My first response was to try to reassure you that in the last 148 years, God had never let down St. Paul’s and that God wasn’t going to start now. I assured you that the parish would survive, and it has. It not only has survived, but we’ve had a great year! I keep detailed time sheets and mileage records so that the wardens and vestry know how I’m using my time and how much I’m driving my car on parish business. I’ve gone back through my time sheets and my calendar to get a sense of the past year. We can celebrate the fact that our strengths and our “highs” far outweigh our weaknesses and our “lows”. I think that our work with the Rev. Barb Schmitz, our transition consultant, has given us a good sense of that. However, I’ve noticed that it seems to be a parish tendency to focus on the negative rather than to cheer the positive. So I’d like to point out just a few of the good things that have happened in the past year. We have many strengths and highs to celebrate. In the interests of brevity I am listing them here: The first one, for me, has been my home visits to 99% of our active parishioners. (I hope to make it 100% in the fall.) I’ve really enjoyed beginning to get to know you. Generous and effective outreach projects. Improved financial stewardship. The 2014 parish budget was better funded than the one for 2013. The Bible study group which grew from four people last October to ten this past spring. Successful fundraisers, not only financially, but also in the way that so many people contributed and worked together. Our Christmas, Easter and Pentecost services and celebrations. A good visit with the bishop in January. The Rev. Barb Schmitz’s transition consulting and subsequent report, which is helping St. Paul’s move forward toward eventually calling a permanent priest.

My first official Sunday at St. Paul’s was on October 6, 2013. My sense of the parish was one of high anxiety, and even panic following the departure of the Rev. Kathlyn Schofield. In the interests of brevity I am listing them here: • The first one, for me, has been my home visits to 99% of our active parishioners. (I hope to make it 100% in the fall.) I’ve really enjoyed beginning to get to know you. • Generous and effective outreach projects. • Improved financial stewardship. The 2014 parish budget was better

funded than the one for 2013. • The Bible study group which grew from four people last October to ten

this past spring. • Successful fundraisers, not only financially, but also in the way that so

many people contributed and worked together. • Our Christmas, Easter and Pentecost services and celebrations. • A good visit with the bishop in January. • The Rev. Barb Schmitz’s transition consulting and subsequent report, which

is helping St. Paul’s move forward toward eventually calling a permanent priest.

• The wonderful celebration which the parish gave me for my 30th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. Thank you!

• Welcoming our newcomers: Bob and Judy Olmstead, and Aaron and Tristyn Judd, their four young daughters, and Aaron’s brother, Christopher Rudnick.

• We also welcomed officially our not-quite-so-newcomers who hadn’t been officially recognized when they joined St. Paul’s, and welcomed back the Rev. Charles Grover and Mrs. Joan Grover upon their return to Chittenango from Texas.

• We rejoiced with Scott and Meghan Titus and their son Matthew upon the birth of Baby Grace. • A very successful Vacation Bible School. • Mike Furtado’s (and assistants) work on the parish house. It looks great. Thank you Mike, Brian

Buyea, and Jerr Jackson! • Dorothy Norlander’s gift of new and handsome upholstery for the furniture and pews in the

church, executed by Barbara and John Tafe. Thank you Dorothy, Barbara and John! These are just some of the highlights of the past year which involved the whole parish. I’m sure that you can list more. I believe that we have a good foundation upon which to build for our second year together. So congratulations St. Paul’s! I hope that we can let go of our concern about surviving and begin to focus on, and enjoy thriving. Love and Blessings, Elizabeth+

FROM SURVIVING TO THRIVING

As I remarked in my “Congratulations St. Paul’s” review of the past year, the parish seemed to be anxious about survival when I began my first official Sunday on October 6, 2013. Although our financial stewardship improved for 2014, our parish budget basically remains one of survival, “cut to the bone with no fat on it,” to quote our chair of the Finance Committee. With God’s love and grace, St. Paul’s not only is surviving, but we’ve had a great year with many achievements and successes. SO I am inviting us all to let go of our concern about surviving and instead to focus on and enjoy thriving. Last year during out stewardship campaign I emphasized giving to God through St. Paul’s in gratitude for God’s many blessings. That always is a major reason for giving. However this year I’d like to change the preposition from “through” to “at”. Let us show our gratitude to God AT St. Paul’s. Let us deepen and strengthen our relationship with God by building up the ways we can grow in God through the church. First, I would love to see the Adult Education and Spiritual Growth line item in the budget funded. The line item is there, but there is no number next to it. The church mission to its own members is very important. If we aren't growing in God at church where else are we going to? Funding the for the Adult Education and Spiritual Growth would help offset some of the cost of supplementary spiritual materials for all of us for Advent and Lent, might help with the cost of occasional guest speakers relevant to issues we discuss at Bible study or in adult education workshops, and possibly could help underwrite the cost of individual and group parish retreats. Also, as an important part of the parish’s spiritual growth, our Church School program funding really needs to be increased. $225.00 for the year is inadequate for curriculum materials and supplemental activities. Very often the Church School teachers have to skimp on materials, fund them from their own pockets, or turn to an individual donor. At our children’s baptisms, all of us promise “to support this person in his/her new life in Christ.” A good Church School program is everyone’s responsibility as we try to foster their spiritual growth and relationship with God. As we say so often, our children are the future of the church and our society. Similarly, the budgeted amounts for outreach, fellowship, and evangelism/newcomer ministries really need to be beefed up. While we are grateful for the generosity of individual donors who step up to help with needs as they arise, these ministries really are the responsibility of the whole church family and should be funded by all.

PAGE 5 THE GOOD NEWS VOLUME 10 ISSUE 5

Finally our parish secretary, sexton and organist are very important to the life and ministry of St. Paul’s. Unfortunately their salaries are not adequately compensating them for the time which they give to the parish. While we very much appreciate their gifts of time and self we need to try to pay them fairly. We also need to try to keep up with current salary levels for such positions. Due to our Finance Committee’s ingenuity and the generosity of individual donors who step forward when needed, we get by. But getting by doesn’t lead to thriving. St. Paul’s is blessed with God’s presence, and the good people, the commitment of many, and the talent to thrive. But like fertilizer on a garden, we also need financial nutrients to blossom, to strengthen our ministries both within and without St. Paul’s. When it comes time to prayerfully consider your giving to God at St. Paul’s please also consider making a pledge, no matter how modest, if you don’t pledge already. God has made an irrevocable pledge to us and always is faithful to promises which go way back to the Jewish roots of our faith. I invite us all to reciprocate by making a commitment to God’s presence and work at and through St. Paul’s. I also invite you to join me in proportional giving. The standard of giving in the Episcopal Church is a tithe of ten percent of one’s resources. If one is not already tithing, it is helpful to gradually increase the percentage of what one is giving over a period of time until one reaches one’s goal. This is more of a spiritual issue than a financial one. If anyone would like to talk with me about, I’d be very happy to try to be of any help. I also invite you to dream with me what St. Paul’s could blossom into with God’s help and ours through a more adequately funded budget. Thank you so much to you for all your gifts of time, talent, and financial support. Thank you for making a difference to St. Paul’s present and future. With affectionate gratitude, Elizabeth+ PS: Save the Date: On Sunday October 19th we’ll enjoy a special luncheon after church to celebrate our successes and achievements of the past year, and to reflect upon our financial stewardship for 2015. Please plan to join us.

From Surviving to Thriving continued...
