ForewordInattemptingtotranslateandcompileabriefShiaCommentaryinEnglish,sofarnonedone,referencehasbeenmadetotheUrduCommentary,viz.“UmdatulBayan”and“TranslationoftheGloriousQur’anbythelateSyedMaqboolAhmadofDelhi”whohasrestricteditsexpositiontoDivineLights(TheImmaculateAhlal-Bayt),heavenlyborn,inspiredbyDivinity,toexemplifyinperson,DivinePhilosophyoftheText,andwhoshallbearwitnesstohumanacts.EachofhisownageasalsoclaimedbyJesus(videSt.JohnChap.7:7–8,

Chap.8:16).TheirconnectionwithDivineTextwillcontinuetotheDayofReckoning.

TheirexpositionisgenuineandavoidsthoseexponentsofothersectsinIslam,todoawaywithlitigationwhichisnottheobjectaimedathere.

ToshapetheconductandcodeoflifeofReaders,moralsaredrawntoproperlyunderstandtheethicalvaluepropoundedinDivinePhilosophyoftheGloriousQur’an,whichisbothascienceandanart,atthesametime.Infact,criticalstudyofthelivesoftheseDivineLights,rightfulexponentsoftheText,willgiveasoundtraininginsolutionofproblemsofeverydaylife.

FollowingtheLifeofAli,whoisaherooftheText,withthatoftheremainingmembersoftheAhlalBayt,aboutwhoseaffectiontheprophetsooftenreiteratedareinseparablyconnectedtenetsoftheShiasect,andtheircultinIslamisabsolutelybasedontheirguidance.

ThemightyceremonyintheValleyofKhum,consecratedbythePropheton18/12/9thHijra,underDivineCommands,duringhisfinalpilgrimageisheldtoagreatfestivalwiththeShiasect.ThesermonoftheProphetonthatday,beingofgreatimportancewithShiashasbeenbroughtunder“AppendixA”inthisCommentary.

AdvantageofsermonsofShiapreachers,occasionallyvisitingHyderabad-Dnhasbeentakeninfortheelucidation,andontheethicalside,relativereferencehasbeenmadeintheNewDictionaryofThoughtstolearnedDivines.

AsthecompositionandcorrectionofprofsofDivineTextandtranslationhavebeencarriedoutsingly,nopretensionstotheirfreedomfromslipsafilings,nopretensionstotheirfreedomfromslipsandflingins,otherwise,havebeenfiled;

obeyHimandismercifultotheforgiven,i.e.onewhocommitssins,ispenitentandundoesevilandisforgivenunderDivineGrace.

2.HeisSoleJudgeofReckoningDay,faithinwhichwillmakeeveryonefearHim,praytoHimandprayforhelpfromHimtokeeponanapprovedpathofthevirtuousagainsttheoffendersandmisguided(condemnedtoHell)whofalsifiedanddisobeyedHiscommandsandAdoptedotherleadersthanthoseImmaculateappointedbyGod.2

2.Thisisthetext1ofwhichmentionisoneprecededbythemwhereinthereisnodoubtguidanceforthedevotee

3.whobelieveinthehidden,aresteadyatprayersandspendoutofwhat“We”haveendowedonthem.

4.Andwhobelieveinwhatisrevealeduntoyouandwhatwasrevealedbeforeyouandwho(also)arecertainofEternity.

5.Theseareonguidancefromtheircreatorandtheseshallberedeemed.

6.Thosewhohide,i.e.denyjudgmentshallnotembracefaith(nomatter)howmuchsoeveryoufrightenthemornot;itisallonetothem.

7.Godhassealedtheirheartsandearsandtherearecurtainsdrawnbeforetheireyesandforthemisintensepunishment.

1.LettersDivinesecretsarepersonifiedinAhlal-BaytandProphetsaidtheirconnectionwiththetextshallcontinueuntiltheDayofJudgmentwhentheymeethimnearcistern.

Verses8-20

8.Andfromamongsthumansaresomewhosay,“WebelieveinGodandJudgmentDay,”butthey2arenotsosincere.

9.TheydeceiveGodandthosewhoembracedfaithbuttheydonotdeceiveanybutselfandarenotaware.3

10.Intheirheartsisdiseaseofdoubt4andGodintensifiesit,forthemisintensepunishmentinconsequenceoffalsifyingfacts.

11.Whentheyareaskednottostirupdissensiontheysay,“Weareonlypeacemakers.”

12.Beware,verilythesearedissentersbuttheydonotrealize.

13.Whentheyareaskedtobelieveasotherstheysay,“What!Shallwebelieveasstupid?Beware,theyarestupid,buttheydonotknow.

14.Whentheymeetfaithfultheysay,webelieve(inIslam)whentheyhappeninsolitudeupondevils,theysay“wearewithyou.”

15.Godshallderidethem(onJudgmentDay)byleavethemtotheirfateduetotheirdisobedience,whereintheyareblindfolded.

16.Thesearepeoplewhoexchangedmisguidanceforguidance,whichtransactiondidnotprovebeneficialandtheywerenotguidedinadoptingthiscourse;aspurchase5ofmisguidanceleadstolossofreason(i.e.faith)maincapital.

17.Theirexampleresemblesthosewholitupfirewhenitilluminatessurroundings,Godremoves(thisartificial)lightandleavesthemintheir(original)darknesswhentheycannotsee.

18.Theyaredeaf(toTruth),dumb(inmaintainingtruth)andblind(inrealizingsignsoftruth)andtheywillnotretreat(frommisguidance).

19.Ortheirexampleisalike(thosetakenup)inheavydownpourofHeavenly(rainfall)whereinisdarkness,thunder,andlightening,outoffearofdeath,theythrusttheirfingersintotheirears;Godhasgainedroundinfidels.

20.Lighteningisjustatthepointofdazzlingtheireyeswhenitlightensaboutthem,theywalk6therein;whendarknessovertakesthemtheystand7over.IfGodwished,Hecouldhave(otherwise)deprivedthemof(theirpowerof)hearingandsight.Verily,GodisOmnipotent.

Moral

Fullcharacteristicsofhypocritesareindicatedinthisparagraphandeverytrueseekeroftruthshouldtrytoavoidtheapparentwaysadoptedbythem,duetotheirloveforworldlypleasureswhichtheycouldnotsacrificeforeternalhappinessaboutwhichtheydidnotfeelcertainandactedon“Abirdinhand”isworthtwoinbushwithoutrealizing“God’sPromisesaresuretobefulfilled.”

Verses21–29

21.Ohyou(addressedtoallthosemenofmaturedage),prayuntoyourProvidence,Hewhocreatedyouandthosebeforeyou(i.e.Universalcreatorsoleandone),certainly(nowonder)youbecomeGod-fearing,i.e.Chaste.

22.WhomadeEarthforyoumattressandtheskiesroofsandpouredfromabove(clouds)rainwithwhichgrowavarietyoffruits(andvegetation)foryou,hencedonotassociateanywithGod,whereasyou(fully)know.

23.Ifyouhesitateinwhat(text)saysWehaverevealeduntoOurcreature(Mohammad),(better)bringonechapterlikeitifyouareright(insupportthereof).

24.Ifyoudidnotdosoandyoushallneverbeabletodoso(infuture)fearthefire,fueledwhereofarethehumansandrocks(ofsulphur)whicharepreparedforinfidels.

25.And(ohyouProphet)givetidingsuntothosewhoembracedfaithanddischargedactsofvirtue,which,forthem,are“paradises”belowwhichflowstreams.Whenonentrancethereinshallbeservedwithfruitsasfood,shalltheysaythesearetheyhavehadheretofore,(inthisworld)andshallcomeuntothemsimilar(tothoseinappearanceandshapebutintaste)andthereinforthemarepuremates(nymphs)andwhereinshalltheyeverabide.

26.Verily,Goddoesnotrefrainfromexemplifyingamosquitoorameaneronethanthis,andthosewhohaveembracedfaithknowthat(exemplification)fromtheirProvidenceisafact,andthosewhohavedeniedsaywhatdoesGodmeanthereby?Mostareguidedtherebyandmostgoastrayatthisandnonebutthedisobedientareledastray.

27.ThosewhobreachtheirpromiseswithGodandfandiscordamongstthosewithwhomGodhasobligedthemtokeepaccordandfanlitigationonEarth,thesearetheverypeopletosufferineternity.

28.Whydoyoudeny(existence)ofGodwhenHehasgivenyoulifewhen(beforewhich)youwerenothing.Theyyouwilldieandagainyouwillberaised(alive)inHispresencetoaccountfortheirdeeds.

29.ItisHewhocreatedeverythingonEarthandthenattendedtocreatingskyofwhichHeproducedseven.Heisaloneacquaintedwitheverything(Omniscient).

Moral

1.Godpointsouthowfaithcanbedevelopedtoattainperfectionbycontinuoustimelyprayersandwhichissuretoleadtosalvation,remindingofHisObligation,remembranceofwhichwillkeepyoueverobedienttoHim,withoutattachinglikeaffectiontoothers.

2.Toeliminatemisgivingsofmind.He,inproofofHisbeingyourcreator,remindsyouofwhatandwhereyouwerebeforeit.Andoncehebroughtyou,aftergivingyoutimelimitinthisworldtogainyourEternalGrade,hewillagainraiseyoualivetosendyoutorespectivegradeofParadiseorHell.Ifyoupersiststill,thenHechallengesyoutobringalikechapteroftheQur’anfailingwhichyoustandtocondemnationofHell.Hence,donotdoubt,butwithproofsadduced,submittoHisExistence,howsoevertriflingtheproofsappeartoyou.Benotofthosedissenterswhosepurposeismerelytofandissensionunderthedevil’sleadingtoperdition.

Verses30–39

30.OhyouProphet,recallwhentheProvidencesaiduntoangelswhichHeshall(ever8)beappointingHisrepresentativeonEarth.Theysaid,“Even

thoughtheybefanningdissensionandcausingbloodshed,whileweprayuntoYou.”

31.AndAdamwastaughtknowledgeofallthings(inthepresenceofangels)andquestionsonthesamewereputbeforeangelsandHesaid,“Ifyouarejustifiedinyourclaim,namewhattheseare?”

32.AngelsimportunatelyprayeduntoGod,“GrandisYourGlory”andwebearnoknowledgebeyondwhatwearetaught.Verily,“YouareAll-knowing.”

33.ThenhecommandedAdamtopointtothemtheirnames(withtheirproperties).WhenAdamtaughtthemtheknowledgeofthings,Godaddressedthem,“DidnotIremarkIhaveknowledgeofthehiddenonearthandintheheavensandalsoIknowwhatyouexposeand9impose.

34.RecallwhenIcommandedangelstokneeldownbeforeAdam,allkneltdownexcept“Iblis”10(arch-angel)whorefusedandturnedawayandprovedhimselfamongtheinfidels.

35.AndWetoldAdamtoabideinParadisewithhiswifeandeatthereofwhattheychosenotto11approachthattreelesttheymightbecomedisobedient.

36.TheSatan12plannedtoexpelthemand13succeededinremovingthemfromwheretheywereandWecommandedthemtogetdown“WhereyouwillbeinimicaltooneanotherandyouwillhavesojournonEarthwithpropertyforthetimebeing.”

37.ThenAdamreceivedsomeintercessoryprayers,uponutteranceofwhichtheirpenancewasadmittedbyGod.VerilyHeismightatadmissionofpenanceandmightatforgivingsins.

38.Wecommanded“Youwillgetdown(onEarth)andwhenyoushallreceiveguidancefrom‘Me’(alone).”Thosewhoshallfollowitwillhavenofearoffuturenorbesorryforthepast(sins).

