! Anthony can do it all including hair and make-up all while holding his own with other cast members including China and Lisa.

Speaking with Anthony for this interview was not only a positive experience, but also very exciting because I

received a sneak peak of what we can look forward to this fall with hair and beauty trends.

Anthony knew at a very young age he had the gift of making women look beautiful and feel good about themselves. He started doing hair on his sisters and siblings at the age of 13! He was responsible for getting them ready for school and making sure they looked wonderful. These experiences allowed him to discover that he wanted a career in the hair and beauty industry.

Even after being in the industry for so many years Anthony always has his creative juices flowing. Since he is working with a number A-List celebrities he has to always make sure they are looking HOT! Anthony: “HAHAHA, I would love to see the “Rat Tail” come back from the 80’s! One thing I do not want to see come back is the perm, ladies! Let’s keep that locked up!”

Everyone has their fashion idol whose style speaks to them. Anthony loves Rhiana’s bold and flamboyant style! “…how she does things on her terms is so inviting and makes me want to do what I want even more. Plus how she was so bold to wear that see-through sheer out and showing everyone her Vajayjay was so fabulous honey!!!!” Anthony said.Anthony has been a cast member on LA Hair since the beginning and throughout the seasons it has seemed that he has to always prove himself to the other hairstylists. That does not stop him from enjoying being a part of the show! Stepping into this show he knew he would have to work extra hard for the respect that he deserves.

Me: What is your favorite part of being on LA Hair?

Anthony: “WOW, everyone on the show is so talented and they all have different skills. Hanging out with everyone and being able to learn from each other is my favorite part of being on the show. Even though we have our fights we all love hanging out with one another and seeing how we all can grow as hairstylists.”

2014 has been a great year for Anthony. Being on a hit show, owning his own “Anthony Pazos” salon in West Hollywood, and still looking to expand nothing will stop

this celebrity hairstylist from taking over the beauty world! Oh he also has his own line of hair products which work for all hair types. Dreaming and doing big things is what sets him apart from the rest. Anthony has faced so many obstacles but one thing he does not do is give up.

“A number of people these days have what I call the crab mentality. They want to try to pull you down to stay at their level but you have to do what is best for you. F**k them! Do what makes you happy and keep it moving!” - AnthonyYou can catch Anthony on LA Hair every Thursday night on WETv and if you want to schedule an appointment with him at his salon, go to his website at www.anthonypazos.com to book your next appointment!

Defend! Don’t forget to defend your skin against the harmful UV rays with a daily SPF! Neutrogena makes an Ultra Sheer SPF 100 that makes it the perfect product to protect your sensitive skin. The lightweight, dry touch formula dries quickly and keeps shine at bay all day long. Make sure to evenly cover your face, ears, and delicate eye lids daily for the best defense against sun damage.

Remember the Coconut! We have all heard by now the benefits of drinking electrolyte heavy coconut water but did you know that infusing your skin with the ultra hydrating liquid can restore moisture and balance skin tone? There are a number of products hitting drug store shelves containing this magical ingredient including Dial Coconut Water body wash. In addition to the hydrating coconut this body wash also features skin soothing bamboo extract.

Skip the Shampoo! Not every day, but try only washing your hair every other day to allow natural moisture to reach the overly dry ends. If you still can’t bear to having your hair down try a messy updo or casual ponytail.

Weed, Pot, Mary Jane, Bud, the list goes on and on for the names associated with Marijuana. One thing is for sure, it has definitely become less of an issue or “bad drug” to more of a lifestyle choice and culture. With that comes no surprise that some of our favorite celebs are also apart of this lifestyle. Some of them have even gotten involved with legalization for cannabis use. Now, celebrities like Snoop Dogg (Snoop Lion now), Rihanna, and Wiz Khalifa are people that we KNOW toke up however, in this article you will find out who else is also 420 friendly!

Feature Spotlight:

Rising Starlet & International Model Leidy MazoBy Solomon Osayande Jr.

International model and actress Leidy Mazo, has the GOODS, and this rising star embodies the artistic allure that inspires this publication.

Leidy is a talent to be reckoned with after being featured on the big screen as well as a plethora of publications and brands across the globe. The talented and young Colombian export has brought her modeling prowess to The GOODS Magazine helping us bolster this month’s theme “Lights, Camera, Fashion”.

For those unfamiliar with Leidy, the Colombian actress and model has been in the likes of Transformers 3 and has worked with brands such as Guess , Jack Daniels, and Lads, just to name a few. With a promising career to date and many more projects in the works, Leidy’s star will only continue to rise as the talented actress and model makes her push towards becoming a household name.

GooDS MaGaZINe: Hello Leidy, why don’t we start off by having you tell The GOODS Magazine a little bit about yourself, starting off with where you are from. I detect an accent.

LeIDy MaZo: I am from Colombia. Yes I love my accent and I never want to lose it!

GM: So you are model and an actress, which do you prefer and why?

LM: I am both but I prefer acting because you can be any character. I also love being on set and all the hard work that goes into making a movie, but modeling is fun too because you get to travel around the world to get the right shot.

GM: What inspired you to get into acting and modeling?

LM: I’ve loved modeling since I was a kid, dressing up and posing for the camera felt natural to me. When I met Michael Bay it inspired me to get into acting.

LM: As a model I know sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to get the perfect shot, what was the craziest photo shoot that you have been a part of?

GM: So you are model and an actress, which do you prefer and why?

LM: The craziest moment for me was being on a beach in California half naked with a snake wrapped around me as the waves hit us, but it made for some good pictures.

GM: As an international model, what are some of the cooler products or clothing lines you have modeled?

Page 48: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

LM: I think the black tape project was probably the coolest thing I have done because they put tape all over my body and made it into art, but I love modeling Guess because they have great jeans and amazing make up artists.

GM: I am sure for both acting and modeling there is a lot of traveling that you must do, what is your favorite city or country that you have visited for “work”?

LM: Definitely Dubai, I love the culture and how everyone dresses.

GM: I know the answer to this question but can you tell The GOODS readers what country are you in right now? Life must be so rough ;)

LM: Right now I am in France for the Cannes Film Festival and next I will be in Monaco.

GM: If you could work with any three actors or directors who would they be?

LM: I love working with Michael Bay, he understands me. I would love to work with Sofia Vergara and Angelina Jolie. I look up to both of them.

GM: Fun question, what is your idea of a good time?

LM: Traveling with a group of friends around the world.

GM: Favorite city you have visited for “play”?

LM: Las Vegas.

GM: I know that you are from Vegas, does that city ever get boring?

LM: To me it will never be boring, I love it there.

GM: What is the most exotic place you have had a photo shoot?

LM: Dubai

GM: The first thing I saw you in was Transformers 3, pretty damn awesome project by the way, was that your first movie role?

LM: Yes, I was very blessed to be in it.

GM: As an actress what would be your dream project?

LM: A lead role in a Mafia film or someone’s crazy girlfriend, something that can challenge me.

GM: Supermodel or Academy Award winning actress?

LM: That’s hard to say but I have to choose Academy Award winning actress.

GM: If you could model any clothing line or product what would it be?

LM: I would love to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel but I don’t think I’m tall enough.

GM: What is next for Leidy Mazo? Do you have any projects in the works you can tell us about?

LM: I am working on a few projects but nothing I can really talk about yet. Let’s just say my acting career isn’t done yet.

