It’s time to celebrate the large, diverse group of homeowners who volunteer on a
variety of committees to improve the quality of life we enjoy at Buena Vida. We
would like to highlight some of the important contributions these neighbors made
this past year.
• COPS - These dedicated volunteers keep Buena Vida safe by giving a few hours a
week to patrol our community. Our safety record is excellent due to their efforts
and they deserve our utmost gratitude.
• Design Committee - This committee worked tirelessly to bring our renovation to
completion and restore the elegance of Buena Vida and they have done an
outstanding job.
• LITS Committee - This group developed the plan to replace our street trees
without a need for additional funding and were instrumental in researching the
replacement trees for the damage done by Hurricane Irma. The beauty of our
common property is thanks to their continuing work.
• Planning Committee - Our website was recently updated to include visitor pag-
es. Compliments to this group of hard working residents who are dedicated to
improving our unique lifestyle while also enhancing our competitive position
among 55+ communities in our area. We look forward to their recommendations
later this year.
• ARC Committee - They review applications from homeowners looking to im-
prove the exterior appearance of their home while ensuring these improvements
complement and enhance the look of our community.
• Finance Committee - Members ensure our fiscal stability by reviewing our
monthly financial reports and is instrumental in preparing fiscally responsible
budgets.

MESSAGE FROM THE PROPERTY MANAGER
By: , LCAM
Just a few thoughts as we enter the second month of 2018…
We are so excited for the anticipated Grand Opening of our new dining pavilion! It
feels as though the construction has taken so long, but as you know anything worth
waiting for usually takes some time.
The overall health and appearance of our community lakes is just one of the many
items at the top of our agenda at this time of the year. We are working closely with
our lake maintenance vendor and have already recognized the areas in need of some
attention and new plantings. Timing is everything and we are prepared to take ad-
vantage of the very small window we have to give our lakes the TLC they need.
Another very important task ahead is to update all pet registrations throughout the
community. Residents will be given new registration forms and plenty of time to up-
date their pets’ information shortly. We thank you for your cooperation in advance!

Maltzman’s musings
By: Bruce Maltzman
For those of you who believe that I have way too much time on my hands, this month’s column should permanently dispel all doubt. During the year, I collect news stories (all true) that tickle my funny bone. I can tell just how off beat they are by the extent of Sue’s “eyeball roll,” something that I receive with greater frequency as time passes.
SHOCKING A Knoxville, Tennessee man has been arrested for rigging the front door in an at-tempt to electrocute his pregnant wife. Sheriff Rick Staley called the case one of the “most bizarre domestic violence cases” he has ever seen. Michael Scott Wilson was charged with attempted aggravated battery on a pregnant woman. The woman’s fa-ther called the police after Wilson made suspicious statements about keeping the chil-dren away from the door, thus sparking Wilson’s arrest.
HIGH AGAIN A woman from Long Island, NY, due in court on marijuana charges, picked the wrong spot to reprise her crime. It seems that she parked in Chief of Police Bill Ric-ca’s parking spot before her court date when she was spotted by the Chief sitting there puffing away. “With all that smoke coming out of the car, it was like a Cheech and Chong movie,” said Ricca. “She could be in the joint for quite a while.”
POLICE STUN GUN SETS NAKED MAN ON FIRE (You can’t make this stuff up!!) Police in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, say that a naked man was yelling abusively when they tried to subdue him. Unfortunately, an officer deploying a stun gun struck a lighter in the man’s hand setting his chest hair and beard on fire. The police were able to extinguish the fire, after which to show his ap-preciation, the naked smoldering man punched one of them in the face. Evidence in-cluded both a smoking gun and a smoking man. (Sorry)
ALCOHOL RELATED INJURY South Carolina police reported that a 44 year old woman, who was angry at a man for returning home without beer on Christmas, beat and stabbed him with a ceramic squirrel. While she did not get arrested for animal cruelty, the police were convinced that she was indeed, “Nuts.” And finally these two items from the police “Lost and Found” file: A brick of cocaine was found in the 2000 block of South Ocean Boulevard, Delray. It can be picked up at the police station in exchange for long term sleeping accommoda-tions………..Someone reported losing a bottom set of gold teeth in the 100 block of Southeast Mizner Boulevard in Boca. No explanation was given, nor was any asked for. Some things you just don’t want to know!!