39.Thosewhoshallrefuseandfalsify(Myguides)thosearetheverypeopletobecondemnedtoHell,whereintheyshalleverremain.14

Moral

1.Godclearlystates,“AppointmentofHisRepresentativesonEarthisabsolutelyreservedforHim,”whichalluredangelstoputforththeirclaim,andwhichisrefutedbyGodontheirbeingnotcapable,inspiteofbeingimmaculate,(thisprovessuperiorityofDivineMessengers,i.e.Prophetsoverthem).MarginalnotesshouldbestudiedverycarefullytorealizetheentireissueofAdam’slossofParadiseandregainthereof.

2.Thisparagraph(clauseandcouplets)aretheessenceofthetext.Humans,asprogenyofAdam,issubjecttoevilinfluenceoftheDevil(createdasatest)whoisenemyofhumans,asontheiraccount,he(devil)wascursedandsentoutofheavenandbyvirtueofhisprayershegotamendstoswervemisgivings,which,whenpeopleforget“Divinewarnings”ZikrullahoverrulehimbutonrecollectiontheyshouldpleadonintercessoryprayersuntoGodbyundoingsinsandrectifyingselfanddirectingselftoGodbyfollowingDivineGuideswhoareImmaculate,inpreferencetopretenderstoguidance,whoareneitherImmaculate,norbearknowledgeofDivineTextasrevealedtotheProphetandhisreveredimmaculatefamily(peacebeuponthem).(TheyareDivineLights,havingcomefromHeavenwithDivineknowledge.)

Verse40

40.OhyouJews(sonsofJacob)alwaysrememberMybountieswhichIhaveendowed(onyou)fulfilthecovenantcontractedwithMesoImayfulfilMyContractwithyou(ofadmittingyouinParadise)andfearMealone.

Verses41–46:FirstFiveBooksoftheOldTestament

41.AndbelievewhatIhaverevealeduntoMyProphetwhichconfirmswhatisrevealedherebefore.InTorahBible,PsalmsanddonotdenybeingfirstamongstthemanddonotchangeMycommandsforpaltrygiftsandfearMealone.

42.Donotexposefalsityinplaceoffactsanddonothidethefactsintentionally;

43.keeponpayingtitheandsayprayersincongregation.

44.What!Youadviseothersforadoptingvirtuesandforgetthesameforyourself,inspiteofthefactyouarereadingtheText,doyounothavecommonsense(toactaccordingly)?

45.SeekMyhelpwithprayersandfasts,verily,prayersareharduponall,exceptwhofearMe

46.whoarecertaintofaceUs(onReckoningDay)andpresentthemselvesbeforeOurMajesty.

Moral

1.Paradiseispromisedtothose(1)whoalwaysthankGodbyprayingfortheirsins,doingpenancefortheirdrawbacksandthankingHimfortheinnumerablegiftsofbountiesofreason,health,wealthetc.(2)Whofulfilthetrustreposedinthembyregularprayers,fasts,titheandself-sacrifice,doeveryvirtue,refrainselffromsinsandpreventothersandassociatethevirtuousavoidingthevicious.Thisisinfactacceptingsincerely(foundationoffaith).(1)Usulal-din15andfollowing(2)FuruwhichiscommonDivinedictumforallreligionsofGodwhichis“Islam.”

2.Hethenforbidsabstainingfromacceptingbribes,bymisinterpretingreligiousTextsandkeepingDivineawealwaysinviewinalldealings,nottohideDivinefactsforworldlygifts,withoutfear,opposeallcontradictorycustomstoDivinecommands,also,benotadvisingotherswhilefollowingyourpassionforallpersonalinterestsdespitereadingtextandactingadverselytheretowhichisamarkedsignofwantofdevelopedreason.

Verse47–59

47.SeekDivineassistancebyprayersandfasts.OhyouJews,rememberMybountieswhichIhaveendowedandkeepinviewwhichIhavepreferredyoutoothersofmycreation.

48.Feartheday(ofdeath)whennoonewillintercedeonanybody’sbehalf,norwillanyintercessionbeadmitted,norwillanycompensationbeaccepted,

norwillanykindofhelpbeaffordedtothem.

49.RememberwhenWesavedyoufromtheclutchesofthePharaoh’sfollowers,whoweretormentingyouinvariouswaysandweresparingyourdaughtersandwhereintherewasagreattrialfromyourProvidence.

50.AndrememberwhenWepavedawayforyouintheseaandsavedyouanddrownedinyourpresencethefollowersofPharaoh.

51.AndrememberwhenWecontractedapromisefromMosesof40nights,thenyoubecamedisobedientinhisabsencebyworshippingacalf.

52.EventhenWeforgaveyousoyoumaybegratefultoUs.

53.RememberwhenWeendoweduponMosesTextandDistinctivetest(todistinguishtruthfromfalsehood)soyoumayadopttherightpath.

54.RememberwhenMosestoldhissect,“Ohyoufollowers,youhavedisobeyedbyworshippingacalf,dopenanceinthepresenceofyourCreatorandkilloneanother16,thisisjustfairforyouintheeyesofyourcreator,then“He”acceptedpenanceandshoweringgrace.

55.RememberwhenyoutoldMoses,“WeshallneverputfaithinGoduntilweseeHim,”(withourphysicaleyes)yousawlighteningfallingonyou.

56.ThenWeenlivenedyou,afteryourdeath,soyoumaybegrateful.

57.And“We”castcloudsoveryourheadsasashadeandsentyouheavenlyfish(mannaandsalva)and(Wecommanded)toeatpureofourprovision,inspiteofit,theydidnotbecomegrateful.TheydidnoharmtoUs,rathertheywereputtingthemselvestodestruction.

58.AndwhenWecommandedthemtogotothevillageandeatthereofwhattheylikedandenterkneelingdownatthegateandcalling“Hitta”whileentering.WeshallforgivetheirsinsandshallWesoonraisethevirtuous.

59.ButthedisobedientexchangedwhatWedictatedwithwhattheyliked.Therefore,WecastuponthemHeavenlydisasterinproportiontotheirdisobedience.

Moral

1.HeremindsthemofHisBountiestotheirforefathersoastoenablethemtoavoidleadersoftheirforefathersandinselectingthem,towhomHesentProphets,whoalsoruledonEarth,likeSolomonandDavid.

2.ThenHeremindsthemofdeathday,beforewhichtheyshoulddopenanceandvirtues,elsenothingshallsavethem,neithercharitynorintercession.

3.HethenremindsthemofHisobligationstotheforefatherswhowereundertheclutchesofPharaoh’sfollowers.

Verses60–61

60.WhenMosesprayedto“Us”forwaterforhissect“We”commandedtostrikehisrodontherock,uponwhichgushedout12streams.Wheneveryoneknewhischannel,eatanddrinkofDivineprovisionanddonotmoveaboutonEarth,causingdissentions.

61.WhenyoutoldMoses,“Weshallnotbecontentononefood,praytoyourProvidencetoproducefromEarthvegetables,fruits,garlic,dateandonions.Mosessaid,“What,areyouexchangingwhatissuperiorgifttotrifling?Ifso,getdowntothetownandyouwillhaveyourrequisition.”DisgracewascastonthemandpovertyandplaguewithDivinewrathfollowed.ThiswasduetotheirinfidelitytoGod’scoupletsandmurderingHismessengerswithoutanyjustcause.Thustheysinnedandweretransgressors.

1.DiscontentcausesDivinewrathandmurderingGod’sMessengerswithoutrightreasonleadstohellandDivinewrathaswell.

Verses62–71

62.Verily,thosewhoembracedfaith,theJewsandtheChristiansandSabians,whoevershallbelieveinGodandintheDayofJudgmentandactvirtuouslyshallhavetheirrewardbeforetheirProvidencewithouthavingfearinfutureandgrief.

63.Rememberwhen“We”exactedapromisefromyouandraisedMountSinaoveryourheadtoholdfastbyOurCommandsgiventoyou,remindingtherein

tomakeyouvirtuous.

64.Afterwhichyouturnedaway,andhaditnotbeenfor“DivineMercyandGrace”onyou,youwouldhavebeenruined.

65.Verily,youknowthepeoplewhotransgressedordinanceofHolySabbath,whenWeorderedthemtobedisgracefulmonkeys.

66.Andthispunishmentwemadeaguidebetweenthemandfuturegenerationsandanadviceforthevirtuous(sotheymaynotviolaterestrictionsonFriday).

67.RememberwhenMosestoldhissect,“Godhascommandedtosacrificeacowamongtheignorant.

68.UponwhichtheyrequestedMosestopraytoHisProvidencetodescribeuponwhichMosessaidthecowshould

69.beneitheryoungnoroldbutinbetween;carryoutorderseye.

70.Uponwhich,theyrequestedMosestopraytohisProvidencetofurtherspecifyit,asthecowhadcreateddoubtinthemandverily,“Shallwe,Godwilling,beguided.”

71.Hesaid,“Itshouldbeneitherworkingonthefield,norploughingandbe

spotless.”Theysaid,“Thereitisnow!Youhavehitontherightmark.”Theysacrificeditalthoughitwasnotexpectedofthem.

Friday’s(rules)bestrictlyobserved,elsedefaulterswillrenderthemselvestoDivinewrath.

Verses72–82

72.Afterkillingapersonyoudisagreed(astothepersonwhokilledhim)andGodwantedtodisclosewhatyouwantedtohide.

73.ThereuponWecommandedtotakeapieceof(sacrificed)cow’sfleshandtouchittothecorpse.ThusGodenlivensthedeadandindicatestoyoumiraclessoyoumayappreciate(Hisglory).

74.Thenyourheartshardened(blinded)torealizeactualfactsalthoughtheywerestones,ratherharderthanthem,althoughsomeofthem(stones)aresuchfromwhichoozeoutsprings.Someofthemburstoutlettingoutwater,someofthemprecipitateoutofDivineAwe,andGodisnotunawareofyouractions.

75.DoyouwishtheyshouldbelieveinyoutoDivinecommandsandafterrealizing(significancealthoughthereisagroupamongthemwholistensthereto)tamperswiththemintentionally?

76.Andwhentheymeetthefaithfultheysaid,“Wehaveembracedfaith”andwhentheymeetoneanotherinprivacytheysay,”What!DoyoudisclosethosefactswhicharerevealeduntoyoubyGod(regardingtidingsoftheProphet’scoming)sotheymayadvancetheseargumentsbeforeGodagainstyou:doyounothavesuchsense17?”

77.DonottheyknowGodknowswhattheyimposeandexpose.

87.Verily,WerevealeduntoMosesthetextandthereaftersentasuccessionofProphetsandendowedonJesus,sonofMary,miraclesandreinforcedhimwithHolyGhost.What!WhenalltheProphetscamewithwhatyourpassionsdidnotlike,youturnedaway,someofyoufalsifyingandothersbyslayingthem.

88.Andtheysaidtheirheartsweremasked,ratherGodhadcursedandfewofthem(aresusceptible),i.e.whosincerelydopenance.

89.AndwhentheText(Qur’an-i-SharifbytheProphet)wasrevealedtothemfromGod,confirmingtheone,whichtheyhadandregardingwhich(Qur’an-i-SharifandtheProphet)theywerethinkingofsupersedingtheinfidelsbyputtingfaithintoitandtheProphet,andwhenhecametheyrecognized(from

thesignstheyhadintheText)theyrefusedtobelieveinhimonaccountofwhichGodcursedtheinfidels.

90.Baditwas,theexchangedfaithforinfidelity,fortheirownsoul,andthisrebellionwasduetowhatGodhadrevealeduntoHiscreaturesof(Ismail’sdescentandnotofIsaac’sdescent,likeMosesandJesus)HischoiceoutofHisgrace.TheywereenvelopedwithDivinewrathandforinfidelsisdisgracefulpunishment.

93.RememberwhenWeexactedapromisefromyou,raisingMountSinaioveryoutoholdfastbywhatisrevealeduntoyouandlistenthereto.Theysaid,“Weheardanddisobeyed”becausetheloveofthecalf(embellishedingold)hadgottheupperhandintotheirheartsduetotheirinfidelity.Say(ohyouProphet)baditis“ifyourfaithsoordains”ifyouclaimtobefaithful.

