CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE Call committee voted in. Members are: Ella Gordon, Bart Green, Carolyne Pietz, Sean Rocke, Steve Wiley, Connie Winsauer. Alternates: Nancy Reglin and Cheryl Johnson.

Ministry Site Profile (MSP) is being written. The draft will be reviewed by the call committee for their input.

The church council will approve the final version.

The MSP will be submitted simultaneously online to both the ELCA and Synod. The Bishop must approve the MSP before it can be posted.

The submitted version will be available in the church office.

2016 Pledges For those of you who are still considering a 2016 financial pledge and for those who have pledged, here are some upcoming anticipated additions to our 2016 budget that will grow our current and future ministries. We have been blessed with wonderful pastors at King of

Glory; we are now in the call process for our next pastor. The call process has expenses that we need to plan for – travel and moving cost, plus a possible increase in pastor pay – depending on experience.

Our current sound system has been experiencing an increasing number of issues. We need to explore upgrading our system to ensure we continue to enable a good worship experience for all our members. In addition we want to explore how we might integrate technology more fully into our worship service.

Adding a new Youth and Family director to our staff in 2016. If we want to grow, we need to have a leader in this position to nurture and develop young Christians that will become future members of KOG.

Retain a productive and strong staff: We are exploring a modest retirement benefit program which will be reviewed and approved by the Council.

If you have questions please contact any one of the Council members.

OPEN SEMINARY To all God’s people at King of Glory: This month I will share with you an abridged version of an assignment I completed earlier this month for a course on the Psalms. Students were asked to write a letter to a parishioner who said that she very much appreciated poetry, even ancient poetry, but that she just could not ‘get into’ the Psalms: You have asked what you need to know or appreciate in order to ‘get into’ the psalms. I will make a first attempt here to answer your question, and I will also consider this just the beginning of a longer conversation. Our experience with poetry began in the nursery with sing-song rhymes; from this we learned the beauty of rhythm. During fifth grade, we earnestly composed haikus, and we learned economy of speech within the bounds of seventeen syllables. We also learned that poetry requires neither rhythm nor rhyme – and indeed the psalms have neither, not in Hebrew and not in most English translations. We progressed through scatological adolescent limericks and the intense beat of rap music – lots of rhyme and rhythm there! – into the unbearably romantic sonnets that reflected the eros of our young adulthood. And then we encountered the Psalms. And we scratched our heads. And we started asking for formulae and algorithms to decode this mysterious writ. So let me try to help you walk two paths simultaneously – the path of the head which searches for structure to the poetry and the path of the heart which yearns for a God whom words are inadequate to describe. The Psalms are not just poetry. They are also Holy Scripture,

written by human hands and inspired by God’s Spirit. As such, they are to be approached with reverence. But reverence does not mean en-crypting them in a subterranean vault and guarding them without engaging them. Indeed, we aspire to de-crypt them, in the dual sense of bringing them out of the ‘crypts’ of history and obscurity, and by wrestling with them to decipher their voice.

The Psalms are not just poetry. Many of them are prayers! (Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote a book called Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible.) When you read a Psalm that begins with words like “Hear my prayer, O LORD” (Psalm 143:1a, NRSV), you know that you are listening in on an intimate address to God. As a next step, consider whether you can add your voice to that of the Psalmist. During Lent, we often pray “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love.” (Psalm 51a, NRSV). When you are in a penitential mood, (or even when you are not), try praying the first 17 verses of Psalm 51.

The psalms are not just poetry. They are songs! You have experienced the difference between the spoken and the sung word - you can imagine how The Star-Spangled Banner might come across if Whitney Houston were to recite it! Martin Luther considered music as a gift from God, and especially music that proclaimed God’s word. “Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music.”

The Psalms, though written in a particular time and culture, reflect the universality of human experience and emotion. When I was in chaplaincy training for seminary, the question often arose, “How do you feel?” I quickly learned (from my

supervisor) that there were only four acceptable answers to the question: sad, mad, glad, or scared. Watch for these emotions (and all their associated adjectives which my supervisor would not allow) in the Psalms!