Trivia News
By: Linda Shapiro
Night of the Geniuses
Once again Trivia, on 1/15/18, had a terrific turnout of 9 teams. It was a night where
one might be forgiven for thinking one was really smart, as everyone knew the an-
swers to most of the questions. Of course, if one looked closely at the reality of the
night, one must admit that the questions were quite easy and we'd have to shrink our
egos back down to size. I offer, for your amusement, some of the questions. What for-
est did Robin Hood call home? Fill in the blank: Wolfgang Amadeus ____. Even the
riddle was easy: What has cities, but no houses; forests, but no trees; and water, but
no fish?
On the other hand, we had a question that would have been easy if we were, perhaps,
in our 30s or 40s today instead of adults of a certain age. It was astounding that even 1
team was able to gain a massive amount of half-time points by coming up with multi-
ple answers. My hat’s off to you if you can answer this question. Name each of the
eight main characters from the hit show "Saved by the Bell". First names are fine, but
5 extra points if you can include all last names!
The entire game was riddled with easy questions that kept the scores close, with the
exception of team The Boroughs. Astronomical scores were possible and the players
did not disappoint. Before the final wagers, scores ranged from 50 to 74. The final
question was to name the first 7 American presidents, in order. The Boroughs went
home victorious with 94 points!
Will the next night of questions be impossible or will our genius shine again? Find out
at the February 2nd Trivia Night, in the Ballroom at 7pm.

Movies and More
By: Bruce J. Maltzman
Good Golly, Miss Molly It’s certainly the best game in town; it may also be the best movie in town. Molly’s Game is the fascinating and at times riveting true story of Molly Bloom and how she came to run one of the largest poker games in the United States. Buying into Molly’s game could cost as much as a quarter of a million dollars, so it’s no surprise that her game included A-list movie stars, millionaires, a New York Yankee and even members of the Russian Mafia. Quite the mix.
Molly’s story begins as she tries to please her overbearing and abusive father by making the Olympic ski team. Molly, played glamorously by Jessica Chastain (who has already won the Golden Globe and is a guarantee for an Academy nod) has father issues as Larry Bloom (played by Kevin Costner) pushes her way too hard. This is juxtaposed with the wonderful father/ daughter relationship of her attorney and his daughter.
Molly’s Game jumps from the present, where she is arrested by the FBI, to the past which explains through voice over narration how she got to that point. Molly actually begins to run the game through happenstance and an unstable employer who ultimately trusts her enough to take control of the game.
Molly is a quick study and ultimately steals the game from her employer and sets up a first class game at a plush hotel replete with gourmet food and massage therapists. Quite the little entrepreneur.
Over a period of time Molly has her game stolen from her, but proves to be amazingly resilient and sets up yet another game through sheer tenacity and street smarts. My favorite scene in the movie occurs when a Russian art dealer attempts to buy into her game with a genuine “Monet.”
Ultimately Molly ends up in court, but not before her accrued earnings of four million dollars have been taken by the FBI. Her attorney, played conflictingly well by Idris Elba wants to turn all of Molly’s past iphone communications over to the FBI in return for a much reduced sentence, but Molly balks fearing all the lives that will be drasti-cally affected.
The film’s conclusion throws us a delicious curve ball that will leave you smiling. Actually you will be smiling long before that because Molly’s Game at two hours and twenty minutes flies by with a series of great scenes, not the least of which is a father/daughter confrontation at an ice skating rink in New York City.
Molly’s Game is certainly one of the better movies of the year and will be recognized as such when the Academy Award nominations come around...

