The GatePost - The Monthly Newsletter of Aldersgate UMC December 1, 2014 # 549
In the church calendar, Advent begins Sunday, Nov. 30. Advent is the season of preparation and waiting as we anticipate the birth of the Christ child. It is also the beginning of the church year. Advent lasts for 4 weeks, culminating with Christmas. Then our Christmas season begins (the 12 days of Christmas are really the 12 days between Christmas and Epiphany which is Jan. 6). This is why, on the Sundays leading up to Christmas, we will sing Advent hymns and begin to sing Christmas hymns the closer we get to Christmas.
Advent is also the season of giving. Pastor Robb and I would like to challenge the congregation to really think about and pray about
how, why, and where we give to during this wondrous season. We all spend money giving gifts to our loved ones and to ourselves. But what can we give to others? How can we make a difference in the lives of those who really need a Christmas miracle, who really need to know the love of Christ, who really need to be healed by God’s tender touch? The United Methodist Church has an advertising campaign called ReThink. This season, they are encouraging all of us to rethink the meaning of Christmas. Instead of getting overwhelmed by shopping, eating, attending parties, and rushing children from event to event, what would happen if we slowed down and paused to remember what Christmas is about? What if we took the time to give thanks for the birth of the Christ child, and in his honor give a gift to someone we don’t know?
On pages 10 and 11 of this edition of the Gatepost you will find a list of organizations which our church supports. There are organizations which are local, national, and international. I want to encourage you to look at the list and see what interests you. And maybe, as you begin to shop for loved ones, you can also shop for a stranger by donating to one of these great organizations. There will also be a handout with this information and more, which will be available the first Sunday of Advent. In the handout there will be a way for you to share with the church how much you gave. This way we can celebrate what we, the body of Christ, have given so that others may have a very blessed Christmas.
I want to wish you a very meaningful Advent season and a very Merry Christmas. May our hearts be opened to the One who comes in the form a child and asks us to care for Him. May our lives be transformed by Emmanuel, God with us. And may our spirits be stirred in such a way that we share we what we have, and share the good news of God love, with others!
In the name of the Christ child,
Pastor Karin

Please remember that ALL GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS using the Aldersgate facility must contact the church office and schedule their meetings, rehearsals and events on the Master Calendar. Using the Master Calendar avoids confusion and
conflicts and also insures that your meeting or event is set up properly with the necessary equipment.
Our facility is in constant use both internally and by outside groups. What you see on the Sunday bulletin calendar is only a small portion of the events and activities that are occurring during the week.
In addition, it is VITAL to remember to close and lock all doors and windows when you adjourn. Thank you for your help in keeping our property secure!
If you are in need of prayer for yourself, a family member or a friend, you are invited to contact:
Karen Pinney Prayer Chain Coordinator,
at (714) 5425936. All prayer requests are placed in the church prayer book and the staff and pastors pray for these people weekly. To respect the privacy of those in need, we publish only the names of those who give us permission to do so. Let us support you in prayer! If you are interested in becoming a member of the prayer chain, please contact the church office.

If you are interested in being part of this important and meaningful ministry, please feel free to attend a meeting—even if you have no experience, there are knitters and crocheters willing to help those that are just getting started. Please feel free to contact Phyllis Gavitt if you have any questions or need further information about the group.
BeFriender Ministers The BeFriender ministry of Aldersgate is a listening presence. This ministry is not a ministry of "doing", but of "being,"‐‐being present and listening quietly. Everyone is, at times, on a difficult journey and needs a caring companion who will listen, empathize, and be a reminder of a caring, faith community. All requests and meetings are confidential. This ministry comes under the umbrella of the Care and Nurture team. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be, do not hesitate to contact Rev. Robb or Elsie Hale. You can also fill out one of the cards in the pews and put it in the offering plate or make a notation in the red attendance book.
The next 13week session of GriefShare starts on January 4 and meets every Sunday at 2:30 PM in the Church Library. Call Elsie Hale at (714) 838‐4111 or Mary Lynn Norby at (714) 832‐4678 if you have questions. Spread the word to anyone you know who would find this program beneficial.

