What the Gateacre Society does:Founded in 1974, we are the local amenity society for GateacreVillage and the surrounding area. Registered with the Civic Trust, weare part of a national movement of voluntary societies concerned withthe care of the environment. Among the things we do are to:

♦ examine the REGISTER OF PLANNING APPLICATIONS regularly,and make comments when we feel it to be necessary

♦ respond immediately Gateacre’s ENVIRONMENT is threatened

♦ research and publicise LOCAL HISTORY

♦ issue NEWSLETTERS to members to keep them informed

♦ maintain a WEBSITE to publicise our activities and to keep intouch with former Gateacre residents

♦ hold MEETINGS, OUTINGS and ILLUSTRATED TALKS

We are a Charity, and strictly non-party political. Recognised byLiverpool City Council for consultation purposes, we have goodrelations with several Departments and with our local Councillors. Weare also in contact with many other people and organisations who canbe of assistance to us.

Here are some of our achievements:♦ Conservation Area signs (first in Liverpool)

♦ 3-ton weight limit on Belle Vale Road (first in Liverpool for amenity reasons)

♦ Bollards on the pavement for the protection of historic buildings

♦ Saving Gateacre Grange grounds from development

♦ Planting of trees round the Conservative Club and on the village green

♦ Restoration of Queen Victoria’s bust after attack by vandals

♦ Pelican crossing on Woolton Road

♦ Preservation of local rights of way in Grange Weint, Sandfield Road etc.

♦ Restoration of 1897 ornamental signpost in Belle Vale Road

♦ Erection of specially-designed ‘Gateacre’ signs on all the main approaches

♦ Restoration of York Cottages, and landscaping of the vacant area in front

♦ Extension of the Conservation Area to include Grange Lodge

♦ Repair of pavement and potholes in Gateacre Brow and Rose Brow

♦ Preservation of woodland area in Oakfield Avenue

♦ Installation of litter bins in Grange Lane and Rose Brow

♦ Replacement of weather-vane on Cleggs’ building

♦ Removal of unsightly plastic banners from local public-houses

♦ Repair and repainting of the old railway bridge in Belle Vale Road

♦ Regular participation in the Civic Trust’s Heritage Open Days scheme

♦ Improved pedestrian access to the new Morrisons supermarket in Besford Road

♦ Organising clean-ups of Queen Victoria’s bust and the village green

♦ Improving the alignment of the new flats in Belle Vale Road

♦ Rescuing the 1652 lintel in the Gateacre Hall Hotel - twice!

♦ Improved bus passenger facilities at Belle Vale and Rose Brow

♦ Preventing the installation of mobile phone antennae on Cleggs’ chimney

♦ Removal of long-term ‘temporary’ classrooms from Grange Lane greenspace

♦ Encouraging Gateacre’s participation in the ‘North West in Bloom’ contest

♦ Installation of a Heritage Lectern on the village green

♦ Compilation of the book ‘Gateacre & Belle Vale: in Old Photographs’