94.Say,“Ifeternityisreservedforyoualone,desiredeath,(tosecureitimmediately)ifyouaretrueinyourclaim.”

95.Theyshallneverdesiredeathbecauseoftheirevildeedsofthepast,and

Godknowsthedisobedient

96.Andyouwillfindthemhighlygreedyoflifeofthisworld,andofassociaters,eachoneofthemwouldliketoliveathousandyears,althoughthiswillnotanywaymitigatetheirpunishmentandGodisseeingtheiractions(whomtheyareignoring,whilesinning,forthetimebeing).

Thissortofrebellion,duetojealousy,wasseeninangels,whodesiredtobeGod’sRepresentativesonEarth,andtheArch-angelwhorefusedtobowdowntoAdamwasonthisaccount.Theangelsdidpenancewhentheyrealizedtheyhadnottheability.SofollowersofSatan,inJews,Christians,andMuslimsdislikedtofollowDivineNomineesbyProphet,whoweregenuineDivineLightsandpreferredtoruleonEarthbeingaworthyambition,thoughleadingthemultimatelytoHellbyannihilatingIslam.

104.Ohyoufaithful,donotsayRa‘inabutsayUnzurna,i.e.giveushearing,andforinfidelsthereisintensepunishment.

105.MenofrevealedreligionsandassociatorsdonotlikeanygoodtocometoyoufromyourProvidence,whereasGodspecifiesHisgracetowhichsoeverHelikes.AndHeismasterofmightygrace.

106.WedonotcancelanyofOurcommandmentsormakeyouforgetitunlessWereplaceitwithbetterorofequalvalueormerit.DoyounotknowGodisOmnipotent?

111.Theysaid,“NonebutJewsandChristiansshallenterparadise.”Thesearetheirdesires.Tellthemtobringtheirarguments(indefenceoftheirstatement)iftheyaretrue.

112.Rather,thosewhopreparetheselftoserveGodforthesakeofGodandisfaithfulhastheirrewardsbeforetheirProvidencewithoutfearofthefutureorgriefofthepast.

1.AddressingequivocallyProphetsofGodisseriouslyobjected,assincerityisneededindealingwiththetrue,beingDivineLights.

113.AndtheJewssaidthe“Christiansarenowhere”andtheChristiansretortedsimilarlytheJews,thoughbotharereadingtheText.Similarlysaidthosewithoutknowledge(e.g.ShiaSunnis)andGodshalldecidetheirdifferenceonreckoningday.

114.Whocanbegreatertyrantthanonewhopreventspeoplefromentering23themosquewhereGodisbeingrememberedandattemptatdestroyingit?Thesearepersonswhoshouldenteritwithdreadinthem,forthemisdisgraceinthisworldandintensepunishmentineternity.

121.ThosewhomWerevealedtheText,readitasithastoberead(i.e.reflectitscommandsandrefrainfromforbidden)thosearethepersonswhohavefaithinit,andotherswhodenyitreadingsimilarlyaretosuffer(ineternity).

122.OhyouJews,rememberMybountieswhichIhaveendoweduponyouandIexaltedyouovertheworld.

123.Feartheday(partingday)whennonewillcompensatenoranysubstituteacceptednoranyintercessionadmittednoranyassistancebeofavail.

124.WhenWetriedAbrahamwithcertainquestionswhichhesolvedsuccessfully.Wesaid,“IamgoingtomakeyouRepresentativeonEarth.”Heprayed,“Willtherebeanysuccessorfrommyfamily.”Godsaid,“The24disobedientshallnotgetanaccessthereto.”

144.Verily,HesawturningyourfacetotheHeavensandsurelyshallHeturnyoutotheQiblayoudesire.SoyouturnyourfacetowardstheHolyMosque,andwherevershallyoube,shallyoudirecttowardsthemosque(whileprayinginobligatoryprayers)andthosewhoaregivenDivineknowledge,knowtheyarerightly(dulyappointedbyhisProvidence)andGodisnotindifferenttoyouraction.

145.Andifyoubringto(thoseJewsandChristians)peopleofrevealedreligions,all(possible)miracles(orarguments)theywillnotadoptyourQiblaandsomeofthem,(i.e.ChristiansofPalestineeast)andshouldyoufollowtheirpassionafterfactshavebeenrevealedtoyou,youshallbeamongthedisobedient.

146.Thosewhohaverevealedreligionsrecognizeyouastheydotheirchildren,butagroupamongthemhidefactsandinspiteofknowledge.

147.Truth(ProphetMohammad)hascomealreadyfromyourProvidence,benot(ohyouMuslims)amongthesuspects.

2.HethenenforcesattachmenttoselfandtheImmaculates,throughwhimHisExistencewasrealizedbyhumans,elsetheywouldnoteverhavesucceededin

locatingHisattributesanddesigns.Itisclearthescientists,havingfailedtolocateandthusbegantodenyHisveryExistence,whereasothers,feelingjealousofmiracles,grantedtoimmaculatesstartedderidingHisProphetsandabrogatinglikepowerstoselftowinpublicadministrationatcostoftheirrights.SoGodstates,whenontheDayofJudgmentwilltheyseeforthemselves,thesecounterfeitleaderscarrynoweightwithGod,willfeelsorryandliketocomebacktokickthemup,whenitwillbetoolate.Infact,Godhasmadecompulsorytheirloveasacompensationforhavingguidedthem.

176.ThisisduetothefactGodhasrevealedthetextwithtruthandthosewhohavedifferedfromitarefarawayfromreceivingbeneficialrewardstherefrom.

Moral

1.Godhascommandedalltoeatlawfulandpureofnaturalproducts,verilywithoutDivineknowledgeofthese,oncannotontheirowninitiativedecidewhatislegalandwhatisotherwise.

2.Thisargumenttosay,weshallfollowourpredecessors’texts,isprejudiceofoldandisbeingfollowedevennowbythoseconsideredauthoritiesonreligionandpoliticswithoutsubjectingtoreasonordeclarationthereofasmisguidance.

3.HehasforewarnedthosewhoacceptbribesandmisinterpretortamperwiththetextandwillleadtoeternalHellwithoutexpiationofsin.

Pilgrimageconsistsof“UmrahandHajj,”whenapilgrimafterputtingpilgrimgarmentsatmikatisforbiddenfromcertainlawfulfunctions,enterstheHolySanctuaryforperambulationandprayersandwalkingupanddownbetweenSafaandMarwa.Hethenremovespilgrimgarment.ontheseventhDhilHajjgoestoArafat,spendingtheninthuntilevening,leavesforMashar,spendingthenightthereandarrivesMinaonthetenthmorning,sacrificesagoatandthrowspebblesforthreesuccessivetimesatJumrah,goestoKa‘baduringintervalsrepeatingperambulationwithprayer,walkingupanddown,comestoMinawhen12thand13thpilgrimageceremonyisfinished.Afterperambulationoflegalizingintercourseandpartingperambulationwithprayer,hegoeseithertoMedina,ifhehasnotgonebeforeorpilgrimagetovisitDivineLightsandreturnshome,invitesrelationatentertainmentinduerecognitionofDivineGift.

Inpre-Islamictimes,therewasnocheckonirresponsiblepowersofthehusbandwhodissolveditathischoice.Islamprotectedwivesfrombeingthrowntotheworldbyimposingconditionsforexerciseofthispowerandevengavethemoptiontodissolvethecontract,undercertaincircumstances.

1.Whendissolutionproceedsfromhusbands,itiscalled“Talak.”

2.Whenitproceedsattheinstanceofwife,itiscalled“Khula.”

3.Whenitismutuallyaffected,itiscalled“Mubarat.”

Shias,unlikeSunnis,onlyrecognizetalak-i-SunnatwhichisinaccordancewiththeruleslaiddownbytheProphet,againsthereticaldivorce,introducedinthesecondcenturyoftheMuslimeraduringUmeyaMonarchywhofounditdifficulttorepudiateit,owingtochecksimposedthereinbytheProphetwithindulgenceoftheircapricesfoundonpliabilityofjurists,aloopholetoeffecttheirpurpose.

Therearetwotalaks,definiteofwhichisknownastalakul-bain,wherepartiessoseparatedunderthis,theycannotremarryuntilthewifemarriesanotherhusband,whoshoulddivorceherbeforeshetakesupherfirsthusbandinremarriage.Whereasintheothercaseofwhichthereareonlytwochancesgrantedtoahusbandtoremarryher,afterhavingdivorcedher.Thishecanrepeatintheseconddivorce.ButthethirddivorceistheresultofTalak-ul-Bainmentionedinthecaseabove.

ThusGodhasdescribedallthesebrieflyintheabovethreecouplets,admirably,threateningthepartiesnottreatlightlyHiscommandamatterofhideandseekdisregardingblessingsofferedtoeitherpartybyIslamtoenjoythesameontheDivinelimits.TheProphetsaid,“Bestofmyfollowersarethosehusbandswholeadapeacefullifewiththeirwivesandbestamongladyfollowersarethosewholeadcheerfullifewiththeirhusbands.WhenGodgivesthemtherewardof1000martyrs,givingsupercessiontothemovernymphseverwisemanandwomanwillkeepaboveadviceinviewasdivorceisdeprecatedbytheProphet,asthemostundesirableescape.

Verses232–235

232.Whenyouhavedecicedtodivorceyourwivesandtheyhaveattainedtheprobationaryperiod(iddah–threeperidsofmenses)donotvexthemiftheyhavedecidedtomarryanotherwhenyourdecisionofdivorceisvirtuouslybased.Thisisforyouradvice,ifyoubelieveinGodandJudgmentDay.ItistoyourcreditandpurificationofyoursoulsandGodknowsandyoudonotknow.

233.Andthosemotherswhodesiretofeedchildrenshouldknowitscompleteperiodoffeedingistwoyears.Anditisforthefatherstoprovidefoodandclothingonfairlines.Thereisnostrainbeyondindividualcapacities,neithermotherhastosufferonaccountofthechildnorthefather,northeguardianofthechild,andifthey(parents)decidetoengageawetnurse,thereisnoobjectiontoitwhenyouagreetopaythemafairwage,fearGodandknowHewatchesyouracts.

234.Thosewholeavewidows,thelattershouldobservefourmonthsandtendaysunderchastity(asaprobationaryperiod)andafterexpiryofthisperiodtheyareatoptiontobeengagedvirtuouslyelsewhereandGodknowswhatyouaredoing.

235.Thereisnoobjectionifyouapplyorkeepinview(i.e.tomarrythewidow,Godknowsandshallremindyou)butdonotexactpromise(inprivacy)excepttalkingonbroadlines,anddonotresolveonmarryingheruntilexpiryoftheperiod,knowverilyGodknowswhatisinyourheartsofearHimandknowverilyGodisforgivingandforbearing.

Moral

1.Theseagainrelatestomaintenanceofhealthysociety.Whatiswantedis“FearofGod”toforceandcontroltheinnerfoe,whichmakesahusbandatyrantandcausesthewifetodisobeyhim,resultinginthemostundesirableactionof“Divorce”which,ifdone,ingoodspirits,andnoattemptatharassingthewifetoselectanothermatetobemade,asitcontributestohislosingparadiseanddestructionforthewomanunderdivorceandcontemplationofseekingabettersuitorisnotobjectionable.

2.Thisagainpertainstomaintenanceofnewlybornbabieswhoaretobebroughtupintheenvironmentsaffordingcomforttotheextentwhichispossibleandnotatthecostofparents.

236.Thereisnoobjectiontocompensateyourwife,onherdivorce,evenwithoutintercourse.Degreeofpaymentdependsuponone’scapacity,doesitvirtuouslyandthisisamoralobligationontheobliging.

237.Andifyouhavedivorcedbeforeintercourse,andfixeddowry,payhalfofitunlessshegivesituporwhohadthepowertoeffectthecontract,andifyoupaywholeofit,itisnearertopiety.Donotforgetmutualobligations(fortheobliging)andverilyGodwatchesyouracts.