GM: Before I let you go, is there anyone that you would like to give a shout out to or anything you would like us to look out for that’s happening in the busy life of Leidy? You may have answered this question already.

LM: I want to shout out my mom, she is my biggest fan. Also my brothers Andres and Jay, Michael Bay for always being there and for telling me to keep acting, and everyone who believes in me. I love you all.

Everyday many people ponder about what’s going to happen next in their everyday lives. The GOODS got the chance to interview Houston, Texas based medium Sandra Logan and here is what she had to say to live life to its fullest.

GooDS: HoW DID You DISCovER YouR gIfT of SIgHT? DID You HAvE REoCCuRRIng InCIDEnTS oR vISIonS AS A CHILD?

SL: Yes, I always saw people, but didn’t find it strange. My father always acknowledged my imaginary (or so a lot of people thought) friend Jody . I saw her and she was in my life for several of my young years between four and six. But I find referring to it as a Gift not entirely accurate. I think we all have the ability, but it is like a muscle you have to zero in on it and develop it.

GooDS: CAn You MAKE SELf-PREDICTIonS?

SL: No I cannot see things for myself. I think it is because I am a bit afraid of seeing my future as I have some people in my life with serious illnesses and don’t wish to see what is going to happen.

GooDS: HAvE You HEARD of AnY RELATIvES THAT HAD THE SAME vISIonARY ABILITIES?

SL: Yes My father and mother had it, and that is who allowed me to believe in my self and continue to go forward. When I started school, I quit doing it, it no longer was fun, when children made fun of me. My son and daughter both have the ability, my son uses his more than my daughter. My youngest son doesn’t believe in it so much.

GooDS: HoW Do THE InSIgHTS of ouR LIfE PATHS AffECT uS WITH REgRET onLY?

SL: As far as our Life Path I think we decide that before we come here, according to what we ant to learn here, or what we want to experience on this plain..I don’t think that we can change it , it is sort of an agreement we make before we get here. It is like takeing a plane ride, and deciding to stop somewhere before our destination to see something new. We are allowed to get off of the path, but believe me life will knock you back on it if you sight see too long. As far as regrets when we throw away this garbage bag we carry around (our body) that carrys our soul, we don’t have regrets. Regrets are our humanness. It is what our brain tells, but when we leave here we don’t take that with us. We become love and light, and join the light ( some call it God ) whomever We join that light, and don’t take hate and regrets, so that is a short lived luxury.

GooDS: CAn ouR LIfE PATHS CHAngE oR onLY THE CHoICES WE MAKE CREATE THE CHAngE of ouR oWn PATHS?

SL: No I don’t think we can change our life path, and when we try to control it,, we cause ourselves havoc, then we wonder why nothing goes right. I always say our passion is our Destiny, I like Paul Harvey, (well known It author of a book by that name) that we don’t change our destiny or life path. It is set in stone. One way or the other we will follow it before we leave here.

GooDS: WHAT’S THE MoST fREquEnT quESTIon oR CuRIoSITY PEoPLE HAvE ABouT THEIR LIfE PATHS?

SL: People are always asking if they are following their life path. I always tell them they will know if they aren’t, it kind of like walking in a Hurricane, the wind

will eventually blow you in one direction or the other. I think you have to believe that you are that great extension of perfection , The Light, or God. What can you possibly not do? Ypu are perfection, lf you take your block type today and you took it when you were born, it is exactly the same. You are what you came in this world to be, the only thing that interferes is that thing you call a brain. and unfortunately we start to believe what we are told, and we store that information in our brain, and start to believe what we are told, about what we can’t do, what we believe is what we are. WE listen to other people’s opinions of us, and those people will leave and we keep their opinions like a bad pair of shoes wearing them, even though they don’t really fit.

GooDS: AnY ADvICE To LIvE fuLLY WITHouT REgRETS?

SL: Live in the Now. We are not guaranteed tomorrow or even the next hour. We spend so much of our time worrying about tomorrow like it is an entitlement, but it isn’t. It is a gift, and some of us will receive it and some of us won’t. Again, as far as regretting anything, it is a horrible mistake. You make choices the best you can with the information you have at the time. There is no book on Life yet that guarantees no mistakes. I tell people to stay open to change. Don’t have tunnel vision about life They say God laughs most when we tell him “Our Plans. When something changes go with it, it is probably taking you in the direction that you are supposed to go, to usually meet the people you need to meet to go forward in the direction you are supposed to go in.

Never give up on tomorrow, today is just a moment and it passes and with luck we continue to have more moments. You will laugh in life, you will cry. But you can’t have light without dark, or you wouldn’t appreciate the light when it comes.

Essence of Beauty

Heading to the beach! We all know the reason we pay so much for housing, and well, everything in San Diego is because of the amazing weather and stunning beauty of our local beaches. Whether you prefer Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla Shores, or the award winning beaches of Coronado Island, you can’t help but appreciate the picturesque landscape. Whether you decide to stay in the local area, or travel to distant lands you have to have the perfect beach day look. Sun, sand and waves are the inspiration for a great beach look.

It’s important to make sure you protect your skin from harmful UV rays with at least an SPF 15 foundation primer or moisturizer. I like using a tinted moisturizer or a CC cream instead of foundation with a concealer for beach looks, since they provide a nude look and give your skin a dewy, healthy look. It’s probably the one place you can embrace that shine on your forehead and nose if you have oilier skin.

• Create sun-kissed skin that glows by using heavy bronzers and shimmery highlighters, with heavier emphasis on cheeks, chin and forehead. Contouring and highlighting can be tricky, so one day when you have time, step outside on a sunny day and take a selfie. Wherever you see the natural bright spots vs. shadows, this provides a good place to start with the highlighters (bright spots) and bronzers (shadows). Obviously avoid shading under the eyes… no one needs help looking tired!

• When it comes to eye shadow, simple neutral tan and golden hues that resemble the sand work best. You can never go wrong with a gold shimmery eye shadow, from the fairest skin tone to the deepest shade of ebony. If you’re going for a more laid back look, skip the eyeliner and go straight for a black mascara. If you’re feeling bold, keep your liner tight to the eyelash line.

• When choosing a lip look, keep it simple with a neutral gloss or for a more defined statement grab a coral lip color to add some color to your look.

The true key to achieving the perfect beach look can be found in one simple word... WATERPROOF.

There are so many great products on the market now that are both cream and/or waterproof. There are even waxes to keep your eyebrows in place. If you should dare to actually get in the water, there’s no reason to compromise your beautiful make up!

Page 58: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

When you’re called to party!Vegas, Miami, LA... whatever your party destination is, this is the time to bring all the drama out and fi nd your inner diva... which in my world means it’s time for glitter!

• Do your foundation after you’ve done your eyes. When working with glitter or any type of loose powder, it’s guaranteed you will have fallout. You’ll end up having to redo the foundation anyway. You can get your glamorous eyes complete, then use a baby wipe to clean the excess off your skin before putting on your foundation.

• When you shop for glitter, make sure you try it on your skin. Each color will look different on different skin colors. Also, remember when you’re putting on an eye shadow underneath, it will also change the color.

• Don’t try and apply glitter to a cream based eye shadow, you’ll just get frustrated. Invest in a glitter adhesive. They are generally, clear liquid and will help keep the glitter right where you want it. It also works well with pigments and shimmers, but will increase the intensity of them by quite a bit.