Men’s club
By: John Barletta & Dennis Hart
The BV Men’s Club began its January 14th breakfast by welcoming over 80 members
in the Buena Vida Ballroom. President Dennis Hart announced there were seven new
members attending the Breakfast and introduced the new members and the
individual responsible for bringing in our new members. Our newest members are
Nico Doggett, Terry Siegall, Judd Gould, Herb Simkin, Peter Kroetsch, Leon Rosen
and Hal Chorney. Dennis thanked our Treasurer, Norm Silberman for his dedicated
service to the Men’s Club and reminded us who forgot that the annual dues were due
and could be dropped off at the Spa Desk. Dennis also reminded us that January’s
Lunch Bunch was at Tokyo Bay Buffet and the Grand Slam Tennis Hockey event was
January 25th.
Our guest speaker was Arnie Wexler. Arnie is a reformed compulsive gambler and
shared with us his gambling problems and how he was able to overcome his gam-
bling addiction. Arnie now works with individuals with gambling issues and has
written a book “All Bets Are Off.” Our thanks to Mr. Wexler for taking the time to
speak at our Breakfast and for being a very entertaining speaker.

speaking about Stem Cell technologies.
The next Men’s Club Lunch Bunch will be February 20, 2018 at Duffy’s Bar and Grill
located on Forest Hill Blvd.
We are always looking for fresh ideas, interesting programs, as well as new members,
so please spread the word.

Books and Authors Group
Continuing a string of appearances by authors of books under discussion, the club,
probably the first organized at Buena Vida, 14 years ago, will have the well-respected
novelist, Joan Silber, appear via Skype on Monday, Feb. 12, to discuss her most recent
book, "Improvement," which has been garnering very enthusiastic reviews and
appears on several lists of outstanding books of 2017.
"This is a novel of richness and wisdom and huge pleasure," said a reviewer in the
New York Times. "Silber knows, and reveals, how close we live to the abyss, but she
also revels in joy, particularly the joy that comes from intimate relationships."
In January, Andrew Gross, author of five novels with James Patterson and more than
a dozen mysteries under his own name, appeared via Skype to discuss two of his re-
cent books, "The One Man" and "One Mile Under," which are available in paperback
as well as online. "One Man" was a departure for Gross, who was inspired to write it
by the experiences of his father-in-law, a Holocaust survivor. It concerns an effort by a
young American who fled to the United States at the beginning of World War II and
who smuggles himself into Auschwitz on orders of Franklin D. Roosevelt to rescue
one man who has the mathematical formulas that would enable the United States to
construct an atomic bomb. "One Mile Under" concerns Ty Hauck, a private detective,
who comes to the aid of his goddaughter, a water-rapids guide, who believes a col-
league has been murdered.
At the end of the interview with Ms. Silber, those in attendance are encouraged to
make a donation to the author's favorite charity. Last year, when the journalist Dan
Barry spoke about "The Boys in the Bunkhouse," his book about retarded men forced
to work in a turkey-processing plant under trying conditions, those in attendance
gave to the Committee to Protect Journalists. At the Golden Globes ceremony last
month, Meryl Streep announced the awarding of a grant of $1 million to the commit-
tee.
Everyone is invited to the book-club meeting on Feb. 12 in the ballroom, whether you
have read the book or not.
Wine Club
Calling all patriots! February is the month Americans celebrate the birthdays of two of
our foremost Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and the Wine
Club salutes their accomplishments with a tasting of American wines and favorite
American foods.
36
February
While wine has been produced in this country for hundreds of years -- Thomas
Jefferson had a vineyard at Monticello, his Virginia home -- the quality of the wines
has only in recent years been recognized for their excellence and availability. Wines
are produced in virtually every American state, from California, Oregon,
Washington and New Mexico in the West, to New York, New Jersey and Maryland
in the East, to Texas, Georgia and Florida in the South and other states in between.
Owing to climate and experience, California is the leading producer of American
wines, but the wines from Oregon and Washington are giving California a run.
Accordingly, on Tuesday, Feb. 20, the members of the Wine Club will gather in the
ballroom at 7 P.M. to sample four wines, two reds and two whites, and see how the
wines match up against each other and complementary foods. New members are
always welcome, and socializing is encouraged. In fact, early arrival members are
being requested to save no more than two seats other than their own so that
everyone has a chance to find appropriate seating.
The cost of the evening's educational and social enterprise is $25 a person and there
is a 50-person limit. Those interested in attending should submit a check at the Spa
Desk to insure a place at the table. And don't forget to bring glasses for the tasting.
Current Events Group
While Congress and the Trump Administration wrestle with the problem of DACA
people, so-called "dreamers" who were brought to this country by their parents as
children and have lived here continuously but are not citizens, there are other immi-
gration issues that Washington believes need attention. Some of those issues will al-
so be discussed at the meeting.
In January, members of the group discussed "The Press vs. Trump, or Trump vs. the
Press," which led to a lively discussion. The group welcomed a number of new
members and has room for many more. There is no dues, there are no admission
fees and those who attend are encouraged to have fact-based statements to add to
the discussion.
When Dr. Robert Watson spoke last month in the ballroom about his most recent
book, about "the ghost ship of Brooklyn," he drew a crowd of more than 150 people,
indicating interest in the speaker and his topic but also about contemporary events.
If you have that interest, fear not. Help is here at Buena Vida.
The discussion will be held on Thursday, February 22 at 4 P.M. in the library
.