238.Guardyourprayers,especiallytheafternoonandpraywhilestandingbyQunoot.

239.Duringimpendingdanger,praywhilewalkingorridingandwhenyouareoutofdanger,prayasinstructedwhenyoudidnotknow.

2.Advancingaloan,inthenameofGod,withoutstipulatingoftime,ofitsreturn,carriesreward18timesoftheoriginalpremium.

3.Inthisispointedout,DivinePrerogativeofselectingDivineLightsdependsnotonworldlywealth,butonMartialSpiritandDivineknowledge,bothbeing“DivineGifts.”Asingularcase,duringtheProphet’sregimewastobefoundinAliinwhosefavour,herepeated.HissinglestrokeofBattleofKhandakwassuperiortoprayersofMenandSpiritsuntiltheDayofJudgmentandAliisthegateoftheCityofKnowledge.

Hereadistinctproof,ofProphet’sfollowers,afterhavingembracedfaithandenjoyedfruitsofhissocietyathomeandfield,couldnotsavethemselvesfrominbornhatredtheyboretoespeciallyAliwithwhomtheycouldnotcompeteonanyaccountonthebattlefield.HisconstantprivacywiththeProphetraisedjealousyinthemwhich,despiteconstantstatementoftheProphetwhichhewasdoingeverythingunderDivineDictateswouldnotsatisfy.Inotherwords,theywerenotsincereadherentsoftheProphets.Theyhadinterestoftheworld,Power,andpropertyinview,togainwhichtheycontinuouslykepthiscompanyandtogaininfluencewiththepublic,whichmightstandbythemlater,aftertheProphet’sdemise.Nopersoncouldrestcontentwiththeirprayersfastand

pilgrimageuntilhecontinuouslygoesontastingpurityoftheirheartandsincerityofdevotiontoGod.

Verses254–257

254.Ohyoufaithful,spendinthenameofGodofwhatWehavegivenyoubeforedeathdaywhenalltransactionswillceaseaswithfriendshipandintercession.Infidelsareonlydisobedient.

255.GodisHebesideswhomthereisnootherGod,self-existentandself-preservingneithersleepsnorrestobertakeHim.WhateverisintheheavensoronearthbelongstoHim.WhocandaretointercedetoHimwithoutHispermissionandHeknowsthepresentandthefuture.NonecangetanapproachtoHisknowledgeexceptunderHisconsent.ExpansiveisHisknowledgerelativetotheheavensandEarth.NotcanguardthemandHeisalmightyandomnipotent.

257.AndGodisasympathizerofthefaithful,extricatesthemfromdarkgloomofsuspiciontolightofcertainty.Andtheinfidelsareslavestopassion,drivesthemoutfromlightofcertainty(darkness)gloomofmentalmisgivings.TheyareofHellwhereintheyshalleverremain.

1.Godhaspointedouteverygoodthing,e.g.faithandactsproceedingtherefrom,e.g.prayers,fasts,paymentoftithe,pilgrimage,etc.shouldbeexecutedinalifetimeorwilled,incaseofarrears,sonothingwillcometotheiraidwhendeathangelproceedstohimtoremovetheirsouls.

2.Thiscouplethasgotmightyeffectsonthosewhokeeponcontinuouslyrepeatingwithcertaintyoffaithandnocoupletsinthetextcanreplaceit.Itsmeaningisself-explanatory.Everyoneshouldcommitittomemory.Itgives,inbrief,inwhichMuslims,whohadlightofIslam,afterhavingadmittedleadershipofnon-authorizedKhilafat,lostallrightstoparadiseandshalleverbeinhell,whereasthosewhoadmittedtrueKhilafatshallbevirtueoftruefaith,beultimatelyunderintercessiontogetparadise.

261.ParableofthosewhospendtheirpropertyinthenameofGodisalikesowingtheseedwhichgrowssevenears,ineachearofwhichareahundredgrainsandGodenhancesforwhomsoeverHelikes.HeisOmniscientandEnhancing.

1.Inthisparableincrease700timesisduetosincereintentionswithwhichaperson,withtheirlawfulearningspendsinnameofGodasperstatues.

2.CharitybasedonsinceritywithoutobligationandaninsultisappreciabletoGod,therewarder,elseanapologyduringdisabilitywillactequallywell.

3.Itwillhaveitseffect.Saveselfagainstprideandungratefulnesstoloseprosperity.

267.Ohyoufaithful,spendinnameofGodpureofwhatyouearnandwhatisproducedfromearthforyou,anddonotthinkofimpuretospend,althoughyouarenotsupposedtotakeit,althoughyouoverlookitandknowverilyGodisself-sufficientandworthofpraise.Thedevilthreatensyouwithpoverty.

273.Itisforthepoor,imprisonedduringcrusade,havingnomeanstogetoutandignorant,thinkstheyarerichduetotheirpiety(inmaintainingself-respect)butyoucandiagnosethemfromtheirfaces,theydonotsupplicatepeople.WhateveryouspendincharityGodisacquaintedtherewith.

Moral

1.Furthermethodoflivingpureandpiouslifeisdictatedbasedon“Piety.”ItistoearnanhonestpennyandoutofitssavingstodocharitywhichshallberepayableinEternitywithoutanyreduction,providedtherightfulpersonsarerecipientsthereofalthoughthey,outofself-respect,willnotsupplicateyou.

2.Heprefers“Wisdom”torichesforpeople,becauseitisthroughit,aperson’sactsarepurifiedandonlytheseareappreciatedbyHimasHeHimselfispure.

3.Thisisanotherimportantfacttorememberandthisisnottoforceanybodytofallinwithyourviews.ThisissecretandreservedtoGod,yourdutyistoadviseonRightPathwithoutseeingitsissue,purelytoseekDivinewill.

Verses274–281

274.ThosewhospendtheirpropertyinnameofGod,nightandday,secretlyandopenly,hastheirrewardsbeforetheirProvidence.Theyshallnothave

fearorgrief.

275.Thosewhotakeinterestshallnotbeabletostand(onDayofJudgment)butasthough,underinfluenceofthedevil,theyhavebeenstupefied.Thisisbecausetheymadenodifferencebetweenatransactionofsaleandpurchaseandinteresttaking,whereas,formerhasbeenlegalizedbyGod,thelatterisillegalizedforhim,whomadvicefromhisGodcame,andhekeptawayfromit(i.e.vice)whatwascommittedbyhiminthepast(beforereceiptofadvice)hisaffairsarebeforeGod,andthosewhorepeats(wantonly)thecrime,shallbecondemnedtohellwhereintheyshalleverremain.

276.(Charityon)interest(rewardof)shallbewipedoffand(pure64legallyearned)charitywillbeincreasedandGoddoesnotappreciatesinfulheathens.

277.Ofcourse,thosewhoembracedfaith65actedvirtuouslyweresteadyatprayersandpaidtithehavetheirrewardsbeforetheirProvidence.Theyshallhaveneitherfearnorgrief.

278.Ohyoufaithful,fearGod,giveupbalanceofinterest,ifyouarefaithful.

279.Ifyouarenotpreparedtodoit,bepreparedtofaceGodandHisProphet,whereasifyoudopenance,youareentitledtothecapital.Donotbetyrannical(indemandinginterest)anddonotbytyrannizedingettingbackyouroriginalamount.

280.Andifthedebtisstraightened(bycircumstances)relaxuntilyourconvenienceandifyouforfeitthecapital,itismuchbetterifyouknowtheadvantagethereof.

281.FearthedayyoushallrevertuntoGodwheneverysoulshallreceiverewardofhisdeedswithoutmitigation.

Moral

1.Continuouscharity,secretandopenislikeavirtuousactbecauseopencharitycountsforanobligatoryfunctionandsecretcharityisacompensationtowardsshortcomingsofthepastandpresent,andthusresultsinnosorrowofthepastandifthehabitiscontinued,untiltheendofthelife,therewillbenofearforfuture.

2.InterestfromMuslimisnotpermissible.Where,however,moneyremainsathome,withoutcausinganyimpedimentanditisnotaninteresttakinge.g.fatherlendinghisson,orwifetoherhusband,atsuitabledividend.

282.Ohyoufaithful,whenyoutransact,onadvancingaloan,forastipulatedperiod,putitinblackandwhite.ItisnecessaryfortheclerktorecordonjusticeandheshouldnotrefusetowriteasperDivinedictatesandthedebtorshouldhimselfwritefearingGodhisProvidence,withoutleavinganythingtherein.Andifthedebtorbeanidiotorweakorunabletowritehispartnershoulddoitwithjustice,andtwomalewitnessesshouldtestifyitandifitisnotpossibletoprocuretwoofthemthereshouldbeamanandtwowomenwhoshouldvolunteertobewitnessessoifoneforgetstheothershouldremindher,andthewitnessesshouldnotrefusethecallandtheyshouldnotfailinrecordingevenasmallitemfortheperiod.ThisisfairintheeyeofGodandastraightevidenceclosetothefactwherebyyouwillnotentertaindoubtexceptitbeacashmutualtransaction.Whenitisnotnecessarytoputitinblackand

white,andtestifythistransactionwherebeneithertheclerkbeputtolossorthewitnessesandifyoudosoitisfailureofduty.FearGodsoHemayinstructyouasGodisOmniscient.

283.Andifyouareontourandcannotgetaclerk,pledgeorpawn(asyoursecurity)withthetrustworthywhoshouldfulfilthesecurityandFearGodhisProvidence,anddonothidetheevidenceandhewhodoesitintentionallyisasinnerandGodknowshowyouact.

ThisisthecaseonwhichLawofcontractisconstitutedinIslamanditcarriesallnecessaryprecautionstobeincluded,whenapartyoffaithfulisdealingintransaction.

284.ForGodis,“Whatisinheavensandonearth,”ifexposedwhatisinyourheartsorhideitverily,Godshall(demand)account(thereof)forgivinghimwhomHechoosesandchastisingwhomHelikesandGodisOmnipotent.

285.TheProphetbelievedinhisrevelationfromGodandthefaithful,allbelievedinGodandHisangels,HisrevelationandHismessengers.Wedonotmakedifferencebetweenanyandtheysaid,“Weheardandfollowed,weseekThyforgivenessandtoYouweshallrevert.”

Godhaswarnednottoelucidatetheambiguouscoupletsofthetextinthedivergentway,youthink,grammaticallyanddogmatically,givingwideapplicationofmeaningsfromtheoriginalanddilatingonone’sthoughts,soastodeviatefromauthorizedversionsofDivineLights,whoseconnectionwithDivinetextshallcontinueuntiltheDayofJudgmentandwhoseaffectionisatenetofIslamandasloveimpliesobedience,naturallyitresultsinavoidingtheirenemiesandfriendsoftheirenemies.

Thishasresultedintwomainfactions,onehavingitsreligiousleadershipinDivineLightandtheotherotherwise,todefendtheiractsingainingworldlyendsandsupportingtheiractsbymisinterpretationofthetext.Forpeacefullife,socialjusticewithheathensisnotforbidden,evenmutualobligationisrecommended,especiallywhentheydonotinterferewithyourreligiousrightsandprejudicesandsecretlydonotcontrivetoconvertyouordriveyououtofthecountry.

10.Verily,thoseinfidelswillnotavertDivinepunishmentbymeansoftheirchildrenandproperty;rather,theyareessenceofhell.

11.LikethefollowersofPharaohandthoseprecedinghimwhofalsifiedOurcommands(DivineLightswhenpersonified)uponwhichGodarrestedthemoitheirsinsandGodisMightyatpunishment.

12.Tellinfidels,theywillbeshortlyvanquishedandassembledinHellwhichisanabominableabode.

13.Verily,youhadaninstanceinthecaseoftwofacingpartiesoneofwhichwasfightinginthenameofGodandtheotherinfidels,towhomappearedfaithfulinduplicateandGodhelpswhomHelikes;verilyinthisisasignforthesensible.

