March was National Nutritional Month and in the spirit of Family Fitness, the GWPTA Nutrition and Wellness Committee is challenging our school community the week of May 14 to 20 to the second annual, “Strive for Five”. Making sure each family member eats five combined servings or more per day of vegetables and fruits, the recommended daily amount for most children and adults.

The “Strive for Five” challenge will bring a little “healthy competition” to GW. Keep an eye out for the “Strive for Five” tracking sheets and bookmarks with suggestions on adding more fruits and vegetables that will be coming home in backpacks by May 8th. Students will track their fruit and vegetables over the course of the week and parents will sign off on the tracking logs, which will be turned in to classroom teachers at the end of the week. The class in each grade with the greatest participation rate will win a party

complete with fresh fruit smoothies and other gifts.

Why “Strive for Five?” According to the American Dietetic Association, close to 80% of children do not eat the recommended amounts of fruit and vegetables each day, leaving them short of many important vitamins and minerals needed for growth, development, and health. We can all benefit from increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables that we consume. Our eyes benefit from the vitamin A in carrots, squash, melons, and sweet potatoes. Our blood, heart, and muscles need the vitamin K, folic acid and calcium in green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and broccoli. The vitamin C in fruits like citrus and berries helps our immunity and healing. We need the fiber in our fruits and vegetables to keep us regular, and the natural sugars in fruits as a healthy source of energy.

Want to help your child's class win the prize? Start by helping your child to get their five combined servings of fruits and vegetables per day. A serving is one cup of cooked or raw vegetables or ½ cup of

sliced fruit, two cups of raw leafy greens, one whole medium sized fruit (apple, orange, pear, banana, etc.) or one cup of 100% fruit/vegetable juice. Look for ways to add fruits and vegetables at all meal and snack times – slice a banana into breakfast cereal, serve a 100% juice with lunch, choose baby carrots instead of chips for a snack, and add a salad for dinner alongside your broccoli and you have had your five servings. And don't forget that “Strive for Five” can be a challenge for the entire family to make some better choices. Who knows – your family’s participation may win you the ultimate prize of better health.

Volunteers (and their blenders!) are needed to help with the parties (date to be determined) for the winning classes. Please contact Lisa Bonelli ([email protected]) or Gina Norfleet ([email protected]) to volunteer or with any questions.
