Slum and micro-enterprisemodel – INDIA

• Slum population rose from 27.9 million in 1981 to over 40 million in 2001

• The National Survey in 2002 identified 51,688 slums in urban areas, of which 50.6% of urban slums were declared as "notified slums.“

• Half of non notified slums do not have any toilets

• Only 44% of the notified slums have drainage facilities

• Only 17% of notified slums have toilets

• 2 Million children die every year due to sanitation related diseases in slums

• "Sanitation is closely linked to female literacy in India," says a United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) study.

• Municipal schools do not have adequate or any toilets for girls. As a result, the dropout rate of girl students after Std V is 50 per cent.

• Lack of adequate sanitary facilities is a major cause for girls dropping out of schools particularly after puberty.

• Toilets at school act as a conduit to engage the stakeholder

• These toilets have been provided free of charge to the school children

• A caretaker has been appointed to maintain cleanliness and hygiene as per our standards

• Toilets are open for use by the slum dwellers in the morning before school starts and in the evening after school hours on a pay and use basis

• The facility is intended to be a profit center and an entrepreneurial model

• Usage is tracked with the help of a monthly pass, with an embedded QR code, issued per household (5persons per household)

Who is a “Sanipreneur”?• An entrepreneur in the area of sanitation

• Can be a young unemployed youth or even a person who is ready to take it up as career

• Responsible for operating the pay and use sanitation facility at the slum

• Will run a micro market to sell

• Personal hygiene products

• Prophylactics

• Mobile recharges

• Develop the area

• To form a meeting place

• Where ideas and information exchange takes place

Technology support for tracking the use of facility

Sanipreneuer’s are trained by 3S to use the android device along with the methodology for cleaning and support for

waste disposal is also provided by 3S

“Sanipreneur” is trained on the use of this device.

Step 1: Train

Interested users meet the “Sanipreneur” and register for the use of toilet facility

Step 2: Sign up

“Sanipreneur” assigns a unique code to the member. Step 3: Assign a Code

*Plans to test biometric (finger print) based system to alleviate need for codes

Next time the member comes to use the toilet facility, “Sanipreneur” checks her in by scanning the QR

Code

Step 4: Check-In

At the end of the day, operator can upload all the data records for a certain toilet location with “single click”.