14.Appreciationhasbeencreatedformanintheirloveforwomen,childrenandheapsofgoldandsilverbanglesandnecklace,pointedhorses,animalsandfields.2Thisisworldlygainandisfrail,andbeforeGodisLastingreward.

15.Say,“ShallIpointyououtamoreambitiousthingthanthis?”Forthepious,whofearGod,beforetheirProvidenceareeternal3gardens,flowingbeneathwhicharenymphsandDivinewillandGodisviewingHiscreatures.

16.WhoprayuntoGodsaying,“Wehaveembracedfaith,forgiveoursinsandsaveusfrompunishmentofhell.”

17.Theyarepatient,true,obedient,charitableandprayingpenancebeforedawn.4

19.Verily,thereligionbeforeGodisIslam(resignationuntoHim)whereindidnotdifferthosewhomthebookwasrevealedexceptafterbecomingcognizantwithit.OutofjealousyinbetweenthosewhoshalldenyGod’scommandslethimbepreparedforimmediatepunishmentfromGod.

20.Andiftheydisputeyourclaim,say,“IsupplicateGodalongwithmyfollowerstofollowsuitwithyou.Iftheydid,theygetguidance,elseyourdutyisnothingbutcommunicationofmessageandGodiswatchingHiscreatures.

51.WorshipHimaloneandthisisthedirectwaytoHisproximity.”

52.WhenJesusrealizedinfidelityinthemheasked,“WhoisgoingtohelpmeforGod’ssake.”Thefishermen,inreplysaid,“WeareyourassistantsforGod,havingembracedfaithinHimsupplicatingyouinduetestimonythereof.”

ThisisasaresultoftheProphet’smessagetodistantplaces,afterhavinginfluencedthenearaboutpaganArabs,toNajran,AtowninYemen,whereChristianswerebelievinginJesustobeasonofGod.MenunderleadershipofAskafcameovertoarguewiththeProphetwhomGodrevealedtoofferalikecaseinAdam,whohadnoparents.

Onrefusaltobeconvinced,GodcommandedtheProphettothrowdownthegauntletbyimprecatingcurseonliarsafterbringingintheirsons,ladiesandsoulsonthefieldofimprecationbarringAbulHaris,whorecollectedatraditionofJesusnottoenterintosuchachallenge,ifthepartyinvolvedbroughthisnearestkithandkinbutsubmit,orreconcileonpaymentofJazya,whichbeingdone,theyreturnedhome,thusprovedtruthofIslam,andpurityandperfecttruthofAhlal-Bayt.ItwasforthisAliclaimedtobe“Siddick-i-Akbar”andsaid

nonebutagreatliarwouldadoptthistitle.

64.Say,“Ohyoumenofrevealedreligions,cometoacommonunderstandingbetweenusinwhichweshouldnotassociateanygodnoradoptanybodybarringGod,ourProvidence.”Incase,theyturnaway,say,“BearwitnessIsupplicateGod.”

65.Ohyoupeopleofrevealedreligions,whydoyoulitigateaboutAbraham,becauseboththeTauratandtheBiblewererevealedafterAbraham.Doyounotunderstandsomuch?

66.Ohyoupeoplewhowerelitigatingononeofwhichyouhadknowledge,whydoyoulitigateonwhatyouhavenoknowledge?Godknowsandyoudonotknow.

74.SpecializeswithHisgracewhosoeverHechoosesandhiismightilygracious.

75.Ofmenofrevealedreligion,therearesomewhowillrefundyourdepositevenbeitinheapsandotherwillnotevenifhehadtoreturnafarthing,untilyoustandonhishead.ThisiswhytheysaidwehavenoresponsibilityfortheignorantandtheyknowinglylibelGod.

91.Ofcourse,thosewhobecameinfidelsanddiedasinfidels,nothingshallbeacceptedofthem,eveniftheyofferedEarthfullofgold.Theyarethepeopleforwhoisintensepunishmentandforwhomthereisnointercession.

Moral

GodhasbeenuniqueallalonguntilHedesiredcreation.Hecreateda“word”turninginto“Light”fromwhichMd.andthenAliandhisfamilyincludingFatimawerecreatedwithother“word”wascreated“Soul”whichtookanabodeinthislightandthusMohammadandhisfamilyarelightsofGod,givingthemroomintheirenlightenedbodyas“DivineGuides.’Thosewhowalkedintheirlightwereguided.Andthosewholeftthemwereindarknessofmisguidance.TheircreationwasfarpriortocreationoftheHeavensandEarth.ThenHeexactedapromiseoftheseProphets,whoareraysofDivineLightfromthemoftheirLordshipoverthemandassistance.

Thisclausereferstothisevent.ThisiswhatJesusclaimed,“Iamcomealightintotheworld,whosoeverbelievesinmeshouldnotabideindarkness”(St.John13:48).Againhesays,“Ifyouloveme,keepingmycommandments”(St.John14:15)andpredictsourProphet’scoming.“AndIshallpraytoFather(God)andheshallgiveyouforever”(St.John14:16).Howmanyfalseprophetshavesinceappeared,althoughProphetMohammadspokeofAliasaLightafterhimandwillbesucceededbyremaining11.

92.YoushallneverattainrighteousnessuntilyousacrificethedearesttoyouinthenameofGodandwhateveryouspend,verily,Godisacquaintedtherewith.

93.AllfoodwaslawfulforBaniIsraelexceptwhat(camel’sflesh)Jacobhadmadeillegalforself(onaccountofillnessbeforerevelationoftheTorah.Bringitandreadouttomeifyouaretrue.

97.ForthereinareopensignswhereAbrahamstood(toraisethestructure)andthosewhoentersthesanctuaryispromisedsafetyandforGod’ssake,i.e.DivineWill,dopilgrimagewhenyouareabletogothereandthosewhorefusebecomesaninfidelandverilyGodisindependentofcreation.

98.Say,“Youpeopleofrevealedreligion,whydoyoudenyGod’scommandswhenHeisawitnesstoyourdeeds.”

99.Say,“Youpeopleofrevealedreligion,whydoyoubarfromHispaththosewhohaveembracedfaithseekingacrookedwayknowinglyandGodisnotindifferenttoyourdeeds.

100.Ohyoufaithful,ifyoufollowagroupofrevealedreligion,theywillturnyouapostate,afterhavingembracedfaith.

101.AndhowcanyoubecomeanapostatewhenDivinecommandmentsarereadouttoyouandaDivine20representativeisamongstyouandthosewhoadherestoGod,(i.e.toHisrepresentative)verilyattainsguidanceleadingtothestraightwaytoHim.

Moral

ThisisthestandofShiaswhoclaimallprophetsandimamsareDivineLights–havingbroughtDivinemessage,receivingtrainingforthemdirectly,underDivineDictates;hence,thereisnodifferenceintheirelucidationofIslamwhichcannotbeinterpretedinanyotherway.

102.Ohyoufaithful,fearGodtotheextentinwhichfearisneededanddonotdiebutasupplicanttoHim.

103.AndattachyourselftoHis21(i.e.DivineLight)withoutfaction,andthinkofHisbountiesonyouwhenyouwereinimical,heeffectedreconciliationbetweenyou(throughtheProphet)andyoubecamebrotherlyduetoHisbountyandyouwereattheborderofgoingtohellwhenHesavedyoufromthere,andthusGoddescribesHiscommandments(allegorically)soyougetguidance.

TheProphetsaid,“OntheDayofJudgment,hisfollowerswillapproachhimnearthecisterninfivegroupsofwhichfourarehungryandthirsty,willbehurledintohellandthosewhocreatedschisminreligion.Thistookplace,immediatelyaftertheProphet’sdeparturefromthisworldsignshavingdeveloped,duringhisfatalillnessduetoprolongedjealousyoftheProphet’scompanionswhichtheyboretoAli.ThefifthoneheadedbyAlishallenterParadise.

TheProphetsaid,“Moses’followersdividedthemselvesinto71groups,oneofwhomwouldattainsalvation,and72groupsoffollowersofJesus,oneofwhomwouldattainsalvationand73ofmyfollowers,oneofwhomistoattainsalvation,and72willbeofhell.TheoneattainingsalvationshallbefollowingthetextandwillbefollowingmysuccessorAil,forTruthhasremainedwithAliandAliwaswithit,andtheProphetandhiscompanions(meanschosencompanions)everremainedwiththeTruth.

MostoftheProphet’scompanionsaftertheProphet’sdeathturnedoutdisobedientandapostatesactingagainstDivinedictatesandtheProphet’straditions(seetheBattleofCamelandBattleofSiffin.

110.And(ohDivineLights)youarethebestbeingsofthoseorderingvirtues

andbarringvicesbelievinginGod,andifthemenofrevealedreligionshadputfaithinyou,itwouldhavebeenbettertotheircredit,butsomebelievedandothersbecamedisobedient,theywillnotaffectyoubutalittle.e23

111.Andiftheyfightwithyoutheywillrunawayandwillnotbeassisted.24Disgraceissetonthem

destroyingfieldsacrosswhichitpassesandbelongstothosedisobedientwhohavebeendestroyedbytheiractsandGodhasnotdonewrongtothembuttheyhavedonetothemselves.

118.Ohyoufaithful,donothold,exceptyourown,anyinconfidence.Theywillnothesitatetobringaboutyourdestruction,andwillbepleasedwithwhatpainreachesyou.Theirenmityhasbeennoticedintheirspeechandwhattheyholdsecretintheirheartsisworseandwehavenexposedthesefactsclearlyifyouhavecommonsense.

119.Thesearethepeoplewhomyouareattachedtoandtheyhavenofeelingforyou;theypretendtobelieveinthewholetextandwhentheymeetyoutheysaytheybelieveinyourtextandduringprivacy,theybitetheirfingersoutofanger.Say,“DieinyourangerandGodknowswhatisinyourheart.”

120.Ifanyprofitreachesyoutheyareannoyed,andifadversitybefallsyou,theyarepleasedandifyoubepatientandvirtuous,theirintriguewillnotharmyouatall.VerilyGodhasgotroundthemintheiraction.

121.CalltomindwhenyouweremarshallingyourforcesoffaithfulforcrusadeinthemorningandGodisHearingandKnowing.

122.AndbothgroupshadlostheartalthoughGodwasontheirside,andthefaithfulshoulddependuponGod.

144.AndMohammad(peacebeonhim)isnothingbutaprophet;manyprophetsbeforehimhavepassed.Whatifhediesorisslain,areyougoingtoturnbackonyourheels?Ifhedoesso,hewillnotharmGodanyway,andGodshallrewardthegrateful(whoaresteadyintheProphet’scommands).

145.AnditisnotpossibleforanysoultodepartwithoutDivinewill,whichisfixedandthosewhodesireworldlyrewardshallWegiveittothemofit.Andthosewhodesireeternalbounty,shallWeendowonthemofitit.AndWearetorewardthegrateful.

146.AndhowmanyprophetsfoughtacrusadeandwiththemwereamultitudeofvirtuouspeopleandduringadversityinthenameofGodtheydidneither

153.Recallwhenyouwererunningupthehillwithoutlookingbehindatanybody,theProphetwascallingyoutohim,then31followedcalamitiesaftercalamitiessoyoumaynotbe32sorryforwhatislostuntoyuandwhathasfallenuntoyouandgodisacquaintedwithyourdeeds.

154.Thenaftergrief,Hegave33yousafetyinsleepwhichovertookeachoneofyou(faithful)andagroupamongstthemwasoverpowered(hypocrites)withfearoflossoflifeandwasentertaining–misgivingsofaninfidelsaying,“Whatcouldwedointhisaffair.”YousaythisisunderDivinecontrolandtheyaresecretingintheirheartsanddonotwanttoexposetoyousaying,“Hadwecontroloverthebattlefieldwewouldnothavebeenkilled(ourcompanions).”Tellthemifyouhadlockedyourselfinthehouse,thosewhowerefatedtobeslain,wouldhavebeenonthebattlefieldandbecauseGodknowswhatisinyourheart.hewantedtotryyouandtestwhatissecretinyou,andknowGodisfullyacquaintedwiththoseamongstyouwhentwopartiesfacedeachother,itwasnothingbutundertheinfluenceofthedevil,whohadreducedthemthisstate,onaccountofthestateofyourmind.

