The Gladstone Vineyard is a small but growing winery in the Wairarapa just north of Martinborough. We currently produce 3,500 – 4,000 cases of wine, increasing to at least 8,000 cases in the next three years. Our focus is to make wine, which is sought after, both in New Zealand and overseas. Close attention to detail in the vineyard and the winery by all our staff results in wine for the premium end of the market. Our principal varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Pinot Noir. We also make a Merlot Cabernet blend.Gladstone Vineyard is managed and operated by its owners, Christine and David Kernohan who took over the vineyard in February 1996. Both were born in Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to New Zealand over 25 years ago. They are wholly committed owner operators and have gathered around them a small and loyal team of people. Christine makes the wine and manages the business. David, who is the company chairman, also runs his own business, Architecture Diagnostics, from the vineyard, and spends his weekends serving wine.

This is a harmonious wine with musky and spicy fruity aromas. The palate is smooth and creamy with flavours of bread, peach and pear, with hints of lime backed by yeast and yoghurt characteristics. Careful handling at harvest by whole bunch pressing and cool fermentation gave excellent flavours. The wine was aged for five month in tanks on the lees and was pumped over regularly to give leesy complexities.

This is a rich and sophisticated wine, with balanced flavours, rich yet easy to drink and enjoy. Intense and complex it is spicy and peppery on the nose, with flavours of cherry and stewed plums. Careful use of good French oak has resulted in an enjoyable smooth wine, which will age and develop well over the next 3-4 years.

The “Auld Alliance” is the premier Bordeaux style wine from Gladstone Vineyard, made by a Scottish woman winemaker with French Grapes varieties. The Auld Alliance, Scotland’s most famous connection with Europe was the Auld Alliance with France. First agreed in 1295/96 it was built on Scotland and France’s shared need to curtail English expansion. Not simply a military alliance, it was based on a long-established friendship founded on the Scots’ love of French wines.

This dark plummy wine has great colour, and smoky oak characteristics on the nose. It has full flavours of ripe berry, plum and cassis, with hints of liquorice give a rich and complex taste sensation. The moderate tannins and alcohol in the wine will give it good ageing potential. This is a good mouth filling wine which will partner food well.