Musings From The Bald Wimp
“The True Skinny on Being Fat ”
By: Neil Goldman Hello Buena Vidans:
Most of us obsess over our weight. We weigh ourselves incessantly and live and die by those
numbers on the scale. Unfortunately, most of that is a waste of time. What we weigh is not
nearly as important as the composition of our body. How much of our body is composed of
lean body mass (LBM) and how much of our body is composed of fat is the true measure as to
whether we are fat or not.
As a general rule our subcutaneous fat (stored below the skin and above the muscle) is meta-
bolically inactive and requires no calories (i.e. – energy) to sustain itself. It may not look the
way you want it to look but it requires no metabolic activity, it is just “hanging around”.
Visceral fat (stored below the abdominal muscles in “the gut”) has some harmful metabolic
functions but does not require calories to sustain itself. On the other hand each pound of LBM
(muscle, bone, organs) is metabolically active and requires calories to sustain itself or to be
used. In an adult female that is approximately 12 calories per pound and in an adult male
approximately 13 calories per pound.
In the simplest terms LBM is good, fat is BAD. Muscle is about four times heavier than fat, SO
if you lost an inch of fat and gained a quarter of an inch of muscle you would weigh the same
BUT be thinner. That is the model we have to focus on not how much do we weigh. WHAT
IS MY BODY FAT? – THAT IS THE NEW PARADIGM.
An adult female in a retirement community such a Buena Vida would be healthy in the 25 – 30
% body fat range while an adult male would be healthy in the 20 – 25 % range. Both of these
ranges are slightly higher than what you would find in typical medical publications but
account for the inevitable weight gain and muscle loss that normally occurs as we age.
However, if we train consistently and vigorously, we can still create muscle mass which would
increase our LBM and the recommended 18 – 25 % range for women and the 12 – 20 % range
for men are still attainable.
In addition, consider that more muscle mass requires more calories to sustain itself or actually
be used, ergo, make more muscle and you can eat more food. Therefore, forget about the
weight, focus on your body composition AND don’t be surprised if you gain weight and get
slimmer.
As always, MUSCLE IS THE KEY ----

entertainment at the White Horse Fashion in Wellington. When they arrived, they
were greeted by a beautifully decorated room enhanced with balloons and fresh roses
centerpieces on each table. Individual gifts were awaiting each member at their place
setting. After mingling and catching up with friends, lunch was served. For starters,
each table was presented with wild mushroom and margarita flatbreads followed by
an entrée choice of steak salad, pan roasted salmon, pasta primavera or grilled chicken
with vegetables.
Before the entertainment was introduced by Gail Bunce, she presented to Alice
Bloom, President of the Women’s Club, a gift of appreciation for all her hard work and
dedication for the past three years.
Eric Kearns, Voice of Legends was then introduced and started the room rock’n &
roll’n. His impersonations were amazing! He sang, Neil Diamond, Chubby Checker,
Billy Joel, Johnny Mathias, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Jimmy Durante, Louis
Armstrong, Rod Stewart, Cher and even Kermit the Frog. He left our members happy,
clapping, standing and begging for more!
Desserts, which consisted of mini pastries and home baked chocolate chip cookies
along with coffee, were served before all 70 women headed for home after a lovely
afternoon.
On behalf of our outgoing
board, we would like to thank
all our members for the sup-
port we have received for the
last three years in making this a
very successful club. As the
club enters a new chapter, we
look forward to the members
providing the new board the
same enthusiastic support.