155.Thosewhohadfledtheirdeeds(ofloveofbooty)andGodoverlookedtheirfaultsandHeisverilyforgivingandforbearing.

Moral

InthisGodhasdepictedcharacteristicsofthehypocritesandtrulyfaithfulwhostoodthetestintheBattleofUhod.HeforborepunishingthosewhofledawayfromthebattlefieldforthesakeoftheProphet,reservingeternalpunishment,unlesstheydiedwithpenance,whichislayingdownlifeonthenextoccasion.

156.Ohyoufaithful,donotbeliketheinfidelswhotoldyou,inthecaseoftheirbrethren,whentheywentouttoparticipateinthecrusade,iftheyhadremainedwiththembehind,theywouldhaveneither34diednorslain.Theysaid,“ForthisreasonGodhadcreatedinthemgrief(fornothavingbeenfortunateingettingbooty)”althoughGodonlygiveslifeanddeathandviewsallyourdeedswhetheryouareslaininthenameofGodordiedinHisway.

165.What,whenadversityfellonyouthelikeofwhich,duplicateinintensity,youcastonyouradversary,youstartedcomplainingastowhenceitcametoyou.SayohProphet,“Thisisduetoyourowndeeds(ofrunningafterbooty)”andverilyGodisOmnipotent.

166.Andwhenadversityfellonyou,whentwopartieswerefacingeachother,itwasunderDivinesanctiontodeterminethefaithful.41

188.LetthemnotbeledawaywithwhatWehavegiventhemandtheirloveforbeingpraisedfornoactionoftheirs.Theyshouldnotthinktheyarefreefrompunishment;ratherisintensepunishmentforthem.

Fewrecognizeinearnest,theworldisadeception.Allwhichglittersisnotgold.therichandthosevestedinpowerwhoseemtoenjoythemselvesshallbethe

worstofall,onReckoningDay,fortheirhavingmisusedHisBounties–neglectedtopray,paytitheandforHiswill,tohelpthedeservingpoorfaithful,whoreservedtheirentireliveinspreadingIslam.

Infact,onReckoningDay,resultswillbechaoticofworldlyappearances.Thoseinpowerinworldwillgodownandthosefaithfuldownintheworldwillbeontheascent.Peopleshould,therefore,noteverentertaintorisehighinpowerandwealth,assimplyinvolvingtheminresponsibilitieswhichtheyordinarilycannotdischargetoDivinesatisfaction.

1.Ohyoupeople,fearyourGodwhocreatedyoufromonepersonandfromhisremnantearthhiscomradeandfrombothoftheminfinitemenandwomen,andfearGodbyswearingbywhosenameyourequesthelpfromoneanother(foreffectingatransaction)similarlyshouldyouonyouractsentertainDivinecommandsandavoiddisaffection.1Verily,Godguardsyouractions.

2.Andgiveorphanstheirrightsanddonotinterchangethem,causingdeficiencytotheirinterestanddonotswallowtheirpropertybymixingitwithyours,verilythisisamajorsin.

3.Andifyouareafraidyouwillnotdealjustlywithorphangirls,youcanmarryothersfromtwotothreetofourandthenagain,ifyouareafraidyouwillnotmaintainjusticeamongthem,youcanrestcontentwithonetotaketofemaleslavesasyourcompanionswhichisnearertojustice.

4.Andgiveyourwivestheirshareofthedowryandtheniftheywillinglyparticipateinitwithyou,itisnotobjectionableandislegalforyou.

5.Anddonothandoverthepropertyofidiotstothemwhoareentrustedtoyourcare.Youcanspendoutofittowardstheirprovisionandclothing,talkingallthewhilepolitelywiththem.

6.Andinemployingorphanswatchandwaitiftheyarecapableofmarriageatmaturity,andthenifyoufindthemcapableoflookingaftertheirownproperty,handitovertothemanddonotswallowitorwasteit,fearingtheywilldemandaccountingofitatmaturity,andHewhoisrichshouldavoidtaxingthemforitssupervisionandincaseofpovertyyoucanchargethemforsuperintendenceandwhenyouhandoverthepropertytothemgetitattestedbytwowitnesses,althoughGodisenoughtotakeaccount.

7.Formenthereisashareinlegacyoftheirparentsandrelationsandforwomenisalsoashareinlegacyoftheirparentsandrelations,beitlittleormoreandthisisanobligation.

8.Andwhendecidingalegacy,arepresentrelations,orphansandthepoor,paythemsomethingoutofit,talkinglenientlytothem.

9.Andiftheyshouldbeafraidofleavingweakchildrenbehindthem,lesttheymayberuined,theyshouldfearGodandtalkrighteouslywithothers.

10.Verily,thosewhoswallowunjustlypropertyoforphans,theydonothingbutfillintheirstomachwithfire.Shortlytheywillbehurledintoit.

Moral

Self-sufficientwithinthebodytoshowprovidentialfearisthemothofsafety,itisimplantedinusasapreventativemeasureofEvil.

Verses11–14

11.Godcommandsyouregardingyourchildren:amalegetsdoublethefemale’sshare;then,iftherearetwodaughtersonlyormore,theygettwo-thirdsofit,whereas,ifthereisonlyonedaughter,shegetshalfandtheparentsofthedeceased,eachgetsone-sixth.Then,ifthereisnoissue,thepropertywillbedividedbetweenparents,fathergettingtwicethemother,whereas,ifthedeceasedleavesabrother,2themotherwillgetone-sixth.Allthistobedistributedafterdischargingthewillandthedebts.Parentsandchildren,youarenotawarewhoamongstthemaremoreentitledwithregardtobenefittingyou.ThisobligationisfromGodandverilyGodisknowingandwise.

12.Forthehusbandisone-halfthelegacyifyourwifedieswithoutissue,whereasifshehasanissue,thehusband’ssharewillfalltoaquarterafterfulfillingthewillanddebt.Forthewife,shewillhaveone-fourth3ofthelegacy,ifthehashusbandhasnoissue,andincaseofissuehersharewillfalltoone-eighth,afterfulfillingthewillanddebt,andifthedeceasedhasbrothersandsisters(asinheritors)eachofthemwillgetone-sixthandincaseofmanytheymustbesatisfiedwithone-thirdofthelegacyafterfulfillingthewillanddebt.Thereshouldbenointentiontomartheinterestofinheritors.ThisisGod’swillandGodisknowingandforbearing.

13.TheseareGod’slimitsandhe,whoshallobeyGodandHisProphetshallbeadmittedtoParadisebelowwhichflowstreamswhereinshalltheyremainandthisisamightyachievement.

14.ThosewhodisobeysgodandHisProphetistransgressingthelimitsshallbethrownintohellwhereinshalltheyeverremaintohaveadisgracefulpunishment.

18.Andpenanceisnotacceptedinfavourof5thosewhocontinuesinsuntildeathapproachesthem(whenitistoolateforthemtodopenance,norisit6feasibleforthemwhodieasinfidels.Forthemisintensepunishmentkeptbyusready.

19.Ohyoufaithful,itisnotfaironyourparttodepriveyourwivesofherdowry,notisitfairtoimprisonthemwithaviewtotakingbackwhatyouhavegiventhemexceptwhentheyarechargedwithfornication.Livewiththempeacefully,andthenifyouaredisgustedwiththemonaccountofsomeevil

habitinthem,verilyhasGodendowedonthemmanyother7invitingvirtues.

20.Andifyouintendtoreplaceherwithotherandifyouhavegivenherconsiderableproperty,donotdepriveherofit.What!Areyoulibelingheroropenlydisobeyingwithaviewtoseizingpropertyfromher.

21.Andhowcanyoudepriveherofitwhenactuallyhavehadanintercoursewithherandyouhavegivenasolidcovenant8beforehand.

22.Donotmarrywidowsofyourfatherexceptwhatyouhavedoneinthepastthroughignorance.Verily,thisisagreatshamelessnessonyourpartanditisanevilcustom.

23.Unlawfulforyoutomarryyourmothers,daughters,sisters,aunts,paternalandmaternal,nieces,brothers,sisters,andmotherswhohavebeetwetnursesandwetsistersandmothersin-lawsanddaughtersofthosewithwhomyouaremarriedandhadintercourse,whereasotherwisetheyarelawfulanddaughters-in-lawandtohavetwosistersasjointlyatthesametime,exceptwhatyouhavedonebeforereceivingthesecommandsfor,verily,Godisforgivingandmerciful.

Verse24-25:TemporaryMarriage

24.Andmarriedwomen,exceptwhentheycomeunderyourcontrolasslaves,havebeenillegalizedbyGod,barringthem,restarelawfultoyou.Ifyouseekthembypaymentofdowryandnotunderprostitution,andthenifyouholdtemporarymarriageswithstipulationoftimeanddowrywhichshouldbepaidtothembeforehandasanobligationandifyouarealteringundermutualconsent,thereisnoharmverily,Godisknowingandwise.9

25.Andthosewhocannotaffordtomarryfreefaithfulwomen(onpaymentofdowry)theycanmarryfaithfulslavesunderyourcontrolandGodiswellacquaintedwithyourfaith,beingofmutualspecies.Youcanmarrythefaithfulslaveswithpermissionoftheirmastersandpaymentofthedowryfromavailablesource,providedtheyarevirtuousandnotprofligateandnotadulteratingsecretly,andaftermarrying,iftheyareaccusedoffornication,theirpunishmentishalfoffreewomen.ThisarrangementisforhimwhoisafraidofseverepunishmentandifyouarepatientitismuchbetterforyouandGodisforgivingandmerciful.

HowIslamhasbeengraduallymutilatedbytheveryimposterswhoseizedthepowerimmediatelyonpassingawayoftheProphet,canbestudiedbytheirautocraticdecisions,withouthavingany“DivineAwe”onwhichallrevealedreligionsarebased,havingnointentionofDivineknowledgeandunderpassion,involvedtheirfollowerswitheternalloss.

26.GoddesirestoexposeprecedinglawsandacceptyourpenanceandGodisknowingandwise.

34.Menhavebeengivenprecedenceoverwomenbyvirtueofexcessbountyandfortheirsacrificeofpropertyontheirbehalf.Thevirtuouscontentedwiveswillguardtheirrightsintheirabsence.Thosewhoareafraidofdisobedience,shouldadvisethemfirst,thenleavethemasideontheirbeds,andfinallypunishthem.Whentheyobey,donotover-awethemandGodisMightyandOver-awingyou.

38.Andthosewhospendtheirpropertyforpublicadmiration,withoutbelievinginGodandeternity(wastetheirreward)andhewhowillbefriendswithdevilsshallgetintoevilcompany.

39.WhatharmwastothemiftheybelievedinGodandtheDayofJudgment,andspentinthenameofGodwhenHewouldhaveappreciatedtheiracts.

40.Verily,Goddoesnot,intheslightest,doinjustice,whereas,IfanydoesaslightvirtueHeenhancesitgivingextrarewardfromHimselfwithamightreward.

41.WhatshallhappenwhenWeshallraisefromamongsteverygrouptheirImam,DivineLight,asawitnesstotheiractsandraiseyouohProphetawitnesstotheImamsDivineLightsonthisday.

42.Infidelswillwish,whohaddisobeyedtheProphetontheEarthhadbeenlevelledup(withthem)thentheywillhidenothingfromGod.