Adopt a Social Worker Program Ways to Be Involved
AUMC has been a supporter of the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center for many years. We invite you to participate in two projects this Christmas and winter.
1. Christmas Adopt a Family Program
The entire program is explained online. Family stories can be viewed and chosen by visiting: www.familieshelpingfamiliesoc.org.
A reminder that it can be fun for families to go together and support a medium to large size request. Our church staff has done this for several years in lieu of exchanging gifts in the office. Kudos to our staff! Elizabeth Circle does the same. There are also opportunities to deliver the gifts, although you will not be delivering the gifts you personally purchased. Delivery is assigned based on what area of Orange County you prefer: south OC, Santa Ana, and so on. Again, more information on delivering is available online.
2. January Sock and Blanket Drive
A warm blanket can mean all the difference to a family in need. We will be collecting new or clean, gently used twin size or toddler size blankets. And, keeping our feet warm and dry during the upcoming winter months is something we tend to take for granted. We will also be collecting socks of all sizes. These need to be new, however.
The Big Blue Tub will be on the patio during the whole month of January. Let's try to fill it up! Much thanks for helping our neighbors in Orange County.
Nancy Joslyn, Pat Downie, and Sue Bishop (part of the Mission/Outreach team)
Christmas Card Shutter Would you like to send everyone at Aldersgate a Christmas card? You can and donate to the Good Samaritan Fund, which provides bus passes and food cards to local people seeking short‐term assistance.
It’s easy to do. Just bring your Christmas card to church and hang it from on the shutter in the narthex for everyone to enjoy in lieu of sending cards individually. This allows you to wish all who come through our doors a “Merry Christmas” without having to buy, address and stamp individual cards. If you provide a donation (perhaps your reduced costs for cards and postage), please write “Christmas Card Shutter” on the memo section of your check before dropping it into the offering plate.
Toy Donations Friendly Center provides child care for their English as a Second Language classes for children under 3 years. Do you have gently used
toys to donate that would be age appropriate for children under age 3? We have plenty of books, just in need of hands‐on toys to keep the little ones busy while their moms are learning English. Donations can be brought to Friendly Center’s main site at 147 W. Rose Avenue or coordinate with Maryann Hambly, 714‐414‐6548.

Youth News! by Scott Wilmoth, Youth Co‐Director
Hello Everyone,
Our youth and parents are AMAZING!! We have done a lot together over the last month, and we have a lot planned for the near and distant future. At the end of October we had our annual Halloween sleepover. Many youth came in costume and we walked to get yogurt, and then we went bowling. We came back and had snacks, played games, and watched movies. A wonderful time was had by all!!
We started November with another incredible game of broom ball in the fellowship hall. Then we took a trip back in time with our picture night. It's so great to look back at all the pictures and remember the good times we've had and the good times to come. We then cut out some of those pictures to make collages for our youth rooms. Good times. The following Sunday we had our third annual family Thanksgiving Feast. We had over 50 youth and their families together to enjoy good times and good food. We are so thankful for the youth, their families, and our extended church family. Such a blessing!! We then set up the church for the Christmas season, and we celebrated the beginning of advent with our Advent Festival.
Our Bible studies have been going well, too. The senior high youth finished a series called "Big Words in the Bible", and our junior high youth finished a series on the Beatitudes. We are looking forward to beginning our new Bible study series at the beginning of the year, and our new Bibles are working out well.
It's not too early to plan for next summer. We will sending two teams (one junior high and one senior high) on SSP the week of July 5th‐11th. The junior high team is going to Stockton, and the senior high team is going to Walker River. Elementary camp is July 12th‐18th, Junior High Camp is July 19th‐25th, and Senior High Camp is July 26th‐August 1st. If you are interested in being on a camp staff, applications are available at www.calpaccamps.org.
The dancers are dancing for advent, the youth choir sounds great, and our youth group in just incredible! Amen to that!
Blessings,
Scott Wilmoth, Co‐Youth Director

On Saturday, December 13 at 10am, we will be taking the stockings over to HOPE, an organization that Cheryl Hartley is very involved in. At Helping Others to Prepare for Eternity, they help in the lives of abandoned or abused women and children. This wonderful place serves as a family support center serving all of Orange County’s disadvantaged homes. They provide support services with a focus on domestic violence prevention and providing basic needs with the focus on healthy life skills for families. upon the popular Indiana Jones movie series and the video game world. Cheer them on through challenge after challenge as they follow the shooting star that guides their way on a suspense‐filled journey, leading them to their greatest discovery...the real Treasure of Christmas is Jesus!

Aldergate Theatre Arts Auditions Announcing Auditions for ATA’s Spring Musical
The full length musical with a host of new songs by Stephen Schwartz, composer of Wicked.
Auditions:
December 27th‐2:30‐5pm OR December 28th‐ 2:30pm‐5pm
Callbacks by invitation only‐December 29th‐5:30pm‐9pm
In Disney's “My Son Pinocchio”, the classic tale of toymaker Geppetto’s little wooden puppet is given new life. This new musical, which retells the memorable Disney story from Geppetto’s perspective, features the beloved and timeless songs “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings,” alongside a host of new songs by Oscar‐ and Grammy Award‐winner and master melodist Stephen Schwartz. The production tackles the timely issues about what it means to be “the perfect child” – and what it means to be “a real father.”
Join the Blue Fairy, Stromboli, and a lively cast of characters as Geppetto journeys beyond the toy shop to discover the meaning of family. When the Blue Fairy grants Geppetto's wish to bring his beloved puppet to life, the new father quickly learns that being a parent is full of challenges. He struggles to make his son "the perfect boy" just to lose him to a gang of Roustabouts. It is only when faced the thought of never seeing Pinocchio again that Geppetto truly learns the joys of being a father and loving his child unconditionally.
