This class will make use of technology, including virtual reality, to see our history up close! During the second Shabbat of February we will read one of my favorite Torah portions. It is among my favorites not only because it was my Bar Mitzvah portion, but because the lesson I learned in preparation for my speech has remained a central tenant of my Jewish life. The portion, called Terumah, contains a verse so important that you can find it on the walls of most synagogues (including ours). The verse reads: V’asu li mikdash v’shachanti b’tocham.” They shall build me a sanctuary and I will dwell among them. God commands the Jews to bring gifts. The gifts they are commanded to bring range from highly precious metals to extremely common household items. Everyone was commanded to bring an offering based on what they had. No one had to stretch beyond their means or find an object that was elusive in any way. The point of the portion is to teach us that in order to have a sacred community, everyone must bring something to the table. Like the Mishkan (sanctuary) in Terumah, everyone has something to offer to the community. We all have different skills, talents, and abilities. One person might contribute by singing in the choir, another might volunteer on a committee. The important thing to remember no matter where we fit in to our community, every single person is as valuable as the next. Without every one of us, it would not be the same sacred community. One of the great draws to Congregation Gates of Prayer that has proven to be true is that every member of our congregation understands what it takes to create a congregation where God dwells. I am so thankful for everyone who brings their gifts to Gates of Prayer for the sake of our community and the Jewish people. \ Kul Tov, Rabbi David Gerber

of technology, including virtual reality, to see our history up close!

The verse reads:

V’asu li mikdash v’shachanti b’tocham.” They shall build me a sanctuary and I will dwell among them.