• Once your glitter is on, use a liquid eyeliner to finish the look on the top eyelid. Pencil eyeliner will usually just push the glitter around, and won’t provide a dark enough line to compete with the glitter.

• Don’t forget your false lashes!! If you’re not ready for that, at least get a mascara that gives you that false lash look.

With so many options for colored glitter and shimmer eye shadows on the market, all that glitters is glitter. Even if you’re not comfortable with a lot of color on your face, a nice neutral shimmer on your eyelid with a black eyeliner will take any look from fi ne to fabulous. I have a couple of great tips for working with glitter that will keep your sanity and eyeballs intact.

A Day at the RacesOne of the dividends of living in San Diego is its proximity to beautiful Del Mar, home of the Del Mar Racetrack and its crowd-pleasing, chapeau fashion statements on opening day. Following the trend the Kentucky Derby’s opening day, it looks like we’re in for a lot of vibrant color from the fashionistas this year. The perfect pairing for these bold colors and large hats continues to be a neutral eye and a bold red lip. But did you know that all reds are not created equal? You can find your perfect red, by knowing how to select color based on your skin’s undertones.

• Fairer skin and those pink undertones will often do well with an orange based red. Most of the colors that show more of an orange tint in their swatches, will actually warm your skin up instead of washing it out. Also, the deeper red you go, the more vampy the color will look on your skin. Selecting a lip color that’s too dark will more than likely wash your face out.

• Olive toned skin can sway either way, depending on how dark you are. If you have a lighter olive complexion, a red with orange may look great on you. However if you have yellow undertones the red will almost look neon and a little off-putting. If you select a color that seems to be a little too bright, line your lips with a brown lip liner and apply the red to that. The subtle hint of brown will tone your lip down and give it an amazing gradient texture.

• Darker complexions should always look for reds that are blue based. Something a little deeper and darker, that has a touch of berry to it. I’ve actually found that shopping for reds has been simplified, since there are so many new brands that are geared toward women of color. They take the guesswork out of the color selection.

When you rock red lipstick, it’s best to keep the rest of your face pretty neutral to keep the focus where it should be... on those luscious lips. For more inspiration, find me on Pinterest at www.pinterest.com/allfrillsbeauty.

The Statement Necklace

Photographer: Raoul BeltrameModel: Jacqueline Depaul

After years of long boho chains necklaces are moving back up to the collarbone.Style mavens like Michelle Obama have been rocking the statement-making look for years, but now the jewelry trend is becoming more and more prevalent. Bib necklaces, layered necklaces, and unique metalwork have added an extra flair to basic red carpet dresses.

Statement necklaces are wearable art. They are the conversation starter, the show stopper, the jaw dropper. Statement necklaces can be geometric collars, earthy baubles, or sparkly bib design. Big, bold shapes are key, and bright, attention-grabbing colors with lots of detail are the season’s must- have pieces. The statement necklace can be worn over a matching high neckline, or a lower well shaped one, and the trick for wearing larger pieces is finding necklaces that are lighter in weight.

Our spread features the one-of-a-kind statement necklaces from designer Joe Vilaiwan of Vilaiwan Fine Jewelry. His hand-crafted statement necklaces are made from quality stones, shells, and other authentic materials. Combining the jewelry with fashion forward looks from current brands completes the look.

Full Figured Fashion Week is equivalent to the Oscar’s for the plus size industry. The creator and founder of the event, Ms. Gwen Devoe, has done an incredible job putting together a week-long event that is dedicated to highlighting the plus size industry in a positive way. A number of designers and models submit their portfolio hoping to be selected to be a part of this wonderful event. This event is filled with fashion, beauty, and glamour; but of course in a plus size way!

Every year Ms. Devoe selects one lucky model to be the FACE of the Full Figured Fashion week. For all curvy/plus size models this is a dream come true. This year the lucky model who was selected is none other than Ms. Bree Woodley of New York City.

Bree Woodley is not only a beautiful model on the outside, but she is also a beautiful person on the inside. She has welcomed the responsibility and everything else that comes along with being the face of a national event including the influence she now has over other models as well as young girls who are looking up to her.

Get to know Ms. Bree Woodley! FFF Week is considered the Oscar’s for the Plus Size Industry. What made you audition to be the face of FFF Week 2014? What was your response when you were chosen?

I auditioned to become the Face of FFF Week because I felt what Gwen Devoe and her team were looking for in a spokes model was everything I possessed naturally. The story behind my reaction is priceless and I will never forget the day. I was in a philosophy class when I received a message from Miss Gwen Devoe asking me to contact her as soon as possible. My reply was very cool and collected, a cute and simple "sure". Of course, I was dying inside so I excused myself from class to scream up and down the halls before I made the call. Everyone on the 6th floor was looking at me like I had more than a couple loose screws

If I could change one thing about the industry in general, I would eliminate stigma. Stigmas of any sort holds up any sort of progression. I am all for accepting the uniqueness of every person. We are all uniquely divine! It’s stupid to try to fit anyone into categories. I will continue to push this fight and hopefully shed light on the idiocy of our current limitations. What inspired you to become a plus size model and what sets you apart from the other models?

but I really could've cared less at that point because I already knew what was coming.

What is the one thing you are looking forward to this year at FFF Week?

It’s hard to pinpoint one thing because honestly I'm looking forward to everything but since you're twisting my arm, I'm really excited to connect and network with some amazing people and build authentic relationships.Being the face is a great experience and an even greater responsibility because you are getting looked at as a role model for young girls. How are you handling that responsibility and what is the one thing you will tell the young girls who are looking up to you about this experience?

In my everyday life, I strive to be a positive influence. Not only am I the Face of FFF Week, but I hold several responsibilities of being a big sister, an older cousin to so many little ones, a friend, and the list goes on and on. I know the power of my influence and I realize that I constantly have eyes on me. I don't strive for perfection. I simply live by the philosophy that when you know better you do better, and every day I'm learning and growing. Advice that I will always share to everyone is to take time to learn who you are and what you want. There is no wrong way to progress as long as you are moving. Mistakes are meant to be learning experiences because there is no how-to guide on life and quite frankly the learning lesson wouldn't be as valuable if we just knew everything.

Contrary to Beyonce's famous lyrics; I didn't just wake up like this. I've fought tough battles to be the person I wake up loving each day and I only look forward to evolving into someone I can only love and respect more.

Plus size models are getting more recognition but not enough. If you could change one thing about that what would it be and why?

I'm not down with the label 'plus size' model. I've never considered myself to be anything but a natural model. I am a photographer and I enjoy being the subject of my shoots from time to time. I also enjoy working with other brilliant photographers who enjoy getting creative with me.I'm not sure what sets me apart from other models, I'll just chalk it up to us all having a different approach. What is next for you?

Free Comic Book Day 2014

Most people wouldn’t understand Free Comic Book Day but let’s just say in this world, this realm of possibilities today is the equivalent of Black Friday. The task of attending an event like this doesn’t boil down to “show” or “no-show”. Individually there are well calculated, measured and carefully executed plans; to paraphrase Boromir from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, One does not simply walk into Free Comic Book Day.

Assuming you aren’t a beginner or lookie loo most people generally fall into one of two categories: Cosplay or Collector. There are other categories but in the interest of time we will defer those groups and talk about the two larger groups.

