The GenX Exposure Study
Transcript of The GenX Exposure Study
The GenX Exposure Study is ongoing. Next steps are to...
However, PFAS are still in the blood of residents along the Cape Fear River.

GenX was NOT found in bloodsamples from Wilmington residents
In 2017, researchers at NC State began the GenX Exposure Study. They collected water and bloodsamples from Wilmington and Fayetteville residents and tested the samples for PFAS, including GenX.
The researchers found 3 new PFAS and higher levels of known PFAS(including PFOA and PFOS) in the blood of most Wilmington residents.
A chemical plant near Fayetteville, NC had been releasing GenX and other PFASchemicals into the Cape Fear River upstream of Wilmington, NC since 1980.
In 2018, GenX levels decreased in water and GenX was NOT found in the water of most homes. Mostlikely because NC started to control the chemical plant’s release of PFAS into the Cape Fear River.
