The Build Up

“You can’t photograph a memory” – Henri Cartier-Bresson

Working from the idea of photographs as a factual record of the physical pres-ence, I have made it my main aim to capture emotion. Because of this, the physi-cal construction of each photograph has been simplified. I have used stillness contrasted with blurring of the figures, and simple composition in the images to explore the use of movement as a means of expression.

The memory of emotion is sometimes much stronger than the actual events that took place, so I was interested in replaying the emotions of loss, grief, frustra-tion, and loneliness in front of the camera.

The second series of the Fiction assignment almost continues on from the first series with the same subject and ideas, yet with a different emotion. Where the first series uses the window as a way to communicate a longing for something external, the mirror in the second set represents a struggle that is experienced internally.

The internal struggles that people experience can isolate them and be frustrat-ing to communicate to others. I was trying to convey this with sense of isolation by blurring the face and using odd reflections that don’t quite match the ‘real’ figure (from the angle of the camera).