Cosplay is what your grandparents would call “dress-up” and yes that does extended to dressing as the opposite gender if your hero is cool enough. You’re probably thinking to yourself “Oh, this guy is dressed like a comic book character…” Let me assure you, not all of these guys are 90 pound weaklings and even if they are you might want to open a few comic books to get a little back story .

Collectors are the ones that you really have to be careful dealing with. Deep down you may snicker but you should keep a couple of things in mind: the Cosplay people spent time and money getting ready and won’t throw down unless it comes down to life, liberty or property; the collector will fight you to the death for that underpriced copy of Batman Volume 1 Number 428. Collectors have a Fight Club meets Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome type mentality when it comes to finding those hidden treasures.

The next task is finding the perfect ground to make your last stand or at least pose for your adoring public. San Diego has a variety of events annually but nothing prepares you for a man in a mask quite like the downtown nightlife. Sure, it isn’t Los Angeles or Vegas but we’ll take ours. There are several stores in the San Diego area and each has something for everyone. You might be brand loyal but you aren’t comic book store loyal.

Life can be quite adventurous depending on the expectations you have. I, like many people, sat up the night before counting down the hours until the comic book stores open their doors on Saturday, May 3, 2014. San Diego is experiencing warmer than usual temperatures for this time of year but it doesn’t take away from the anticipation of launching an all out assault on local shop owners.

Page 89: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

Understandably not all comic book shops host a rock concert but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a show to put on. Movies like The Amazing Spiderman, X-Men: Days of Future Past, the Watchmen or the original 300 has drawn crowds out in record numbers. People want to experience on the big screen everything and more from reading. Our journey continues a short distance down the road.

Comickaze is local shop that takes the time to connect the people with the artist. Each year customers are treated to an autograph session and costumed supporters. Remember, Cosplay is still a huge part of what people expect to see. The event had something for older and young alike. Shops like this have a large number of specialty items ranging from bottle opens and neon signs to variant covered comics and collector item printings. For free comic book day these guys knew exactly who they were gonna call… not only did the Ghostbusters make an appearance but various elements of the Stars Wars, Transformers and Spiderman universe did also.

Comic book stores are geared towards all readers. It is very difficult to find a store that doesn’t have an age appropriate kids section. A variety of weekly issues are published by giants like Disney as well as small press publishers. Inventory isn’t limited to just comic books. Popular shows like The Walking Dead had a huge comic book cult following long before airing on television. So where do you go for free comic book day? Four places come to mind: Southern California Comics, Comickaze, Yesteryear Comics and San Diego Games & Comics; the essentials to coin a comic book phrase.

Southern California Comics host one of the largest, if not the largest, free comic book day events. The events had lines of comic enthusiast cruising circuits of tents leading into the store. The store houses new and classic comics, as well as rare figures, gravel novels and collected series of comic books. A musical guest, Digital Lizards of Doom, was invited this year to perform for fans waiting for a chance collect the promotional free books as well as comic books for their collection. Digital Lizards performed several of their songs, awing the crowd and ahead of their upcoming tour. Southern California Comics has made and will continue to make comic book royalty (.ie artist and writers) available to the public with face-to-face interaction no longer practiced at the San Diego Comic Con.

Page 90: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

www.thegoodsmag.co

Yesteryear comics’ were a little more reserved on Free Comic Book Day. It appeared that the customers decided to forgo the Cosplay and settle for some good old fashioned collecting. That isn’t to say that there wasn’t fun and excitement but that the fun and excitement was less visual. The customers were intensely focused on finding those final pieces for a collection; almost as if they were gathering that last Infinity Gem (possible spoiler for the direction of Marvel’s movie series). Yesteryear has a unique collection of Golden and Silver Aged comics that date back to World War II. If comic books offer a window to the imagination think of how different that window is compared to what one would see out of it today. May 31 writer James Tynion (Batman: Eternal) will be on hand to meet customers.

The final destination on this voyage is San Diego Games and Comics. If you were to guess that the name is an indication of what is offered you would be correct. Weekly shipments keep the new comics rolling in while older comics are mostly supported online. The real fun in this shop isn’t the neon signs or statues, graphic novels or the assortment of independent comics lining the wall but the year round various gaming tournaments. Gamers are giving the opportunity to sign-up, show their skills and survive if they can. Tournaments are geared for specific followings and well as age and skill appropriate gaming tournaments. Unlike most comic shop Games and Comics stays open a little later so feel free to drop in on your way home.

There are those that enjoy comic books but hate going into comic book shops (for some strange reason) and there are those that don’t have the ability due to location or deployment. Most local shops will do a comic book pull or hold for their customers. The rules are fairly simple: only list what you want, pay for what you ask for and if you aren’t going to be in for a while let the store know so they don’t freak out or give your stuff to someone else.So you’ve made it through this article and lived to fight another day. Hopefully you’ve learned a few things. One, nerds have fun (and rock out) so don’t make fun of them. Two, don’t judge a book by the cover; at least take time to read a few pages. Three, comic books have crossed all cultural, socioeconomic and ethnic boundaries. We’re all the same when we wait in line dressed like stormtroopers. Finally always stay after the credits…

The State of the Union:following list of events is a snap shot of what has happened so far this year. It doesn’t take into account news stories where a loss of life did not occur, life was loss without the use of guns nor does it take into account the everyday violence of the world:

June 8 – Las Vegas, NV shootings 3 killed (2 officers shot in a restaurant and 1 customer shoot at a local Walmart), gunmen (2) kill themselves

May 23 – Ilsa Vista, CA killings 7 killed, more than a dozen reported injured (3 stabbed the others were shot or hit by car,) gunman kills self

April 13 – Kansas City, MS Jewish center shooting 3 killed, gunman captured

April 2 – Fort Hood, TX shooting 3 killed, more than a dozen reported injured, gunman kills self

January 25 – Columbia, MD Mall shooting 2 killed, gunman kills self

The last 20 years or so has given medical technology a huge leap. While many applied sciences have advanced greatly there are still newer sciences that don’t have concrete data to give a “yes” or “no” answer. People look to psychologist and psychiatrist for the “why” behind the psychology of the horrible actions that play out in our society.

A large part of what has happened can be accredited to people needing treatment or not getting effective treatment mental or emotional issues. A solution that has been offered but comes with reported side effects often as dangerous as leaving patients untreated is medicating the symptoms.

Times are changingOver the years many things, including the perpetrator sometimes, has been blamed for violent, often fatal actions. Throughout history evil forces, demons, spirits and even the devil have received credit for chaos and destruction inflicted by man onto fellow men. There was a time when literature was the corruptor of souls and during various

In the evolving political landscape one of the most talked about topics in America focuses on the rise in mass shootings. The events of April 20, 1999 in suburban Colorado was one of the deadliest and most reported school shooting is US history conducted by two students with deep emotional and mental issues; yet here we are almost 20 years later and the country is still looking for a solution to keep not just our schools but all public areas open and safe.

Don’t tread on meLooking at the issue there are two very distinct issues with the first being gun control with respect to Constitutional rights. Many people look to our Founding Fathers for guidance on what is and isn’t acceptable in terms of firearms. If you read the Bill of Rights you may come across a little blurb about “the right to keep and bear arms”. The idea of bearing arms came from something that perhaps was a little deeper in meaning than just owning weapons for the sake of owning weapons.

