I feel very privileged to welcome you to another season of thrilling productions, workshops and classes here at The Garage this spring. In my inaugural season as Executive Director I am very proud to be able to increase our support for local artists through our facilities, expertise and via access to workshops, training and opportunities to showcase their work. because of this we are able to off er a mixed season of performances, from local company Chalk Circle Theatre presenting Hamlet is Dead. No Gravity from 5-9 April (pg 8) to acclaimed company Paines Plough who will once again be kicking-off a national tour right here in Norwich, with A Little Bit of Luck on 13 April (pg 9). If you’ve not yet ventured into our theatre to see a show, a series of reviews of past season performances can be found on thegarage.org.uk. Come here and discover some amazing small scale work in the new year!

The class programme continues to go from strength to strength with successes like our adult dual-discipline ballet and contemporary company Connect performing in the celebration of Dance and Film at The Cut, Halesworth.

Alongside our regular classes, we have launched a range of exciting new music courses for this season from Masterclasses to Songwriting (pg 12 & 16) all delivered by our stunning team of artists.

As I take the helm here, I am discovering the real extent of the inspiring work the organisation does, from running many afterschool clubs across the county to working with Youth Music and partner organisations across the East to increase music-making opportunities in the region for young people from all backgrounds.

I would like to thank all those that donated last season, it really does make a diff erence to a charity the size of ours, so a heartfelt thanks go out to you. If you haven’t done so yet and wish to, you can fi nd information in the brochure about regular giving or single donations (pg 22).

It makes me very proud to be leading such a wide-reaching and innovative organisation. So beat those winter blues by watching a great piece of theatre or taking part in a class. Enjoy!

Adam Taylor, Executive Director

OLIver tWIstA timeless adventure and a mesmerizing story of childhood.

Everyone has heard of the small boy who dares to ask for more, but do you know the original story of Oliver Twist? packed full of surprises for a modern audience, Red Earth’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ masterpiece recreates a colourful cast of larger than life characters on stage.

presented in the style of Victorian music hall, with speciality acts and variety entertainments, Red Earth’s production brings Oliver’s story vividly to life for children and grown-ups. Seized by Fagin, saved by brownlow, snatched back by Fagin and once again retrieved, this boy’s tale of suspense and dark deeds is told with high spirits and great good humour.

Harold Pinter’s Betrayal begins after the end of the aff air, and pursues an intricate, gripping journey back to its very beginning. In a brilliant device, time is turned upside down as the play charts signifi cant events in reverse. A ruthless exploration of the complexity of the human heart, Betrayal is Pinter’s most accessible work, enthralling and provocatively layered.

Foolhardy Actors have a fi rst class reputation for delivering the very best of classic british theatre. previous productions include One Flew Over the cuckoo’s Nest, Brief Encounter, Proof, waiting for Godot and Shakespeare’s The winter’s Tale.

The Devil Speaks True is a chilling visceral experience where you are cast as Banquo from Macbeth in a fi rst person auditory adventure, tracing Banquo’s journey from bloody battlefi eld to spectral banquet table.

Sitting in a pitch-black space and wearing wireless headphones, you will be surrounded by a world created through binaural sound, video projection and a solo performer.

The Devil Speaks True is a totally immersive experience off ering an intimate perspective of a man struggling to come to terms with his place in a violent and tyrannical world. Focussing on the psychological eff ects on men returning home from war and the bond between soldiers, the production intersperses Shakespeare’s text with interviews with ex-servicemen.

TUESDAY 5 - SATURDAY 9 APRIL 7.30pM

Secrets, betrayals, revenge and murder.

Mani and Dani, brother and sister come home for their grandmother’s birthday. but something is rotten in the state of aff airs. The ghost of their recently murdered friend haunts the family. At Hannes’ funeral Mani and Dani bump into bine and oli, a married couple who were once close to the siblings. Time is out of joint in this brutal family farce in which the ultimate question is how to act.

Written by acclaimed Austrian playwright Ewald Palmetshofer and beautifully translated by Neil Blackadder, the play explores the human being in its half-pathetic, half-touching, somehow ironic yearning for meaning and greatness.

With support from Jarrolds Trust. In partnership with The Garage.

As the great storm approaches voices from both past and future start to echo through the house by the sea. Set in the fi ctional coastal village of boxham in the months leading up to the catastrophic floods of january 1953, the play explores the complex and turbulent relationships of the Spence family who struggle to make sense of their tragic history in the face of unreliable and conflicting memories.

Following the success of The canada Boys and Parachute, fEast Theatre brings winter ’53 to The Garage, the third play in Rob John’s Norfolk trilogy.

In winter ‘53 a cast of professional actors will be joined by a chorus recruited from the communities where the play will be performed. The play’s choral sections include the voices and verbatim memories of ‘53 survivors and form a central narrative role in the production.