Moral

Goddefinesdutiesoftherichtopreventthemfromfallingpreytothewickedmisercondemnedtohell.Onlythewealthwehavesobestoweddowekeep(forEternity),theotherislosttous;rather,weshallhavetorenderaccountifmisused.TheProphetsaid,“Everygoodactischarity,yoursmilinginyourbrother’sfaceischarity,anexhortationofyourfellowmantovirtuousdeedsisequaltoalmsgiving,yourputtingawandererintherightpathischarity,yourassistingtheblindischarity,yourremovingstonesandthornsandotherobstaclesfromtheroadischarity,yourgivingwatertothethirstyischarity.”

Aperson’struewealthhereafter,i.e.isthegoodwhichisleftbehindinthisworldtotheirfellowhumans.Whentheydie,peoplewillsay,“Whatpropertyhavetheyleftbehind?”Buttheangelswillask,“Whatgooddeedshavetheysentbeforethem?”Godwarnsagainstostentation,whichseldomgoeswithlearning,liketherisinganddecliningsunmakeslongshadows.Itisthesignalflagofhypocrisy.Prideisthemastersinofthedevil.

Verses43–50

43.Ohyoufaithfuldonotapproachprayersintoxicated(inswoonsleep)untilyouknowwhatyousay.DonotpasstheHolymosquewhileinanuntouchablecondition,untilyoubathe13andifyouareillortravellingandwhenyoucannotfindwater14orfromintercourse15(withyourwife)andyoucannotgetwater,strikeyourhandsonpureearth,passingthemoveryourface16and17handsverilyGodforbearingandforgiving.

44.Haveyounotseenthosewhohavebeenactingonpartoftext18andselltherestformisguidanceandintendtomisleadothers.

45.AndGodisacquaintedwithHisenemiesandsufficestobeyoursympathizerandtobeyourassistant.

46.OfthoseJewswhotransmutetheirtext(whereverProphetsattributesaregiven)andsay(inpresenceoftheProphet)weheardanddefyit(whenreturninghome),givingmisinterpretationbytheirtongue;otherwiseinordertotaunt(Islam)religiontheysay“hear”whatisunworthyofhearing,andhaveregardforushadtheysaid“Weheardandobeyed,”youpleaselistento

usandhaveconsiderationforus.Itwouldhavebeenbetterontheirpart,butGodhascursedthemfortheirpervertedmindandunbeliefonaccountofwhich,exceptafew,mostwouldnotembracefaith.

47.Ohyoumenofrevealedreligionbelieveinwhatyouhaverevealedconfirmingwhatiswithyou,beforeweturnyourfacebackwardsandcurseyouaswecursedprecedingthoseofyourswhodisobeyedasregardstheirtransgressionofSaturdayandthisshallbedoneaspromised.

48.Verily,GoddoesnotforgivehimwhoassociateswithHimandforgiveshimwhomHechoosesotherwise.Verily,thosewhoassociatewithHimhavelibelledandcommittedamightysin.

49.Haveyounotseenthosewhoclaimtopurifythemselves19,whereasGodpurifieswhomHelikes,andHedoesnotintheleastdoinjusticetoany.

50.JustseehowtheylibelGodandthisisenoughanopensinforcondemnation.

52.Thesearethepeoplewhoarecursed(forhavingfollowedslavesofpassion)byGodandthosewhoarecursedbyGodshallneverbeassisted.

53.Havetheygotanyshare21ofreligiousleadership?Iftheyhad,theywouldnothavepartedwithaparticleofit,beingpassionate.

57.ThosewhoembracedfaithandactedvirtuouslyshallWeshortlyadmitthemintoparadisebelowwhichflowstreamswhereintheyshalleverabideandwhereintheyshallhavepurenymphsandresideunderextensiveshades.

58.AndverilyGodcommandstohandoverthetrustof24leadershiptothoseentitlebyvirtueoftheirbeingimmaculate(andDivinelyinspiredasDivineLights)andwhenyoujudgeamongstpeople,dispenseyourjudgmentwith25justice;verilyGodadvisesyoutoyourbenefit,verilyHeisHearingandseeing.

59.Ohyoufaithful,obeyGodandobeytheProphetandreligiousleaders(DivineLights)andifthereisadifferenceamongstyou(thisexcludesGod–ProphetandImams)26youappealtoGod,theProphetandImams,ifyouhavefaithinGodandeternity,thisshallbethebestsolution.

61.WhentheyareaskedtocometowhatisrevealedbyGod(text)andtotheProphet,thehypocriteswillbeobservedtostopthemfromcomingtoyou.

75.Whatisupwithyou?Youarenotparticipatingincrusade,althoughweakmenandwomenandchildrenwhohavebeendetainedinenemycountry(Mecca)fromflyinghavebeenheldup;praytoGodtomakeanoutletforthemfromtheenemiesofthisland(Mecca)andnominateanyonefromThee,ourleaderandwhoshallbeourassistantfromYou.

76.ThosewhoarefaithfulfightintheNameofGodandthosewhoarefaithlessfightforthedevil.Youbetterfightagainstthedevil’sfollowersforhisdesigns(Devil)areunsound.

TheDevilcancitescripturesforhispurposeandevilsoulproducingholywitnessislikeavillainwithasmilingcheekagoodlyapplerottenattheheart.Ifadevileverlaughs,itmustbeathypocrites,fortheyarethegreatestdupesashehas;theyservehimbetterthananyothersbutreceivenowages,nay,whatisstillmoreextraordinary,theysubmittogreatermortificationtogotothelowesthellthansince4restfaithfultogotoHeavenofhighestgrade.

AnatheistisbutamadridiculousderiderofpietybutahypocritemakesasoberjestofGodandreligion,theyfinditeasiertobeuponhiskneesthantorisetoagoodaction,likeanimpudentdebtorwhogoeseverydaytotalkfamiliarlyto

theircreditorswithouteverpayingwhattheyowetoDivineLights,viz.submission.Theyaresaintsabroadanddevilsathome.Itistheonlyevilwhichwalksinvisible,excepttoGodalone.Onemaysmileandsmileandbeavillainstill.

Thereareonlytworeligions,IslamandPassion(devil),“Themoralvirtues,withoutreligionarebutcold,lifeless,andinsipid.Itisonlyreligionwhichopensthemindtogreatconception.Fillsitwithmostsublimeideasandwarmsthesoulwithmorethansenseatpleasureswhicharemoreworldlyandfrail,whileeternalpleasuresarepureandpermanent,thesecannotbeattainedwithoutpaymentofpriceforthemandthemaximumpricewillgetmaximumpleasureswhichis“martyrdom”andhenceparticipationincrusadewithsoleintentionofDivinewillhavingnothingofsecuringworldlygains,isenteringparadiseofthehighestgrade.

Thosewhowishtosecurethegoodofothershavealreadysecuredtheirown.Everydutybringsitspeculiardelight,everydenialitsappropriatecompensation,everythoughtitsrecompense,everycrossitscrown,paygoeswithperformance,aseffectwithcause,vicevitiateswhoeverindulgesinit,thewickedwrongtheirsouls,generositygreatens,virtueexaltscharitytransfigures,andholinessistheessenceofangelhood.Goddoesnotrequireustoliveoncredit.Hepaysuswhatweearn,goodorevil,heavenorhell,accordingtoourchoice.

Didyounoticethosewhowereadvisedontheirdemandforcrusade,afterflighttoholdup(asdidDivineLightNo.2)theirhandsanduntilcommandsoncrusadeareissued?Sayprayersandpaytitheandwhencrusadewasmadeobligatory(asinDivinelightNo.3)agroupofthemgotfrightenedwiththepeopleastheyfearGod,rathermorethanthat,andbegantosay(thosewhousedtoflyawayfromcrusade).

Verses77–87

77.“OhourProvidence,whydidstYoumakeitbondingonus?Whynotholditoveralittlewhile?”Sayinreplytothem,“Worldlypleasuresaretransientandeternalbountiesareforthepiousandyouwillnotbe(onyourrewardsforparticipatingincrusade)ill-treatedintheleast.”

78.Whereveryoube,deathshallseizeyoualthoughyoubelockedinastrongfortressandwhenfortuneattendsthemsay,“ItisfromGodandwhenmisfortuneattendsthemtheyimputeittoyou.”SayeverythingisfromGod,whatisupwiththesect?Theydonotunderstandsomuch.

81.Theysay,“Weobeyed”andwhentheygetoutfromyou,agroupamongstthemmeetinthenight,talkingotherwise,andGodrecordswhattheycabal,youturnyourfaceawayfromthem;dependuponGodWhoshallsufficeasaguardian.

82.DotheynotthinkovertheQur’an;ifitwasfromelsewhere,theywouldhavefoundmanyadiscrepancyinit.

83.Andwhenanyimportantaffairregardingsafetyoflifeordangertherein

arisestheydivulgeit,whereas,hadtheyreferredtotheProphetorthoseinitiatedinit,theywouldhavecometoknowthroughthoseknowingthem,andhaditnotbeenforthe30mercyandgraceofGod,barringfew,youwouldhavefollowedthedevil(thepassionatepeople).

84.Soyou(Prophet)fightintheNameofGodandWehavenotgiventhistroubletoanybutyou,andinvitethefaithfultowardsit;veryshortlyGodwillsaveyoufromtheinfidels,verilyGodismightyatpunishmentandrevenge.

85.Thosewhowishwillofyougetsashareofit,andthosewhowishotherwise,likewisegetsasharetherein,andGodisOmnipotent.

86.Ifanybodywishesyoupeace,youreturnhim,withagreaterpeace,andgodshallaccountfromeverybody(fortheirdeeds).

87.ThereisnonebutGod(yourLord).Heshallassembleallareckoningday,thereisnodoubtaboutit,andwhocanbetruerthanGod.

AllbountiesarefromGodandyouaregratefultoHim,ifyouusethemasperdirectionandareresponsibleifyoumisplacethemormisusethem.

88.DoyouintendtoguidethemwhomGodhasdeprivedthemofit?AndthosewhomGodforsakes,youwillnotfindanywayfor.

89.Theydesireyoutobeinfidellikethemselves,soallmaybeonthesamelevel.SodonottakethemtobeyourfriendsuntiltheyflyforthesakeofGod,andiftheyturntheirface,seizethemwhereyoucangetthemandslaythemanddonottakethemasfriendsorassistants.

90.Exceptthosewhotoanation32withwhomyouhaveapactortheycometoyouunwillingtofightagainstyouorjointheirowncommunitywhoisnotfightingagainstyou,andifGodwishes,Hewouldhavemadethemoverpoweryouwhentheywouldhavesuddenlyfoughtaginstyousoiftheyremainaloofandnotfightagainstyouandsuepeace,andGodhasnotgivenyoupowertoill-treatthem.

91.Shortly,youwillfindanationwhodesirestobesafefromyouandfromtheirowncommunityandwhentheyallgetentrappedinacalamity,theycaseintheirlotwiththem,iftheydonotkeepawayfromyouandnotsuepeaceanddesistfromfighting,youarrestthemandkillthemwhereyoufind,forWehavegivenyoufreepoweroverthem.

92.Itisnotfairforafaithfultokillafaithfulexceptthroughmistakeandevenifhedoessohehastosetfreeafaithfulslavetowardspenanceandpay

bloodpricetotheinheritor,unlessthelatterforgivesandiftheslainisfromaninimicalsectandinfidel,theslayerfaithful,hehasonlytosetfreeafaithfulslavetowardsthepenance,andifbelongstoasectwherebetweenthemismutualpact,hehastopaythebloodmoneytotheinheritorsandsetfreeafaithfulslave,failingthishehastoobservetwomonthssuccessivefastingandGodisknowingwise.

93.Forthosewhokillafaithfulintentionally,theirpunishmentishellwhereintheyshalleverabideandDivinewrathtobootandhiscurseandintensepunishmentisforthem.

94.Ohyoufaithful,33whenyougetoutonincrusadeGod’sname,ascertainwhenanybodywishesyou,beforecallinghim,heisnot34faithful,togainyourworldlymotive;forbeforeGodyouhaveagreatrewardandthuswereyouinfidelsbeforeGodobligedyouandexplicitlyinformedyou,Heknowswhatyoudo.