The right to bear arms comes from a time when Colonial British rule was brutal in nature because English laws and traditions were more favorable for those of title and nobility. The ruling class knew that people with weapons had and will always have the ability to resist oppression. In overcoming oppression the founders of the United States emphasized the importance of empowerment through firearms.

I challenge anyone that says that go good has ever come from a gun to look at dead civilians (Mayan, Aztec, etc) and show me one person that wouldn’t have wanted a better way to defend themselves from invading forces. .

What lies beneathSo far in 2014 there has been a major (mass) shooting or an attempt almost every week. Looking back the events that have made national headlines there are a series of happenings that lead back to deeply disturbed people. The

themselves or others; specifically children. People don’t slip through the crack because in most cases the crack is wide enough to walk or fly a 757 jet straight through.

Traveling, hanging out at popular (or sometimes not so popular) spots gave people the ability to expose themselves to lifestyles and cultures outside their own. Now, it seems at times we are tough that we have to value the uniqueness of others while downplaying our own individual wealth. One example is how accommodating countries are to the Muslim culture and faith while simultaneously critical and dismissive of Christians, Jews and other cultures.

Law abiding citizensSadly enough these events have increased and taken us from within our protective bubble of believing that there is a time or place for these types of things to happen. A now and then series of events has turned into a weekly, bordering on daily, occurrence; yet people want tougher gun control measures. Tougher gun control measures seem like a good idea to those that look to the government for protection and imposed equality. Bad idea because most of the people that are highlighted in the evening news are these mental and emotionally sensitive people that gain access to weapons and not the citizens that, may rarely use their fire arm, prevent higher body counts or crime rates.

Should everyone have access to a fire arm? No. Do we let the fear people have of fire arms limit the ability of those who are responsible and law abiding to restrict our choice of how many and what types of weapon we have? Maybe, then again maybe not.

The two crushing realities in our country is first, somewhere we’ve failed to recognize, help and decrease tragedies (because I think it is hard to prevent human nature) in regards to those with mental health issues before they occur. Secondly, society has villainized inanimate objects in order to have a population that is more controllable, which historically hasn’t worked out too well for those that chose or were forced to be unarmed, regardless of the situation.

periods of music specifically the birth of rock music was blamed for outrageous behavior. Television and movies have often and perhaps will always bare much of the blames for social shifts. In the 1990s our society started blaming first-person video games for troubling behavior and now much blames shifts to the internet. I’m not sure that I’m looking forward to the next step in this evolution.

When the Oklahoma City and the Boston Marathon Bombing took place in 1993 and 2013 respectively we blamed and held accountable the bombers and not the bomb. The Oklahoma City bombing changed the way that people were able to access and receive components needed to build bombs and it also change safety features for future building; everything from safe parking distances, blast resistance glass and even windowless buildings. There is no doubt the Boston Marathon Bombing will implement changes.

The sad state of our country is people aren’t allowed to just have problems anymore. We live in a labeled-entitled society. There is no more sadness because now you have undiagnosed and untreated chronic depression. You are not longer comfortable being alone with your thoughts because now you have several anti-social disorder.

The season of meanThere was a time it would seem that these events happened at a particular time of year. April, historically, has been an active month for tragic events: Standoff in Waco, Oklahoma City bombing, Columbine school is shooting, Virginia Tech shooting and the Boston Marathon bombing.

Realistically there has been a decline in human relationships and interaction. I’m not speaking to scientific explanation rather a social explanation. Technology has allowed us to withdraw from interacting with each other. While I enjoy social media as much as the next person I don’t think online dating was ever a real substitute for getting out and meeting people.

Neighbors live in the same community for years and don’t know each other. I’m not saying you should know your neighbor’s life history or personal struggles but you may want to know their name. You may want to know them enough to say hello or to know if they are a danger to

The Signal 2014Spoiled GOODS

Director: William EubankRuntime: 95 minutesRating: PG-13

Cast: Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, Laurence Fishburne

Plot (what they want you to know):Three friends travel across country when they receive a mysterious message that sends them on an unexpected journey.

Plot (what you need to know): Road trips are hell. In the history of movies there has never (okay, maybe once) been a good time to detour from your planned route to explore a dirt road. Mysteries are great to read about… not experience first-hand especially if it means jail time or anal probes (which oddly enough might be related). Ghosts, aliens and weird country or desert people don’t give good directions and most importantly they aren’t your friends.

***Spoiler alert*** Katy Perry makes a hot alien (Katy Perry does not appear in this film).

What the deuce does it all mean?In the tradition of movies like Blade Runner, I-Robot and Event Horizon, The Signal is a great Sci-Fi thriller. The storyline had great progression and the special effects delivered during the right times; what you will see is a shift between what you have to do versus what your heart wants to do. In terms of positives the film maker brought originality and a message for those that dig deep enough to pick up on it.

While I’m sure this movie will havze a cult following along with a greater appreciation years from now, I don’t think people a ready for it. Like the aforementioned movies the thought process was a little too advanced, well-developed and focused on the shortcomings of human nature for people to care about the concept of the movie. Unfortunately in a time of intense real world happenings most movie goers are looking to numb their minds and checkout for a couple of hours; not look at the capacity of man.

A Summary in fifteen words or less: this is about the human spirit and our ability to adapt. Our recommendation: GOODS

The Traveling TraineeTraveling? Training? Can the two coexist? Yes, yes and yes! It is possible to effectively continue your training regime while traveling. Many people have careers that require traveling and of course hotel accommodations. Most of the time the hotels have that 60’s wall paper with the fixtures to match and an extremely out dated gym- reminiscent of a seventh grade P.E. class from the Wonder Years. Most personal trainers are not racking up the frequent flier miles but we do face the same obstacles as the “traveling trainee.” Clients do not want to be placed on a piece of equipment and told to do fifteen repetitions. Trainers must be innovative and creative with workouts, as do the traveling trainees. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your fitness level while traveling.

Bring Your Own EquipmentThe objective here is to continue your progress towards your fitness goals while traveling. There is no need to get over complicated. Use simple and effective bodyweight exercises with some creative modifications to keep workouts resourceful and flexible. These can be performed almost anywhere and with little to no equipment at all. Bodyweight exercises can include;

• Push-ups varying hand positions, foot positions and body angle

• Planks with varying base of support-single leg, single arm

• Various Crawling Patterns including- bear crawls, inchworms and Spiderman crawls

• Burpees

• Lunges

• Squats

Ask For GuidanceFor those that do train with a trainer, consider asking for a couple days of workouts. After all your fitness success is directly related to our success as fitness professionals. Those that do not train with a trainer also have resources for workouts including the internet and fitness magazines. Research a few exercises that look inspiring or enjoyable-this will help spark up those workout flames.

Execute A PlanIf you know that you are going to be traveling for a few days then plan time slots for workouts and execute the plan. Plan a minimum of two workout days for every five days of travel. Make certain you pack any equipment you might need including workout clothes. Even a few sets of push-ups and planks first thing in the morning can keep things moving along. Success is often determined by ones degree of dedication and commitment. Next time the boss sends you ten states away to meet with clients, pack those resistance bands, and drop down and do some bear crawls or purchase a suspension trainer and enjoy a workout.

