2013 MIDWEST REGIONAL CONFERENCE
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN – ANN ARBOR, MI
NOVEMBER 22nd-24th, 2013
SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES (IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER)
ROBIN BOYLE – Chair, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, Wayne State University
Although born in Glasgow, Scotland, Robin’s roots in Detroit run deep, having taught at Wayne State
University since 1992. Before his chairmanship of USP, he was Associate Dean in the College of Urban,
Labor, and Metropolitan Affairs for ten years. Robin’s research interests include urban economic
development, schools and community planning, and comparative urban policy. His many positions
include being a member of the Michigan Suburbs Alliance Board of Directors, Midwestern representative
for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning, and chair of the planning board of the City of
Birmingham. He is widely acknowledged as an expert on the urban policy of the Detroit region, and is
often turned to for his knowledgeable commentary.
TAYLOR JO ISENBERG – National Director, Roosevelt Institute Campus Network
As National Director, Taylor Jo’s role is to develop and strengthen Roosevelt’s framework to best serve the
students in the network and the change they’re creating in their communities through policy. Prior to joining RICN, she witnessed the extraordinary potential of Roosevelt’s think impact model at UNC Chapel
Hill, where she helped facilitate relationships between Roosevelt students and local non-profits as the
Vice President of Policy Implementation. As Southern Regional Coordinator, Taylor created an identity
around the ‘Dirty South,’ guiding southern chapters as they provided solutions to the many challenges
facing the region.
YOUSEF RABHI – Chair of the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners (D)
Yousef represents the 8th District of Washtenaw County as County Commissioner, and has served as Chair
of the Board of Commissioners since 2011. Although he was born in Ypsilanti, he grew up in Ann Arbor,
where he became involved in environmental and social activism at a young age. He attended the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, earning a B.S. in Environmental Science. During his run forcommissioner, he successfully campaigned on a series of progressive campaign planks, including
environmental responsibility and social justice.
HAYLEY ROBERTS – Communications Director, Michigan Suburbs Alliance
Originally from Ann Arbor, Hayley helps the staff of the Suburbs Alliance tell the stories of its work, its cities
and its region. She holds a B.A. in Professional Writing and an M.A. in Digital Rhetoric and Professional
Writing, both from Michigan State University. The Michigan Suburbs Alliance is a nonprofit organization
founded in 2002 to address the shared challenges of metro Detroit’s inner ring suburbs, growing to
engage more than 31 communities, which represent over a million residents. Its vision is to pursue a future
where communities share in each other’s’ economic, environmental, and social success.
DAYNE WALLING – Mayor of Flint, Michigan (D)
Born and raised in Flint, Dayne’s alma maters include MSU, U of Oxford, U of London, and U of Minnesota
While working in Washington D.C., he co-founded the Flint Club, a non-profit community organization
dedicated to helping residents and transplants give back to Flint. After working as a policy advocate for
the Urban Coalition of Minnesota, Dayne decided to come back to Flint to run as mayor. His first bid in
2007 was unsuccessful, but luck came his way in 2009. He was reelected in November 2011 by a twelve-
point margin, but days afterward, his authority was stripped by the appointment of an Emergency
Financial Manager for Flint by Republican Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.