The Psalms are ancient. The simple fact that they have withstood the test of millennia makes them worthy for us to wrestle with the interpretation of such obscure lines as “But you have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox” (Psa 92:10 NRSV).

The Psalms are honest, even when the truth is ugly. Check out Psalm 88. Do you imagine that early and present-day Christian martyrs might rightly sing this Psalm, which ends, “You have caused friend and neighbor to shun me; my companions are in darkness.” (Ps 88:18 NRSV)?

Jesus prayed the Psalms. Check out Psalm 22:1 and Psalm 31:5.

Shalom, Anne

Longest Night Prayer & Healing Service Monday, December 21 7:00 pm

“Comfort ye my people." The opening words of Handel's Messiah are a familiar sound at this time of year. Yet for many of us anticipating and preparing for holiday celebrations, the need for comfort is somehow overlooked. Others are well aware of that need as

they struggle through the increasing physical darkness that leads to the winter solstice, our longest night. Christmas, and the days leading up to it, can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone, and we need time to unburden ourselves with God, and pray with one another in small groups, or individually, and we need time to just be. Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us. For these reasons, King of Glory Lutheran is offering a special “Longest Night” prayer and healing service on Monday, December 21, at 7:00 pm. We’ll gather for a service of prayer and healing, and have time for individual prayers with prayer ministers. We’ll conclude with a time of fellowship to celebrate the winter solstice. If you would like to participate as a prayer warrior for this service, please contact the church office at 377-0220 or [email protected]. Please share this with all your friends and neighbors. The longest night of darkness can be the start of the best light for the days to come!

FOUND: GOLD COIN IN THE COLUMBARIUM GARDEN!

Do you remember the Children’s Sermon on November 8? Each child received two $1 gold coins with the instructions that they were to “Save, Share, Spend” those coins and report back to Pastor Kristi on what they had done. On the same Sunday, Y.E.S. had a special Memorial Service in the Columbarium

Garden and honored veterans inurned in the Columbarium with notes of thanks lovingly left below the niches. Students talked about the military tradition of “coining” as a means of honoring a job well done. Later in the week as the flags and stars were put away, a $1 gold coin was found under a note. In honor of this gift left by Jackson S., the Columbarium Committee will contribute $101 ($100 + $1) to a Veterans cause in the Boise area, with special suggestions from Vicar Anne. Thank you Jackson! Your gift of honor is indeed a gift of thanks! King of Glory: You may help grow the gift! The Columbarium Committee will accept gifts through December for the Veterans Cause—please indicate on your gift that this is for the Columbarium Committee Veterans’ Cause. Thank you!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I would like to very sincerely thank the many members of KOG who prayed for me during my recent hospitalization. Thanks also Pastor Kristi for visiting me at the hospital. This is truly a loving and caring congregation and I can tell you for sure that your prayers were heard and answered. – Bev Siefkes

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The Social Ministry Committee would like to thank the congregation for the donations made to the Hope House during September and October. This is another excellent example of God’s Sharing Hands.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Thank you to the 18 volunteers who participated in Rake Up Boise last weekend. We raked four yards and filled 100 bags with leaves and consumed two dozen bagels.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I want to thank all of our Bazaar volunteers for all their hard work and everyone for your support of this important fund raiser over the past few years. This year was an immense success, with gross sales of $9,920 and net revenue of $9,064. We surpassed our 2014 bazaar final figure by over $2,000. We couldn't have had such a successful job of raising monies for our many WELCA ministries without your support! GREAT JOB! Pat yourself on the back for all your dedication and hard work!

Dear King of Glory, Thank you for the donation of blankets. We truly appreciate the support. If you would like a tour of our shelter, please let me know. Warmest Regards, T. Flaherty Interfaith Sanctuary

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I would like to thank the people that gave Blood in November. This is a really good service and as I am getting people to sign up to donate, I am amazed at the amount of people that can't donate. So the ones that can donate are really needed and appreciated!! Thanks again for your Donation. Sincerely, Marge Holmquist