The GOODS magazine reached out to RAW artists (of San Diego) for the opportunity to work with some of the best local talent. While we requested to work with a few artists RAW decided to present their best photographer: Lisa Kimberly. There are few photographers in this world that have the ability to stun people; like their photos, some photographers can capture your eyes, your imagination and most importantly your heart. Her photography is eclipsed only by her humility and the perfect storm that is her mind.

Viewing the images that Lisa Kimberly has created makes it hard to believe that the person with such a vivid imagination is a mild-manner, navy spouse who is driven by what many use as an escape. Lisa Kimberly will tell you that her photography isn’t an escape but one of the passions of her life. It isn’t often that an individual can escape into full time passion; more importantly the term escape shouldn’t be seen negatively because most of us transition ourselves into fantasy worlds by escaping throughout the day and freeing ourselves from responsibilities. Through her photography Lisa Kimberly gives you a glimpse into her world and a glance at who she was, is and will become.

Lisa Kimberly was nice enough to meet at Mission Valley mall in (need I say it) beautiful San Diego. We sat and spoke while enjoying the open-air area near the food court where the air carried the smell of several restaurants and the light hum of music. Before the interview officially started I spoke of how much I personally admired Lisa Kimberly’s work.AMA: First I’ll say that I’m a big fan of your photography.

LK: Thank you.

AMA: I looked at it and I was kind of blown away. When you think about your photography can you describe it for us?

AMA: Me personally, I’m not a big fan of Photoshop. I understand that a lot of people use it. What is your preference for Photoshop? You say you like to play around with it, do you go out and take pictures with the thought of hey I’m going to Photoshop this and combine pictures?

LK: Sometimes…but not all the time. I’m always going

to do something to a photo Photoshop even if it’s just

crop and level and brightness adjustments… or something

but I never leave a photo untouched. As far as major

Photoshopping, if it’s planned I just know it’s just another

tool for me. It’s an extension of the camera...an extension

of my brain and how I want it to end up looking. I’m just

using it to make the photo end up how I want it to appear.

AMA: That’s a great answer. I appreciate the creative side of things. Sometimes there’s a lot of thought goes into it and some of the best pictures are spur-of-the-moment.

LK: I think it’s good to not… it’s good to have a plan but

you don’t have to follow it all the time to the Nth degree.

LK: The best way I describe it is surreal, mixed with a

lot of introspection… whimsy, you know there’s humor

sometimes. There’s definitely some dark element there

too… and that’s mainly with my self-portraiture which

is also featured in my RAW artists’ page. Even with my

fashion photography, how little of it I’ve done, I like to

make it not just I shoot you and that’s it; I don’t want it to

look like real life. I want it to look sort of surreal and a

little bit magical but in a dark way.

AMA: I’m glad you said that you like your portraits to look surreal. One of the pictures that caught my attention was, want to say, a martini glass with someone falling into it.

LK: Oh. You mean a fish bowl.

AMA: Was it a fish bowl?

LK: A fish bowl with a girl sort of over it and a fish inside.

AMA: Yes, can you tell me about that. What was the influence behind that?

LK: That was not planned. I was with a friend shooting

at a studio where she works downtown and she was making

her own picture using a fishbowl. So she was putting

it (fishbowl) all around the room and taking shots and

so I was off to the side taking my own shots. That was

a random shot of the fish bowl. In a different room I

tried to do a levitation photo using myself as model so it’s

actually two pictures combined into one. Later, several

weeks later actually I was at home with Photoshop I was

looking through my images of that day and I said what can

I do with this. I decided to mix the one of me levitating

which didn’t work out. The original photo didn’t work out.

That’s what I like to do I just play around in Photoshop

sometimes and some of my best pictures come out that

way.

GOODS Movie ReviewTitle: Earth to Echo

MPAA Rating: PG

Director: Dave Green

Starring: Teo Halm, Astro, Reese Hartwig

Runtime: 1 hr 31 mins

What It Is: Being separated from each other thanks to impending

construction that's tearing apart their quiet Southern

Nevada neighborhood in the guise of new freeway

construction, or so it seems. When the three friends

Alex, Tuck and Munch notice something weird going

on with all the cell phones when in the vicinity of

Alex's house. They've figured out its a map that leads

to something. What that is will not only change their

life but may lead to a last day together that they'll

never forget.

What We Think:This could very well be the modern version of Stand

By Me that being said it's hurt by a couple of things.

One is Astro. The young man who we previously saw

on The X-Factor is not an actor unfortunately. His

lack of nuance kills some scenes as he plods through

them. Reese Hartwig, while funny as Munch is

sometimes flat in his delivery one scene in particular

his line delivery takes me out of a heavy scene. Teo

Halm's turn here is opposite he's on point as Alex

a boy whose been through the system, and has

abandonment issues, he makes Alex someone we care

about, and we can't wait to see his part in this journey.

Our Grade:B+, For a kid friendly flick this is a great coming of

age film that sees us putting ourselves in our 12, 13

year old shoes. The acting isn't all that great, but

damn it if the effects on the titular extra-terrestrial are

fantastic. Some of the parts within this film seem like

stretches, but if your looking for a good family time at

the movies this will do just fine. It has all the elements

to make a great summer surprise. It's a kids film about

a small alien who just wants to go home, and there’s

bikes...sound familiar.

WHAT MADE You WAnT To BE A PHoTogRAPHER?

As a kid in the 70’s I use to take photos with my instamatic camera. A family friend said to me that I should get into photography. So I started taking photography classes in high school developing and printing my own black and white film in the class photo lab. After high school I took more classes in college in Black & White, color, advertising photography, and video and film making. In 1979 when I was watching TV on the news as they covered a two day event that was happening at Vacation village now known as The Paradise Point resort about a Photo Day event, called Mission Bay Photo Festival with models and cars that was a two day event. So the next day I went to the event for my first time photographing models. In 1980 when I brought my house I have my wheelchair ramps installed. The construction worker was also a part time professional photographer and told me about a magazine called “Western Photographer”. They had a calendar of events and reports on the Photo Days (Model Shoots) in Southern California. In San Diego MDA had a fundraiser from the Photo Day events at Seaport Village and hotels that I also volunteer that the events and attended others all over Southern California. In 1984 I and three other amateur photographers started an organization called Glamour Photographers International for glamour photographers and to sponsors events. We started model shoot events in Southern California from San Diego to Los Angeles and still in business today.

COSPLAYOn April 19, 2014 the Anaheim

Convention Center hosted Wonder Con; an annual event dedicated to all things sci-fi and

fantasy. Tens of thousands of diehard fans descended on the local community bringing fun and excitement to people of all ages.

If history has taught us anything we should know fashion may have some odd yet interesting periods. A growing trend in recent years has come from the world of sci-fi, fantasy and comic book enthusiast and has transitioned from small screen, silver screen or print to everyday life for some. That era is defined by people dressing in the rolls of their favorite famous and often infamous characters or simply Cosplay.

The World of By Alvin Miller Abraham

Page 139: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

www.thegoodsmag.co

The Cosplay community has near Hollywood level talent in creativity and ability when it comes to costumes design and creation. What may have started as a one-time thing for small conventions has turned into full time work for those that are able to attend various conventions or make paid appearances. Cast out the old stereotypes about people that read comic books. These aren’t your father’s “nerds”.