95.Ofthefaithfulwhositdownathomeonfalseplea,barring–disabledduetoillnessandtothelatteroverthosewhositdownonunpermittedalthoughallfaithfulhavebeenpromisedrewardbutfromthepointofviewofgradesinparadisethoseparticipatinghavehighergradesoverthosesittingdown.

96.ThesegradesarefromGodwithforgivenessandmercyandGodisforgivingandmerciful.

(a)Ifafaithfulintentionallykillsafaithful,butnotknowingitisunlawful,willnotbepermanentlyhell.

(b)IftheythinkitlawfulandkillswillbeapermanentresidentofHell.

(c)Ofiftheykillonaquestionregardingfaith,theywillbeapermanentmemberofHell.

(d)IftheyrepenttheywouldnotbeinHellpermanently,sinceonreferringtoImamal-Sadiq,afaithfulkillingafaithful,havetheypenance?Hesaid,“Iftheyhavekilledonfather,thereisnopenanceforthem.Iftheyhavedoneinanger,ortoseekworldlybenefit–theirpunishmentistheyshallbekilled,elsebetakentotheinheritorsoftheslainiftheypardontheyshouldpaybloodmoney,andredeemafaithfulslaveandobservetwomonthsoffastingandfeed60paupers,butitisamajorsin.”TheProphetsaiditisagreatersinthandestructionoftheholdworldbeforeGodandifhumanityofHeavensandEarthareinvolvedinkillinghim–Godshallhurlallinhell.

Verses97–100

97.Verilythosewhomangelsofdeathwillputtodeathfortheirhavingtyrannizedinthisworldwhileaddressingthemtowhattheyhadbeendoinginthisworldwillsayintheirdefense,“Wehadbeenrenderedhelplessinournativeplace,”thentheywillbetoldbyangels,“WasnotGod’slandwideenoughforyoutoflyto.”Thosearethepeoplewhosedestinationishellandawfulisthatabode.

98.Excepttheagedamongstthemandthewomen,andchildrenwhohadnomeanstogetoutofittosafeland.

99.ForthoseshallGodforbearandverilyisGodforbearingandforgiving.

100.AndthoswhofightforthesakeofGod(underinstructionoftheImmaculate,i.e.DivineLightsnotforworld)shallfindthelandwelcomedandwideandthosewhogooutoftheirhouseasarefugeetoGodandHisProphet(asapilgrim)anddeathovertakesthemontheway,theirrewardiswithGod,andverilyisGodforgivingandmerciful.

101.Whenyougooutontourthereisnoharmifyoureduceyourprayer,andifyouareafraidofattackofenemieswhoareinfidels,forverilytheyareyouropenenemies.

102.Andyourinmidstofthem(aswasHussaininKarbala)whileyouarereadyforprayers,apartyshouldjoinyouinprayerswitharms(witharearguard)andwhentheyhavefinishedprostrationsinfirstrakattheyshouldgetbehind,sendingtherearguardaheadfortheprayersandwhohavenotyetsaidtheprayersincompanyofImamtosayprayers,withyoukeepingthearmswiththe,fortheinfidelsareawaitingtheopportunityofyournegligencefromarmsandpropertytoattackyouallofasudden,andthereisnoharm,ifamidstheavyrainsorinillness,youletdownyourarmsonground,keepingaguardforyou,verily,bodhaskeptdisgracefulpunishmentforinfidels.

103.Andwhenyoufinishprayers,rememberGod(ineverycondition)whileyouarestanding,sitting,orturningyoursidesandwhenyouinasafeplace,sayyourprayerswithoutguard,forverilyprayers35areboundenasobligatory

intherecordonthefaithful.

104.Anddonotletslippersecutionofenemies,forifyouhopethey(yourenemies)donothope(yourhopeonlossoflifeisparadiseandinvictoryisbooty)andGodisknowingandwise.

105.Verily,haveWerevealeduntoyouthetextwithtruth,sowhenyoudecidedisputesbetweenparties,“DosoonlinesindicatedtoyoubyGodwithoutsidingwiththedishonest.”

106.“ByGodnonebuttheProphetandhisImmaculatefamilyareauthorizedbyGodtodecidethedisputesamongstHiscreation.HereprimandedAbuhanifaforhisauthorityforthis:forpropagatinghisviewsagainstDivineLights.Aliinrejectingthemsays,“Ifdifferenceofindecisionwaspermissible,hewouldhaveordainedbutitisnotso;ifdifferenceisjustifiable,Islamisdefective,butthelatterisnotso.Ifdifferencewasagreeable,Godwouldapproveofassociation,butishightestoffence...PrayforgivenancefromGod,verilyGodisforgivingandmerciful.”

107.Anddonotlitigateonbehalfofthedishonest;verilyGoddoesnotlikethedishonest.

108.TheyhidefrommenanddonotsofromGodbecauseGodiswiththemunseen(participatingintheirdiscourse).Theyenterintocabal,they(fristthreeKhalifahsandParties,withaviewtotamperingwiththetext)discussingwhatisdispleasingtoGodandhasGodgotroundthemwiththeirdeeds.

109.Thesearethepeople,onwhosebehalf,youaredisputinginthisworldlylife,whowilldoso(fightorpleadtheircase)onReckoningDayorwhowillbetheirback?

110.ThosewhodoevilorharmthemselvesandtheniftheyprayforgivenessonpenancefromGod,shallfindGodforgivingandmerciful.

111.Andthosewhocommitsin,consequencethereof,isontheirownshouldersandGodisknowingandwise.

112.Thosewhocommitafaultorasinandthenallege(libellingotherscarriesagreatresponsibilityandmightsintowardsself.

asacreature,howcanHiswillbedeclaredandattributesbeexemplified,exceptallegoricallyandthroughamediumHethereforecreated,beforecreation,LightofMohammad,fromwhomemanated13otherLights,tosoqualifiedallofwhom,Hedeclared,emanated,Lightsoftheremainingprophets,inproportionatedegrees,whoallthussobecameDivinelytaught.TheirentireknowledgeoftheTextislimitedtothese14DivineLights.Languagewhereofhas,therefore,tobemostlyallegorical,ascreationatlargebeingincompetenttoappreciateit(well-beingincomprehensibleasattimeinsleepofAlilayHisWillandslayinginfidelAmrbinAbdewadintheBattleoftheTrench).

Thishasbeenthecase,withpreviousrevelationsofprecedingprophets.NonebuttheseprophetsarethereforeentitledtocommentonrespectiveenlightenedBooks.FollowingthemislikefollowingtheDivinePath.TheymanifestDivineCommandsandRefrain,HisuniqueNatureinsinceredevotiontoHimaloneentiretyinDivineLove,beingdulyauthorizedtoleadontheDivineWay.

(3)FreeWillandPre-destination:Thisisunfathomable,beyondhumanreason.People,oncebeingconvincedofHisexistence,isboundtocarryouttheCommandsofHisWill,toexemplifywhichHeproducedmodelsof“DivineLights,”e.g.“wisdom”orDivineKnowledgeismanifestedintheProphetasamessengerfromHim,invincibilityinAliasaDivinePotence,forbearanceinHassanasDivineClemency,patienceinHussain,modestyinFatima,subjecttowithdrawalatDivineWill,sotoinfuseandmaintainDivineAweallactingasperDivineWill.

TomanifestDivineattributesinAdministrationandglorywhenneededtoobtainhumangoalstoDivineproximity,byemulatingthem,prayingforgivenessonReckoningDay,forthosewhofollowedtheirway,aspertheirdictation,andcursingthosewhoprovedotherwisebeingslavestotheirpassionsbyfollowingthedevil,bydisregardingtheiradvice,andthusfacingDivineWill,settingatnaught,HisJustice,Omnipotence,Self-will,Wisdom,andtruth,andtakingadvantageofHisClemency,fortheirworldlyactionswithouthavinganideaofhavingtoaccountinthefutureandfinalcondemnationontheDayofReckoning

asagainstthoseadmittedtoDivineProximity,byhavingfollowedtheDivineLights,therepositorsofDivineWill.

(4)Humanobligations,laiddownbyGod,areinnaturecreativeandoperativeinactionformerfallunderdivineknowledge,andthelatterissueunderhumanagency,neitherentirelyfree,nordeterminedcompletelybydivinity,butinbetween.Hiswillhasbeenvariouslyexposedas(1)anobligatory,(2)desirable,(3)illegal(4)undesirableand(5)optionalfunctions.Allobligationsareconditionalon(1)nohindrancetodischargethem,(2)health,(3)capabilityoforgans(4)andmeansavailableforthesame,beforejusticeisdispensed,onrewardorpunishmentmetedoutbyDivinity.

(5)“Kursi”isDivineKnowledge”restrictedtoGod.

(6)“Arsh”isDivineKnowledgegrantedto“14Lights”

(7)“Death”istidingstothefaithful,andthreateningtoinfidelsanddoubtfultothesinfulShias,aworldbeingaprisontothefaithful,andparadisetotheinfidels.(Somefaithfuldiesmiling,whichmeansrewardshavestartedtherefrom,othersundersuffering,whichmeansterminatingpunishmenttherewith,whereafterfollowscomfortandviceversaforinfidels,allbasedonjustice)Thestateofafaithfulafterdeathisasthoughtheyreturnedhomeafteralongjourneyandthatofaninfidel,arunawayslavebroughtbeforetheirmaster.

(10)Cistern(Houz-e-Kowser):ItisafactgrantedtotheProphetonwhichAlishallfeedhisfriendswithwater,wheretheyshallnevergetthirstythelatterdrivingouthisenemies.

(11)Intercession(Shafaat):ThisisafactinIslam.ThosewhosetenetsandcultareapprovedbyGodshallbeentitledthereto.

(12)RewardandPunishmentarefactsasperDivinepromiseandjustice,butself-willshallrelaxpunishment.

(13)RecordsofDeeds:Theyarefactsandwastefultalkandactionbeingprejudicialtoone’sinterest,tobeavoided.

(14)Reefs(aaraf)areelevatedbanksbetweenhellandheavenuponwhichshallstandDivineLightsadmittingthosetoparadiseknowntothemandintercedeonbehalfofthosestandingbythem.

(15)Bridge(Sirat)isacrossingforallandrepresentsintheworldinthepersonofDivineLightsknowledgeofwhomandcompliancewiththeirCommandsshallleadtosalvation.

(16)DetentionoftheQuarantine(Wukuf):Theseare50innumberof1000yearsdurationwherethesinnersshallbedetainedfortheirfailings,asperprovedchargesagainstthem.

(17)QuestioningandAccounting:GodshallquestionProphetsandlatertheirsuccessorsandthesuccessorsshalldemandaccountsfromtheirfollowers.ThismeansGodmeasuresactsofHIScreatures,inascalepanofDivineLights.Ofcourse,thosewhohavenosinsortheirsinsremittedduetopenanceareexcepted;sinsofculpritsshallbeestablishedagainstthemfortheirdenialthroughwitnessesoftheirownorgans.

(18)ParadiseandHell:Thesearefacts,aspermanentabodesofblissandpainfortheirresidentsandsinfuluniqueworshippers,underintercession,shallmergefromhellafterundergoingpunishment.DivineSelectiontohurltoHellisMohammadandAli(24thcoupletofSurahQaf).

(19)AssociatorsofDivineLights:Thosewhoattribute,suspendingdivinityinadministrationoftheworldtothem,likeasectinJews,Christians,andMagiansareworsttosufferonReckoningDayasitdeniesHisattributeofIndispensabilitytocreation.

(20)Traditions:Theseareoffourspecies(1)relatedbyhypocritestogainworldlyinterestareallegationsagainsttheProphet,(2)thosewhoheardfromtheProphetbutdidnoteschewproperly,(3)thosewhoheardbutdidnothearthesubsequentsupersedingtradition,(4)thoserelating“defacto”areofDivineLights.1