It is likely the community and world of Cosplay will continue to grow as annual events like, Wonder Con, Comic Con and other conventions catering from gaming to anime or Star Trek to Star Wars continue to draw record crowds. Cosplay doesn’t seem to be a flash in the pan or a fad that is likely to go away anytime soon. In fact more people will be drawn to this new and expanding arena as pop culture continues to encourage individuality.

Kids, large and small, no longer have to wait for Halloween to see their favorite characters. The next superhero or adventurer is only a mirror away. Be brave, be bold and by all means be careful before dawning that cape or cowl and above all else make sure you ask yourself one question: Is today a GOODS day?

Juniper & Ivy, Little ItalyThis new kid on the block made a grand entrance and silenced the naysayers with a solid sweep of stunning menu items. It’s positive reviews are stacking up and the venue itself is a feast for the eyes. Settle in at the bar or enjoy the lower level: They feel worlds away from each other due to clever design. Pull up to the chef’s table kitchen-side or the upstairs private dining room is available: Either way, the hardest choice will be the food. Will it be the Tune Tartare with Asian Pear, Pine nuts, and Mango Yolk or the Prawn & Pork Rigatoni? Freshly made in house of course, with a Brooklyn gravy and Burrata.

SD locals know what they love and don’t hesitate to give online feedback. A couple clicks on Yelp.com will prove there is hyped, highly rated and rave-reviewed restaurants all over the county to choose from. We’ve narrowed it down and have ten local must tries: Consider it a San Diego Bite Bucket List.

REVIEWING REGIONALLY: Eat SD!

Phil’s BBQ, MidwayIt’s most reviewed restaurant on Yelp in San Diego and is holding onto the title despite being closed for renovations earlier this year. It’s a must try if you’re a local (or a visitor) and one of San Diego’s claim to fame restaurants. Check the online “BB-Queue Cam” to note the line times (Oh, and there WILL be a line) then indulge in a baby back rib dinner, complete with secret sauce and a long list of sides to choose from like Corn-on-the-Cob, Sweet Baked Beans, or Macaroni Salad. The Pulled Pork Sandwich (Dubbed the BBQ Broham®) is a solid alternate to the slabs of meat and don’t forget the famous Whoopie Pie on your way out.

BY TRISH SANDERSON

Claire’s On Cedros, Solana BeachThis breakfast joint and café is LEED® Platinum certified, extremely popular on the weekends, has hundreds of online reviews and is a worth the wait experience. Claire herself is a talented baker (insider info: She was the original creator of Milton's Multigrain Bread!) and uses her skills to operate with a wholesome community focus. The Clairecakes are outstanding: other notable items include the Salmon Cake Benedict with arugula, fresh tomato, covered in heavenly hollandaise and the Short Rib Hash with red potatoes-eggs at a

perfect poach. Lunch is also served, and dinner has kicked off for the summer months. The back patio is puppy friendly and boasts a romantic rep.

Urban Solace, North ParkMatt Gordon’s main masterpiece has an almost religious following, not to mention over two thousand Yelp reviews. Everything is the highest quality, “no artificial ingredients, fake sugars or other junk.” Start off with the addicting Warm Cheese Biscuits spread with Orange-Honey Butter and Smoked Tomato Jam, and then peruse the possibilities. The current menu features items like Braised Paso Grass-fed Beef Cheeks, “Not Your Momma’s Meatloaf” full of Ground Lamb & Pork and every Thursday night you’ll find a rotating prix fixe Vegetarian menu. The weekend Bluegrass Brunch is North Park tradition too!

Sushi Ota, Pacific BeachThe most reviewed (and highest rated) sushi-serving location in all of San Diego:It’s food as art, practically couture cuisine, amazingly fresh and stunningly created. Be forewarned: when you arrive you’ll find a quintessential example of “it’s what’s inside that counts” and need to brave the nondescript location in a strip mall for a little (or a lot) Omakase. If you must order per the menu seek the sashimi section: O Toro, Mackerel, Tokobushi, Sweet Shrimp, Giant Clam, anything your hankering heart desires. Yelpers have rated it over 1800 times and the website claims it’s one of the top ten sushi joints in California. Market, Del Mar

Undeniably upscale dining, but you’ll be delighted with the laid back down-in-old-Del Mar vibe and tradition. You’ll find recently remodeled Market tucked back along Via De La Valle across from the Polo fields. The Local Grapefruit and Avocado Salad will absolutely refresh you, served with Purple Haze goat cheese, Arbequina Olive Oil, Date Sugar and Toasted Pistachios. A wood burning brick oven was added early in the year, the service is top notch and of course, with Carl Schroeder sourcing hyper local ingredients at the helm, you’re in good hands.

Harney Sushi, Old TownWith well over a thousand Yelp reviews and counting, the people have spoken! You’ll find acclaimed sushi and perfected Japanese cuisine on the menu, and what’s more, you can eat with a clean conscious. Harney is committed to sustainable products in their dishes and follow the Monterey Bat Aquarium Seafood Watch recommendations. Reviewers love the “Flaming Lip,” a tempura fried cali roll with cream cheese, topped with spicy mayo, jalapeno and sriracha. The Mussels are also fantastic, locally sourced from rad C-bad and served in sesame, ginger, garlic and kimchee infused miso broth with a crusty baguette.

Native Foods Café, EncinitasEverything on the fast-casual menu is non-dairy, homemade, 100% plant based and downright delicious. Try the Soul Bowl: Southern Fried Native Chicken with hearty red beans and brown rice, steamed veggies and kale dressed with ranch, BBQ sauce and served with homemade cornbread. The beverages are hand crafted too, we love the Lavender Lemonade (French lavender steeped with fresh lemons and a touch of organic sugar) and the Watermelon Fresca with mint and organic agave. Locations are popping up all around the country, with over seven scheduled on the website for 2014 (hello Point Loma!) and each time the locals rejoice!

Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen, OceansideThe options here tip the cap to San Diego’s obsession with all things pork related. Relax, settle in with the locals and get to know the community: they’re committed to the Slow Food Movement and create their American comfort cuisine with care. The menu starts with a series of “Piggybacks” like molasses glazed brussels & bacon and cheddar cheese bacon grits. Next you’ll find the smoked duck salad (house cured muscovy duck ham, celery, date, sherry vinaigrette, pea tendrils and juniper mustarda) and we haven't even hit the entrée options yet! Chicken & Dumplings, house-made pasta: Prep for the food baby, it's worth every bite.

In the spotlight

Over the past year our beautiful city has been under a microscope and in the national spotlight due to the actions of the former mayor. As we try to turn the page from that ugly chapter in our city’s history the voters hit the polls a few months ago and elected two-term City Councilmember Kevin Faulconer as the new Mayor of San Diego.

Now all eyes are on Mayor Faulconer to see if he can unite our city and bring integrity back to City Hall. Despite his hectic schedule I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Mayor Faulconer and I asked him a few questions about his plans for our great city:

AFTER 8 YEARS ON THE CITY COUNCIL WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RUN FOR MAYOR?It was time to restore trust and integrity back into our city. Restore our neighborhoods and create real quality jobs. It was time to focus on growing San Diego.

DOES THE CITY HAVE ANY PLANS ON BRINGING MORE MAJOR EVENTS TO SAN DIEGO TO SUPPORT THE FASHION INDUSTRY, IF SO WHAT ARE THESE EVENTS?I want to say that San Diego is Back and OPEN FOR BUSINESS! Our focus is to empower and stand behind the small businesses in San Diego to bring more major events to our city so they can succeed. San Diego is filled

with so many talented and creative people that need our support for their work to prosper and shine.

LAST MONTH YOU POSTED YOUR FIRST VIDEO TO THE CITY EMPLOYEES TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO BRING NEW IDEAS TO HELP IMPROVE THE CITY’S GOVERNMENT. WHAT NEW IDEAS DO YOU HAVE TO IMPROVE SAN DIEGO AS A CITY?Creative and innovative people make things happen and that is what I want not only the city’s employees to be, but the residents of our city as well. We need everyone to think out of the box and make things better for San Diego.

EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW WILL YOU BE DOING ANYTHING TO HELP THE CHARGERS BUILD A NEW STADIUM IN THE CITY? The City of San Diego is extremely important to the Chargers and the Chargers are important to the city. We will be working on a package to get them to stay!

FUN FACT QUESTION: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE STORES TO SHOP AT?

I go where the sales are (laughing)!

After speaking with him it is clear that Mayor Faulconer is ready to take our city to new heights. He is very passionate about helping small business owners and entrepreneurs, which is very exciting for all of us. San Diego wanted change and I believe that we got it!

Fever CharmBy Ian Miller

Page 148: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

White Stripes and Black Keys are known for their swagger-laden sound. It’s an attitude that take time to develop and their particular flavors are born from a much earlier time.

That’s why it’s particularly surprising to hear that same brash confidence in the sound of Fever Charm. It’s surprising because the members of Fever Charm are between the ages of 17 and 21. The punk and blues genres that they sit squarely between are best suited for dimly lit bars, which they seem completely at home in, despite most of the band’s inability to legally imbibe alcohol for a couple more years.

The Oakland-based band’s “West Coast Rock & Roll,” released earlier this year, is their first full-length album and is strong throughout all its 10 tracks, but like any album there are standouts. And like great albums, there is a balance between variety and continuity that keeps the listener from getting bored but presents a consistent story.

The album opens up with “Take Me Out,” a bouncy number that fits nicely in the power pop category and revels in themes of newly found love. The sound is reminiscent of Supergrass and Rocket From the Crypt.

Page 149: The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine "2014 Summer Issue"

www.thegoodsmag.co

Tracks 2 and 3 (“Broke Down Betty” and “Call Me When You Get Lonely” respectively) slow the pace down considerably, introducing the swagger that makes you do a double take if you’re aware of the ages of the band members.

“Modern World” is easily one of the more memorable tracks on the album with its classic hooks and lyrical testament to the challenges of technology. Written by anyone older, the topic would come across as “grumpy Luddite grandpa” but given that the message is coming from those born into technology, the idea is a bit more novel. Maybe it’s perfectly consistent given the old souls in the sound of this music. Carrying through this theme, the very next track is by far the most in-your-face rock akin to The Rolling Stones or Jet.

“Sin Conviction” is the standout track of the album. It doesn’t sound anything like the rest of the album and bucks the usual verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus formula. It harkens of Kings of Leon but is still very much its own song. It’s got a unique feel, with builds and cutouts, and a big open sound with lots of depth, like a story that you don’t want to end.

Fever Charm is now working on a new EP produced by Matt Noveskey (IAMDYNAMITE, Blue October) and playing selectively across the US. Follow them on tumblr at http://fevercharm.tumblr.com/.

LISTEN TO THIS Keyshia Cole

By Michael T. Brewer

R&B belle Keyshia Cole released one of six songs she free-styled for her upcoming sixth album Point of No Return. On “Next Time,” Keyshia is lamenting over her long suffering relationship with her now estranged husband Daniel “Boobie” Gibson. Against a spiraling synth, 808 drum loop and moody bassline, Keyshia recounts her emotions of sorrow. The pain comes across with each passing note she sings. Profound sadness and melancholy languishes as she sings “The crazy part about it is I took you right back / I thought you were a changed man / I tried to work it out for the sake of my family / But you took my kindness for weakness and my love for granted.”

Single: Gold Star Genre: Electronic Release Date: April 15, 2014

New Orleans’ bred rapper Pell releases his second single from his soon to be released follow up LP Floating While Dreaming. Produced by Roc Nation’s Lugwig Göransson best known for his work with Childish Gambino and Haim. The song showcasing an ethereal sonic blissfully dancing upon the smooth 808 drum. Pell delivers an amazing staccato flow and switches gears to singing a few lines during the pre-chorus. The song transforms into a classic 90s groove before it ends suddenly like a dream.

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Tristen releases her dainty diddy Gold Star. An enchanting folk-synth pop track has clever and insighful lyrics. Its melodic and dreamy. The artificial and organic play well with

each other set to Tristen’s warm blissful vocal arrangement. Inside there’s bits of nostalgic 60s Pop structure underneath wispy electronica.

Indie Pop singers Wolfy and Simon Curtis unite to for super duo Wrathschild on the enchanting power pop ballad “Fall Into Love.” The bubblegum sing-a-long chorus sounds like something from the early 2000s. Its an infectious song layered with Wolfy and Simon’s pitch perfect vocals. The sugar confection that is “Fall Into Love” incorporates music trends of old and new blurring the lines of throwback mashup. The cheerleader chant during the middle eight sets off into a huge pulse of teen spirit. Definitely a strong pick for Prom Song of 2014.

Title: Drakengard 3 Platform: Playstation 3 Genre: Action Role-Playing Release Date: May 20, 2014 Published: SquareEnix Developer: Access Games

Recently, SquareEnix has finally stabilized themselves by cranking out titles in a shorter span of time. Most recently releasing Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and Bravely Default. Striking out again on a once assumed “Dead IP” (Intellectual Property), Drakengard 3 was announced in March of 2013 which by this time, the game was 60% complete. The game is being developed by another smaller development team Access Games who’s known for their work for the survival horror Deadly Promotion released in 2010 for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The approach to this game was to create a great single player experience with incredible action elements seemlessly with role-playing lens. Also, the producer Takamasa Shiba wanted to create a game that could cater to hardcore role-playing game audience. The

game features a mysterious and traitorous woman named Zero partnered with a dragon named Mikhail to slay her five sisters who rule various regions of the world. Though this is the third entry in the series, the game is a prequel to the entire series and connected to the Drakengard spin-off Nier. In other words, this game can be enjoyed by those who have never heard of this series before. With heavy emphasis on combat balanced with story telling, the game features two types of gameplay: Zero’s hack-and-slash combat and Mikhail’s aerial combat. The player will switch between both styles in order to complete the objectives. Drakengard 3 will be releaed exclusively on Playstation 3 May 20, 2014 with a special edition sold exclusively on the publisher’s website.

Title: Killer Instinct Platform: Xbox One Genre: Fighting Release Date: November 22, 2013 Published: Microsoft Studios Developer: Double Helix, Iron Galaxy, Rare

Microsoft’s acquisition of Rare Studios (Perfect Dark, Donkey Kong) in 2002 had many wondering what was next for those old IP’s that laid dormant and forgotten. Perfect Dark Zero was released on Xbox 360. Largely, many wondered what would become of the late great Killer Instinct franchise. Ten years later, Microsoft applied for the renewal of the KI trademark. Many speculated that the franchise may be revived. At the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2013, Microsoft announced Killer
